Title: Did Marlene Favor Aeris Over Tifa?

Real_Emotion - January 14, 2005 09:28 PM (GMT)
Does anyone think Marlene wanted Aeris and Cloud to be together rather than Cloud and Tifa?

In the scene after Aeris is kidnapped, there is a little scene between Marlene and Cloud.

Marlene : "Guess what? Guess what? Aerith was asking me lots of questions."
"Like what kind of person Cloud is. I bet she likes you, Cloud!"

There are two options here, one has Cloud agreeing.

Cloud: "Let's hope so!"
Marlene: "*giggles* I won't tell Tifa."

To me, it's like, Marlene was happy that Cloud hoped Aeris liked him. And she was kinda excited to tell Cloud that Aeris was asking all these questions about him. Heh... the little matchmaker... If Marlene wanted Cloud and Tifa together, that why did she say "I won't tell Tifa."

This is the other choice, the one where Cloud says he doesn't think so, the second option.

Cloud: "I don't think so."
Marlene: "IDIOT!"

I found it interesting that she called Cloud an idiot. It was like she was saying, "Of course she likes you, you dense idiot! You better like her back!!!" lol

you are wright, i noticed it too...and i noticed, when you first found marlene in ff7, in tifas seven heven, she is very shy, she did not say anything to cloud..but then, afetr aeris is kidnaped she is very excited and she is not shy anymore, she want cloud to be with aeris...and she says too: please, save aeris ( or something like this)

then, we also know that she cryes when aeris dies, and in the end she is asking for aeris...she ask " the flower girl?

and now, in ff 7 advent children notice her hear: she has a pink ribon tiyng her braid, why? beacuse aeris, waht do you think?

Does it really matter who she favors? But I did notice that even thought she didn't know Aerith for along time she was really affected my her I mean look at Marlene in Advent Children she looks like a mini Aerith.
She must really admired her. Which is no surprise Aerith has the ability to touch people's lifes even if was for a short time she was unforgettable.

aerithstrife - January 15, 2005 12:17 AM (GMT)
Yep, that is so true. Aeris did touch their lives, even if Marlene didn't knew her that long.

Real_Emotion and Daga15,
Those are great points. I also saw that too.
It sure looks to me like Marlene already wanted those two to end up together. :P
And when she called Cloud an idiot, that's exactly what I thought too.

Funny thing, Cloud can either hope that Aeris likes him, or tell Marlene that he doesn't think she likes him. He can't say anything negative about her. "I don't think so," can be interpreted as him being shy, but I don't think anyone could say he was being negative about Aeris. Just a point.

I think Marlene really did like Aeris. Not to say she didn't like Tifa, they definately had a bond as well, but Marlene felt Aeris at the end of the game. It always seemed like she felt Aeris's spiritual energy, or something. I mean, why else would she mention the "Flower Lady"?

I think her outfit in AC is just too cute, I love it!! When Loz is bearing down on her in the church, and she screams "Cloud!" for him to save her, it's exactly the same kind of thing Aeris would have done!

Marlene also remembers AERIS sacrificing herself for Marlene's safety. Aeris was captured by the TURKS because she went back for Marlene. It was really noble and brave of Aeris. All Tifa can do is worry about the people without doing anything. <_<

I'm not saying if Marlene liked Aeris better than Tifa. Marlene has known Tifa for pretty much all her life, so of course her bond with Tifa is stronger. Marlene also liked Aeris, and it's clear she idolizes her. In AC, she's practically a mini Aeris.

I'm just thinking maybe Marlene prefered or liked the idea of Cloud and Aeris being together rather than Cloud and Tifa. To me, it seems Marlene would have liked it if Cloud and Aeris got together, but that's just me.

Daga15 - January 15, 2005 11:53 PM (GMT)
! marlene liked tifa , im sure of this, after all she knew tifa better than aeris but she liked the flowergirl very much...i think she idealiced..in advent children marlene voice is heard and she said: " the person i have begining to like so much dies "...

Onigiri - January 16, 2005 04:04 PM (GMT)
I was just thinking about this! xD
But she was just a kid then, and I think she just thought it was *cute* and stuff. Maybe now that she spents so much time with Tifa again, she probably prefers cloti couple in AC.

I think that maybe,Marlene looks up to Tifa in a more 'older sister' way, rather than the 'idol' way, that she looks up to Aerith at.
But it's quite obvious she likes them both.

Children always tell the truth. They're the so-called "voice of truth". Marlene is a child... it's very unlikely for someone like her to tell a lie... so...

:P

She's telling the truth. And I think she does favor Aerith over Tifa for Cloud's sake.

I think Marlene is a tad too young to understand the love triangle. She probably knew something was up, but she wasn't really that involved. That scene is pretty much, to me, her childlike innocence on the whole thing. She thought it was cute, but didn't really understand how complex it was with everyone's emotions.

But as individuals, I think it's unfair to think she liked one more than the other. I think she liked them both very much, however, Tifa has practically been her mother even through to AC. So I think Marlene's much closer to Tifa.

Tifa did partially help Barrett in raising Marlene and there may be a big chance that she may closer to Tifa but from what I recall, Marlene was quite a precocious chlid even at the age of 4 . Didn't she take care of 7th Heaven all by herself when Tifa , Cloud and Barrett went to blow up the reactor. Other than that, she could understand why her dad had to fight eventhough they partly lived off Tifa's bartending.

Oh yea, when Aerith traded herself for Marlene's safety, I'm sure Marlene would have felt the sacrifice that Aerith did even if she was still little :) . Then there was the part where Meteor was approaching and the Lifestream was about to stop it, it was Aerith , Marlene felt and not Tifa. But still it's quite hard to tell whom she prefers as she does care for both and I think she would like to meet Aerith again as much Cloud.

To me , she was equally close to both eventhough she knew Aerith for only a short time.

Well, the part where Marlene tells Cloud that she thinks Aerith likes him is interesting. She calls him stupid if he says that he doesn't know about that. Marlene also says that she won't tell Tifa if Cloud says that he hopes so. Marlene grew quite attached to Aerith in a short amount of time, and her words do imply a preference for Cloud and Aerith to get together.

It's curious - the Cloti's often argue that Cloud didn't have enough time to fall in love with Aerith in the (supposedly) short amount of time that he knew her, yet Marlene grew very attached to Aerith in a matter of hours. Marlene was only with Aerith during the time that Aerith took her to Elmyra's house during the destruction of Sector 7, yet Marlene sensed Aerith as the Lifestream approached Meteor and cried at learning of her death. As Marlene relates the story of FFVII at the beginning of the Film Festivals, she also refers to Aerith as a person that she cared about. Marlene is also wearing a pink ribbon just like Aerith's and has her hair braided like Aerith's. It seems that Aerith has a great effect on the people she meets.

(BTW, I think Cloud had plenty of time to fall in love with Aerith - it's just interesting to note how great an affect Aerith had on Marlene after knowing her for only a few hours.)

Marlene obviously cares about Tifa, too, and Tifa has helped Barret raise Marlene. So we can't assume that Marlene would have such a preference for Aerith now, even if she had such a preference during the game. However, I agree that Marlene would be very happy to see Aerith again. Wouldn't we all?

I've wondered about this myself, I think Marlene definitely looks up to Aeris as a 'role model', but she looks up to Tifa as a 'big sister', you know? In FF7 I'm pretty sure Marlene preferred Cloud and Aeris as a couple, but she was just a kid, she might have thought that Cloud and Aeris looked 'cute' together or something. Marlene was too young to understand the whole love triangle thing, though. I think she liked CloudXAeris for the time in FF7, but I don't think she liked either Tifa or Aeris over the other. ^.^ She just liked them in different ways.

*HEH* She called him an idiot.

I don't think she still wants Cloud to be with Aerith, since well... she passed away (that sounded like Cloti talk). She might not know if Cloud still loves Aerith, since he's been closed for everyone, but in the game, the fact that she told Cloud that she wouldn't told Tifa, that Cloud hoped Aerith liked him, showed she might have found them cute.

Haha, funny... Now that I notice, 2 times people have brought up Tifa, when talking about Cloud & Aerith:
1. Marlene, in this very scene.
2. Cait Sith, when Aerith asked him to predict how compatible she and Cloud were, and after predicting Cait Sith said:
"This isn't good. I can't say it."
"Poor Tifa."
