A lot of people say that who ever Cloud loves is how one interprets it and that there is no actual answer.

But I thought it was pretty much written out that Cloud did love Aeris.
Just look at the expression his face when they're reaching towards each other. And then when he goes to save Tifa, they're both dangling from a cliff about to fall to their deaths and all Cloud can think about is Aeris. Even Tifa admits right there that Cloud was in love with Aeris.

Btw, does anyone else cry at the scene where Cloud and Aeris are reaching towards each other at the end? I thinks it's the way Cloud smiles, for that one moment he just looks so happy.
