From here

A Barclaycard advert featuring the stars of Channel 4 show Green Wing has been attacked by an animal rights group.

Animal Defenders International (ADI), which has long campaigned against the use of animals in advertising, claimed the ad, which features a bucking bronco rodeo, was cruel.

bingle - January 19, 2007 06:07 PM (GMT)
I really don't think a company like Barclaycard would have gone ahead with that advert without first considering and consulting on the issue of animal rights.

But somebody always has to complain, don't they...

guyoline - January 19, 2007 06:09 PM (GMT)
tht's what the english are best at - complaining!

madelinenancy - January 19, 2007 06:13 PM (GMT)
i expect they're just looking for publicitiy for the cause.

but still, that didn't mean they had to attack our stephen and julian!! what if stephen was right and julian IS frail?? WHAT WILL HAPPEN WHEN HE HEARS THIS??

A Barclaycard advert featuring the stars of Channel 4 show Green Wing has been attacked by an animal rights group.

Animal Defenders International (ADI), which has long campaigned against the use of animals in advertising, claimed the ad, which features a bucking bronco rodeo, was cruel.

In the television spot, Green Wing duo Stephen Mangan and Julian Rhind-Tutt drive to a rodeo, set in Brazil.

As Rhind-Tutt explains the benefits of Barclaycard's flexible interest rate to a blonde onlooker, Mangan attempts to ride a bucking bronco and is thrown to the ground.

ADI lambasted the ad, claiming that rodeos make animals suffer from injury and stress. The pressure group said that broken necks, spines or even death is common among animals at rodeos.

Jan Creamer, chief executive of ADI, said: "We have complained to Barclaycard before about using performing animals in their TV ads and this ad in particular resonates with us because of the animal suffering associated with rodeos.

"In this case, it is not a matter of whether the animals suffered for the advert, but the fact that Barclaycard is making light of an activity that is so cruel that it would be illegal here in the UK. Barclaycard is being completely irresponsible promoting rodeos this way."

The advert was created by agency Bartle Bogle Hegarty (BBH). A BBH spokeswoman said that proper care was taken when animals are used in adverts.

ADI has written to Mangan and Rhind-Tutt urging them to denounce rodeos.

The group has had notable success in preventing animals being used in ads. Toyota stopped using an elephant in its spots, Seiko watches promised a review of using animals in ads and the GMB Union said that it won't use creatures in any of its future campaigns.

Soon there'll be no animals on telly at all. I mean come on. They don't get paid a fee for appearances, they don't have an agent*, they can't pick and choose their work. And as for wildlife programmes with all those intrusive cameras filming their every single move 24/7 , it's a violation of their animal rights.

* apart from Pippin the dog obviously :)
