Prologue

We know virtually nothing about our world, and even less about the universe that surrounds it. Every day, we advance our technologies and sciences. And, while we think we're moving forward, what we are doing is really going backwards.

The peoples of the past all had different ways of getting through the day. Many of which involved magic’s that they had created, which science today has proven doesn't work.

But what if it did? What if those magical cures and items of the past worked? A childish idea… or at least I used to think so.

My name is Sam Hunt, and I used to be a person, just like you. Or, at least a full person. Now I’m not sure what I really am. Part of me wants to stay the tall, brown haired human that I was born. He other half, wants to stay in the other world, where humans don’t exist. Where I’m a tall brown furred half cat, half person.

This other world is a place that no one can really understand until they’ve been there. It is a world without pain (Well, without extreme pain anyway.), suffering, or war. It’s a world where magic exists, and death is simply part of the life cycle. When one dies there, they are simply reincarnated as another. In truth, it has no real name, but I believe the only name deserving of such a wonderful place is Eden, which is what I’ve come to know it as.

But yet, it isn’t truly my world, what right do I have to live there? Sometimes I wonder what will happen to me when I die. Will I be reincarnated as well, or just move on?

Sometimes I wonder if I’m insane, and in a mental asylum. After all, a world where anything is possible is just fiction, right? But, I know that it’s real, there’s just something about it that makes me know I’m sane.

I guess Claire is living proof that the world is real as well. I’ve known her my whole life, and sometimes I wonder if she’ll ever grow up. Even as the detective she is today, she still is as unpredictable as when we first came to Eden. As for me, I’ve changed quite a bit from the skeptical teen I once was.

My tale begins at my high school, at about 2:53 p.m. I’ll never forget that day, Claire was getting notes for a Literature project she was starting from the Library…

-------------

Chapter 1:

My fourth block teacher let the class out a few minutes early, which was not all too unusual. We had nothing left to do, and then decided she wanted to get out just a few minutes early herself. She did this usually once a week, and today was that day of the week, Friday.

I walked through the halls of the school, and decided to see if anyone else was out yet. I walked past the library door, and took a step back to it. I looked inside, and saw my friend Claire taking notes at one of the computers. I opened the door, and walked into the fairly large library.

It was probably only the second time I had been in here this year. The walls were all covered by dark brown wood shelves; each one had at least twenty or so books on it. There was one woman behind a counter, checking out books to a few people who needed them. I took a look at the rather plain black and white clock on the wall, 2:53… I better hurry up, I thought watching as the woman behind the counter checked out another book.

I ignored her, and went straight to Claire, poked her shoulder, “Hey.” I greeted. She turned from the computer, her bright green eyes staring up at my own brown ones.

“Hey,” she replied, and turned back. She had apiece of paper on the table in front of her, right next to the computer, “You got everything you need for the project?” She asked keeping her voice fairly low.

She was a fairly normal looking girl. Long red hair ran down past her shoulders, and rested on her back. She was wearing a black jacket, and blue jeans. She was still wearing her smirk, as she almost always was.

I looked up at her computer’s screen, reading something about Shakespeare, “I’m not in English yet.” I retorted quietly.

She smirked, “Oh, right. So why are you here then?”

“I could ask you the same thing. don’t you have Spanish right now?” I asked, knowing the answer already.

“I skipped. You get out early again or something?” She asked, writing down a few more notes.

Just as I was about to reply, the school bell rang. It was time to leave, and Claire kept on writing notes, “Aren’t you gonna leave?” I asked, checking my backpack to make sure I didn’t leave anything.

“One minute… I’ve got a few more notes I want to take before going.”

“Can’t you just do this at home?” I asked her, not wanting to miss my bus.

“I’ve got plans tonight, I can’t.” She kept writing, though for some reason, it seemed to me like she was writing slowly. Did she want to miss the bus?

“We’re gonna miss the bus if we stay here too long.” I informed her, not wanting to have to leave her here.

“Then go, I’ve got to finish.” She said, copying down a few more words.

“And ride home alone? That’s so boring though. You know I can’t stand the people on our bus, not without anyone to talk to.” I replied, sitting next to her.

“Aw, so you just want to be with me. How sweet.” She joked, and began chuckling at her own joke.

“Nah, I just get bored there. I think it’d probably just be better to walk sometimes.” I joked, not actually meaning what I said.

She smirked, “So why don’t we?”

“Why don’t we what? Walk home? It’s kind of a long walk.”

“It’s not that bad. C’mon, if we miss the buses, we’ll walk, how bout that?”

I don’t know why I said it, but I did, “Fine.”

-----

Twenty minutes later, we were on the streets, walking in the direction of our homes, “I can’t believe we missed the buses.” I said, letting out a small sigh. It wasn’t really that bad walking. It was finally warming up to a normal temperature after a few cold days. Plus, I liked being outside too. I was actually getting to see a lot of the places I usually just got a glance of when I rode the bus.

Claire chuckled, and looked at me, “Well, at least I got all my notes taken care of.”

I chuckled at that, “Yeah, what would you do without getting that done at school. You might have to do some…” I made a fake shudder, “Homework.”

“Hey, I do my work. Just not necessarily on the correct date. Besides, I told you, we’ve got plans tonight.” She had a malicious grin painted on her face when she spoke.

“We?” I replied, confused.

“Yeah, I found something really cool a week ago, and I figured I should show it to you.”

“Do I have a choice in this?” I asked, noticing we were getting pretty close to our neighborhood.

“Not at all.”

“What is it?” I asked a little intrigued.

We were out front of our neighborhood now, and she still had that same evil grin on her face. She took the lead, and began walking across the street. I followed as well, my curiosity growing. I knew it wasn’t going to be anything good, yet I followed anyway. I stared at her long red hair as I walked behind her.

She took me into the woods across the street, pretty far in too. She looked up at me, “Okay, now that no one can see us, I can show you what I was talking about.” She made a fist, and then extended her right index finger. She put it on my forehead a second later.

“Uhh, Can I ask wh..” She cut me off with a sharp “Shh.”

She started mumbling something, and I tried to listen, not understanding a word. It sounded like gibberish to me, but yet something about it seemed odd. Like it was from some kind old ritual or something like that.

She took her finger off my head, and said, “Just kidding.” She began to laugh, “I think you were starting to go along with me for a second there!”

“What was that all about?” I asked, she replied with a shrug, “I was bored, it just came to me.” She was lying though, there was something weird with what she did, something I didn’t understand.

Then, in one second, my head was on fire. I grabbed it to try and feel what was going on, but there was nothing there. I saw Claire’s mouth move, but I couldn’t hear her. I felt for my ears, only to find they were gone completely! No blood, no hole, just nothing.

I fell to the ground, staring at Claire who stared back at me. She looked like she didn’t care, she even smiled!

I looked down, and saw my whole body was disappearing, Oh god, I thought, staring back up at Claire, who herself was starting to disappear, her head already gone, What did she do! I panicked as everything went black…

Sounds pretty promising thus far. ^_^

Just remember not to forgo details. They help to keep interest, and make it seem like the story's not flowing too fast....

Chapter 2

I opened my eyes, and saw nothing but several miles of nothing. I looked down, and couldn’t even make out my own body. The fiery pain in my brain came back all of the sudden as the world around me started to form. The blackness changed to a small dark patch of grass, surrounded by several very large trees. Past the trees was a very thick layer of mist which made any chance at looking beyond the general area impossible.

The pain finally began to fade, and I could begin to concentrate on figuring out where I was. I stood up, and walked around the perimeter, trying to get an idea of where I might be. It was useless though, the fog was too thick. I stood at the edge of the clearing for a moment, and tried to figure out what happened.

I sighed, “Let’s see… Claire told me she wanted to show me something, then put her finger on my forehead, I passed out, and now I’m here.” I took another glance around, “Question is, where is here?”

“This is what I wanted to show you.” A familiar voice said from behind me. I smirked and turned around, “Claire! What happened, where are we?” She stood there in front of me, though something was odd about her. Something I didn’t like.

“This is where I take all of my victims.” She said, an devious tone in her voice. She was smiling, “Now, it’s your turn.” She told me, and held up an open palm, and her eyes began to glow red. She closed her palm into a fist a split second later, and I knew I should move, but I just couldn’t for some reason.

It all happened so quick, just as she closed her palm, the ground under me cracked in several directions, and then suddenly broke from under me exposing a large pit with spikes at the bottom, “Oh Shiii-!” I yelled as I fell down into the hole.

I watched the spikes under me, my fear growing to insane levels as the spikes came closer as I dropped. I knew the end was close, and I shut my eyes, just as I was a bout to be implaed. Then, just as suddenly as it had happened, it was all gone.

------

I was surrounded by darkness again, though this time I knew why, my eyes were closed. I felt like I was still falling, and I opened my eyes to see nothing but the clouds underneath me, quickly coming closer, “Son of a bitch!” I yelled as I kept falling, passing by the clouds still gaining speed.

I could see the ground under me, green grass, several trees, and a town? I’ve never seen that place before, where am I?! I thought, seeing buildings in the distance that were nothing like what was back at home.

It didn’t really matter though. I already knew my fate was sealed. It would all be over once I hit the ground. I began to panic, No! I can’t die, not yet! I still have too much to do! Wait a minute, this must be a dream! That’s it! How else can any of this be explained! When I hit the ground, I’ll probably just wake up, that’s all. These were my thoughts as the ground grew ever nearer. I looked straight down, and saw two dots on the grass growing larger as I neared them. One was a dark bluish color, and the other one was completely white.

“Oh well,” I said as the ground came within about fifty feet of me, “I’m about to wake up anyway.” I hit the ground with an extremely large THUD. My eyes were closed when I hit, and I opened them right after impact.

My whole body ached, and I felt like I was just hit by a truck. I looked up at the two dots from earlier, now only to find they were people… sort of. One was a white rabbit, who was wearing a large toothy smile. Her body was structured like a human female, yet she had rabbit features. She had long ears, a small pink nose, and a small fuzzy tail on her backside. I didn’t even notice I was staring at the girl. She slapped me slightly, “It’s rude to stare.” She said in that all too familiar voice.

“Claire? Is that you? What the hell is going on?” I asked, angry and confused. I began to realize that the spike pit incident was just a bad dream, I need to stop playing video games. I thought, trying to calm myself down.

“I wanted to show you this!” She began, excited, “Isn’t this awesome?”

“You wanted to show me that you were really a rabbit? Great, now take me home. I’ve had enough.” I said, barely able to keep myself from yelling at her.

“No not that I’m a rabbit. I wanted to show you this world! Roxy here told me it was okay to bring you!” She certainly was as peppy as a bunny.

I looked around the area where we were, and spoke, “Is this real? How am I still alive?” I asked, looking at my brown furry body, checking for any bleeding, or broken bones, or… “What the hell! I’m furry!” I yelled, not taking this very well.

“Isn’t that what you said you’re first time here?” The cat spoke. I looked up at her now. She was covered in blue fur, with cat ears, a long tail, and whiskers. Her eyes were even like a cat’s, green, with the small black slit of a pupil that cats had. She too was proportioned like a human female.

“Yeah, I think so.” Claire replied, chuckling. I looked back at myself, looking all over. I was covered in brown fur, and had retractable claws on my fingers. I felt up above my head, and found I had large pointy ears too, “Relax, you can’t die here like that. The only way to get killed here is by old…” She then noticed I wasn’t listening, and chuckled as I checked my new body out.

“Great,” I began lethargically, “I’m a cat. Now, can you explain to me why I’m a cat?” I asked my odd friend.

“Just whatever you get when you come here. You can’t change what you are.” She replied, and I grew angrier.

“That’s not what I meant. I meant, why did we change into animals!” I yelled at her, my fists clenched together.

“It’s just how the world is,” She replied, getting serious, “Humans don’t exist here, it’s impossible for them to. The only way we can come here is if our bodies change. The same goes for when someone from around here goes to earth. They become human.”

“Fine, whatever. Just change me back, and take me home. I can’t deal with this crap right now. Not after everything you just made me go through.”

“Hey! It was my first time trying to bring someone else here. It’s not easy!” She yelled back, “You should be happy I even let you come, so quit whining like some brat, and at least give this place a chance.”

“Happy? For practically destroying my brain, sending me into some crazy nightmare, and dropping me from several thousand feet in the air? Yeah, I’m real happy for that. Just take me home, okay?” I asked, trying to calm down.

She frowned, “I can’t, I spent too much energy taking you here. We won’t be able to get back until tomorrow. It’s harder than I thought it would be.”

“Well great,” I turned to the other cat here, and asked, “Can you take me home then?”

She shrugged, “I guess. C’mon Claire, he doesn’t seem to like this as much as you thought he would.” The cat girl began to walk up to me, extending her furry right index finger.

Claire stepped in front of her, stopping her from doing what I asked, “Not yet. C’mon Sam, you’ll like this place if you give it a chance. I’m only asking you to stay one night, and then that can be it, O.K?”

I took a look at the rabbit girl in front of me. I was still having a hard time believing it was the same girl I had known since third grade. I sighed, “Fine. One night. But you have to explain to my parents why I was gone.” Maybe I was just acting like a baby.

She perked up immediately, “Don’t even worry about them. Roxy taught me a spell that gives people false memories. I even used on you before!” She seemed to bounce as she talked, as if she was keeping in too much energy.

I stared at her, “Yeah, I don’t think it was necessary that I knew that.” I replied, somehow all of the anger leaving my system.

“Probably not!” She retorted happily, “But just look at this place, it’s nothing like home! Can’t you see why I like it?” She commented, looking at the town only about half a mile away.

I looked around for a moment, and then looked to the town. Something clicked in my head, and I smiled, “Maybe. Alright, so you mentioned a spell earlier? Like a magic spell?”

“Yup! I can do magic now thanks to this place!” She told me smiling.

The cat-girl, Roxy came up to us, “Only the basic stuff though, and you’re not even very good at that.” She joked, and then turned to me, “If you plan on coming back, I could teach you a few things too.” She said to me, smiling.

“Deal.” I said, smiling. Then I remembered, I forgot to introduce myself, “Oh, sorry I forgot too. I’m Sam Hunt.” I held out my hand to shake. Roxy simply stared at my arm, unsure what to do.

Soon she just looked up at me, and greeted, “I’m Roxy Amatus.” She grabbed my hand, guessing what she was supposed to do, “Good to meet you.”

As we stood there, our hands together, I didn’t know what happened, but in my head, I saw what seemed like a movie playing. I saw my human self, on top of a large building, and a girl with blue hair, moving in to kiss each other. It ended, and I was still holding on to Roxy’s hand. The girl looked confused, and turned to my rabbit friend, “Is this one of your human things?” She asked, and I pulled my hand away, feeling myself starting to blush.

“Nah, he’s just not very good at introductions, is all.” She joked, that smile still glued to her face.

“What? No it’s just I’m not... used to meeting people like this.”

“Well, get over it.” Claire retorted, fake mockingly.

Roxy looked back to the town, and spoke up, “Uh, guys, I think we better hurry up getting back. I’ve got a shop to tend to while Jo’s gone.”

“So then, are you coming?” Claire asked me as Roxy began to walk to the small town. She soon began to follow.

I looked at them, and smiled, “Of course.” I said, beginning my trip into this strange world.

I've decided to discontinue this as an inflation story, however, I'm going to continue it on Deviantart, without inflation.

I kinda discovered I can't really write inflation very well...

anyway, if you like it, and want to see where it's gonna go plotwise, check it out on Deviantart, it'll have the same name.
