In my opinion this pairing is too cliched and it has no developement. And it's kind of cheesy saying that they are the "chosen ones". So i would really like your opinions on this couple.

I don't agree at all that Cleris is too cliched or that it didn't have any development. While you think Cleris is cheesy, I happen to think Cloti just didn't happen in the game or in AC. I'm tempted to ask you, as well, why you like Cloti, but I'll save that for other forums.

I thought it was developed perfectly. I'm still kind of amazed at the tremendous job Square was able to do in creating this couple within just the first disc, and making Aerith's death that moving. I didn't sign up on this forum to debate or prove why I liked Cleris-- only to appreciate them. And while I certainly could go deeply into their development in the game, I'll be super brief.

Moments of development:
--Cloud is initially portrayed as being insensitive, cold, uncaring
--they have a "chance" meeting after Cloud blows up the Mako reactor; emphasizes that they're possibly fated to be together
--when they actually meet, Aerith is playful and offers to go on a date with Cloud if he acts as her bodyguard; Cloud agrees and there are NO alternatives to his unquestioned agreement
--after escaping the church, Cloud teases Aerith, and she makes him laugh; only time he laughs throughout the entire game; we get our first glimpse of Aerith bringing out Cloud's softer, emotional side that he tries to hide
--Cloud and Aerith have a cute moment together in the playground where they talk for a little bit about their past; he's already confiding in her
--in the basement of Don Corneo's mansion, when Aerith offers to help, Cloud immediately says no, he can't get her involved; Aerith then asks if it's okay if Tifa's in danger; he doesn't really know how to reply; evidence that Cloud cares for Aerith is already showing up
--after Aerith is captured by the Turks and the Sector Plate falls, Tifa, Cloud, and Barret are in the playground; while Tifa and Barret can only lament what has just happened and all the people who just died, Cloud remains silent, and simply walks away; Tifa says it's because he's preoccupied about Aerith; even after such a tragic event happens, Cloud's main concern is Aerith's safety
--while saving Aerith from Shinra, Cloud and company are captured, and put in detention cells; when Cloud hears Aerith in the cell next to his, he is very relieved that she is safe; Aerith thanks him for saving her, and his playful reply is, "Hey, I'm your bodyguard, right?"; the promise for the date is again brought up
(fastforward a lot 'cause I don't remember the game that well :lmao: )
--in Cosmo Canyon, Cloud learns of the burden put on Aerith by being a Cetra; Aerith says that she is all alone; Cloud makes a slip of the tongue, and corrects himself, saying, "But I'm... we're here for you, right?"
--at the Gold Saucer, Cait Sith predicts that Cloud will get what he wants (killing Sephiroth), but will lose something dear in return (Aerith)
(fastforward again)
--MOST LIKELY, Cloud goes a date with Aerith at the Gold Saucer
--in the Temple of the Ancients, Cloud tries to comfort Aerith, who is crying because Sephiroth has greatly injured Tseng
--in the Temple of the Ancients, Cait Sith predicts that Cloud and Aerith are perfect for each other
--Sephiroth briefly takes over Cloud's mind in the Temple of the Ancients, and Aerith is the one who snaps him out of it
--after Cloud gives the Black Materia to Sephiroth, Aerith is the one who comforts him, and he calls out to her

--Aerith appears to Cloud in a dream, explaining why she has to go to the City of the Ancients; as she runs off, he tries to chase her, but finds himself unable to move

Shouldn't you be smacking Cait Sith for being like "Hey, Paperdoll! Cloud and Aerith are perfect for each other LAWLZ." But if you were referring to Aerith asking how compatible she is with Cloud, I have no idea why there's anything wrong with that. And if you are referring to her asking in front of Tifa, no matter who is in the party, Aerith asks. And Tifa doesn't HAVE to be in your party during that scene.

Well said Sadhana, I can't see how it wasn't developed. It's not like this whole forum is full of idiots who suddenly thought, hey, I think that Cleris makes a good couple for no good reason! When I see how it was developed, THAT'S what makes me like the couple so much. I could list a bunch of other reasons too, but I think that it's obvious that there is development and just because you dislike a character is not a good reason to say there was no development. You can choose to ignore Aerith if you must, but don't think you got the whole picture if you do so.

I do believe the ones who created FFVII created Cloud and Aerith as a way to leave behind the cliche' of a hero sacrificing himself for the one he loved. So, according to the creators, it isn't cliche'. In fact, since this game was produced nearly 10 years ago, I would say that they are probably the ones who started the whole "angelic maiden who sacrifices herself for the good of the world" thing.

But your list reminded me of a post I once saw that claimed Aerith "only had a big role if you kept her in your party." :rolleyes: Kind of a silly thing to say about the girl who saves the world by the end of the game, IMO, and your list just proves how much non-optional interaction she gets with Cloud. Sure, she isn't required to be in your immediate party after you leave Midgar, but neither is anyone else. And even after Aerith died, her presence was still felt once you moved past the whole mako-poisoned!Cloud scenario.

I thought this moment was absolutely adorable! One of the few, if only, moments where Cloud sounds playful!

And unlike a certain optional response in Seventh Heaven, you CAN'T stop Cloud from flirting with Aerith here. :whistle2:
