Title: What Do You Make Of This?
Description: A quote from the Lifestream scene

Hyper-Ballad - January 28, 2005 07:52 PM (GMT)
Well, I've been replaying FFVII again just to cleanse my brain of "Through Tifa's Eyes". I recently completed the Lifestream sequence and something that Cloud says to Tifa there stuck with me:

Cloud: "No matter what anyone else says to me, it's your attitude that counts..."

Despite the slight C/Tness of it, I think it's a lovely quote. And I was wondering what you guys make of it, and how it fits into a Cloud/Aeris and Cloud/Tifa perspective. Personally, I always thought that Cloud wasn't including Aeris as "anyone else", that he was just referring to their friends, because out of everyone still living, it's her he feels closest to. So while I think it's a very intimate quote, I never really thought of it as romantic.

What does everyone else here think?

Edit: Just realised it's not spoken in the Lifresteam sequence, it's the Northern Crater! ::feels stupid::

Actually, that only appears to be a CloudxTifa hint when it's taken out of context. When it's taken in context, it's not a CloudxTifa hint at all. That line was also changed in the PC version to this (you'll see the relevance of the change in a minute):

The context of that statement happens right before the Reunion. At that moment, Sephiroth is trying to convince Cloud that 1) he is nothing more than a failed experiment of Hojo's, 2) that he was never a resident of Nibelheim, and 3) that he wasn't at the Nibelheim Event. What Cloud is actually saying in that line is that, since Tifa grew up with him, it's Tifa's opinion of whether he was born in Nibelheim or not that matters to him more than Sephiroth's opinion. Since she grew up with him, it's her opinion that counts regardless of what Sephiroth says. Here's the full context of it:

Sephiroth "Ha, ha, ha... Tifa..." "Why are you so worried and scared by those words?" "Hmm... Shall I show everyone here what's in your heart?"
(She quickly turns away, without a word.)
Sephiroth "Ha, ha, ha... You look like you're not feeling well."
(He disappears. Cloud turns to Tifa)
Cloud "...Tifa? Is Sephiroth right?"
(She doesn't speak for a long time.)
Tifa "Cloud..."
Cloud "Why are you so scared? Don't worry about me. I'm all right." "No matter how confused I am, I'll never believe a word that Sephiroth says."
(He looks at the ground.)
Cloud "It's true that sometimes I can't figure out who I am." "There's a lot of things muddled up in my memories." "But, Tifa......." "But you said, 'Long time no see, Cloud' right?" "Those words will always support me." "I am the one you grew up with. I'm Cloud of Nibelheim." "No matter how much I lose faith in myself, that is the truth."
(He looks up at Tifa.)
Cloud "That's why you shouldn't be so scared." "No matter what anyone else says to me, it's your attitude that counts..." (Changed to: it's your opinion that counts)
(He turns away. Tifa turns back towards him. She shakes her head.)
Tifa "No, that's not true, Cloud......"
(He shakes his head sadly and turns to face Tifa.)
Cloud "What's not? Aren't I the same Cloud you grew up with?"

So the context of the statement is that it's only Tifa's opinion of whether he grew up in Nibelheim that matters, since she would know better than Sephiroth about that.

Very clever reasoning, Anastar! I always wondered about that line, because I've seen it cited a lot as C/T evidence, even though I never personally interrpreted it as romantic. Seeing it in context cleared up a lot for me. Thanks Anastar! :D

No problem. I've had a number of Cloti's try to pull that one on me, too. When they throw it at you out of context, it appears to mean something that it doesn't.

Sad, but true. Thanks again for clearing it up for me! :D

Oh, but just for fun: If we take the quote out of context again ("No matter what anyone else says to me, it's your attitude that counts..."), how true do you think that statement is for Cloud and Aeris? :P
