Haha, some of the entries are really amusing. And Aerith has the most under her name, for some reason.
The Staff Chick is, as her name implies, often The Chick.
Ah... Cleris proofz right there. :D

Lol, but that site contradicts itself all the time. In the FFVII section it says:
QUOTE
Cloud Strife: Protagonist. Former member of SOLDIER, or is he. Has a very large sword. In love with Aerith. Or Tifa. Or Sephiroth. Difficult to tell, really.
Aerith Gainsborough: Magic-using flower girl. Last of her kind. In love with Cloud.
Tifa Lockhart: Well endowed. Friend of Cloud. |
Why are we picking at a fansite? :lmao:

EDIT: The trope also credits Cloud and Aerith/Zack and Aerith as star crossed lovers.

No kidding. "Aerith really just has no luck with relationships."

Lol
I find it interesting that Square broke the
Betty vs Veronica cliche in that Aeris is the sweet natured Staff chick who is also the out going one who's very unique, while Tifa is the quiet demure normal girl.

Ahaha, this place is fun.
It reminds me of the Grand List of RPG cliches!!
QUOTE (BFS)
The most well-known video game example is Cloud from Final Fantasy VII. Sephiroth, the Big Bad, also carries one. In fact, Sephiroth's actually dwarfs Cloud's, no mean feat. It's interesting to note that, in both cases, the BFS is of sufficient size that nobody could reasonably carry it.
:lmao:
And "Freudian Excuse" had me laughing pretty hard too.
QUOTE
Aeris from Final Fantasy VII is probably the archetypical example. Strangely enough, she has one of the least Staff Chick-y personalities you'll ever see on a Staff Chick, being flirtatious, rather self-centered (until she grows out of it), and occasionally even manipulative and cruel, while dealing with her own innate magical abilities with nothing short of flat-out denial. She's a fundamentally good person, though, and doesn't really mean any specific harm to most of the world.
UH YEAH RUN THAT BY ME AGAIN I THINK I MISSED SOMETHING
wtf

Agreed.
I think this paragraph explains it pretty well (from Betty vs. Veronica article):
QUOTE
Occurs in Final Fantasy VII: Cloud is given a choice between the the Betty, Aerith, and the Veronica, Tifa, though this is no longer an option when Aerith joins the Lifestream. It can also be argued that Aerith, as the spunky up and at 'em last of a dying race, is the 'special' Veronica type, and the shy girl next door Tifa is a Betty type. In reality, both girls are a blend of the two archetypes.
(Emphasis mine.)
If you were to judge Aerith purely by her abilities, then she is the Staff Chick (Betty). The same goes with Tifa if you go purely by her fighting abilities, then she is the Fighter (Veronica). However, Aerith has a lot of spunk and sass, so I would say she's more than just your typical "sweet, pretty, and normal (read: kinda dull)."
While Tifa is spunky as well, she can be pretty reserved and demure when it comes to romance ("Lockhart") - as opposed to Aerith, who is more open and outgoing - few of her many qualities that caused Cloud to find himself attracted to her.
I think was what caught my eye the most:
QUOTE
Which type is presented as "better" changes with time, and country -- the Japanese usually prefer the Betty in an anime, while Americans prefer the Veronica.
So true. If Aerith is the Staff Chick ("Betty") and Tifa the Fighter ("Veronica"), this applies. In Japan, Aerith is more popular and liked - according to my Japanese friends - and Clerith seems to have the bigger fanbase. In U.S., Tifa is more liked - especially among the fanboys - and Cloti seems to have more of the preference.
I think this somewhat correlates with several polls asking what were the top favorite games of all time for the Japanese people and the American people. For the Japanese, it was RPGs. For the Americans, it was Madden football, platform fighting games (Halo, Grand Theft Auto), and the like.

I think the person meant Aerith's infamous scenes with Barret in Gold Saucer, and Tifa in the Temple of the Ancients. ^^;;
As for self-centered... I prefer the word "stubborn" instead.

That's interesting.

I honestly don't believe Aerith was ever purposely manipulative or cruel. At heart she thought she was doing the best thing for Barret and she was just trying to help. I think she felt a little bit of doubt at what happened but then even Tifa reassures her and tells her she did the right thing. Also people forget that if you talk to Aerith before riding the tram to the Gold Saucer she feels bad for Barret.
As for Tifa, it's a pre-programmed scene between Cloud, Aerith and Cait. Tifa doesn't have to be there - that's optional. Besides as I always say Aerith was entitled to ask about herself for a change. She'd spent most of the game doing good deeds for everybody which sadly most people seem to forget in favour of focusing on those two scenes for her character analysis :(
