Title: If Cloud's The Wolf....
Description: then what's Aerith?

Drake Clawfang - June 25, 2008 12:23 AM (GMT)
Hm, Aerith is starting to catch on with me. :P

Anyway, in Advent Children and many of his appearances afterwards, Cloud is shown to be associated with the wolf - besides the obvious "lone wolf" idea, there's the wolf that follows him in the film, his wolf badge or whatever you'd call it, and his motorcycle (and KH2 keychain) is called "Fenrir" after the Norse wolf that was destined to devour Odin, ruler of the gods.

So, if Cloud is represented by the wolf, what should Aerith be?

PinkWhiteLove - June 25, 2008 12:37 AM (GMT)
Are we talking about spirit animals here? Since the wolf is a representation of Cloud's guilt, and since the animal fits Cloud's personality.

I could say she is like the crane, but that would be for my geeky reasons.

So, let me think. What animal could represent Aerith? I always thought some kind of bird could be able to do her justice, but I'll try thinking of some other things, too. Maybe I could try and make a list.

Hmmm...

1. Dove
2. Stallion
3. Dolphin
4. Doe (female deer)

That's all I have for now. This is an interesting topic and one that I've never thought about before. Good job!

A dove, eh? That would certainly be interested.

A dolphin...thank you for the mental image of a dolphin with brown hair and a pink ribbon jumping throught the water, that has made my day. :D

PinkWhiteLove - June 25, 2008 12:46 AM (GMT)
Hehe, well, Aerith reminds me of some type of bird, but a graceful one. And the dolphin, I've been spending a lot of time around dolphins lately and I think they're quite beautiful creatures.

Vixie - June 25, 2008 12:55 AM (GMT)
Aerith (hey it is kinda catchy lol) could be a swan I suppose. Beautiful and graceful. There's also that thing about them pairing for life :cleris: A dolphin is the best suggestion though, as water signifies Aerith's presence. I've never thought of a spirit animal for Aerith before I must say.

Yes! A swan, why didn't I think of that? :headbang: Well, don't I feel dumb?

I would recommend a lamb, myself.

It has semireligious imagery, with the 'lamb that was slain'...

Interesting choice, also given the fairy-tale connections between wolves and sheep.

PinkWhiteLove - June 25, 2008 01:16 AM (GMT)
That's a nice thought for Aerith: a lamb. Just as long as Cloud's wolf doesn't decide to eat it, I really enjoy that idea of a lamb representing Aerith.

Agreed. So if Cloud were to crossdress again, would that make him "a wolf in sheep's clothing"?

PinkWhiteLove - June 25, 2008 01:30 AM (GMT)
Lol! In that case, a lamb it is!

"A wolf in sheep's clothing..." *dirty image* That's just plain comic relief right there. Therefore, Aerith is a lamb!

Anastar - June 27, 2008 03:27 PM (GMT)
SE already represents Aerith with flowers, rather than an animal - the flowers in her church, selling flowers, the flower field, the bouquet of flowers on Cloud's desk at the end of the movie, etc.

However, if we have to pick an animal, I like the idea of Aerith being represented by a dove. To me, doves suggest freedom, peace, beauty, purity, and happiness... all of which remind me of Aerith. Since birds fly with the wind, it also reminds me of the corner of Aerith's ribbon going with Cloud overhead during Calling.

True, Alex... yet, I associate Aerith with life moreso than with death.

:o Omgosh, you guys are all so creative! I never really thought of what kind of animal Aerith could symbolize, but everyone's made really great suggestions! I would, however, like to know your reasons for the crane, PinkWhiteLove, as the mention of that one stood out to me. ^_^

I can't point out an exact kind, but I definately think some type of bird would represent Aerith the best. :D

Cranes are quite graceful creatures and they are almost always looking to the sky. In many cultures the crane also represents life and in folk tales the crane is able to shape-shift into many different creatures, including young ladies who fall in love with a troubled young man. Also, when they are courting that "dance." Cranes are also fond of the company of others or sociable. They form large flocks where their numbers are sufficient. Many species of the crane are threatened or endangered. However the Whooping Crane of North America inspires the US legislation to protect endangered species.

But the myth is what relates to Aerith, I think.

QUOTE
The cranes' beauty and their spectacular mating dances have made them highly symbolic birds in many cultures with records dating back to ancient times. Crane mythology is widely spread and can be found in areas such as the Aegean, South Arabia, China, Korea, Japan and in the Native American cultures of North America. In northern Hokkaidō, the women of the Ainu people, whose culture is more Siberian than Japanese, performed a crane dance that was captured in 1908 in a photograph by Arnold Genthe. In Korea, a crane dance has been performed in the courtyard of the Tongdosa Temple since the Silla Dynasty (646 CE).

However, the real reason why the crane popped into my head was for yet another geek reason aside from the mythical stories.

"Kimberly, you are agile and graceful. You are the crane." -Dulcea, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Movie. Kimberly just reminds me so much Aerith. :geek:

:o ....she was my favorite....

*cough* But I think the crane would be an excellent choice for Aerith based on those cultural beliefs. ^_^ Nice pick!

Drake Clawfang - June 27, 2008 11:28 PM (GMT)
Hm...here's a thought. In the same vein of animal reps, what would Sephiroth and Tifa be?

And please, no one say "angel" for Sephiroth.

For Sephy, I'd say a black panther - graceful, powerful and beautiful but undeniably deadly if you piss it off. Plus it's a feline, a perfect juxtaposition to Cloud as the wolf.

Tifa...hm, not sure.

Kim still is my favorite. *holds head down in shame*

As for Tifa and Sephiroth...

Sephiroth, I think, reminds me of a tiger or leapord. Any kind of wild, jungle cat would work. Maybe even a mountain lion.

Tifa is a bit tougher to read. Maybe a canary (in a cage: Lockhart) or a sea lion.

Vixie - June 29, 2008 08:01 PM (GMT)
An angel for Sephiroth? Pffft, nobody would seriously suggest that! He is totally feline. The way he toyed with Cloud in that sadistic manner is the epitome of "cat and mouse"

Tifa? A Sea Lion?! explain?
I would have to say a little puppy dog for Tifa. The way they follow you around adoringly even when you don't treat them nicely. Mirrors Tifa's behaviour with Cloud in FFVII!

Angelalex242 - June 29, 2008 08:12 PM (GMT)
On the Lamb:
The lamb that was slain represents a WHOLE lot more then just death. It implies the Savior of the World (Holy+Lifestream) among other things. Miracles (Curing Geostigma), and other such benevolent deeds on a macro scale. Also triumphing over death, in an odd sort of way.

On Tifa:
I'll agree with puppy

On Sephiroth:
We'll use Keats to find the opposite of the Lamb. The Tiger.

Well, I think Tifa is adorable in a puppy sort of way, but I didn't want to come out and say it, since that is really the obvious answer. And you know sea lions are cute, like a dog. So I say, sea lion!

Yeah, Sephiroth is totally a cat. Since, Cloud's animal is a species of dog, it's more than likely that Sephiroth would have to be a cat, because dogs and cats hate each other.

Vixie - June 30, 2008 01:29 AM (GMT)
LOL now I can't get the image of Tifa balancing a ball on her nose while making "arf" noises out of my mind! :lmao:

PinkWhiteLove - June 30, 2008 03:04 AM (GMT)
:lmao: Yeah, okay, that is sort of funny, but I truly think it could an animal that fits Tifa's personality as well as a cute, itty, bitty puppy. They're cute and most of them are trainable. Some sea lions, I think, group together and form "families," which could summarize most of Avalanche, but family was very important to Tifa in Case of Tifa and Advent Children.
