To me Selphie is amongst my favourite female characters *^_^* With her exuberant cheerfulness, enthusiasm, friendliness, good naturedness towards others and her willingness to help them out she reminded me very much of Aerith when I first played *^_^* Also her unique special skills, Full Cure, Wall, Rapture and the End are like Aerith's in that they don't cause direct damage and affect status instead :lol: Like Aerith I also think that Selphie was a bright spot that stood out in the world, FFVII's with Aerith, FFVIII's with Selphie. Pink is a bright colour that stands out and I think it's the same with yellow :)

I’m joining the club. Selphie…even her name sounds happy! She brightened up my FF8 party with her perky disposition. She had a cute fascination with Laguna and always updated her webpage with data about him. I wonder how she must have felt when she met him and found he was much older than he had been in their dreams <_<
Also I love her and Irvine together, even though their relationship didn’t get much screen time. He’s always trying to get her attention(Fave quote “For me and Selphie!” when they’re running to fight the Galbadian party) and she’s always unaware of it. I seem to remember a scene in Trabia when you have Irvine in your party. I triggered a computer with Selphie’s data, Irvine stepped forward, and just when he was about to take a better look at it, she turns up and switches off the computer. Has anyone else seen that? :lol:
I found it quite strange, though, when Trabia garden was bombed and she didn’t show a shred of emotion. I mean, so many people died. Surely she had friends and comrades among them? I would have gone ballistic! :(

I love Selphie, so count me in! I'd pick her cheery nature over Squall's angst any day of the week. ^_^

I found her to be by far and away one of the best fighters in the game, and her limit breaks were an absolute joy. I really loved her happy-go-lucky persona and all these funny little quirks she had, like suggesting skinning the Moomba to escape from prision, and her being so enthusiastic about blowing up the Galbadian base (I was also really moved by the little speech she gave when the party were trapped there too). Such a quirky little character! :fangirl:

Plus yellow is cool. And her train-song made me laugh. :lol:

You know, she ended up predicting what would happen to all of them. Trains are kind of like Squall and the gang's destiny, they travel on one path and can't stray from it. And in the end, they really did travel to the future to stop Ultimecia! :lol:

Anyway Selphie Pairings

Unlike I do with most of my favourite characters I don't seem to have chosen lots of alternate pairings to squee over with Selphie :blink: With her I seem to be quite contented with her being paired with Irvine *^_^*

Ah, Selphie-parings...well, I just give her major credit for being the only female main character with good taste, as Irvine and Laguna are both far more preferable romantic options than Squall in my book... :puke: I honestly feel the same way as you Fury, and I'm not really interested in alternative Selphie pairings. SelphiexIrvine is just my cup of tea (although her little crush on Laguna was too cute!). :fangirl:

I personally felt she wasn't shown in her true character in KH because she should have been perkier and less romantic. .... :ermm: Selphie to me was a lot like a perky mixture of Yuffie and Aeris, Selphie was also very motherly and kind she was always hopeful and there to put a smile on your face! I usually remembered every FF characters Zodiac sign but I forgot Selphie's the other day, she's a Cancer. ;) Selphie was so sweet to those little kids and SelphieXIrvine is awesome, Selphie's just the type of gal to get Irvine to stop being such a whore! :lol:

I'm not a fan of Selphie/Laguna but I thought her small crush on Laguna was really cute! I loved how she documented his entire life through those issues of Timber Maniacs. "He is such a hunk!" Heheh :D Does anybody remember what happened when she finally met her "Sir Laguna"?
Zelphie...a lot of people love this but I'm not too sure about it. Selphie is so happy and Zell is so angry! :P

Edit: Hee, I just remembered another Selphie coupling I really like. SelphiexSeifer. Anyone else read Gummybears? It's a really AWESOME fic that got me hooked on this pairing

Regarding Selvine...I'm not agreeing with the perception that "Selphie will help Irvine change his ways..." Irvine doesn't seem like the guy who just 'sleeps around' to me. Okay we've seen him flirt a lot and we've seen him with a naughty magazine(Oh, c'mon! Zell and Squall prolly have secret stashes of 'em too! :lol: ) but we've also seen a deeper side of him: that he holds his childhood friends in high regard, that he cares deeply about the ones closest to him etc. So I don't think he'll just drop Selphie for the next Tifa-esque girl that comes along.
With Selphie as a girlfriend, Irvine will prolly still be a flirt but with an invisible sign that says "I'm just fooling around...don't mind me..." Will Selphie be upset by this? Well, I've always pictured her dealing with it ni her own genki way:

Selphie: *teasingly* "Okay, that's it! If I ever see you talking to her again, you are dumped, mister!"
Irvine: "Noooo! Oh, c'mon Sefie, she can't compare to you..."
And then he turns all his charms on her, she threatens to dump him next time...but deep inside, they know they're still each others' :P

Irvine was NOT a man whore, he just flirted to get noticed and create a facade for himself because he wasn't impressed by what he was really like. Did anyone else notice that after the Orphanage flash-back Irvine STOPPED flirting with anyone BUT Selphie?

~cough~ To defend the case that I've said something sounding a lot like that before, what I mean is Selphie's more of the girl that made Irvine change his ways, of course at first he obviously flirted a lot (and he doesn't seem like the type to sleep around :lmao: ) I think Selphie being there made him stop flirting so much, I hope I wasn't the only one who noticed it, but after a while he just kinda stopped flirting with everyone and paid attention to Selphie. :wub:

I actually don't mind Selphie with Zell either, they're cute! Plus I hate Zell being alone, he's a cutie. But I do think Irvine and her are cute, and it's sweet how he mellowed out on the flirting.

As far as Selphie herself, I think she's a great character, she's unique and caring, and it's not even annoying!

Even though I wub Rinoa, I have to agree. The thing that makes people anti, I think, is their overall thought of the character, they probably haven't played that game in a while and have forgotten about every single special moment and just concentrated on what was given at the MAJOR points of the game (major points of FF8 being all Squall and Rinoa). I think the overall thought of Selphie is just 'spunky cute girl' to most people like Yuffie, Eiko, and Rikku, that's become a Final Fantasy stereotype, the cute maybe slightly younger or immature girl of the group who's perky and cheery. ^_^; I dunno, I always think most anti people really don't understand the character and the game the character is in that they hate. Then again there are usually a few anti folk who have good reasons...a few.

Well, I've played FF8 so many times and I still don't like Rinoa...she was well developed but her personality just didn't appeal to me.
But seeing that Selphie wasn't as developed as Rinoa...maybe people just 'surface skim' her bright personality...stereotyping, like Rikku said.

See? ^_^ I think you're probably one of the few who has a good reason, recently I've replayed FF8 and FFX and there were so many things I missed with each of the characters that you figure out by replaying (that goes for me for each game but FF7, I've played that game so many times I already know the characters enough). Most people forget about that moment with Selphie and the kids, showing her more motherly side and that even when there's nothing left Selphie still keeps here bright personality and makes sure no one gives up hope, I also feel that Selphie's lost a lot between Yuffie and Rikku because the three girls resemble each other so much people forget their differences.

Another thing I've noticed is that Selphie for the most part fits the physical description of what the general Cancer would look like; "Their hair is usually brown, their faces round, their complexions pale, their foreheads prominent, their eyes small and blue or gray in color, their noses short, perhaps upturned, and their mouths full. They sometimes walk clumsily. " Except Selphie's eyes are green and large (like mine! ^_^), even the 'walk clumsily' part (remember the first FMV you see Selphie in? ^_^).

And on the surface skim thing, it's like how people stereotype Aeris as being a Damsel in Distress who can't do anything by herself, stereotyping Tifa as being bubbly and cheerful all the time, stereotyping Rikku as being a dumb blonde (maybe in X-2, but still), stereotyping Yuna as emotionally weak, you get the point...I think just about every FF female is a victim of this surface skimming. :sad:

...Square's actually partly responsible. Why do they have to create such similar incarnations in every Final Fantasy of theirs? :lol:

True, but I like the stereotypes the way they are I have to admit, 'cause what if an FF came out without the spunky girl? Or if it came out without a more mature lady? Or if there was no determined heroine? :sad:

Random side-note: Why do you hate Rinoa, btw? ^_^ She's one of the few characters that got on my nerves sometimes, but I don't hate her.

I don't hate her, I just dislike her. I understand very well why others would like her but so many things about her personality just irked me. But I'm not one of those sillies who dislike her for things like "OMFG, she sux in battle" or "shes a hor!" or (most ridiculous one of all) "She's ugly!". And I still acknowledge that she and Squall loved each other.:P

Anyways, even the stereotypes have characteristics that define them. There are aspects about Selphie's personality that differentiate her from Rikku, stuff about Quisty that differentiate her from Tifa etc. You just have to look deeper
