Title: The Inheritance Trilogy
Description: Eragon, Eldest, and um... the other one.

This is actually a book series, but I didn't want to put this in General Chat. It wouldn't fit.
The Inheritance series is three books written by a homeschooler, who graduated at age 15. His name is Christopher Paolini, and is now 23 years old, and lives in Montana. He is extremely cute.
The Inheritance Series is a trilogy, last time I checked; the first is
Eragon(pronounced Uraghan..? I think), which is the start of a story, where this young boy named Eragon discovers a dragon egg, and is born, and given the name Saphira (pronounced Zapheera), and becomes a Dragon Rider. He dicovers new secrets about the world he lives in and about the Empire. He struggles to avenge the death of his family, battles a Shade named Durza, and discovers two new friends named Murtagh  (who I immediately fell in love with), who was the son of Morzan, an evil guy killed by Brom, and Arya(pronounced ahreeya), an elf that Eragon rescues from the Empire. He struggles to help the Varden defeat the Urgals and Kull sent by Galbatorix, the King of the Empire, an Evil Rider.
Yeah, there's alot more to it, and it's absolutely amazing. That's just the first book. The second book,
Eldest, is out in bookstores. I haven't read it yet, I just wanna discuss the plot with those who have read it.
Website is
here.

Alright! I've just noticed how many people know this book, so in an attempt to clean up the rest of the Eragon discussions going on in the What Are You Reading? thread, this thread was born.
Discuss, discuss! What do you think of the books? What about the characters in the books - Arya (canon!Sue or not?), Murtagh, and Eragon? What about the possible couple of EragonxArya? Or what are your favorite couples in the book? Do you fear for the new movie being released?
Truthfully, I love the books, although yeah, they are sorta like Tolkien's works. I remember recommending it to my mom and she loved it. She really couldn't put it down to take her sunday afternoon nap. It's your rather normal medieval-set world, except with rather handsome-sounding heroes. ::remembers that Murtagh-tearing-his-shirt-off scene with much relish::
And I fear for the movie. Eragon is a thick book - they might cut out some of the unnecessary parts that I liked. And I'm still unsure of the people playing them. I don't remember their faces.

Yes! A thread for Inheritance Trilogy!
I hooked onto the series, since a family friend bought Eragon as a late birthday present and I shall forever wub him for it.
Personally, I love Eragon and Murtagh. They're both so lovable for their own unique quirks. Murtagh is so interesting and awesome, but Eragon have an appeal to him. Also love Eragon's bond with Saphira.
As for Arya...have mixed thoughts about her. Part of it is the predicted future lover for Eragon and it sure sounds a lot like her. The other possible girl is Nasuada, but she seems interested in Murtagh.
As for couples, I'm into Roran/Katrina and Murtagh/Nasuada, yes. :D
The movie...am 50/50 on it. One, I know that Peter Pan's actor is gonna be Eragon. Two, I like Angela's actor, from how they potray her so far. Three, the changes, which I hope isn't too much.
But I'd like to see the person acting as Roran, if they EVER going to show him.(Ya know, I might as well be a Roran fangirl)

Okay, I've never read the books(will ask for them for Christmas) but I've been seeing posters of the Eragon movie, and the guy playing Eragon is definitely not Jeremy Sumpter, aka Peter Pan's actor. He's a new actor called Edward Speelers(yup, I checked, just cause I thought he was cute :giggle:)
Bloodbath - November 15, 2006 11:26 AM (GMT)
EEEPS! My sister's almost done reading Eldest! I am excited beyond words! :hyper: And I can't believe how obsessive I've been in keeping it in top condition - when I learned there was just the tiniest of holes in one of the pages I nearly died.
Edward Speelers. Sounds like an alternative to Scissorhands. SPEELERSSSSS!
And what do you guys think of Murtagh's actor? I actually feel a little disappointed - the book, Eragon states that he's tanned, but he looks a little pale to me. <.< I feel kinda confused about his handsomeness though - the only picture I've seen of him is with one of the promotional-movie pictures, and his face is too far away.
</nitpicky>

Murtagh's actor was the one who played Patroclus in Troy. I thought he was fugly then(pardon the term), and I think he just looks blah in Eragon :/
Pyra Kurai Akaidra - November 17, 2006 08:38 PM (GMT)
Am somewhat disappoint on Murtagh's actor. Where's the coolness I expect of Murtagh?
Thanks for correcting me on Eragon's actor, Kusari.
Not sure what to think of the actor for Galbatorix. We heard of him in the books, but actually heard his description yet.
...I kinda expected a beard.
Bloodbath - November 22, 2006 01:47 PM (GMT)
:lmao: A beard?! I always expected an EVAL Sephiroth-like figure. XD Minus the long hair though.
And I've finished reading Eldest! WOAH! I hope it's not really a spoiler, but I like all the new Roran chapters - especially since he was particularly lacking in the first book. I respect Eragon's cousin a lot more now. (Who's his actor anyway?) Although I don't wub him as much as I do Murtagh.
In the second book... argh. Trying not to bring in more spoilers, but Eragon and Arya disappointed me. Both of them seem a lot more arrogant (especially Eragon) in the book, especially near the end. Yargh.

Glad you enjoy the Roran chapters! I do too, since it gives me something to look forward to inbetween stuff with Eragon.*waves Roran/Katrina flag* I haven't heard of any actors for him yet, but let it be a brunette please!
As for Eragon/Arya...Eldest doesn't fully convert me into a fan, so either Paolini bring in a new gal or makes it convincing in the third book. Only other girl I can think of is Nasuada, but I like her with Murtagh.
...
And yes, I did expect a beard. Maybe I'm just expecting an all-powerful Rider with a beard to show his wisdom, but not as long as Albus Dumbledore's.

I've never read this book before nor did I even had any idea it existed! But apparantly it's so popular that they're already going to make a movie from it. I checked out the trailer...and it seems a little like they're trying to LOTR it up a bit. I'll have to reserve judgement until I read actual reviews for it.
The interesting thing is, I heard from my brother who had read one (his first and last) Cristopher Palloini book that the series is pretty controversial. Apparantly lots of people think it's a mediocre AT BEST book, and Pallioni only lucked out getting published - in all rights, as they believe, he should never have gotten his stuff out there. They bash everything from his characterization to his plot, particurly saying that he plaigarised stories like star wars! I think it's all explained in the wikipedia article on the series. Lots of people who are pissed at his success (especially considering he published the books when he was 19 and is now 22 I think) are writers who have struggled adn are still struggling to get their stuff out there, whereas apparantly Pallioni published his 'mediocre' stuff with reletive ease.
Then again he has a lot of fans that jump to his defense and label these fans as jealous. What do you guys think? Has anyone actually read the books and want to weigh in? I'm actually interested to see what all the fuss is about - should I buy (or at least borrow) the book and check it out or is it totally not worth it?
I've seen this a lot in the literary world. Sometimes there are people whoget published that you just shake your head (especially if you're a writer) and wonder why? WHY? I remember feeling that way after reading my first and LAST amelia Atwater Rhodes book (I think it was Shattered Mirror). I mean it was interesting enough for me to finish the book but...it was just so ...silly. This was another child author who wrote something pretty damn mediocre to be considered a decent publishable book. I guess I can understand why people would be pissed off at Pallioni - that is if their accusations are true.

The movie is scaring me. I haven't seen it but I've heard nasty stuff about it. Saphira's wings looks like feathers, apparently. And I've heard other stuff too. How about people who've watched the movie?
Schala - December 23, 2006 04:11 AM (GMT)
I've watched the movie and personally I thought it was good, but my brother said it was way too cliched and short. He was annoyed that the dwarves were cut. Not just that, but there wasn't much story. It was pretty much just an adventure show, nothing special. Maybe I'm biased, but I still thought it was enjoyable overall. I did wish that Eragon had been longer though.
Saphira looked good in this movie. I think that was the best part.
Pyra Kurai Akaidra - January 14, 2007 08:23 AM (GMT)
I've seen the movie.
It's good, but could be better. I enjoy the moments Eragon have with Roran (being a closet Roran fangirl I am), but annoyed they didn't show Katrina.
Saphira is pretty cool, and she's adorable as a hatchling!
Brom's potrayal is actually good, and happy with it.^-^ But not quite as much with Murtagh (NOOO) and Arya (*hit head*). I know they have to cut things out...
They're really pushing for Eragon/Arya, I know it. Particularly their last dialogue in the movie.
*PKA is just deprave of Roran and Murtagh/Nasuada*

I haven't watched the movie yet (the reviews I've read were less than pleased, but they didn't like the book either)-- but I did finished Eldest! (Quite a while ago, though, so my details are rather sketchy.)
SPOILERS FOR ELDEST (and a bit ranty)
Hmm, some things in the book really pissed me off, maybe more than they should. The relationship between Eragon and Arya, for one. I liked that Paolini recognised that Arya is light years older than Eragon, not to mention the potential awkwardness of a human/elf relationship. Then bam, after the elves' ritual, Eragon suddenly becomes... elf-like! TA-DA! I don't know WHY that pisses me off so much, except that it seemed like a way to break down at least the human/elf barrier and set up a Eragon/Arya ending. And what is age but a mere number against twu wub?
I also did not like Eragon during his battle with Murtagh. From the first book, I got the impression that they were supposed to be close (brothers-in-arms kind of closeness). Murtagh tells him about how he was forced to swear fealty to Galbatorix... And what does Eragon go? Tells him to let him be defeated. No sympathies, no consideration for the mind-rape that could've happened-- just a determination that he was right and had to win. He never gave a thought to what Murtagh might've gone through. By the end, he basically dismisses Murtagh and goes back to Roran.
Maybe I overestimated their closeness, but it seemed like Eragon should've felt something deeper. He's really plummeted in the likeability scale. Or this could just be me being protective over Murtagh.
I also found Eragon to be rather wrapped up in himself. I didn't like it when he was training with Saphira with the elven Dragon Rider (omgIforgothisname), and he cuts her off right when Saphira is trying to share what she learned. But I'm not too turned off by this-- I guess I see it as his weakness, and all characters should have flaws. I also found his advancement to be too stellar, but oh well, must be the dragon-y influence and supah special elven training.
Saphira was the best for me in this book, by far. I adored when she tried to play with the golden dragon, I sympathised when she lost it at the dragons' nest, I loved that sad realisation earlier that she had no mate, no future family. I also enjoyed Roran's chapters far more than I did reading about Eragon's lovelife and training. While Eragon is almost like a sieve, barely retaining any emotional impact from his battles (that I can remember, anyway), Roran keeps mental count of his kills and is being so severely changed by his experiences. After Murtagh, I sympathise the most with him.

I’ve finished the first book and found it quite good, considering that it was written by a teenager. Paolini has some lovely prose that actually-gasp!- keeps me interested in the lands they are travelling, as opposed to JRR Tolkien’s all-too-detailed style.( Okay LOTR is a work of genius, but sometimes the descriptions drag on so much. I liked the balance struck between dialogue and description in Eragon :) )
I see where the critics are getting at. Eragon’s plot is more than kinda-Star-Warsy. Eragon=Luke, The Empire=The Galactic Empire, Arya=Leia(only in role, not in character), Brom= Obi-Wan, Varden= Rebel Alliance, Jedi=Dragon Riders…but what the heck story still holds my interest, despite that. :P
I really liked Brom, and geek I am, ate up all the wizened speeches he gave to Eragon. And I already knew what was gonna happen to him(twas a no brainer) but I was still sad when he bit it. His replacement more than made up for it though….yup, Murtagh has made a fangirl out of me as early as the first book! :giggle: Hardened rebel, who lives by his own rules and whose hard life has given him an air of haughtiness…ahhhhh, my kinda angsty character!
I like Eragon, I do. He’s earnest, and purehearted, and sensitive; and I haven’t grown tired of that type of good-hearted hero ala Luke Skywalker. AndI love his chemistry with Saphira(that snarky dragon is actually my favorite character of all :D )
But there’s one aspect of him that bugs me… the way he waxes lyrical about Arya’s “sculpted lips” and “slanting eyebrows”, to no end :puke: Sigh, this early and I see a Mary Sue in the making….teh perfect, gorgeous elf skilled in battle and magic, charming the hero out of his wits from their first meeting. :roll eyes: One of the chapters is even called Vision of Perfection, so obviously describing her….geez I’m half-hoping Eragon’s soulmate that Angela was describing in her runes is some brave, cheerful, but decidedly imperfect lass that Eragon left back in Carvahall…but fat chance of that, eh?
So before reading this, I’ve heard some of the critics ask what makes Inheritance stand out, what is the best thing the series has going for it. For me, the unique factor in it’s mythos is the relationship between the dragons and the riders; I’ve only seen it between Eragon and Saphira, but I like the inner link between them, the soul- bond that eventually will turn both into mighty warriors. (Oh, and it helps that it reminds me of Futch and his dragon’s Bright and Black from Suikoden :giggle:)
Am guessing that another dragon egg is gonna be hatching in Eldest…*takes a peek at the book* 1000+ pages! Gadzooks! *wants to read it anyway*

Another Murtagh and Roran fan. Bwahahahaha...
Seems like another have similar views on characters like mine. Roran is well-loved, yes, Murtagh have a fanbase, HELL YEAH!
I would like to see more hints between Murtagh and Nasuada, even with the odds between them.
