Title: Racist Song
Description: Played over the radio in New York...

Cloud Gainsborough - January 30, 2005 05:22 AM (GMT)
Came across this at Eyes on Final Fantasy...

I got this from a mass e-mail from Nemesis Records, the recording company of one of my favourite singers, Kristine Sa. You see, it's an asian recording company, so they were especially offended by this song. I'm really appalled at the fact that people could be so insensitive. I'll post the e-mail below. I edited out some unecessary parts:

___________________________

It's not everyday that there is a need for a call to arms, but as you may have already heard, young Asians need to show that we will not tolerate being disrespected in the media.

On Friday January 21st 2005, New York Hip Hop station Hot 97 (WQHT) aired a racist and offensive skit based on the song "We Are The World" called "The Tsunami Song". In it we are referred to as "screaming chinks" being washed away by a 20 foot wave. Here are the lyrics:

------------------------------------------------------------------
There was a time, when the sun was shining bright
So I went down to the beach to catch me a tan
Then the next thing I knew, a wave 20 feet high
Came and washed your whole country away

And all at once, you can hear the screaming chinks
And no one was saved from the wave
There were Africans drowning, little Chinamen swept away
You can hear God laughing, 'Swim you bitches swim.'

[Chorus]
So now you're screwed, it's the tsunami,
You better run and kiss your ass away, go find your mommy
I just saw her float by, a tree went through her head
And now your children will be sold to child slavery
---------------------------------------------------------------------

The 2 DJs who recorded the skit, Miss Jones and Todd Lynn repeatedly played the song after callers complained about it's insensitivity and blatant racism. When another DJ on the show (Miss Info - who is Asian and comments regularly on VH1s "Best Week Ever") opposed the song, she was verbally abused on the air by both Miss Jones and Todd Lynn. Todd Lynn actually said "I'm gonna start shooting Asians". Since that broadcast, neither Miss Jones nor her staff have apologized on their own behalf (the station issued a half a$$ed statement of apology click here to read it).

You're gonna start shooting Asians huh? We can shoot too! But why resort to guns when you can hit them where it really hurts - The station's pockets. Instead of a bullet, shoot off your anger at the FCC and demand they be reprimanded and FINED for every broadcast of that skit. If the FCC gets enough complaints, it could fine them in excess of $100,000.00 (the maximum fine for indecency times the number of times they broadcasted the "Tsunami Song"). Remember the Janet Jackson "wardrobe malfunction"? The FCC acted on thousands of indecency complaints and CBS was fined half a million dollars. Howard Stern has paid a very heavy price to the FCC for his indecencies as well based on numerous complaints. A hundred thousand dollar fine would REALLY hurt a single radio station.

If you are angry about this issue, instead of talking about it and complaining amongst ourselves, vent to the FCC. Let our anger be felt as a whole and unified community. Media personalities think they can disrespect us as a race without impunity and so far, they're right. This kind of thing will continue unless we let everyone know we will not lay down and take it. We cannot allow anyone to disrespect the hundreds of thousands of people who have died in the Tsunami tragedy and we cannot allow them to disrespect us as Asians.

Here is the email address of the FCC to file your complaint (be sure to include all of the information below in your email in addition to your comments): fccinfo@fcc.gov

The broadcast in question: "The Tsunami Song"
Date aired: Morning of January 21st 2005 (multiple airings)
Station call letters: WQHT-New York (Hot 97)
Offending DJs: Miss Jones and Todd Lynn
Offending lyrics:
---------------------------------------
There was a time, when the sun was shining bright
So I went down to the beach to catch me a tan
Then the next thing I knew, a wave 20 feet high
Came and washed your whole country away

And all at once, you can hear the screaming chinks
And no one was saved from the wave
There were Africans drowning, little Chinamen swept away
You can hear God laughing, 'Swim you bitches swim.'

[Chorus]
So now you're screwed, it's the tsunami,
You better run and kiss your a$$ away, go find your mommy
I just saw her float by, a tree went through her head
And now your children will be sold to child slavery
---------------------------

Only if the FCC gets THOUSANDS of complaints will they act. This is one surefire way to show the entire media community that we are not the invisible minority to be dissed and laughed at. The time to apologize has come and gone. It is time to PAY.

Sincerely,
Minh-Dan Pham

I'm not asian, but that song is horribly racist, so I e-mailed and complained. It's easy, just copy what they say to copy and paste it into the e-mail. If you could e-mail too, it'd be very nice.

Evil, just plain evil....

Ima send that e-mail!!!!

O_O I cannot believe someone actually wrote those stupid lyrics!

I'm not Asian either but I am really offended by those lyrics. I've seen videos and pictures of children and familys affected by the Tsunami, I felt so sorry for those people, I couldn't stand to see all those people so sad. :(

And now these jerks went and... disrespected practically every living being on this freaking planet! After I send an e-mail, I'm going to tell my friends about this and hopefully they'll send e-mails as well!

Cloud Gainsborough - January 30, 2005 06:56 AM (GMT)
Very good plan, I'll do that too...

Anastar - January 30, 2005 04:04 PM (GMT)
That's really horrible. I can't believe that people can be so insensitive, especially to the victims of such a horrible tragedy. I was offended by the lyrics, too, and I'm not Asian. I'll also send a complaint to the FCC.

Real_Emotion - January 30, 2005 06:15 PM (GMT)
THAT IS SO DISRESPECTFUL!!!!!

I am Asian and I feel totally offended!
Not only do they disrespect Asians in general, but they mock the Tsunami incident. Which is just plain WRONG! The Tsunami incident was a dreadful tragedy. So many have died, lost family and friends, and lost their homes. How can a person write such insensitive and offensive lyrics?! And, what kind of radio station will allow such lyrics to be played? And, they threaten to shoot Asians? WHAT KIND OF BULLSH*T IS THAT?!

Me too. This had already been discussed in one of the other forums I belong to, and one of them posted a link to an online petition against that song:

I was told by a source today that the ones responsible for the skit and such were terminated. I'm not sure if it's the same radio station or not, but it was on a radio station in my area that reported these people being fired.

Cloud Gainsborough - January 31, 2005 05:00 AM (GMT)
We can hope...

Seii Monogatari - February 1, 2005 10:18 AM (GMT)
WTF?! That's so screwed up! It's disrespectful to Asians and to all of the victims of that Tsunami. I don't suppose they'd be laughing so hard if one of THEIR friends or relatives were lost. Those people are so ... EVIL.

Tacofoolio - February 4, 2005 05:08 AM (GMT)
That's horrible. Thank you for making us aware of this so we can act, and make the ignorant people who were allowed to do this, and those who didn't stop it realize how stupid they are, and that it wont be tolerated. There are limits to free speech, especially for those who can brodcast it to a large number of people, and you'd think they'd have some decency in them to know how wrong they are. Who the hell hired those idiots?

I....can't believe anyone would really do that. That's such a terrible thing to do....*shakes head* Those guys deserve to be SHOT, not just fired.

Cloud Gainsborough - March 28, 2005 07:26 PM (GMT)
*Loads rifle*

Okay, maybe I'll let someone else do it... But it's really tempting to do away with asses like that.

Daga15 - March 29, 2005 06:38 PM (GMT)
i cant believe they are peope so...i dont know how to describe them... im not asian but i have see at the tv reports of the tsunami and it was very sad....

Aerith's_Man - April 1, 2005 12:34 AM (GMT)
That was so horrible and wrong. They are so inconsiderate and rude. I can't belive that someone actually would say do such a thing or even someone let another air that on the radio. Those people diserve to rot in hell. I am not Asian, but I was still offended.

Clerith-son - April 6, 2005 10:30 PM (GMT)
HaHaHa! I found it really funny, but don't get me wrong, I totally despise the song, but let me explain what I found funny. I'm sure that on 9/11 those two bastards were crying like babies, thinking that they were the world's martyrs, and that everybody should be crying for them, and willing to help, and now that the Tsnami incident happened, they write this song.

Its an stupid irony. I once thought that if someone lives an experience like 9/11 changes, but I also remember that idiots will always be idiots. Those two guys, and the radio people, should be in the worst jail in the world, so that the other prisioners would rape them or do some other bad things to those bastards.

Cloudsgirl - April 9, 2005 03:11 AM (GMT)
what kind of a heartless idiot would make a song like that? And what type of a moron would play it? This is a reason why I don't listen to rap! Everyone thinks it's so cool to buy guns, do drugs, and disrespect women. So cool that they blast it from their flippin stereos. Look what it has done to us as a society.

Aerith's_Man - April 9, 2005 06:30 AM (GMT)
That is the exact reason I do not listen to rap also.

Amen to that!!!

I think Edman said it best:
"I bet if some asian rapper made a song making fun of 11th of September, America would invade them. "
I think those idiots forgot that a lot of the victims were also Americans. Anyway, I heard the radio station apologized for this on air. Although I don't quite think that's good enough... But whatever. <_<

You said it!! How horrible it is for these two jerks to say these things! Why, they're like that guy I knew that constantly named his animals words like "negro" and "kuro" and made sure they were black in color! And HE thought it was hilarious. Idiots like that will never see the real tragedy of any situation. They'd probably laugh at their own deaths because they're heartless bastards. And they think they're such good, cool, lovable people for it...I could just spit on them all. I'm not Asian...but my boyfriend that I love more than anything is full-blooded Chinese, born in China, too! I would never let anyone call him a chink, not even my best friends.

Thanks for posting the information to the email and petition. It's clear that our society has severely deteriorated on the issue of morality, and I'm sure I'd never find anyone with a real code of honor in America these days (not a public figure, anyway). This abuse should not be tolerated.

umm eyes of a fighter, I know you are really mad, umm but Fag is sorta offensiveto me do to the fact that it is a refrence twords gays and I am gay.

But I heard so much peoples the other day singing it and I was so ticked I literally walked up to them and told them to go jump off a cliff..that song is so rude it is funny how people can hate others but once it is directed twords them they get mad and talk about how they are humans and equal.

Onigiri - May 30, 2005 05:25 AM (GMT)
I was quite angry when I heard about that. I feel like we are such a minority (especially where I live) that, like in Jin's song, said that if it were any other race, there would be a huge commotion, but when its towards asians 'it goes just under the radar'. Its pretty...no, REALLY offensive, but I have heard little to no mention of in on TV or newspaper...And hearing the radio talk before playing the song (where they were arguing with Miss Info), that really made me mad...and that shooting asians..I wanted to SHOOT him!

MizuMegami - May 30, 2005 11:26 PM (GMT)
I'm asian AND I'M VERY OFFENDED!!!
How could they do that!!?? I'm so going to e-mail those DJs!!! Fag..thats harsh. I'd use "bitches"... If i heard it, I would be phoning my butt off. I mean, that tsunami was terrible!!! All those people died, kids died, parents!!! How could they do that! What makes them so 1st class that they could but that on air. They have NO, absolutley NO right to do that!!

Starlight Night - July 3, 2005 05:45 AM (GMT)
I am Asian and that really affects me. I signed the peteion, but I don't know what else I can do. I can go up to the station, but I don't know where it's at. Some people are rasist, I understand that, but when they talk about the tsumami that happened a few months back, they really pull my hatred.

Dark and Light - July 3, 2005 09:02 PM (GMT)
OMG!!! I'm offended! I'm half Thai and dutch.
Urg! Those are sick freaks! This is insane!
sick b****es

Huntress Krystle - July 24, 2005 11:54 PM (GMT)
These people are the ones who deserve to be beheaded by terrorists..

I'm Asian and that song really offended me. Until now, I dont understand why there are people like that. Can't they do something productive instead of discriminating others? They're lucky they weren't the ones who lost an entire family! I believe their bad karma will come!
