Maybe it started with cannibalism. Yeah! One day a cannibal created a recipe for preparing a "Sweet Heart". It must have been really sweet at taste, and became really popular in Valentine's Day. Lovers used to prepare it for their partners (boyfriend/girlfriend/friend with benefits/four way bangers/etc...).

At some point its sweetness came to represent sweetness itself. So, a new tendency was born. Instead of addressing people as sweet, they addressed them as Sweet Hearts, and slang turned it into sweetheart.

Cloud has Cl, the same letter which cannibal starts and ends with. Cannibalism, formed with the words canniba (of can), and lism (some evil and perverted thing that I don't even know).

Cloud = C - loud = Cannibalism Loud [Cloud was bad at English grammar, but that's a given, since his native language is Nibelian (which is the same as Japanese)]. He liked his preys to scream, while he ate them. A sick bastard, indeed. Sephiroth knew it all the time. And Cloud butchered him with that Omnislash. Cloud had found a side of himself, that up to that time wasn't acknowledged by him.

Back to the Cl thing. I once heard that 20 years after AC, Cloud secretly changed his name. Using the first two letters of his name, CL, yet he changed the C for an H. His new initials now were HL, for Hannibal Lecter. Hannibal Lecter liked his Sweet Hearts.

I think this is a theory consistent enough, to be true.
