Background: A sort of What If Fic in the Harry Potter World, Dumbledore along with the help of James and Sirius had managed to destroy Voldemort and both Neville and Harry have parents, Draco Malfoy is still Harry Potters enemy but only cos in their first year James managed to throw Snape in prison and in second year Sirius put Lucius in too

My fic setting: Harry Potters third year....

Short Beginning Bit

"Were having about four new professors this year!" Hermione swept her bushy brown hair off her forehead as the carriage they were sitting in bumped and rocked its way up to Hogwarts Castle, "A new Transfiguration mistress and a Charms, a Defense Against The Dark Arts and Potions master."

"Knew about Potions and Defense Against The Dark Arts as Snape has been safely emprisoned in Azkaban and Malfoy followed," Harry said, "But what happened to McGonnagal and Flitwick?"

Hermione shrugged, "I dont know. All I know is theyre not coming back this year."

"Gonna miss Lockhart?" Ron asked Hermione who stuck her nose in the air and refused to answer that question.

"No!" she said, a bit too loudly, "I dont really think Im gonna miss him anyway!"

"Course not," Ron responded, "Hey isnt Lupin a Professor this year?!"

Harry smiled broadly, "One mystery professor uncovered, three to go. I wonder who they could be."

"So long as theyre not like Snape and Malfoy Snr, I dont care," Ron said, voicing the opinion of Harry and Hermione with his usual talent.

"Four relatively young, good natured professors + Weasley twins = Quite a tricky solution," James Potter and Arthur Weasley had pretty much both said when Lupin had told them he was Professor, anxiety betraying their cheerful demeanour, "Maybe you or Mac could go down early, in the Weasley twins adjoining carriage to make sure they do respect you. After all Guy and Sue are like grown-up versions of them! Theyll be a nightmare if Guy or Sue does decide to encourage them."

Lupin had decided to take their advice when he saw Guy, Sue, Fred and George jump away from the fireplace, looking innocent just as sparks exploded from it from a firework Fred had stuck up it a few minutes before.

He was now sitting, quietly in the Weasley twins compartment, listening to them chat animatedly with Lee Jordan until the compartment door slid open and a pretty, dark-haired girl came in.

"Hi Lee," she said, smiling brightly, "Fred, George, what about some Owl Post next summer huh?!"

"What you mean?!" George looked affronted.

"We wrote you heaps of letters!" Fred added, "Its not our fault youre too lazy to reply!"

"I give up on you two," Angelina shook her dark head, "Have you seen Hermione? I want to have an intelligent conversation with a girl whos one topic of conversation is not Cedric Diggory."

"Oh dont mention him! He wont even look at me!" wailed George.

"I dont think he even knows I exist!" Fred began to cry, fake sobs racking his body but grinning broadly a few minutes later as Lupin gave a snort of laughter.

"Ugh I dont know why Im friends with you three," Angelina said, shaking her head.

"Cos you love us," Fred smiled, "Ms. Granger happens to be in the compartement four down from us and two from Malfoy."

Angelina nodded her thanks and left.

"Ms Granger," mused Lee, "is one attractive young lady."

"Dont try snagging her," Fred warned, "Ron would kill you."

"As you have now been fed and watered," Albus Dumbledore called as he stood up and the babble of happy talk died away, "I have a few announcements to make. Firstly Id like to say to the new students Welcome. To our old students, Welcome back. A new year brings changes but lets start with the well-known items. No students are allowed enter the Forbiddon Forest. And Filch, has kindly reminded me to let you all know any items from Zonkos Joke Shop willl be confiscated immediately. If youre uncertain as what counts as a Zonkos product just ask any of our old students and theyll be bound to rid you of your uncertainty." He flashed a twinkling-eyed but gently reproving stare at the Weasley twins and Lupin saw Fred and George grin innocently back.

"Now to our new items, we have a record number of new professors," Dumbledore continued, "Five in all. Professor Hagrid is filling the role of Care of Magical Creatures professor, Professor Lupin is stepping into the shoes of Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, in Transfiguration Professor White has slid into that role. Professor Secretan is Charms professor and Professor Macartney is Potions master."

A enthuastic round of applause broke the silence, loudest at the Gryffindor table.

"Now off to bed," Dumbledore called, "Sleep tight."

The babble of chatter broke out again and the students got up to leave the hall. Lupin stood up and waited for Sue, Mac and Guy to join him, smiling as Harry, Ron and Hermione, beaming went over to Hagrid to congratulate him.

"Trying to kill each other again?" Sue White, walked into the Transfiguration class, stepping over Harry and Draco wrestling on the classroom floor and flicked her wand so the two were dangling upside down, heads lolling. A general shout of laughter split the stunned silence. Hermione merely looked disapproving.

"Fifth time this has happened, fifteen points each from Gryffindor and Slytherin," Sue said, calmly, "And detention together for two weeks."

"Detention?!" Harry spluttered.

"Together?!" Draco looked outraged.

"That isnt fair!" they both cried.

"Okay Ill skip the detention part IF," Sue flicked her wand again and the two boys found themselves hanging near the chandelier, "you two stop creating scenes. Youre thirteen years old, youre not babies. Hate each other by all means, send childish insults at each other, go ahead but try to physically kill each other and Ill give you detention together for a month. Is that understood?"

Both boys looked at each other then at the serene-looking Transfiguration mistress and nodded, mutely.

"Excellent," Sue smiled and flicked her hand, sending both boys landing in their seats. Judging by their winces, they had landed uncomfortably.

"So today we will be learning the charm to transfigure a snail into a daisy," Sue said, "Or we might transfigure Potter and Malfoy into slugs if they dont start to pay attention."

Both boys sat up, looking mortified and even Hermione cracked a smile at this.

"Its your fault," Draco scowled at the back of Harry's head which was bent over the trophy he was polishing, "that Im stuck with you for detention for the next two weeks."

"Its YOUR fault," Harry responded, coolly, not looking at Draco, "that we got the bloody detention in the first place Malfoy!"

"All I did was call Granger a mudblood," Draco said, moodily, "That usually only gets me a "Shut Your Mouth Malfoy" not a physical assault."

"What have you been taking?" Harry spun round and stared in shock at the glaring Slytherin, "You almost got cursed by Ron by calling her that last year. And Flint had to dive in front of you to stop Fred and George bashing you into a pulp."

Draco ignored this, looked moodily at the trophy he was polishing and scowled. Not only wasnt he allowed to use magic to clean the trophies - a moral sin in his opinion - but the trophy he'd chosen to polish only happened to be Potters Special Award For Services To The School one. He looked slowly round at Potter who wasnt paying attention to him now he'd fallen back into silence and raised his wand.

"Hi boys!" trilled Sue, appearing at Dracos elbow causing him to shriek like a girl and drop his wand, "Just thought Id supervise you before Filch does."

Draco looked miserable. The night surely couldnt get any worse.

No no no its not unfair I promise!!! Go on you know you want to...

Draco Malfoy felt humiliated. Shrieking like a girl half an hour ago when Professor White had popped up at his elbow and startled him had sent Potter into spasms of laughter and judging by the twinkle in his green eyes, Potter was still amused by that. He sulked somewhat but suddenly a smile crossed his face as he looked at the trophy he was now polishing. It was a trophy for Lucius Malfoy and it was to symbolise he was Slytherin Quidditch Captain and Seeker.

So thats where I got that gift of being okay-ish at Quidditch, he thought, wryly as he sent a glance at Potter. He saw Potter smile softly down at the trophy he was polishing and without hesitating moved over to look at the trophy Harry was looking at. Awarded to James Potter, Gryffindor Quidditch Captain and Seeker.

"Whats that trophy Malfoy?" Harry asked, indicating the trophy Draco was clutching.

"Erm, just a trophy saying my father was Quidditch Captain," Draco said, simply but his eyes were drawn to the dates on each trophy, both were in the 1970s. His eyes met Harrys who also had noticed the dates.

"My father and yours were rivals in Quidditch," Harry said, a smile twisting his lips, "Ironic much? And judging by the contempt Lucius shows for me, they obviously werent best friends."

"They werent, my father hated yours," Draco replied, his eyes glinting, "Now if it turns out that James turned down my fathers hand in friendship on the Hogwarts Express, thatll make things too weird to even think about."

To Dracos surprise, Harry looked slightly shame-faced as the reminder of WHY there was all this animosity between them was pointed out to him.

"I knew your fathers," Sue said, obviously completely at ease with eavesdropping on her students.

Both Harry and Dracos heads snapped round, both of their eyes obviously saying TELL US ABOUT THEM.

Sue leant back comfortably and promptly fell as she realised too late there was nothing behind her.

"Ahem," Harry said, drily, walking into the common room hours later and catching his two best friends kissing by the fire. They sprang apart almost instantly and in the seconds it took for Hermione to smooth her hair and Rons mouth to drop open as he obviously tried to think of what to say, Harry had sat down.

"She made me do it!" Ron burst out.

Harry raised his eyebrows, "Ron, Ive heard you say stupid stuff before but that was the lamest excuse Ive ever heard when your best friend catches you kissing a girl whos also been your best friend for two years."

"You know Ron, he doesnt think before he speaks," Hermione said, sitting on the sofa beside Ron who seemed to be locked in an internal battle before he gave in and linked his fingers through hers. Hermione went very pink but she looked happy.

"So how was detention with Malfoy?" Ron asked.

Harry considered before he spoke, his lips twisting into a wry smile. It hadnt been what he had expected, "It was........ surprising."

"Why?" Hermione asked, "What happened?"

Harry rubbed his forehead, "You wouldnt believe it if I told you. But here it goes. Up until the end of their fourth year my dad and Lucius Malfoy were....."

He fell silent at this, wishing Professor White had kept her piece of information to herself.

"They were best friends, they were really close," Harry said, deciding to continue with the story, "They had a sort of friendship circle with Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew and someone else lurking on the sides."

"Deatheaters mixing with Aurors," Ron smiled, "The Dark and the Light, friends at school."

"Oh whats worse is that Snape was the someone else lurking on the sides, he was apparently close friends with Sirius," Harry allowed himself a soft laugh, "Thats something I can barely even imagine."

"So why did they stop being friends?" Hermione asked, looking intently at Harry, "I mean Snape and Lucius Malfoy postively hate your father, Sirius and Professor Lupin now."

Harry rubbed his forehead, a boiling dislike for Snape and Lucius Malfoy returning to him, "Snape told everyone in the Slytherin House that Lupin was a werewolf and Lucius turned everyone in Slytherin against Lupin."

Hermione looked aghast, Ron, furious.

Draco Malfoy hadnt slept well. Well after Professor White had told him James Potter was Lucius Malfoy's best friend for years, Draco had felt mildly disconcerted. Make that extremely disconcerted and thinking about how if he acted differently he would have been James Potter's son's friend hadnt helped matters. He rubbed his forehead irritably and made no move to get out of bed.

"Malfoy, can we go to the Great Hall without you?" Crabbe asked.

"Yeah we're kinda hungry," Goyle added.

Draco allowed himself to half smile, "Go. Ill be there soon."

He laughed, softly, despite his preoccupation as his friends practically dashed out of the dormitory.

I need to talk to Potter, he thought and quickly got out of bed, not even imagining that floors above him, Harry Potter was getting off his seat in the Great Hall and telling his friends he'll see them later but he needed to talk to someone immediately.

Which is why when he crashed into Harry Potter outside the Slytherin common room, both looked half surprised, half relieved to find the other.

"Potter."

"Malfoy."

"We need to talk," they said, simultaneously.
