Title: Bridge To Terabithia
Kusari Yarou - March 17, 2007 12:59 PM (GMT)
7 years after reading the book, and already two weeks after seeing the movie...why does this story still have such an effect on me? *wipes away tear and sighs*
At this moment, I can''t seem to dredge up any reviews that are worthy of the movie. 'Sides I loved it too much, and will probably be biased XD. I'll just leave a short quote from the review of the movie; for those who were fooled by the 'kiddy' trailer, and for those who saw it and wholeheartedly agree:

| this is not a fantasy story but a story about how fantasy transports us, and also a painfully grounded tale of the stripping away of naivete that is adolescence, and how heartbreakingly excruciating an experience that can be. |

I have a question, does the movie follow the book well?
Kusari Yarou - March 17, 2007 04:57 PM (GMT)
Plotwise, yes, it follows the book VERY well. Everything's there, SPOILER from the essaying on SCUBA diving; to The Gold Room; to Janice Avery crying in the stalls; to Leslie, Jesse, and Maybelle's discussion on Jesus(taken nearly word for word from the book)... to Leslie's death END SPOILER. Everything. If you're a stickler, who wants the events followed verbatim, then you'll be glad.
I know Leslie's portrayal in the trailer doesn't seem too promising, but don't let looks deceive you! She may be pretty and a fashion rebel as opposed to the books androgynous, tomboyish description of Leslie...but you'll still fall completely in love with her character! She's still imaginative, quirky and endearing; the actress does not have that cloying habit of trying to be cute, like some others I could mention. I know a lot of readers will prefer to see the tomboyish gal with a heart of gold...well in the movie, Leslie is still Leslie, only with a cuter face, and minus the twang.
Oh yes, now that I mention the accents...they basically modernized the book's rustic setting Jesse is more suburban boy, less farm boy. They don't say 'ain't' and stuff like that, they talk like ordinary American kids.
A plus of the movie is how it made me understand Jesse better. As I remember him in the book, he seemed listless and deflated, only coming to life after Leslie brings him to Terabithia. In the movie, the actor portrayed him with more soul, so I understand exactly *why* he wants to fit in, keeps to himself, his issues with his family...
The best thing about it is, the special effects do not take over. They remain imaginary, just plot devices. I know this is kinda cheesy-sounding, but the magic was really in the two leads :P
Hope that helps!

I REEEEELLY wanna see it now! I hope it's in theatres by the end of next week >.<
Tacofoolio - March 19, 2007 05:34 PM (GMT)
I'll definitely want to see it then, I was worried that it had been completely changed when I saw the previews. I loved that book while growing up, I really should read it again too.

Enjoy! :D
But uh-oh...do your nieces know about the spoilery ending? Or dyou think they'll feel bad about i?
'Cos I am cringing at all the grossly exaggerated things that some outraged parents have to say about this movie. "This movie traumatized my child, I had do drag him, sobbing, out of the theater!" spoiler"This movie is about the senseless death of an adorable child! DO NOT SEE IT"spoiler:rolleyes:
Come ON! All children learn, sooner or later, that spoiler bad things can happen to good people...even to children like themselves. spoiler

I....cried. The part that really got me was his drawing of Leslie
Anyways, I really liked the movie. I loved the opening credits and how they highlighted Jess's drawing, and the movie wasn't an EXACT replica of the book, but they really translated the situations into a modern setting well. And I loved Leslie's style xD
My nieces were fine! I don't think the younger one even knew what happened! (She was too busy running circles around the theater).
spoiler!
Ugh, Kusari you're KIDDING right!? Have those people ever READ the book!? It's like...a piece of America's CHILDHOOD! It's about coping and going ON with life, the ending was VERY happy! Ugh ugh

You should see the boards at IMDB.com. I just want to discuss the *movie*, but everyday, some arse rants about it.
It's detractors are mostly:
A. Upset, uptight parents whose kiddies were traumatized(or so they say ) spoilerI know this movie where the best friend gets stung to death by bees, and they SHOW it, and they also show his dead body...but no one ever called that traumatizing!
B. People who were expecting something kick ass and action packed and missed the whole damn point of Terabithia being imaginary. You can tell a lot about these people's IQ's by the names they give the movie. Bridge to Teraboredthia, Bridge to Terribleithia...SHEESH
C. People upset about Leslie's statement on Jesus. "I don't have to believe it, but I think it's beautiful". I don't know WHY they claim it's blasphemous! She said she thought it was beautiful! spoiler WORST of all, they say that she's burning in hell, totally ignoring what Jesse's dad said in the end <_<
BTW, love how they portray the relationship between Jesse and his dad...the final scene between them also made teary.

Wasn't that MayBelle's drawing, though? :P
Oh yes, the scene where he's floating the raft into the creek...
Y'know, in the book, I never saw anything couple-y between Leslie and Jesse. But in the movie, there's the scene where Jesse watches her skipping in the rain, and he smiles dreamily the way he did when he first saw Miss Edmunds...it was so cute! Makes me think they could have been together...

I know the other film you're talking about, My Girl right? I read that book long before I saw the movie, lol.
