Title: Avatar The Last Airbender
Anti-R - January 11, 2007 02:39 PM (GMT)
I got a DVD set of the series as a christmas gift from my aunt in the US this year. And I didn't pay attention of it when it was aired locally (which I blame the TV executives: they keep repeating the same episodes in a random order once a week).
But wow, I am impressed once I sat down at the TV and look into it. The world the show is in is well thought of, the plot is good, all the characters are likeable, and the fighting scenes are so well done.
I'm looking forward to it for the next book and was wondering if anyone felt the same.
MistaCloudStrife - January 11, 2007 03:42 PM (GMT)
I was actually pretty suprised how well they put it together. I like Sokka. Comedy in the form of sarcasm makes me laugh..(House PWNs) The story is pretty simple, but I can understand that children watch it, so it can't be complicated.
Hm... Actually it shouldn't really be a suprise that it's made so well since Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino(The creators of Avatar) are actually big anime fans. >=) I believe they've gotten inspiration for Avatar from animes like My Neighbor Totoro and Cowboy Bebop...
Anti-R - January 12, 2007 05:59 AM (GMT)
And from what my friends are saying Samurai Champloo and FLCL were confirmed inspirations too. And the Miyazaki films as well.
They also like Kung Fu movies such as Shaolin Soccer. Which I also like. XD
But yeash, my brother commented the creators look like avid anime fans.
Me too (my fave was when he promised the karmic powers he'd be a vegeterian and a straight talk person then abandoned it altogether as soon as he was rescued). Actually I like all the cast of Avatar, which is amazing. Even the crazy trio chicks.
I can't pick up a favorite yet...
I looked where the fandoms stand in the ships... and am surprised how huge the Zuko/Katara thing is. I was like "EWWW. NO!" when I first found out since both were more like "they'd kill each other than kiss each other" thing. Especially with Aang concerned.
It's as bad as Draco and Hermione. Ick.
Then again, now I know how Lynn feels. Seeing the main character go romantic is like seeing your little brother you're very fond of trying to flirt (and succeeding) a girl he likes, and you can't help but cringe.
Real_Emotion - January 13, 2007 06:08 PM (GMT)
I've been watching Avatar since it first aired in Nick. When I first saw commercials for it, I was worried that it may just be another lame 'american' anime, like Teen Titans or that show with the three airheads as spies. But, after watching the first episode, I became hooked. The story is easy to follow and it easily pulls you in. The comedy is funny and not too childish, where as some go to overboard. Like, for example, the overexaggerated expressions common in anime, aren't annoying here, like it is in... Teen Titans and some Asian Anime. They know the borders of funny facial expressions and overly exaggerated ones.
I also love the cast of characters. They each have an interresting story. I find that Zuko's is the most compelling to witness though. I was really impressed his story and with the trasformation of his character from evil prince/enemy to rogue/ally-ish/runaway fugative to back to enemy.

I know how you feel. Even though I ship Kotara&Aang, when he proclaimed he loved her I was just . I dunno... maybe it the fact they're still rather young contributes to it. I can't take adolescent romance seriously... even if I support it. :P
goddess_in_pink07 - January 13, 2007 06:20 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I acutually liked the show quite well. ^^ It had a good plot. I can't help but like Prince Zuko for some reason...o___o He just had such a sad history, and he was trying so hard to regain honor.
Kotara had amazing water skills. I loved water the most, and I thought it was really cool how she could bend it.
As for couples, I don't really care who gets who. I'm happy with either or. ^^

Though the fans voiced their disappointment of Zuko joining the Fire Nation again, I always consider that's what he'd really do. He already set his mind and heart of being a Fire Nation prince right from season 1. And given the choice, he's really marked to regain his honor. He also dislikes being helped, even when they were his bitter enemies.
He tried living the "good life" like what his uncle wanted. But I don't think that's what he wanted at all. And that's what's so great about him.

Well, Zutara having a large fanbase isn't that surprising since there are quite a few people who don't mind or like pairings because of antagonistic feelings between the two. I personally thought that Kataang wouldn't really go anywhere since Aang was so childish at the beginning. I guess now he's matured, but I still see him as a kid. Kind of hard to see him in a serious romantic relationship. But Zuko/Katara isn't totally unlikely anymore, especially after certain events in the season 2 finale. The makers of Avatar must really pay attention to fan speculation!
It's as bad as Draco and Hermione. Ick.
Coincidentally, the above is also one of my pet pairings. :P Not going to happen, I know, but I've liked it since I first read it seven years ago.
With or without pairings, Avatar still is a good series. Sokka's humor is always funny, especially his description of Zuko as an 'angry jerk' or something along those lines. Toph looks cute and fragile, but she's powerful! Katara is always cool. And Aang is... Well, Aang is the main character. You can't not like the main character.

About Zuko turning, I don't think it's so much about him not wanting to be "good" as much as it is his wanting his daddy's approval above all else, even after everything Ozai put him through.

After seeing "The Fortuneteller" and "Cave of Two Lovers", I seriously doubt it. Plus Zuko putting his foot into it in the "Crossroad of Destiny". Well, Katara'd have to be a really forgiving type if she can overlook that his indirect action nearly killed Aang.
But cheers for fandom! It won't be fun without it, I guess.

Yeah, it's actually in character of him.

Only seen Book: Water (first season) by TV (I LOVE YOU, ROLLERCOASTER!).
I seriously love the show. How can one not?
I enjoy the characters, from Aang to Zuko ( :fangirl: ), so I'm awaiting the next season this year. Plus more Sokka moments, one cannot have enough of him.
The fights are great, too, after seeing martial arts in Hong Kong films and whatnot, so I'm impressed with the creator's choice for each fighting style.
Right now, from what I've seen, no comments on pairings. Maybe on some Sokka's prospects, but need to see other girls I've heard about.
goddess_in_pink07 - January 15, 2007 04:45 PM (GMT)
I felt really bad when Zuku got that terrible mark on his face...<__< he was actually quite cute before he got it... Why! It was even worse cause his own father had to do it....but, when your in a kingdom that revolves around honor, its what has to be done....

Well, Fire Nation is supposed to be based on Chinese dynasties, so I'm not surprise at the focus on honour and how Zuko end up chasing the Avatar.
But that doesn't mean I'm not affected by it. :(

Really? For me, they're Japanese inspired. Advanced technology, imperialistic, their respect towards the sun, and all that stuff.

Sokka's a pimp. Seriously, he gets a lot of girls' attention, and he's not even trying that hard. >.>
I draw the line at Sokka/Azula ship. *shudder*
daydreamer198 - February 16, 2007 07:17 AM (GMT)
I love this show. ^_^
At first, I was expecting something on the lines of an anime, but when you really watch it, you can clearly see that the humor is Western. And that, is what makes it excellent.
I ship Zutara! >_< *gets shot*

Well, I can see the Chinese inspirations. War armours, ships, military and heck, even their names (i.e Xiao)! Zuko's name in Chinese characters is Zhu Koh. (Don't mind me, it's all those Feudal China shows and movies my parents love to watch.)
ABC is re-airing the first season before Rollercoaster comes back on TV and then aired the next season. :D

When you look at the credits, I see mostly Korean names.
Pyra Kurai Akaidra - February 16, 2007 08:09 AM (GMT)
Well, it's understandable. I saw the Earth Kingdom with Korean influences, myself.
Need to watch more on the Zutara thing. (I remember a hilarious comic about those two on DeviantART. :lmao: )

It's because the animation is actually done in Korea. Same way as the recent anime production from Japan.

I guess Zutara is okay, even though it's just weird for me (I never support two characters who are bent on kicking each others' ass). Then again, I'm not particularly wild about Zuko in the first place
Maiden - February 18, 2007 06:52 PM (GMT)
I love this show myself, but I hardly get to watch it since I work about the time it comes on here, but from what I have watched it is love. My grandma actually got me into this show since she is a huge anime/cartoon fan. ^^;
I really don't know what much to say about it besides that I'm a big Katara x Aang fan.

Love this show--any word on S3 yet? O_O
I have done quite a bit of Avatar fanart now, mostly Zuko/Song. Go fig, eh? XD
Here's the one I just put up today:

:lust: Avatar fanart!!!
Those are simply lovely, Inuyatta! I particularly love the Aang/Katara one.
Speaking of season 3 of Avatar, is there any news of when they'll start airing the new episodes? And did anyone so that Avatar game-thing? The one were they give you codes to see this animated comic or something like that? Just curious if anyone viewed the comic... (I wanna know what it was about.)
Inuyatta - February 19, 2007 05:18 AM (GMT)
R_E, thanks! XD I've definitely had an Avatar muse for quite a while now, and I just keep churning out the fanart--I still have a few more to color right now. Thanks for looking!
It was just basically a short on the shipping that kinda pokes fun at all of the shippers. In fact, if you check the avatar_fans group on livejournal, there's probably a few posts somewhere with links to the video. If not, I know there are plenty of screencap galleries of the segment.

Pyra Kurai Akaidra, I think I need the timetable on when Avatar: The Last Airbender's on. I keep missing episodes.
Is it on every Thursday and Wednesday at 5:30? I keep missing out!
Inuyatta - February 23, 2007 07:51 AM (GMT)
Thanks, Anti-R. XD I even posted my Jin cosplay in the photoalbum recently just for the lurking avatards on this board.
The one major problem I have with Avatar right now is just what Pyra mentioned--it never seems to have a steady time schedule, and now that Youtube has gone anti-avatar, it'll be even harder for people to catch it. ;-;
Anti-R - February 24, 2007 02:08 AM (GMT)
I heard that they're airing it again in the Philippines by March 1. And we haven't finished season 1 yet. T.T
Well, you guys can buy the complete set (Water, Earth is still trickling, but DVDs are being released).

ABC is reairing it every Mon-Fri at 5:35pm. They're showing the entire first season before Rollercoaster comes back on 26th. Then we'll see...for me, Rollercoaster give me Avatar, however, they need to fit in other cartoons and shows, hence for some shows being aired once a week.
