Title: Fruits Basket
Description: ...The most adorable manga EVAH.

Yukari - February 13, 2005 12:23 AM (GMT)
Seriously, this manga has to be the cutest I've ever read, and is one of the only series' where I can safely say I love each and every character. When I first heard about it, I thought it sounded ridiculous (The Sohmas turn into animals when hugged by members of the opposite sex?) but I gave it a try - and I'm so glad I did. A manga I expected to be gimmicky, held up by a flimsy storyline, and immature, turned out to be an absorbing read with well rounded characters each with their own set of flaws, and a story that can be both amusing and heartbreaking, and do it well.

I admire Tohru a great deal - sometimes I wish I could see the world the way she does. I like how Yuki appears perfect at first, but he's insecure deep down. I like how Kyo has the tendency to lose his temper and say things he doesn't mean - and how meeting Tohru changed him. The chapter handling Hatori's past was extremely moving, as was the one dealing with Momiji and his mother. And more recently, the chapter involving Kyo's true form was fantastically done. (Plus, there was Kyo x Tohru fluff, so I was a happy kitty.)

As I said, I love all the characters, but my favourites have to be the Trio. (Hatori, Shigure and Ayame) Any scenes with these guys in, I'm grinning like a fool. Although I love Shigure, I'm suspicious of him. The manga still hasn't revealed what he and Akito are planning, and if Hatori doesn't agree with it enough that he mentioned that he doesn't to Shigure, then it's got to be something serious.

Aaaaanyway, are there any other Furuba fans around? I can't be the only one on this board, surely. ;)

i totally love fruits basket
*i like yuki_tohru/kyo_tohru* :)
too bad it had to end. :(
and just when it was getting good(i wanted to see more episodes)

Yukari - February 13, 2005 01:29 AM (GMT)
Squee, another fan! I knew it wasn't possible that there were no others here.

I like Yuki x Tohru too, even though Kyo x Tohru is my favourite. I think it was the cute scene after he changes back from his true form (and the moment at the end of volume 4) that made me prefer K x T. I like Yuki x Haru as well. :D

I know, I was disappointed when I'd finished the fourth dvd and I realised there were no more anime eps. The voice actors were chosen so well - Laura Bailey was perfect as Tohru. The manga's still going strong though, I think it's up to about volume 17 in Japan, and volume 7's just been released by Tokyopop. And it has Hatori on the cover, therefore I must buy it. ;)

lenne - February 13, 2005 01:41 AM (GMT)
allright!!!!!! more fruits basket for the manga
im soo happy i really need to start buying the manga books im sooo behind i need to catch up

Onigiri - February 13, 2005 02:43 AM (GMT)
Where the manga is now, the love triangle between Tohru, Kyo and Yuki has pretty much 'disapear', as it's kind of clear who will be with who. But I won't spoil it and I'm pretty sure you don't want it spoiled =P

Yukari - February 13, 2005 03:45 AM (GMT)
Do you mean where the manga is in Japan, Onigiri? Since I can't read Japanese, I've only got up to volume six (Tokyopop aren't releasing it quickly enough T_T) and after what happened with Kyo's true form and what Kyo said to Tohru ("You don't have to love everything"), I get the impression that it's moving more towards a Kyo/Tohru romance, but I could be wrong. Takaya-sensei has been known to spring unexpected plot twists on the fans. *cough*Akito*cough*

But I'll refrain from begging for spoilers, heh. The last time I did that, it was Peach Girl, and I shouldn't have as there was no suspense any more. (Not that I wasn't happy with who Momo ended up with, but I think I'd have been happier if I'd have read volume 10 of CoH not knowing what was going to happen.)

lenne - February 13, 2005 03:57 AM (GMT)
i dont know but what ever it is i hope its cool
i cant wait to read the rest of the volumes :P

Peach-ie Mint - February 13, 2005 04:17 AM (GMT)
i simply luv both da anime and manga furuba. i finished da anime quite sum time ago but i remember clearly dat i cried towards da ending *cough cough*. i have all 6 volumes of da manga so far and since volume 7 is coming out this month, im definitely gonna get it. mai favorite character would have to be sweet kisa and the hot tempered hatsuharu. tee hee XP

p.s: i luv the furuba soundtrack. ritsuko okazaki is one of the best anime ballad singers ever =^^=

Yukari - February 14, 2005 02:36 AM (GMT)
I cried at some parts of the anime too, Mint! ^^;; Specifically, at Hatori and Kana's story, and in the episode where Kyo transformed and Tohru ended up at her mother's grave, crying. It really made me sad, because Tohru's usually so cheerful and smiley.

Kisa is indeed a sweetie. I thought her story was really sad too, when she stopped speaking. And Haru cracks me up, especially when he turns into "Black Haru" and goes insane. I couldn't stop snickering in the episode where he proved to the Student Body President that his hair colour was natural. ;) And then Tohru had no idea how he'd done it.

I haven't got the soundtrack, though. I'll have to look into getting a hold of it, because I love the cute opening and ending themes.

Seii Monogatari - February 14, 2005 03:31 AM (GMT)
I love Furuba!!!

I own volume four, but have sneakily read up to volume seven by mooching off of my local B&N ... (That's how I do most of my reading!)

I love Haru, Kyo, Yuki, Tohru, Uo-chan, Kisa, Shigure, Ayame, Hatori, ... um, I love ALL of the chars! :D

I like Yuki-Tohru, but I like Kyo-Tohru even better. Actually, there are many, many possible pairings that I like. Hm.

and about the sad scenes, i think dats wut makes me luv furuba even more. the mixture of drama, love and comedy makes it interesting. i wonder if natsuki takaya is gonna make a sequel for it... :)

Onigiri - February 14, 2005 09:32 PM (GMT)
Yah, where the manga is in Japan now I meant xD
I remember crying often in furuba ;__; But for some reason I can't stand Ayame o_O...he's too...weiird for me.

Evenstar - February 15, 2005 09:07 AM (GMT)
Hmm, Fruits Basket... My friend has been recommending me that anime for a long time and judging from what I've seen in the net, apparently it's worth the watch.

One thing, my friend says the guys turn into animals based on the Chinese zodiac when they get hugged by the opposite sex right? How come one of them turns into a cat when theres no such thing (as far as I know) as the Year of the Cat?

Enlighten me please... :D

The anime is great, but it only runs for 26 eps, and since the manga is still unfinished, there's no real sense of closure at the end of the anime, and a lot of unanswered questions. But the manga is still around to answer them!

The basic plot is that the Sohma family are possessed by the spirits of the animals of the Chinese Zodiac, and when they're hugged by a member of the opposite sex, or their bodies are weak, they turn into their Zodiac animal.

The story goes that God invited thirteen animals to a banquet (the zodiac animals and the cat) to decide which animal would represent which year. The rat told the cat that the banquet was in two days' time, when it was actually the next day, so he missed it and wasn't included in the zodiac. Kyo Sohma was born possessed by the cat's vengeful spirit, and hates Yuki Sohma (the Rat) with a passion. Because he's the Cat, he's an outcast in the Sohma family. He's desperate to beat Yuki in a fight and earn himself a place in the Sohma family (the Zodiac).

Tohru, a girl who lives in a tent on Sohma land, finds out their secret, and that's where the story gets going.

I'd say to give the manga a go, Evenstar, it's fab. ;)

Evenstar - February 16, 2005 04:52 AM (GMT)
Thanks, Madame Batolli . I'll try to read the manga..... if I could find it in this darned country XD.

Nya - February 18, 2005 03:38 PM (GMT)
I watched this a loooong time ago, so let's see what I can remember. My favorite characters are Shigure, Kyo and maybe Yuki. The seiyuus are awesome, Seki as Kyo, Okiayu as Shigure and Yuki's some good female seiyuu who's name I've forgotten. Well Fruits Basket is quite so random funny-ness, the characters are all so original .... the ending is actually the only weird, sad, dramatic part isn't it? As for me- I don't like Tohru much, I seem to dislike most main female anime characters. But Kagura ( i think.. the pig) is one character I cannot tolerate. I've even forgotten the crossdresser's name ... anyone know?

lenne - February 20, 2005 02:57 AM (GMT)
hmm...does anyone know who is the boy that gave tohru the hat? :P

Yukari - February 20, 2005 12:32 PM (GMT)
@Nya: I love Shigure too, he's so easy to like, even though in the manga he's got something up his sleeve. (He tells Hatori that there's something he wants, and he doesn't care who gets hurt as long as he gets it - I'm still not sure what it is he wants, but...) I loved the episode where he was winding up his editor and he'd finished the novel all along. I haven't watched my DVDs in Japanese though. I usually do, but only when the dub has terrible voice acting, which FB hasn't.

I wouldn't say that, I found Hatori and Kana's story quite sad, and the truth about Momiji's mother. But the ending three episodes were certainly the most dramatic. ;)

QUOTE

I don't mind Kagura, but I can understand you not liking her. (Is it because of how she attacks Kyo? She's kind of like Su from Love Hina, who does the same to Keitaro and irritates me to hell.)

QUOTE

Ritsu. But Ayame crossdresses occasionally too.

@flowerangel: I do. ;) I don't want to spoil it for you, but I'll give you a clue, it's not who you'd think, but it is his hat.

lenne - February 21, 2005 01:53 AM (GMT)
well i dony mind being spoiled it just makes me want to see it more for my self.
oh a clue hmmm...to tell you the truth i dont do good on solving clues
it confuses me  (in other words i cant really understand them) :P

AeRîŠ_š†rIƒE - February 22, 2005 06:23 AM (GMT)
:P Furuba roX!!! go yuki!! he soo cuuteeee!! >.<

Aprillis - March 24, 2005 08:24 AM (GMT)
Shigureeeee.... the only reason why I'm continuing the Furuba manga...

But I'm not liking the current plot concerning him, though... something about him and Akito. Not liking it at all.

Shy-Guy05 - May 5, 2005 10:35 PM (GMT)
I love fruits basket its like that best show i seen/and manga i ever read :cloud:

What what?!? Did someone mention a crossdresser?!?

Those who know me from ACF know my (not so secret) obsession. So post a picture of this person. I demand it. ^_^

Your wish is my command, Andina. :) Click here. (Sorry about the fuzziness of the pic.) Ritsu's the one sitting down.

Shy-Guy05 - May 10, 2005 11:07 PM (GMT)
nice pic :D

slowerthanaverage - May 13, 2005 03:09 PM (GMT)
To be honest, I was quite surprised when I realised Kyo is the far more popular character in the series. Yes, I love Kyo, he's rather cute and his temper is hilarious. Still, when I first came across a website on Fruit Basket, the one who caught my eyes is Yuki. He is undeniably beautiful *squeee* Those huge lovely eyes with long lashes and snow-white skin <3 <3 <3

Plus I love my bishie pretty, gentle, small-built, yet dark and powerful and the same time! xD
He's really, in my opinion, a true bishie!! :P

Andina - May 14, 2005 01:17 AM (GMT)
Thank you very much for the picture! Now I have one more bishie to dream of.

Oddishness - June 2, 2005 12:23 PM (GMT)
w00t! Thread reviving. I only seen a few episodes of the anime, but I ADORE the manga. My favorite character is Ayame (how could you not like him, Onigiri?) closely followed by Momiji (I can't believe no one's mentioned him yet), who is also a bit of a crossdresser. :P

Takaya Natsuki is hilarious. I love the Ultra Special Blah Blah Blahs, especially when they're about video games. She's talks about Final Fantasy a lot, especially 8 and 7

Yukari - June 2, 2005 03:09 PM (GMT)
I love Ayame too, Oddishness! I especially loved the part where he defended the students who visited the red light district by telling them to direct their affections towards him instead. Also, when he and Shigure are flirting - "Shigure would have kept me up all night..." - cracks me up.

And Momiji, bless his heart. I felt so sorry for him in the chapter about his mother. It's really cute how he teases Kyo about Tohru. :fangirl:

Natsuki does talk about videogames a lot doesn't she? I know Yu Watase does as well, if I remember correctly she even talked about the love triangle in one of her freetalks. ^_^ I like the little strips that Natsuki draws, there's one where she talks about how she gets really nervous when a game gives her a time limit. I do that too!

Shy-Guy05 - June 2, 2005 06:36 PM (GMT)
hmmm...well me and flowerangel050(mostly flowerangel050)are saving to buy the volumes from fruits basket :P (we want to see(or should I say read) what happens(sp?)

slowerthanaverage - June 3, 2005 06:13 AM (GMT)
Oddy! You have a huge Momiji fangirl here! ^______^
Ah I love him, he is so kawaii! His story is really sad, but he's always there to cheer people up.
I love how he cry whenever Kyo "bullies" him *huggles*

Oddishness - June 3, 2005 11:47 AM (GMT)
I know! Momiji is so cute. ^_^ I love Momiji's song that he sings...

Another part that made me crack up was when Ayame was teasing Hatori over the phone about thinking of Tohru in a dress, and Hatori had the phone about a foot away from his ear because Ayame was talking so loudly!

I thought it was so sweet when Natsuki said that she still cried every time she heard "Aerith's Theme".

Lockheart - November 22, 2005 07:52 PM (GMT)
oh yeah! the momiji song! teru teru momiji haha! i love that song! and Fruits Basket is one of my favorite animes EVER!!! i have all the DVDs and umm.... im just wondering but... is there a difference between the manga and the anime? like... the manga doesnt end yet or something?

p.s. Kisa is my favorite~<3

mallorn - November 23, 2005 09:13 AM (GMT)
I used to be ADDICTED to Furuba, but licensing and lack of money and time have kept me at bay for a while. :D I used to be a Kyoru fan, now I'm YukixMachi with a bit of Yukiru. This must be the only manga which I follow regularly but whose heroine I don't care for that much...

*hides from angry Tohru fans*

lenne - November 24, 2005 06:40 AM (GMT)
haha right now im not buying any manga of fruits basket (or another for the matter) Im a-litle short on money right now :P
BUT im reading them in a site that has volumes on so im trying to catch up right now :P

Pyra Kurai Akaidra - November 24, 2005 09:19 AM (GMT)
Right now, I have volume 10 of Furuba (*worships EB Games*) and already watch all 26 episodes of the anime.("WTF? ONLY 26 EPISODES?!") As you can guess, I love the series. :fangirl:

As some of you know, I'm a Kyoru fan, but also like a bit of Yukiru. I just ADORE all Kyoru scenes! :fangirl:

One of my favourite scenes, beside Kyoru, is when Ayame tell a story of when he's student president and his suggestion to the school council!! :lmao: If you laugh out loud at that scene, laugh along with me!! :lmao:

Though the anime series IS short...damn, we wouldn't able to see Kureno animated.

And I also love the Yuki x Machi pairing too! :fangirl: :fangirl:

Edit: Mine and Ayame too! :fangirl:

KyoxTohru is my favorite couple along with Haru-sanxMe . :fangirl: And I used to like YukixTohru until I got more into the manga/story. ^_^

Ahhhhh. I wanna see Rin animated. She's cool. ^_^ She's my favorite character. Aside from Kyo and Haru. :)
