Virginia Tech university has been shocked by the shootings At least 33 people have died after a multiple shooting incident at a Virginia university.

Police received 911 calls at around 07:15 local time (12:15 BST) this morning after reports of a shooting at one of the halls of the Virginia Tech (VT) university in Blacksburg, Virginia.

After investigating for around two hours further reports emerged of a shooting in a separate hall. VT's president, Charles Steger, said that the shooter was "deceased" but did not specify how he or she died.

Dr Steger said that the many victims of the shooting were being taken to local hospitals where they were receiving treatment. He described the attack as a "senseless and incomprehensible heinous act".

"The university will immediately set up counselling centres… to work with our campus community and our families. All classes are cancelled and university is closed for remainder of day," he added.

The incident is feared to be one of the deadliest school shootings in US history, in a country where gun crime and gun ownership are extremely politicised issues.

VT University has over 25,000 full-time students. Its campus is spread over 2,600 acres and over 100 buildings.

A convocation is scheduled for noon tomorrow at the university which Dr Steger said would allow Blacksburg "to come together to begin the healing process for this terrible tragedy".

US president George Bush has said he is "horrified" by the shootings

This is terrible news. There's another school shot up. It's as if schools aren't even safe from gunfire. This is a real tragedy. News also said that one of the shooters were killed, but they don't know how and they have another suspect but can't do anything because they don't have any proof. Also, it's said one of the shooters was trying to find his girlfriend, but couldn't find her.

Why do these things always seem to happen in the US?

Oh, gun laws....

Anyway, It's like a University version of Columbine.

It's terrible really, why would anyone go around shoot innocent people?
We were told that the shooter was angry at his Girlfriend and thats why he did it they also said he was said to be an Asian male who, after killing those 33 people shot himself.

The really stupid thing about it is that there apparently was one shooting before, but the school didn't shut down or at least drastically update their security, then there was the later one which it seems caused most of the "damage". This is different since you hear about high schools and that sort of thing, but Virgina Tech is a college. Most other school shootings were caused by teenagers who "couldn't take it anymore". I wonder what else will end up being known about the shooter in question, although he did kill himself after the fact.

I was so sad about this............... the story about the professor who probably saved alot of his students' lives by choosing to stay behind and prevent the shooter from opening the door was so tragic and heartwrenching. He was also a Holocaust survivor...

Oh yeah, and do you guys remember thatcrazy religion lady that was discussed a while ago??? Apparently she and her "church" are going to protest at the funerals...
