Oneshot - what might have happened if things had gone differently the day that Mac met Mackenzie

Mac lead the way to the hospital canteen stony faced. His suspicions had been raised the moment he’d seen Holly’s stupid face arrive in East Hampton that she was here for something other than a job. It was too much to be coincidence. And now this; some ginger child with long hair who was supposedly his, or so Holly was inferring.

Fat chance.

He made a point of not offering to get her a drink or anything; instead he sat down and said abruptly, “So you said you had a good reason?”

Holly looked taken aback.

“Well…I think he’s yours.”

“You *think* he’s mine.”

She gave that stupid wide-mouthed grin and nodded.

“So…any proof of this? Any DNA tests?”

“Well, no…but…Mac, aren’t you excited? You always said you wanted kids.”

His face softened into a smile.

“Yeah…I would love kids. And I would have loved to have kids with you, four years ago. Now let me think why that didn’t happen…oh yeah, that’s right. ‘Spanner in the works’, I think that was your phrase, wasn’t it? Just before you were going to kill our unborn child”

“Well” she said uncertainly, “It was. I think I might have changed my mind.”

“Obviously”, Mac replied dryly.

There was an awkward silence for a few moments before she took a breath again.

“So, do you think we could make a go of it? Provide Mackenzie with the loving family he needs?”

He closed his eyes and thought back to all the time he’d spent with Holly. He remembered how funny and clever and adorable she’d been, how she’d always seemed to know what he wanted. How much fun they’d had together.

And then he remembered meeting Dr Caroline Todd. She hadn’t been as sweet or as kind as Holly. In fact Caroline had been rude and abrasive from the start, assuming Mac would care about her petty ins and outs. She was clumsy and scruffy, sarcastic, thoughtless, ditzy and…a million times the woman Holly would ever be.

Mac opened his eyes and looked Holly in the eye.

“Even if you could prove that this child is mine - which I highly doubt - I won’t be his father. It’s too much for me. I’m not a part of his life, or yours, and I don’t want to be.”

Holly’s face crumpled with shock for a moment.

“Seriously?”

He nodded once, and pushed his chair back. She looked like she was going to say something else for a moment, and then shrugged.

“Fine. You’ll regret it later” she said, and Mac smiled.

“You know what? I think that’s pretty unlikely.”

He turned around and left the canteen, feeling like a load had been lifted off his heart.

Caroline finished lighting the last tea light and rubbed her hands together nervously. After the last romantic encounter she’d had with candles she’d been a bit nervous (it had taken weeks for her eyebrows to grow back). But Boyce, after raising his payment to £10, had told her that Mac was a sucker for the traditional romantic stuff. So, a silky slip and candles it was.

But god, she was nervous. What if she was being too forward and he thought she was just being a slut?

It was too late now. She could hear footsteps on the stairs and the sound of the key in the lock. God, what if he’d brought someone back with him? Hauling herself up gracelessly on the pool table she said a quick prayer, and breathed a sigh of relief as he walked in alone and closed the door behind him.

“Wow, Dr Todd” he said, his voice wavering slightly. “You’re looking even more stunning than usual tonight.”

“Thanks. I um…I hope you don’t mind me breaking in…”

He crossed the room in a couple of strides and propped himself up on the table, his hands resting on the wood either side of her hips.

“On the contrary…I think you should do it more often.”

It would have been a good time to say something witty and/or alluring, Caroline thought to herself, but the close proximity of Mac and the way that he was breathing on that sensitive patch of skin on her neck made it very difficult to think of anything at all to say.

He moved away slightly and Caroline regained the power of semi-coherent thought just as Mac opened his mouth.

“I’ve got a bit of a dilemma here” he said thoughtfully. Her heart stopped – he was seeing someone else, he had some terminal illness, he didn’t like her like that?

“See, I’m kind of torn between doing the gentlemanly thing and offering you a drink, and doing the not-gentlemanly thing. What do you think?”

Caroline blinked, relieved.

“Well, that would depend what the non-gentlemanly thing would entail.”

She lifted her eyes coyly to meet his and without warning he lunged forward, crushing their mouths together in an urgent kiss. Goosebumps sprang up on her arms as she kissed him eagerly back. One of his hands meandered up her back, stroking *that* spot on her neck until she moaned shamelessly into his mouth. She could even feel him grin, his soft lips curving against hers.

Reluctantly they pulled apart for breath, but Mac’s hands remained where they were – one on her hip, keeping her in place, and one tangled in her hair.
His blue eyes were dark with lust and his cheeks flushed, and the sight of him turned her on more than she could stand.

“Mac” she said unsteadily, “I think you might have to be decidedly un-gentlemanly or I’m going to have to kill you.”

He quirked an eyebrow at her and smiled, and she could have sworn her knees were actually melting.

“Well, I’d rather not be killed. I can think of much more fun ways of spending the evening rather than dead.”

She wrapped her legs around him, pulling him closer, and laughed.

“Well hurry up and kiss me then!”

Mac obliged willingly. Now their bodies were so close she could feel how turned on he was…about as turned on as her. His lips slid tantalisingly to her jaw and then down to her neck, nipping and sucking. And how the hell did he know that that was her most sensitive spot? She groaned and arched up against him, feeling him pushing back.

Mac looked down at her. Her eyes were closed, her cheeks were flushed and her lips were red from kissing. She was, quite simply, the most beautiful thing he’d laid eyes on. The memory of Holly from a few hours earlier made him smile – to think he’d once wasted years on her.

Scooping Caroline up in his arms, he headed towards the bedroom, his lips not leaving hers. The door, thankfully, opened with a nudge, and he laid her gently down on the bed. Her grip was so strong that he was pulled down with her, and her cool hands slid up his t-shirt, running lightly over his stomach and skimming his nipples. Years ago, on a drunken night out, Guy had mocked Mac for having sensitive nipples. At this moment in time Mac wouldn’t have given them up for the world. Every time Caroline’s nails grazed over them sharp spikes of pleasure drove through him, setting his nerve endings on fire.

Finally managing to manoeuvre his uncooperative hands into action, Mac slid his hand up Caroline’s thigh, grabbing the silk that covered her and sliding it over her head. He was gratified to see that she wasn’t wearing underwear; it was the first time he’d seen her naked and it was no disappointment. His eyes skimmed down her slender form, lingering for a moment on the pert breasts. She frowned up at him.

“You’re too un-naked” she complained breathily, and he didn’t stop to enquire after the meaning of ‘un-naked’. At any rate, stripping off his t-shirt eased the frown from her brow, and her hands fumbled at his belt, and then the buttons of his jeans, and then finally his boxers.

Caroline slid her hands down his arms, wondering if she’d ever been around anyone so beautiful, let alone naked and in bed. He was lean but toned with a scattering of freckles. His sandy hair hung over his eyes but she could still see them twinkling as he leaned down to kiss her senseless again.

“Are you sure about this?” he asked, pulling away reluctantly. She looked up at him as though he was insane – what part of her behaviour could have indicated that she didn’t want this? Seeing that he needed confirmation, Caroline nodded and trailed a finger down his cheek.

“Yes”, she said, “Yes to everything. To tonight, and to next week, and to however long we can last together.”

“Wow” he smiled. “I couldn’t have put it better myself.”

They slid together effortlessly, the only sound to be heard ragged breathing which paused momentarily as Mac slid inside Caroline. They froze, both getting accustomed to the sensation, and then he shifted inside her and she made some incoherent noise.

“Alright?” he asked softly, caressing her cheek. Caroline nodded mutely, her hand snaking around Mac’s back and pulling him closer. Her legs wrapped around his waist and he sank deeper inside, rocked back and pushed back in. After that, Caroline was lost – the time passed in an eternity and a second all at the same time, full of gasps and incoherent moans, skin on skin and pure, unbridled lust.

And then suddenly all of Caroline’s nerve endings were tingling and she felt herself tense up and her vision tunnelled in to a dark spot, and then everything exploded and she tightened against Mac. She felt him freeze, moan, and exhale, and clutched at him as though he would disappear if she let go. She felt him squeeze back, holding her tight as they came down together, heart rates returning to normal.

He slumped down to the side of her, pulling her in close to his chest and running one hand through her hair. Caroline’s eyes fluttered as she tried in vain to keep them open.

“What happens now?” she asked.
“What do you mean?”

“I…I don’t know.”

Mac took pity on her and propped himself up on one elbow.

“I don’t know either” he admitted. “I don’t know what the future holds. But…I’m not going to let you go. Not this time.”

Caroline snuggled further in.

“This time,” she murmured, “I don’t think I’m going to let you let me go.”
