Title: The Trench

bingle - September 10, 2006 02:39 AM (GMT)
Not sure if this has been posted before. I can't see it anywhere, but then I haven't got my specs on so it might be lurking in a corner somewhere and I've missed it.

Has anyone else seen this?

I watched it this morning and thought it was quite good, despite the fact that JRT is sporting some less than attractive facial hair!

:pelt

Before you all throw rotten tomatoes at me for making that comment, I do think the man is a god, but if you've seen this film then you'll understand what I mean about the moustache - it's a flaw on otherwise perfect features.

It also stars loads of other people like Daniel Craig, James Darcy, Danny Dyer, Paul Nicholls...

Ohhh was it on telly  I am not a facial hair lover, so am not offended by your facial hair comment :thumbsup

Is it a big part and does he have to "go over the top" never to be seen again :sob

bingle - September 10, 2006 02:19 PM (GMT)
No, it wasn't on tv but I was treating myself to a few dvds to cheer myself up, and I thought I'd give it a go.
He does have quite a big part in it, and because it isn't really an action war film you get a lot of 'character' rather then just explosions and carnage. It's obvious how it ends, but the film is more about individuals within the war than the overall war itself (if that makes any sense?!).
It basically follows one platoon in the final 36hours before the Battle of the Somne. JRT plays the officer, and Daniel Craig plays the sergeant.

Not the best film ever made, but definitely worth a look if you can get hold of a copy.

After the end of Blackadder Goes Forth, I'm not sure I could stand another ending like that (assuming the ending is in a similar vein) but it sounds interesting so I might see if I can track it down. I'd never heard of it before so thanks for the info, bingle.

bingle - September 10, 2006 10:49 PM (GMT)
It is very similar to Blackadder ending, but then they couldn't really 'keep it real' without that. It is worth watching tho - just have a box of tissues handy!!

Little_Simba - September 19, 2006 04:59 AM (GMT)
I'm already sniffing and I haven't even seen it!

I take it this is a dramatic film?

bingle - September 20, 2006 04:53 PM (GMT)
Yes definitely a drama rather than a comedy.
(Although having rewatched it, Daniel Craig's accent and JRT's 'tache should be given their own comedy show!)
Still definitely worth watching tho.

IMO - January 21, 2007 03:42 PM (GMT)
I've only gone and done it. I've ordered the DVD :high

Well I was ordering two of The Office DVD's from HMV so just tagged Trench on as well :)

xjessx - January 21, 2007 03:47 PM (GMT)
There a picture of him on the back of the DVD you can see the ears haha

I quite liked the film, it wasnt as dark if you kow what i mean, i guess hollywood films decided against sunshine!!
Julians character is quite sweet, i dont think you get to learn enough about the characters to be honest, cos there is an under story to julian and daniel craigs characters which are begging to be told!

Maybe that's the sign of very good acting, making us believe there's more to their characters then just the measily scripts they've been given. Not that I can comment on this really as I haven't seen it yet

xjessx - January 23, 2007 02:33 PM (GMT)
I liked it, i can say if you do or not, but Julians moustache is just adorable, but im sure the end will make you cry, as it did me!!!

QueenGW - January 23, 2007 04:29 PM (GMT)
i may have to watch this..........just to see what ur all on about hehee

IMO - January 31, 2007 05:42 PM (GMT)
Well having purchased the DVD at great expense  the BBC have decided to show the film for free next Monday 5 Feb at 11.35 pm on BBC1.

I managed to watch my very expensive DVD a couple of days ago and I hope JRT never has to act with a moustache again :o

!
Can now fully agree with xjessx now I've watched my very expe......... etc. etc. They could have explored these two characters a lot more, but they were obviously concentrating more on the young lads, but even then we don't get much more insight with them.

guyoline - January 31, 2007 06:07 PM (GMT)

Well JRT hardly appears in the DVD extras, and it's not really the sort of film you're going to watch over and over again, so it's probably just worth recording it off the telly ;)

xjessx - February 1, 2007 06:36 PM (GMT)

nashers - February 5, 2007 11:03 PM (GMT)
