Title: Jenova
Description: He or She?

Clorith88 - February 4, 2007 06:17 PM (GMT)
there's something i wonder about with Jenova...

We all refer 2 her as "she" since she is sephiroth's mother
yet when u watch the video in the icicle inn with gast and ifalna when they tlk about jenova , ifalna says:
"he came to us as a friend"
"he infected them with the virus"

of course the confusion can begin with lucrecia giving birth 2 sephiroth b4 turning into jenova but what do u think?

Well, I always thought it is an "it" able to take whatever form it likes. I can't remember wether they said something about that in the game or not, though. But it seemed to make most sense...

Clorith88 - February 4, 2007 08:41 PM (GMT)
lol "it" is understanable

thx 4 ur opinion :)

I don't have the game script with me, but are you sure they said "he"?

Anyway, I think Jenova has the ability to morph. I remember Ifalna saying something about Jenova taking the form of the Ancients' brothers and sisters, plus we've also seen how Sephiroth took on Tifa's form in the Northern Crater.

So I guess "it" would also be the best choice, although I usually think of Jenova as female (kinda hard to remove that impression after seeing her eye-boob). Maybe whatever planet Jenova comes from, there's no such thing as gender. :P

Hello youthful children...

I'm here to introduce you to Jenovaism.

I am the high priest of Jenova. We are JENOVA'S WITNESSES.

Jenova is my mother...she's not your mother, okay, she's mine!

Commandment number 1...there is only one JENOVA...not 5 not 6, just 1.
Commandment number 2, worship JENOVA all the time...and while you're at it, I'm the high priest of Jenovaism worship me too!

I'm the main villain of Advent Children...me damnit, it's not Sephiroth, Sephiroth had his spotlight and I am the one to be worshipped as god!

But now...I shall take you all.

Let's get wet.

Don't mind the black oily stuff...I'm just changing the water into wine. Baptism in wine is so sensual...

Angelalex242: hello, high priest of jenova.

I thought Jenova's asexual.

Alex: If I, too, have ever refer her as my 'mother', however indirectly, please forgive me too.*bow*

I think that Jenova is a female alien with the ability to change her gender. I think at first she approached the Cetra as a male when the outbreak started on the Northern Continet. Once the Cetra on the Northern Continet were wiped out, I think it really didn't matter what gender Jenova approached the other Cetra tribes because she wanted them wiped out for good, possibly strip every lifeform of their lifeforce. and then move on leaving a barren and lifeless planet to die sliently in empty void of space.

I perceive this little debacle involving Jenova as one of two things.

#1: A possible technical fault at Square, probably during the translation process. Heck, from what I hear, Aerith wasn't supposed to be called Aeris in the English adaptation, but that's how the translators perceived it. This could be yet another example of translation error.

#2: As mentioned, Jenova could be an 'it,' and have taken a female figure most frequently - especially in the eyes of Sephiroth and the SHM - because individuals sympathise and care for their mother more than any other entity on the Planet [except a possible soulmate]. Having observed mankind for some time, she could have quite easily picked up on it, and warped her body for that purpose. And since Ifalna is an Ancient, and aware of the tales of what happened before the time Shinra found Jenova, she said 'he' because it's possible Jenova appeared to them as a male before dawning a female mask.

QUOTE ("Jenova-roth")
The ability to change one's looks, voice, and words, is the power of Jenova.

So her appearance is not an indicator whatsoever.

I never noticed that before. Oh well. lol. I'll catch it again next time I play though.

I've always thought of Jenova as a woman since Sephy always called her 'mother' and same goes for the SHM.

Well, Jenova is mostly seen as a mother figure because of Hojo's lies to Sephiroth which lead to the whole mother-Jenova-Nibelheim-insanity thing. Sephiroth figures out the truth of Jenova and his creation later on, but it's the Nibelheim scene that imprints on us. Plus, seeing as he's been infused with Jenova's DNA and cells, she does have a claim to being his parent, at least genetically.

As for Jenova's appearance, I personally think that's just the form it was using when the Cetra sealed it. It probably didn't have enough strength to break the seal until Sephiroth summoned Meteor. When that happened, it was able to assume its true form, Jenova Synthesis. But by that time it was too late and Sephy had control.
