Title: Need Some New Anime To Watch
Heavens Cloud - April 12, 2007 06:07 PM (GMT)
Hey everyone! I have a taste in anime, but I am quite the n00b when it comes to anime in general. The only ones I've really watched are Dragonball Z, Rurouni Kenshin, and Saiyuki, and the only one of the three that I've kept up with is Saiyuki (I can hardly even say that lol! I've watched Gensomaden, but haven't watched ReLoad or ReLoad Gunlock)
Anyone have any suggestions for new anime to watch? Something like Saiyuki would be awesome! Thanks in advance! :)
nyrin - April 12, 2007 08:54 PM (GMT)
You can always go to animenewsnetwork.com and browse around for random titles. Any series that sound interesting to you, wikipedia them to find out more. I myself don't watch a lot of anime but I can tell you the stuff that I have liked in the past...
Fullmetal Alchemist - amazing anime, lost of fun, magic and science, drama and humour and all pretty pretty animation.
Buso Renkin - done by the same guy who did Rurouni Kenshin. Draws from the same mythology FMA does, and is pretty fun
Rahxephon - actually this was a bit too eva-ish for me but you might like it. It's very pretty, with big machines and deep (sometimes a bit too deep) characters and drama and fighting galore
Eureka Seven - A really good and original anime, another one from the Bones production group. I haven't finished it yet but it's really awesome so far.
Princess Tutu - not like Saiyuki at all but I have to pimp this anyway because it doesn't get enough love. It's a shoujo title and totally beautiful. And there's ballet. But it's awesome!!
Kaleido Star - again not like Saiyuki but one of the few titles I love. No magic or monsters, just a really spirited girl who joins the circus, and goes through a bunch of obstacles to become the top star. Beautiful animation, beautiful costumes and performances, a little too sugary sweet though.
Ouran High School Host Club - another Shoujo, it's bloody hilarious. My friend calls it the gayest het show in anime and I have to say that's true. SO funny and sweet.
Earth Girl Arjuna - It was kind of preachy about environmental issues but I love magical girl series so it was okay... plus it's only 13 episodes
Generator Gawl - again only 12 episodes but a great funny show, kick ass fighting, fun characters, should have been longer.
Older Titles:
Gundam Wing - a classic. The basic premise: Backstreet Boys in big giant machine fighting in a war between earth and the space colonies. Total love. A few characters might annoy you though (cough Relena)
Digimon 01 and 02 - this is pure fun, nothing really deep. Just kids and their poke-I mean digimon fighting bad creatures, developing relationships and saving the world.
Vision of Escaflowne - I think everyone into anime should watch this series at least once. It's an amazing blend of great storytelling, deep characters, kick ass fighting and a touching romance. My all time favourite.
I think those are the only ones I've seen that I'm comfortable reccing though there could be more. So ya just wikipedia those and do further research if you care to.
Heavens Cloud - April 12, 2007 08:59 PM (GMT)
Awesome!!!
Thank you so much for your insight! I'll definitely research these and see which ones I will look into... and yeah you hit it on the head with comedy animes... That was one of the reasons I fell in love with Saiyuki, aside from the great story it tells... But yeah, thanks a million! :D
MistaCloudStrife - April 12, 2007 09:37 PM (GMT)
Never really gotten into Saiyuki so I can't really compare it to other animes enough to give you any suggestions.
If you could tell me the genres you think you may be interested in I can probably filter the ones in my head down to a few that you may like. Any other information might help as well, such as if you can invest your time in a long anime (200+ episodes) or only have time for a short one.
Heavens Cloud - April 12, 2007 10:30 PM (GMT)
Hmm... Well, I'm a big fan of comedy series, or love series, either one works for me... or both if there are animes out there that mesh them together nicely... Also I can go for short or long series, it doesn't matter to me.
I also don't want anything that is too bubbly or girly (I've seen some that just looked kind of bizzare to me). Something with a good amount of action in it, and also, I want characters that have a bad-ass personality, but are also humorous at the same.. I can't really give examples besides Sha Gojyo and Genjo Sanzo from Saiyuki for those kind of characters...
Wintercream - April 13, 2007 12:26 AM (GMT)
If you are looking for some anime to get into them let me recommend some for you.
:D
BTW go to youtube.com, you are garanteed to find whatever anime you are looking for.
Full Metal Alchemist:
This anime is simply amazing! Eveythign from the the art to its Humor to its plot. It astoundingly addictive.
Naruto:
Serious you absolutely NEED to watch this anime, it is the bomb! The storyline does not just follow ONE person but atleast nine diffrent people and how thier lives affect each other. Not to mention a hand full of other chara thrown in to spice things up. :D
Yu Yu Hakusho:
This anime it somthing to watch if you are into those type of demon slayer kinds of anime with a mix of fantasy. Simply Ah-Ma-Zing..
Spiral:
This anime is a sort of murder mystery type of thing. Evrything from betrayel to love to blah.
:D
Death Note:
A cutting edge manga. If you like to be put on the edge.
Here are a few tohers you might be interested in:
Juvenille Orion
Kare Kano
Ai Yori Aoshi
LoveLess <- a must see!!!! :yahoo:
Fruits basket <- Another must see!! :ok:
I hope i help you in some way
:D
Heavens Cloud - April 13, 2007 12:56 AM (GMT)
Yes, you have, thank you so much! :)
And thanks for bringing up Yu Yu Hakusho... I remember watching that one on adult swim back in the day, and it was awesome!! I only got to watch a few episodes though... but yeah, thanks again! :D
FF_Goddess - April 13, 2007 01:08 AM (GMT)
I can definitely recommend Yu Yu Hakusho, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Fruits Basket, like others on here have done. ^_^ I can also recommend:
Inuyasha
Hellsing
Trigun
Wolf's Rain
.hack//Sign
Bleach
Twelve Kingdoms
Trinity Blood
Ah My Goddess
Tenchi Muyo
Yukari - April 13, 2007 02:26 AM (GMT)
You definitely have to get your hands on Inuyasha. It's a great, action packed series, with awesome characters. Inuyasha's a surly half demon with sibling issues, Miroku's a perverted monk (and my favourite character), Kagome's a fiesty and likable schoolgirl, and Sesshomaru is pure awesome.
I'd also recommend Trigun, which is a Western style series, with lots of gunslinging and saloons, a goofy but badass lead character, two 'insurance girls' and a priest who carries a giant cross that doubles as a rocket launcher/machine gun.
Hellsing is another must-see. It's a vampire anime, and Alucard is the coolest character ever. He's immensely powerful, and works for the secret Hellsing organisation, hunting down artificially created vampires.
If you like supernatural type anime, then you might want to check out Witch Hunter Robin. It takes a while to get going, but I enjoyed it. Like Hellsing, the main characters work for a secret organisation, this time hunting 'witches'. At the beginning there's a different witch each episode that the team hunt, but the story gets more complicated about halfway through.
Cowboy Bebop goes without saying, but I'll recommend it anyway! It's about three bounty hunters: Spike, Jet and Faye, and a genius girl named Ed who live aboard the spaceship, Bebop. At the beginning, each episode is focused on the bounty of the week, but eventually Spike's past starts catching up with him.
Lastly for now, GTO, short for Great Teacher Onizuka. I LOVE this anime. It is hilarious. It is awesome. It must be watched. It's about 22 year old Onizuka, who used to be the leader of a biker gang in his younger days and is initially trying to become a high school teacher so he can perv over the teenage girls in their short skirts. But he ends up teaching a middle school class that have sent their last three homeroom teachers crazy, and during the series he learns how much he likes actually teaching, and how much he doesn't like all the rules and regulations the school board have, and how they treat students as statistics. Trust me, every episode is really, really funny.
Resha - April 13, 2007 03:54 AM (GMT)
I agree with the others, Full Metal Alchemist, Inuyasha and Furuba is a must watch, but I recommend to read the Furuba manga as well!
ROD The TV
Negima
Rahxephon
Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien (for short, Rumbling Hearts/The Eternity You Desire)
Digimon 01 (personal favourite, you have no idea how much I worship this!)
Gakuen Alice
Maria-sama ga Miteru
Black Cat
Ichigo 100%
Full Metal Panic! Series
Initial D Series--if you're interested in car racing, that is, but great story line!
Tennis no Ohjisama
Angel Sanctuary
Paradise Kiss
NARUTO
Card Captor Sakura
Chobits (another masterpiece of CLAMP)
Midori no Hibi
DN Angel (you won't regret watching this, lots of anime-hotness)
One Piece
NekoDono - April 13, 2007 11:06 AM (GMT)
Here's some I like. ^^ I love Saiyuki and I find it is sort of one of a kind but still.
Samurai Deeper Kyo - A tad vulgar at times but good.
Bleach - If you're into stories involving spirits and stuff here ya go.
NANA - If you're feeling girly, it's a soap opra in anime form
God Child - Creepy goth goodness
Vampire Night - Vampires every where!!
Baby & Me - Simply touching and heart warming. Driven me to tears more than once.
Cain Saga - Prequel to God Child
Ranma 1/2 - Weird romantic comedy
God Child & Cain Saga are my #1 picks though.
yin-chan - April 13, 2007 11:24 AM (GMT)
I second the suggestion on Cowboy Bebop, especially if you're into a more serious storyline (with a splash of humour) and bad-ass characters. It's a bit old, but it's the kind of anime that will never stop being awesome.
Most of the time I prefer reading manga over watching anime, but I'd also recommend Bleach, GTO, One Piece, Shaman King...basically most of the good shonen series flying around.

Alright. I'll have to divide this up... Keep in mind that this list isn't absolute. Other genres may slightly merge into some that are listed under another genre. For example, "Ouran Koukou" may have a slight bit of romance involved, or "Suzuka" may have a few Lol moments, etc.
Also, I don't really have time to type a summary or review for all the animes I'm going to list so I'll type a few comments about the ones that I actually remember and like.
Comedy:
GTO - Great Teacher **Onizuka. When you first mentioned a character that was bad ass and humorous at the same time, this person came to mind. Pretty lengthy anime and a great comedy. If you really get into it you can also read the manga. There's a few mangas that you could read about Onizuka's past. Pretty interesting.
Ouran Koukou Host Club
Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu
Love/Romance:
I"s Pure - I"s is arguably the best romance manga ever created. You ask an otaku romance manga reader and they'll suggest this manga to you right away. I"s Pure is the anime version of that manga.
Zimi ga Nozomu Eien
Suzuka
Shuffle!
Onegai Teacher
Onegai Twins
Kare Kano
Nana
Paradise Kiss
Kashimashi (Semi-Yuri)
Air
Romance-Comedy:
Ichigo 100%
Negima!?
Love Hina
Love Hina Again(Thats what it's called >_>)
Chobits
DNA2
Adventure/Action/Comedy:
One Piece - Long long long anime. I actually just started watching this one. 3 weeks and couaght up to the recent episodes(About 300 or so). If you're goig to watch this I suggest Japanese with subtitles. I can't imagine the English version being very good. Also **Zoro would go under your badass/funny list.
Full Metal Panic - Great anime. Pretty short. Basically a military freak, **Sousuke is assigned to take care of this girl by going to her school and protect her at all times. Of course he's not trained for everyday life stuff, so you can imagine what happens.
Full Metal Panic Fumoffu - Same as before, but less action more comedy. I actually liked this one more that the first.
Naruto - **Kakashi
Rurouni Kenshin - **Kenshin **Sanosuke
Hunter x Hunter
Trigun - **Vash
Get backers - Lol, you'll probably like this one. **Ban **Ginji **Akabane **Shido **Jubei
Samurai Champloo **Mugen **Jin
Chrno Crusade
Air Gear
Adventure/Action/Romance:
Tsubasa Chronicles - Probably the best example of Adventure/Romance. I really like this one. It's sort of round about; pretty much they have to go around collecting feathers. Reminds me of CCS and InuYasha... but better. =P
Ayashi no Ceres
Fushigi Yuugi
Speed Grapher

** = Badass/humorous Characters

Hades' Daughter - April 13, 2007 12:56 PM (GMT)
Just a few recommendations from me:
1) Full Metal Panic, Full Metal Panic: The Second Raid, Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu.
The first two series are full of action with some romance...and the third one is a comedy that's packed with a ton of fun and a touch of romance. This one has robots in it, but the characters themselves far outshine the robots.
2)Fate/Stay Night:
Action/romance/fantasy.
Basically, the characters in here are fighting each other for the Holy Grail which can grant whomever ends up with it a wish. Each character is a magician and the master of a dead warrior from the past, and these dead warriors pretty much fight for their masters. Also, I'm going to mention that this anime has one of the best OST I've ever heard in any anime.
3)Vision of Escaflowne:
Adventure/fantasy/romance
It was one of the very first animes I saw. It's about a high school girl called Hitomi who's into reading tarot cards. She meets Van, a Prince who was accidently transported to Earth from the world of Gaia while out on a dragon quest to be King. Anyway, when Van returns to his world, Hitomi accidently gets taken along with him by the light. She ends up in Gaia with him and when his kingdom gets invaded, that's pretty much where their adventure begins.
Lynn - April 13, 2007 02:03 PM (GMT)
I didn't see this mentioned, but then again, you did say you wanted love/comedy... but here goes my suggestion:
Monster: Psychological/Drama/Mystery
(I'll let ANN sum it up for me :P) Kenzou Tenma, a Japanese brain surgeon in Germany, chose to save the life of a young boy who got shot in the head over the life of the mayor. As a result he lost the support of the hospital director. A short time later, the hospital director and the doctors that replaced him were murdered, and Tenma became the chief suspect. As a matter of fact, it seems that the boy he saved was much more than he had appeared to be... Now to clear his name and to correct his past mistake, Tenma must get to the bottom of these and other murders, and investigate the truth of the Monster who is behind all of this.
Might be weird to say this for a anime/manga series, but the writing for this series is just fantastic. A bit corny here and there, but the main plot really gripped me. It's a bit psychological, but not in the Evangelion kind of way. It's set in a very real world, and yet, it suggests that even in our real world, there can exist this kind of pure, irrevocable evil that should only be in fantasies. It also amazes me how the mangaka can design characters who look like perfectly kindly old men, yet is able to twist their expressions into pure horror without going over-board.
At 74 eps, I don't find it too long. The cliffhangers can kill ya, but I believe it's already been fully subbed, so you should have no problem. Other than Tenma, the story branches out to explore other characters as well.
Resha - April 13, 2007 02:38 PM (GMT)
I'll just give a summary to KGNE and Maria-sama ga Miteru/Marimite.
Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien- about three friends finding themselves in the strings of love, friendship and betrayal.
Marimite- about women who studies at a Catholic school and how they show their feminity to the Lillian sisterhood.
Hanbun no Tsuki Ga Noboru Sora- about two teens falling in love at a hospital--they both have sickness...I like the manga version, try reading it as well!!!
Detective Conan/Case Closed- one of the longest running anime, still on air at Japan!!! It's about Kudo Shinichi being drugged of somewhat pills that returned to his youth as Edogawa Conan. Another one of my favourites!!!
Other detective-like animes: Dan Detective School/Detective School Q
Flame of Recca- one of the earliest animes I've watched, it's about an ordinary high school student Hanabishi Recca learns about his past being the heir of the Hokage Ninja Clan--and was transported to the present world 400 years ago.
Daa!! Daa!! Daa!!- a quite old anime...but you won't regret watching this, a UFO baby crashes on Kanata's temple and Miyu moves in...just simply tasty...
other:
Jigoku Shoujo
Kamichu
Kyou Kara Maoh!
Law of Ueki
Ragnarok the Animation
*Hana Yori Dango
Ojamajo Doremi
Sakura Wars
Hana-Kimi
Hunter x Hunter
Groove Adventure RAVE (that's where I got my username)
Twin Signal/Spica
Ultra Maniac
To Heart (I recommend the 2nd)
Shakugan no Shana
Gokusen (also watch the Japanese drama)
Absolute Boyfriend (I just love the romance here!!!)
Solty Rei
manga:
Penguin Brothers- this is just totally awesome! It's about a newcomer Hina (grey) who wants to stop the stereotypical brothers Isshiki (white) and Nishizaki (black). Fully romance for Isshiki and Hina!!!

Seriously, I highly recommend you watch this anime. Good choice brining it up, Misatcloudstrife. Although, I must say Zoro reminds me of Benitora from S.D.K (Which I also recomend you watch.)
[high fives.]
:D
I can't possibly say enough about this anime. Its funny, adventurous, edgy, and just plain out fun to watch. I would place this second under Naruto. Which of course i reccomend you watch.
ANOTHER HIGHLY KICK-ASS ANIME I RECOMMEND YOU ALL WATCH, LE PRONTO
D.N A.ngel
This is a beautiful anime, for anyone who likes a combination between, bitter-sweet love, love triangles, diception, betrayel, mystery, adventerous. It revolves around the life of fourteen-year-old, Niwa Daisuke, who, becuase of his Kekkei Genkai, is possesed by The Legenday Phantom Thief, Dark. Now, everytime he thinks of his true love, Risa Harada, he transforms into his "other form. (A.K.A dark-kun.) Now the thing is, in order to win possesion over the body, Daisuke must have his true love return his feelings for him. The twist is, if Dark has his true love return his feelings back towards him, then he wins possesion over the body. ANOTHER TWIST, Dark's true love is Risa Harada's twin sister. I'd go from there but then i would have reached the spoiler state.
[Takes breathe.]
Wow look at me already ranting.
:D

Wow, so many different animes to choose from... and they all sound good too!
Thanks again everyone, you all have been such a great help! I'll be honest, if I were to ask another question on any other forum, I wouldn't get nearly as much help... at least that's the way it was for me on other forums... so thank you all soooo much!!!

And also there's a spin-off of Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien I forgot... It's called Akane Maniax. So if you watch Kimi Nozo, you might be interested in this as well.

Try the anime version of Deltora Quest.
Basically, the Shadow Lord's army invaded Deltora. However, Adin forged the Belt of Deltora and went to all seven Tribes and combine their Gems' power and repell the Shadow Lord's army.
Many years later, Adin's descendant rule in the city of Del until the seven great gems was stolen and separate all over Deltora and the land fell underneath the Shadow Lord's rule.
Lief's adventure begins on his 16th birthday, tasked with finding the Gems and the heir to Deltora in order to bring peace back to his home with his companions.
Why watch it? It's fantasy, the good ol' swords fighting scenes and the fact that Lief is one of the rare protagonist who KNOWS something is wrong and determine to do something about it from the beginning.<3

I think it has already been mentioned that you can find most of these animes at youtube. Otherwise, if you feel like downloading animes, a good place to go to is
Anime Eden which had a good variety the last time I was there.(Thanks to Lynn for having provided the link, btw :) ).

Something like Saiyuki....
Weiss Kruez:: Four guys who sells flowers by day and assassins by night. I know it sounds corny, but that is the premise of it all. And the show is watchable.
Yu Yuu Hakusho: Also features four guys who fights demons, evil spirits and even violent humans. A classic.
Get Backers: Two guys working as retrievers (they find missing things).
I know it's not anime per se, but I suggest you try Avatar: the Last Airbender. It's pretty smart, well thought of, awesome fighting scenes that I find myself wishing all animated medium series should be like this.
