Title: Cloud &aeris:destined To Be Star Crossed Lovers?
Angelwing Aeris - September 29, 2007 01:04 AM (GMT)
I was replaying the FF7 Clorith date and my mom (who has never played FF7 or seen Aeris's death) said something that was very significant. She looked at them first she said they like each other alot (love is not said in Asian countries directly). Then she looked Cloud, shook her head and said "He has had and is going to have a hard life. His hair is too spiky." (My mom is Chinese and knows some superstitions. Spiky hair is considered bad luck in China). Then she said "Aeris has a bad fate and a hard life because of her chin is too pointed." (Pointed chins are considered a symbol of a hard life). Even my mom could tell Aeris's death was close but she said "They will never be apart because they are a perfect fit since they are opposites (yin and yang)." Is that interesting or what?

*jaw drop*
Wait, your mom predicted her death? COOL.
LAWL at Cloud's spiky hair, though. I know about the pointed chin (though all the girls have around the same head shape in their FFVII artwork), but I had no idea spiky hair would mean a hard life.

I'm sorry but FF7 was made in Japan only Japonaiz symborism counts. :(
Angelwing Aeris - September 29, 2007 04:02 AM (GMT)
True, but Japanese have adopted alot of Chinese symbolism so basically Japanese and Chinese symbolism is very similar. Plus my mom also speaks Japanese and knows about the culture, since she's lived Japan and studied their culture.
Here's an example of similar symbolism: In China and Japan relationships are indirect. You're not going to hear "I love you" very often or perhaps ever. Also Japanese have adopted yin and yang, Buddhism, also not overtly expressing your emotions, reverence for the family...etc.
Zelda - September 29, 2007 04:16 AM (GMT)
Of course. Who am I to discredit your mother and her obviously well researched chin symbolism? I'm just an ignorant American, forgiveness plz.

If it was such bad luck, why do a large percentage of Chinese/Japanese boys have spiky hair? o:
I'm quite fascinated by that spiky chin one though--I never knew that~ ^_^
Angelwing Aeris - September 29, 2007 06:32 AM (GMT)
I don't know about a large % of Chinese/Japanese boys having spiky hair. That wasn't true until the younger generations. My mom has told me that it is a traditional saying. (That doesn't mean times haven't changed). The pointy chin is a symbol of a hard life and spiky hair has meant bad luck, although change brings new ideas.
Anyway, isn't it interesting that my mom could tell Cloud and Aeris's fates from two sayings? I'm still in awe. :D
ps. Zelda, you seem cool, and I just wanted to link some facts for you so you'd get my point. :D
Zydalia - September 29, 2007 07:00 AM (GMT)
I think that these are some pretty interesting facts, although I don't see how your mother could see Aerith's chin with the lego graphics.
Did she see it in the menu?
Very interesting points to say the least.
:gift:
Angelwing Aeris - September 29, 2007 07:22 AM (GMT)
Yeah, I showed her the menu first. Later I showed the opening video. :cleris: forever!

Only this part I used to heard from the elderly...(and I'm from Taiwan, a Chinese :D ) My mom saw me watching AC some other day, her comment is similar but funny actually:
Me: Isn't that guy handsome??(*pointing to Cloud)
My mom: Nah.....he has such a pointed chin and that girl, too. It's not so good. You should at least has a plump chin like the dark-haired girl...
Me: ...
Ahaha~ but your mom 's comment is more interesting! Always feel good to hear ppl saying Cloud and Aerith have similarities whatever it is~~ :cleris:
Zydalia - September 29, 2007 07:29 AM (GMT)
@Angelwing Aeris - Nice! Family Cleris love FTW.
@Aerithlove527 - Haha, I like those comments. I shall examine chins more closely from now on.

But that wouldn't make any sense (no offense) Final Fantasy 7 was made in Japan, not China.

They are but that wouldn't mean everything was the same, it would be like saying Greek and Romans were the same.

Well, I'm not saying that they're the same but they are both similar.
And the Greeks and Romans shared some common mythology and such.
I have no idea though. I'm no expert and truthfully know next to nothing about asian culture.
So I leave it in everyone else's capable hands :ermm:

Thats because the Romans came from a Greek general, but it involved into its own culture for example the Greek used Zeus and other names with their gods while Romans used the name of the planets . And leave things to better hands but from what final fantasy 7 is set in a western culture in Asian the only Asian area is Wutai if I'm not mistaken.
Sefie - September 29, 2007 07:44 AM (GMT)
The Greeks and Romans had similar myths because the way Romans (and many others) took over a place was to integrate their gods into the gods and myths of their victims, hence all the renamed gods. They have very DIFFERENT cultures, just similar mythology.
Furthermore, I have a very round chin. Ha.

so I guess that means you are very lucky, but wait I have a bit of a pointed chin! :ermm: oh snap I know the reasons behind my many accidents!
Angelwing Aeris - September 29, 2007 07:51 AM (GMT)
No hard life for you, Selfie then :P
yin-chan - September 29, 2007 11:32 AM (GMT)
My chin is so pointy my friends say it hurts when I rest my head on their shoulders. Chin stab!
I'm going to be waiting for my hard life. Everytime I see a white-haired dude or spiky-haired dude walk by, I'll be all "OH SNAP!" and run for cover.
Your mom is interesting, AngelwingAeris. I'm Asian and I've never heard anything about spiky hair being bad before LOL. Gonna keep the gel safely locked away from my brother now.
Resha - September 29, 2007 12:01 PM (GMT)
*touches chin* ZOMG pointy!!! *refers to her feng shui luck* :o
RuneKnight - September 29, 2007 02:54 PM (GMT)
I don't know why everyone is giving her such a hard time on the culture thing. She just wanted to share with us about how her mom was able to predict Aerith's death, and how Cloud's life was going to be hard. I for one found it interesting. Anyway, I don't think Japan is so wrapped up in itself that it only include elements of it's culture and such. :ermm:
Tacofoolio - September 29, 2007 03:24 PM (GMT)
RuneKnight, I don't see what's concerning you so much, would prefer that everyone post completely seriaz responses, and not have some fun? That just kills off additional conversation, and personally, it amuses me to think that spikey hair could be a sign of a hard life. Perhaps this generation's love for spikey hair is what's causing so much war and shizz! xD *must warn her husband, even though she likes his spikey hair*
Zelda - September 29, 2007 03:53 PM (GMT)

I didn't mean it like that D: I'm just saying I think we all know that FFVII is Japanese, not Chinese and there are cultural differences It's not something everyone needs to point out. >//<

Well. Maybe him having practically no chin will balance out his screwed hair. O:
Hmmm...I think that it's a pretty cool way to look at it, personally, but it's just a fun little thing from another similar culture, but not fact. : D Symbolism is fun, though! <3
Angelwing Aeris - September 29, 2007 06:18 PM (GMT)

Isn't FFVII more into Norse/Jewish symbology and mythology, anyhow?
