Title: Final Fantasy 9
Description: Pyntie-Hets!
Hyper-Ballad - February 18, 2005 07:16 PM (GMT)
A thread for all FFIX fans...talk, discuss, worship! ^_^
This is another all-time favourite of mine as well. I feel it's a little under-rated though, because I hear the fandom making much more of a fuss about games like VII, VIII and X these days. Poor little IX is left out. It's unfair; especially as it's such a great game! :(
It's an amazing game, and I loved everything about it. Especially the characters. I love them all! Oh, I could rant for ages about how great the characters are... I love the Active Time Events, and how it gives you a look into the thoughts of all the characters; from main characters, to minor characters, to random townspeople. You really get to know everyone very well, and I cared about everyone. Especially Vivi. And you get to see them all (especially Garnet) act independantly of Zidane, which is great, because (especially in the later games) there's a bit of a tendency for everything to revolve around the hero, so getting to see the other characters do their thing was a real treat. ^_^
And I adored the Zidane/Garnet romance. Such a lovely relationship...these two are definitely my favourite canon couple...
UsagiMamoru - February 19, 2005 07:23 PM (GMT)
I loved Final Fantasy IX. Garnet is my favorite character. Dagger is my favorite character. Garnet is my favorite character. Yes! I'm in a very cheerful mood right now and I feel very good! Zidane/Garnet are a great couple. I loved all the castles and towns. The storyline was so great. FFIX was wonderful.
FF_Goddess - February 19, 2005 07:32 PM (GMT)
I agree! FFIX was fantastic! ^_^ And did you guys know that the musical score for FFIX is Nobuo Uematsu's favorite? :D

I'm not surprised. It was a fantastic score!
But I loved everything about the game (hmm...except Necron, maybe); the characters, the locations, the monsters... I loved the decision to take Final Fantasy back to the old-school style, and all the locations were gorgeously designed. And I found the storyline to be incredibely powerful and moving, too. The game was a total joy to play!
Onigiri - February 20, 2005 04:18 AM (GMT)
Tetra master is the best! I was so hooked on that. I didn't really like Zidane though...never liked the flirtateous type characters...and the ending with Necron...that really came out of no where...and it's what explained the logo too. o_O
Bloodbath - March 22, 2005 08:52 AM (GMT)
Tetra master was fun... but I didn't like it as much. I didn't want to lose any rare cards. :P It was unique though, but reminded me of the card game in FFVIII (what was the name of that game again? )
And... what did the logo look like again...?
Orihime - April 30, 2005 08:40 PM (GMT)
I just finished this game. (I'm pretty new with FF-games, so...) I agree that IX is a little bit unrated, and I can't understand it. Personally I liked it better than X, because the characters of X didn't intrest me that much as those of IX. I loved the places, characters, music, everything, and Zidane/Garnet was my OTP ever since the beginning.
Zidane also became my favourite FF-hero with Cloud. I don't know why, I just loved his more talkative attitude. Vivi was simply sweet, Beatrix awesome chick, Kuja was pretty cool, and other characters were also great. Garnet, for some reason, got on my nerves at times, but it's not that I would've hated her either.
Really fantastic game. It should get more attention!
Buhon - April 30, 2005 10:39 PM (GMT)
Aha! Excellent...
Though not nearly as "deep" a storyline as, say, VII or X, IX was a great game. I enjoyed the characters (Steiner was a favorite... Zidane, Vivi, and Freya were all close seconds). The supporting characters were great as well, like the Black Mages and those Gremlins/Goblins with the bizzare Scottish brogue ("Pyntie het"). It also had well-done graphics and visuals (esp. for PS1) and an excellent soundtrack (why am I not surprised that it's Uematsu's favorite?). I thought the "old school" flavor was a great idea, and IX was a refreshing departure from the darker storylines from VII and VIII. Overall, a very enjoyable game, and it's a total trajedy that it's been overlooked.
tsk tsk
shadowedpuppet - May 30, 2005 12:26 AM (GMT)
My sister plays FF9 all the time. She will go on and on about Vivi. He's her fave. I found it really sad (not in a bad way) when Vivi didn't know about his past or anyhting. When the black mages would "stop moving" he got so confused. Isis nearly cried. lol. I kinda laughed at her for it.
Kaldea - June 6, 2005 04:58 AM (GMT)
Vivi rules. That is all I shall say. ^_^
Yukari - June 7, 2005 10:16 AM (GMT)
Yep, he does. Bless his heart. FFIX is awesome, I really enjoyed how it was back to old-school FF what with the ways abilities were learned and the Eidolons. Also, took me right back to FFVI when Ramuh appeared to test Garnet before he'd join her. In the other games, only the strongest summon monsters that you had to go on sidequests for actually spoke, so it was nice to see Ramuh speaking.
Zidane was a breath of fresh air as a hero, I thought. Mind you, the fact that he followed on from Squall probably has something to do with that opinion. It was just really nice to see a hero that could express himself, and the love story was handled much better than that of FFVIII. Zidane and Garnet's feelings for each other were developed slowly and believably over the course of the game, and there was no question that Zidane cared for her, and she loved him.
Beatrix was teh roxor. Steiner could be kind of annoying but I could tolerate him, and I loved the letter scene. Freya and Fratley's story was really moving, I felt so sorry for her, but at the same time, admired her. Kuja had an... interesting sense of fashion but I thought he was a really stylish villain. I think the scene at the end of Disk Two where Brahne dies was handled extemely well too. And do I really need to mention the awesomeness of the soundtrack? ^_^
The one thing I didn't like in IX was the limit break, Trance. I hated that I couldn't save it for bosses and it could be wasted on some random battle against a bite bug or something. I suppose it did make the game more challenging, but still, I found it annoying.
Alan Bates - July 3, 2005 04:12 AM (GMT)
I found this to be an excellent throwback to the old style of Final fantasy games. It certainly seemed a lot more like the SNES games than the Playstation ones.
The only reall problems I had where some of the character designs, Necron, and how Amarant and Freya's stories just seem to stop once they join your team.
Still, it's great work and the characters and much better than either FFX or FF8.
Schala - July 4, 2005 03:58 AM (GMT)
FF9 was the first FF game that I got hooked on. In my book, it was a great game (I mean, moogles as save points?). I was really quite sad when Kingdom Hearts came out and there wasn't a trace of an FF9 character. It seems like there's a void between VIII and X... FF9 doesn't deserve to be ignored.
The adventure element was really good, and although Dagger seemed a bit dull at first, I grew to like her. Zidane, I always favored (a hero who didn't let his memory and lousy background keep him down!), his flirting was strangely charming. I even like Kuja! Sure, he looks like a girl and has bad taste in clothes, but he's still got style. Nice silver dragon! I could really sympathize with him too, later on in the story.
Anyway, maybe I just enjoyed it because I have a thing for the sort of tale where bandit saves the princess and they fall in love. Well, except for this one time when I was stuck with no MP restoring items and an MP-less Dagger, Eiko, and Vivi... Finally I had Zidane do Sacrifice, but it was not a good feeling. Yeah, if there's one thing I have to complain about FF9, it's the battle system. A bit tedious since four characters can become quite a burden. Some enemies take forever to kill!
Still, all said and done, the storyline was wonderful! The places had a quaint sort of personality too. I loved hanging out in Alexandria and Limblum just talking to the people. It's like a more detailed and complicated fairy-tale! I thought FF9 was really well done and I still can't understand why it's given so little credit! Maybe because it was so conclusive? (though not really, they never did explain too much about HOW things happened... *Trying hard not to make a spoiler*)
Kaldea - July 4, 2005 04:33 AM (GMT)
There were no FFIX characters in KH because Tetsuya didn't design them. He only used characters he designed in that game.
Vivi should be in more games. He's in Itadaki Street Special but that doesn't count until it comes out where I live!
Alan Bates - July 4, 2005 04:49 AM (GMT)
I read in an intreview somewhere that Tetsuya said he didn't feel comfortable using them in the first Kingdom Hearts, but has changed his views since then. So we might see some FF9 cahracters in the next KH.

I see :) That's nice. Silly me, I should've realized that Nomura-san didn't do FF9 character designs! Never pays attention to credits... Anyway, I think that Zidane and crew would fit in quite nicely with the KH style. Now, if only Kuja could be in KH2! I doubt it though. But at least Zidane should be there. Or Vivi!
UsagiMamoru - July 20, 2005 04:44 PM (GMT)
I beat FFIX about four years ago. I love replaying FFIX and beating it again. I even made a movie with each scene. I've replayed FFIX many times. Princess Garnet is my favorite character. Dagger is my favorite character. Since Garnet is my favorite character, whenever I replay it and do the part in disc two with the timer, I always save Garnet very fast. You know, the part in the castle where you have 30 minutes? I always save her in five minutes, because Garnet is my favorite character. I've played every Final Fantasy and love them all. I was wondering, has anyone ever not made it on time? I always make sure to get there in five minutes, so I never let the time go past 30 minutes, but I hoped that it didn't show the death scene if you didn't make it. I beat the game many times and always did things before the timer ran out, but did anyone ever find out what happened if the timer did run out? I feel so nervous thinking about what could have happened. I love FFIX's ending. My favorite scene is on disc three, when Garnet hugs Zidane. I loved all four discs. Dagger rules.

*Revives*
Ah! FFIX, the under appreciated FF! I love this game to bits, going back to the old skool and fantasy style because we all knew that VIII was indeed very far from "Fantasy".
The characters were brilliant and explored very well. Zidane was a brilliant introduction to a different kind of male character (Don't know bout you guys but I didn't want another cold/loner/angst lead) and he was so hawt! :lust: There's also the cutie pie Vivi, the annoying but funny Steiner and so much more.
The storyline was also something new with the fantasy term but also because it wasn't as dark as VII and VIII. Though Necron was just weird  But the storyline is still very enjoyable and lovable, especially the Zidane/Garnet relationship.
Uematsu provides probably his best soundtrack that he's ever done in my opinion. There are so much memorable songs from this one ^_^
I had to revive this from just starting IX again for the 4th or 5th time yesterday :D

I totally agree! I can safely say that he's a big part of the reason I like FF9 (and Kuja too)! And the great thing is there isn't a character I dislike (except Eiko, sometimes) So maybe Zidane and Dagger's relationship was a tad cliched, but I still enjoyed every moment of it!
Inuyatta - April 2, 2006 11:36 PM (GMT)
I loved FFIX. My first RPG ever--and yes, Dagger was my girl. She was also my first cosplay ever. XD I had read about 7 and 8, and found I was reluctant to play them because the main characters were always so cold, distant and angsty. Please, I'll take Zidane any day. Zidane was angsty for like maybe...30 minutes of the game. He wins. XD The characters and the story were well thought out and I adored Eiko for being so spunky and pulling Vivi out of his shell a little more. Hell, Beatrix was just AWESOME. X__x
Even the side characters were great--Tantalus, anyone? Queen Hildegard? Ruby? The traveling moogle? The newlywed moogles? Mog? Master Quale? XD
OMG, the fact that Zidane and Dagger had to get married before moving through a town was hilarious (as was Quina and Vivi's marriage before...lol wtf)!
And yes. FF9 ftw...because true evil wears a THONG. :lmao:

I take about 20 minutes, cause I fight all of the Alexandrian soldiers and I have to steal the Stardust Rod off Thorn.

Oh yais, he is true evil because how the hell he could hide his tail with that tiny thong is anyone's guess.

I am tired of the anti-FFIX-ness lately. <_< No FFIX characters in KH and then, the only one to make it into KH2 is Vivi. I wanna see Zidane and Garnet! I don't remember seeing any FFIX characters in ISS either.

Vivi appears in ISS! :woot:
FF_Goddess - April 5, 2006 04:05 PM (GMT)
Really? I must have never seen him... *Looks it up* Oh, he is nearly hidden by the logo! ^_^
No offense to Vivi fans, but why is he making appearances instead of the main characters??? Personally, I would rather see Zidane, Garnet, and Kuja.
Lynn - April 5, 2006 04:05 PM (GMT)
I believe Vivi managed to make it into ISS. Seems like he keeps beating the main characters in any cameos. ^^;

I LOVE STILTZKIN. Heck, the Moogles mini-game was one of the aspects I loved most about FFIX. They played barely any role in FFVII and FFVIII, and having not played the older games before that, it was such a pleasant little mini-game to be immersed in.
I also adore Beatrix and Steiner. Wasn't too pumped over Amarant and Freya, but it could just be because I hadn't gotten far enough in the game when the CDs died on me.
*needs to get a replacement~*

Because Vivi roxxors teh boxxors.
I'm guessing it's a popularity issue. I think that was a reason cited for his appearance in KH2. From what I've seen, Zidane just isn't as popular as his other FF hero counterparts, and it looks like Nomura really needs a character that is not his creation to be very popular before putting them in.

Beatrix kicks ass! She's one of my favourite FF females ever! I mean, she beautiful, she kicks ass, she's got white magic and her swords kills can kill you quickly.

*Loves Zidane* He's my fave FF male character. I suppose its maybe beause we were that used to angst/cold/loner leads like Cloud and Squall
Vivi is clearly the most popular IX character, he even beaten Cloud in the most popular FF character from the Official Playstation Magazine in the UK about 4 years ago.
I understand that, but Setzer from FFVI isn't very popular, the three most popular characters from VI are Terra, Locke and Celes.

<3 I adore Final Fantasy 1X. My favourite FF besides V11. I think this game is poorly under-rated, I think it really brings out the 'fantasy' in the Final Fantasy games, unliked games like FFV111.
The characters, in my opinion, kicked ASS! :D They were so fantasy like and cute and pervey (Well zidane is :P )!!
Oh and how could I forget those adorable little moogles!? KUPO! They are so cute! I want them alllllllllllllll!!!
The story line was simple to follow, and easy to understand :fangirl: Which is good.
Pyra Kurai Akaidra - April 11, 2006 11:02 AM (GMT)
FF9 is my first ever FF game! I still love it now, heck, even FF7 and FF8 is having trouble fighting for the gaming nostalgia list in my mental list!
Zidane is funny, Garnet is unique in her own way (seriously, a princess want to be kidnapped?), Vivi is my strongest character in my team! Steiner's funny and awkward, Freya's cool and save my butt with her MP-recovering technique, and Quina save my butts too when I can't use Garnet.(Thank you, White Wind!) Amarant's okay, but I don't use him too much.
Kuja's looks fooled me to think he's a girl until I find out his gender. :o
I love the mini-games, fuuuun~! Heck, I always try to deliver all the mails for the Moogles. I love the little guys and their bopping ping pong. :P

It is so great to see so much love for FFIX!!! I am actually playing it again right now and having alot of fun. I agree with all of you that it is underrated, underappreciated and should be talked about more. This game will always hold a special place in my heart because thought FFVII was the first RPG game I ever played, FFIX was the first one I beat all by myself including the final boss. I always had my husband help me because I was afraid to die  sounds silly now I know but I had to get use to the idea that you can always start again.
And just for the record....I adore Vivi, he is just awesome and if he was real I would want to pick him up and hug him! Simply adorable!!! :fangirl: Also Zidane was a breath of fresh air to me too, I really liked him in the hero role.
Imaginary__girl - July 5, 2006 05:18 PM (GMT)
I absolutley love FFIX. It was my first FF, and my first RPG game. I got when I was 9 years old. I even embarrased my cousin with it, because he was 16 and a 9 year old beat him in a FF game. I still remind him of that today...and he's 22 now. He gets annoyed. XD No but seriously, its one of my favorite FF's. I just loved the story line! And the characters were just too cute! (Vivi being the favorite also, aerisbolt!) And Zidane and Garnet's relationship was just too cute! Writing about it makes me want to play it right now...and I think I will. XD
Azerty - July 14, 2006 09:05 PM (GMT)
I love this game with a passion. It's a reason why I made a Final Fantasy IX fansite called Sacred Waltz (as seen in my sig). Even though a Final Fantasy VIII demo was my first FF/RPG game, Final Fantasy IX was the first Final Fantasy game I picked up. I didn't understand much about FF back then, but now...I'm so glad I've discovered this game.
Asuka - July 21, 2006 08:06 AM (GMT)
FF9 was the first game I ever played! we'll sorta...I hired it you see...and It decided to stuff up just as Zidane & that guy were sneaking into the palace to kidnap Garnet.
The cutest couple...While Zidane & Dagger/Garnet were cute you just gonna love Quina and Vivi XD funniest couple ever.
Oh! you gotta love Brahne she's got that whole elephant penguin thing going on waddle waddle :P
