Title: Evangelion

Sir DQ - January 9, 2005 03:13 AM (GMT)
Oddly this hasn't been done yet, so. . . .

What are your thoughts on this subject, You love it? Hate it? Never heard of it!?! I want to hear what YOU think.

~*~Shannon~*~ - January 13, 2005 04:08 AM (GMT)
I liked it! At least I liked it in the same way I liked Trigun.
I liked the first half of the series and then not so much for the second half.

The character development was pretty good.
Asuka was my favorite...
I hated Rei...

It's certainly not my favorite, but it's not my least favorite either.

I rather enjoyed the End Of Evangelion and Death & Rebirth too...
They kind of cleared up the confusing parts of the tv series.

The opening theme is one of my favorite songs to sing.
If you don't believe me, ask Sefie... she's got a copy of me singin' it...
I sound pretty darned close to the original singer according to her...

Rewrite - January 19, 2005 04:56 AM (GMT)
I like it. :P
I'm reading the manga right now, and my cousin got me Death and Rebirth.
I haven't seen much of the anime though. O__o

Fenrir_in_Flowers - January 21, 2005 10:52 PM (GMT)
I'm not too crazy about Eva overall. It's got an interesting idea, but I thought the storytelling and characterization was uneven and that everything unfurled at the conclusion. I enjoyed some of the set up from the mid-late episodes, the music, and some of the characters (Misato is my favorite.); but I think the series was deeply flawed. Death and Rebirth and End of Evangelion added to the problems that I had with the series, because I was expecting something more interesting and profound from Instrumentality/Complementarity than what I felt it delivered. It felt like the story had gotten away from Anno and certain ideas were not thought out enough. But that's only my opinion. I prefered the ambiguous original ending as a result.

It probably doesn't help that I just don't like Shinji at the end. *chuckle* I spent the movies wanting to slap him to death, which is never a good sign for my enjoyment level. It did have some lovely designs on the Evas and such to enjoy at least.

I liked the second half of Trigun better. Cowboy Bebop too. I just don't think Eva realized its potential, and for a series to garner that my hype... I expect a lot from it.

Onigiri - January 21, 2005 11:52 PM (GMT)
I saw the anime and currently waiting for the rest of the mangaa...but it's like a chapter every month(or 2 chaps a month..i forgot but quite sloow -_- ...I think like 18pg a chapter rather then those usual 40 page per chapter bi-monthly manga.)
I read that the manga is planning to end differently, and I already see a lot of differences. It seems to concentrate more on character rather then action or plot.

Sefie - January 22, 2005 03:31 AM (GMT)
*Laughs at all the mentions of Death and Rebirth* MASSACRE MASSACRE MASSACRE!!!
That was SO much fun to watch!
I prefer the manga's to the anime, mainly because of the voices(>.< ugh) and the story's changed a bit(less terrible stuff happens)

Andina - April 18, 2005 10:42 PM (GMT)
I'm doing my best to avoid reading what you others have written as I have just begun to watch the show some time ago myself.. I hate spoilers!! ^_^

But I simply have to mention that this anime is so different from the ones I have seen before and I am really falling in love with Evangelion. It's so different, much more mature in it's own with some nice humour in it as well. You can not help but to love the characters and how they interact with eachothers. It's the kind of anime that really makes you think, and think you must if you wish to understand what on earth is going on. Lovely! :)

Too bad it is apparently only 26 episodes long which means I'm already somewhere around the middle. Ah well, I suppose it's better to have a bit shorter anime where every episode is fascinating instead of what happened with DragonballZ for example (no offense to Dragonball fans) where there are hundreds and hundreds of episodes.

Anti-R - April 20, 2005 05:17 PM (GMT)
I've always love it. And always will be.

I prefer the manga story than the anime though. ^^, but I also like the series as well as the movie.

Favorite characters are the four main women: Misato, Rei, Asuka and Ritsuko. As well as Yui Ikari, despite she had very few appearances.

Materia Thief - April 25, 2005 01:35 AM (GMT)
I like the show and movie, haven't had time to read the manga though.

The movie was a bit...disturbing though.

Andina - May 5, 2005 06:29 PM (GMT)
I've been trying to find a good mp3 version of the ending theme "Fly me to the moon" but just can not find that anywhere. So frustrating!
I just wish to download that one song as I just find it so lovely. ^_^

Sure, I've managed to find different version of it by Sinatra and god knows who, but I only wish for the version they have in the anime! :P

Which version exactly are you looking for?
If you like, I could help you look for it.

Was it shown in Evangelion?

Everchanging - May 12, 2005 06:42 PM (GMT)
I fell in love with Evangelion, it was certainly special, I saw Death and Rebirth and The End of Evangelion. I done some back reading on it as well. It's different but special. There are so many lines that you can tuck away and ring out for a laugh. Though it's not funny my friend insists on calling me Shinji =(

My friend lent me the whole season of Evangelion, but I don't I don't understand some episodes. Other than that, I like the opening song :D.

Everchanging - May 12, 2005 09:03 PM (GMT)
Oh no! What were they calling you that for!! That's cruel!! Your lovely Enima!

Hmmm, I keep hearing it's got a nice opening song but....I don't know what it's called or I'd look for it.

Thanx, that's sweet of you :) :huggle: .

Well, when I was in school, I was an extra sensitive person as less than a month before i was born, my grandfather died and I guess my mom's sadness transfered to me. Other than that, a year or two after I was born, my parents found out I had leukaemia. All the therapies made my emotions even more sensitive and I cried alot.

So in school people like to see me irratated and cry so they made fun of my name and if I did or said anything wrong , they bully me. Once they even slapped me with a broom for no particular reason.

*Blink-blink... Ok... eeps...off topic...Back to original topic !!!*

For the opening song of Evangelion, I myself dunno the title but am looking for it. I really like the song :D :fangirl: . Hmm... I wonder if there are lyrics for it .

Everchanging - May 13, 2005 09:04 AM (GMT)
I'm so very sorry, I don't think I could have ever survived all of that. Sheesh people are cruel!

Well, if you ever find that song titel please tell me, I'd love to listen to it.

*shakes head* Still can't believe that...

Hey, that's all in the past now, and I guess I have to try and move on. That's what everyone tells me to do :D :huggle: .

Yeah :P and I just found the title of the song :woot: .

It's called "Zankoku Tenshi No Teze"

Everchanging - May 13, 2005 09:45 AM (GMT)
I'm very, very happy for you, believe me. Hmm?-OH!! Horrah!!-I have the song title, I'm off on my way to try and find it now. I wonder what that means in english anyway.

:D Well here's the website with the lyrics and it has the translation as well. I think you'll find it handy :).

I *love* Evangelion. Whenever I'm in an Evangelion slump I just have to rewatch the whole series and I'm in love with it again.

Asuka's my favorite. Always has been. Always will be. When I first started watching, a good 50% of why I kept watching it was because of her.

Enima - May 25, 2005 10:57 AM (GMT)
My fav. is Rei :D.

Hyper-Ballad - May 26, 2005 06:08 PM (GMT)
Ah, I love Evangelion. Definitely my favourite anime series!

As for the music, my favourite songs would have to be "Zankoku Tenshi No Teze" and "Komm, Susser Todd" (from End of Evangelion...in fact all the music in that movie is fantastic, especially the classical pieces). I absolutely love them!

I love both Asuka and Rei, because they both appeal to me and intrigue me in different ways, and for different reasons. Both of them are beautiful, wonderful characters. But at the moment, I'm leaning towards Asuka. Which is quite odd, because at first I couldn't stand her at all, and was far more drawn towards Rei. While I still think Rei is fantsastic, towards the end of the series I came to understand, appreciate and relate to Asuka's character much, much more. I really started to love her character. Oh, and the movie...I adored Asuka in the movie. I adore everything about that film, full stop. :fangirl:

Edit: This thread inspired me to ask CG for a new sig and avatar. I'm not easily influenced. Heavens, no.

Eva is my 3rd Love*KH/FFVII tie comes second, Lover comes first ^__^;;* I LOVE Kaworu*intrigiung mysterious and hands down I'll admitt I'm a total fangirl* and Shinji*I feel for him and cry when I see someone flame him;__; he's just misunderstood....* Rei,uhh she was interesting...Asuka....*Sorry I REALLY can't stand her o__o;;;;;Reminds me tooo much of my Clotifa fangirl sister.......::shudders::* Misato, Love her, she just has a intriguing personality and she's manipulative in her own way and she's HILLIROUS when Drunk X3, Gendou.....*Can't STAND him either...damn Hitler wanna be.....*

But aside from character thoughts, I Love this show*Its the ONLY thing I watch on Tv,other than G4 when its about FVII or KH* also for one other simple reason, Any theory you come up with is never right X3

Raist - March 10, 2006 11:58 AM (GMT)
Ah Evangelion. Damn, I love this anime, far more than any other I've seen. Ever since I've seen this anime other series just don't stand up for me, it's somewhat depressing.

Lady Jade recommended Sokyuu No Fafner (sp?) as I loved Evangelion. It's not dubbed, so you'll have to find a subtitled version if you wish to watch it. I saw the first episode and wasn't overly impressed, but it looks ok and people here might like it.

I thought the original end to the series was more appropriate and compelling, particularly because of the idea of instrumentality offered by the series, but I can't not love End of Evangelion. It's just so orgasmic and such a great fan service. Better than AC in that regard. However I've heard a lot of stories that the only reason the creator (forget his name) made the movie was to appease fans from whom he was beginning to receive death threats at their dissatisfaction with the end of the series. So he made End of Evangelion. A depressing and confusing masterpiece, just to jade and spite those very same fans (not to mention make some more money). I love that. :D

Considering some of the things Shinji does...I would have to say being called Shinji is worse than the other insults displayed in this topic. If you take in the whole account of that insult, well, it's pretty intense.

However, for all that Shinji is still my favourite character along with Ikari. He's just this bundled mess of emotion, confusion and reluctance who still manages to strive ahead in some cases. Regardless of his weak nature and constant setbacks to his happiness and tenure on reality, I just love that character.

Hail to Evangelion!

Oh, man, I really hate that myth.

Anno did not do EoE out of spite. Why would Gainax do that and purposely lose its fans that is their source of money? It was the original script of the last two episodes of the series. It was scrapped because of time constraints and they did something else (thus the rather confusing and psychadelic scenes). Fans didn't like it, they requested for a more material ending. Gainax see their requests in EoE, now that Anno has the time and the budget to actually produce it as a movie to be shown in Japanese theatres.

I was shocked at how bleak the ending the series concluded back in 1998. But seeing RahXephon (anime that deals with the main character's manipulation of his world the way he wanted it to be) and Ideon (where all the characters and the universe they're in were destroyed completely), I guess EVA is tame. I've yet to see Fafner, though...

Brainpowered, people who claim as EVA wannabes, actually has a happy ending. I never understand the flames towards that.

And seeing the abysmal Gundam SEED Destiny, I am happy Anno did his work according to his vision, not because EVA01 models are selling well.

Raist - March 10, 2006 04:48 PM (GMT)
Why would Gainax do that and purposely lose its fans that is their source of money?

Gainax wouldn't be bothered about the bleak ending. The original ending was bleak enough and more importantly the obvious hype surrounding the film and the fact that only a segment of the film had this bleak portrayal represents that the fans may nothave liked it. But considering the following behind the anime and that the ending wasn't so drastic as to completely pointless (it was still damn good even if bleak), Gainas never had to worry about losing money from the vision behind the film. So this really has nothing to do with Gainax.

And I just realised where I heard this. The commentary on the Death and Rebirth an EoE DVD, by the translators hired by Gainax mentioned that this was one of the main reasons behind Anno's direction in the film. I'll see if I can get his exact wording down.

I've seen Rahxephon and, frankly, I don't see it anywhere near as tormenting or disturbing as Evangelion. Evangelion's warped sense of self and desire is what makes it so unnnerving.

Anti-R - March 10, 2006 05:09 PM (GMT)
Wait till you see the RahXephon movie then. ^^; Actually, it's more of a "huh?" than a disturbing ending.

Ideon won the disturbing ending EVER for me. EVA was more merciful towards their characters.

I'm just asking why would you think Anno would do EoE just to pissed his fans off when majority of said fans liked it (I liked it, that should say something). 0.o;

I'm just asking why would you think Anno would do EoE just to pissed his fans off when majority of said fans liked it (I liked it, that should say something). 0.o;

I loved it as well. :)

But then I also loved the original ending. From what I remember of the commentary, the death threats he was receiving wanted a remade ending, which he gave them. But I also got the impression it wanted the ending to be less confusing, give answers and generally be less depressing and world ending.

So he remade the ending, and did exactly what they didn't want. It seems if he did choose to spite someone, it wasn't the entire set of fans, rather those extremist idiots who sent him death threats. I'll have to listen to the commentary again though.

OOOOOO, I saw the Rahxephon movie in a store near me recently. But I'm poor. Dammit, I'll have to see what I can do.

Ideon huh? Hmmm I'll have to check it out. Dammit Anti-R, now I have to spend more money >.<

Anti-R - March 11, 2006 04:52 AM (GMT)
We're not really sure if EoE is the ending "the audience didn't want", I never saw reports or Gainax saying that. From the TV series, I was under the impression that the world Shinji is in is no longer the same one by the time everyone else is clapping their hands in the ending.

I know Japanese fans were shocked Tomino killed off Amuro and Char in Gundam: Char's Counterattack, their two favorite characters in such a manner in the end, but it wasn't put up such a big deal. The same should be given to Evangelion.

QUOTE

Heh. Which is why I'm not updated with recent anime threads. I'd like it to spend it with anything that has a giant robot in it.

Raist - March 11, 2006 07:46 AM (GMT)
I'm trying to say that EoE is the ending that these extremist fans who were threatening Anno didn't want. From what the commentary said they wanted a more straight forward, action packed happy ending. Or at the least something that cleared up the confusion of the series.

Anno decided to give them exactly what they didn't want. I'm not talking about the entire audience of EoE, I'm talking about that very small and select group of people. But like I said, I need to watch it with the commentary again to give exact details.

Oddishness - October 30, 2006 05:14 AM (GMT)
Yes, I've been on a bit of an EVA kick lately. I'm sure everyone's noticed.

I love this anime to pieces. It's so brilliant, in my humble opinion.

I love how the Evangelion fandom is just like the FFVII fandom, right down to the squabbling shippers and all. On top of that, the Rebuild of Evangelion is coming next year, which is not unlike the Compilation of FFVII.

Let us get some discussion going. :D

(In case you're wondering- I know this post sucks. I had a big old long one typed up, but then I previewed my post and it got deleted. I was SO ANGRY. :tard: I really didn't feel like typing it all again, so I'll get around to it eventually.)

Anti-R - October 30, 2006 09:53 AM (GMT)
I really don't understand the general hatred on this series.

Well, other than Gainax's weird marketing ploys, or starting a mecha genre where giant robots can be skinny and using combat knives, an apocalyptic ending and albino quiet girls became the rage after this.

Or the psycho babble.

Anyways, uh, I love the series to death. Though I have to say I was disturbed by End of Evangelion, but got over it and loved it again (not to mention after seeing this one, http://youtube.com/watch?v=Bd8qGnmMT98, humanity turning into LCL seems a lot kinder)

The manga version is pretty good as well.

Paladin's Heart - October 30, 2006 08:41 PM (GMT)
I really like this series and how Gainax stated to be the 'antithesis of all previous robot animes'. It's very...angsty and this series made me really think alot about reality. End of Evangelion was kind of like a puzzle to me, plus I got REALLY disturbed at the beginning.

...Plus, am I the only one who didn't get the ending of both the series and EOE?

I know there's an existing thread about NGE somewhere...

EDIT: Found it! http://z8.invisionfree.com/Cloud_x_Aerith/...p?showtopic=565

I used to be so addicted to this anime!
It kind of opened my head, if you know what I mean. It was different and brilliant in it's own way.
Does anyone have any merchandaising (is that a word? sorry about my english..) of it?

I'm going to merge the two threads ^^

I still had my VHS tapes. Am setting my sights on getting DVD copies, once I have the proper funds for it. ^^;

I have the manga (some Chinese, some Japanese) and... some of its games (Super Robot Wars, and Iron Maiden).

PS. Thanks for the merge. I actually forgot there's a previous thread *is embarrassed*.

Oddishness - November 1, 2006 11:38 PM (GMT)
Dude, I freaking SCOURED these forums for an Evangelion thread. I phail.

Yeah, EoE scared me more than a little (that hospital scene STILL creeps me out. Ewww) but I just loved it. It really made me think. The concept of instrumentality reminds me a bit of the idea of the Matrix, you know? (I'm pretty sure EoE came first though....) I love the ending scene as well. Very, very powerful. I always thought that EoE came after the first ending of Evangelion, and the first one only happened in Shinji's mind....

Has anyone read Angelic Days? It's pretty cute, very simplistic, but I like it. I think it's based on Girlfriend of Steel 2. I know it's base on ONE of the Evangelion dating sim games.

I hear they're doing Rebuild of Evangelion, which are a few different movies that are a further continuation of Evangelion. They're set to be released in a year or two. It should be interesting, if nothing else. I just hope that they stay true to the nature of the original. However, Anno IS working on it, so there's a good chance that the movies will capture that same feel.

Just as an end note- I adore Asuka. Amazing, fascinating character. And funny. <333

Whoa. They're CONTINUING it? Not as a prequel or anything?

And Anno's back on the anime business, eh? Should be interesting.

Oddishness - December 3, 2006 11:17 PM (GMT)
Yup. I guess it's a prequel and a remake and a continuation. I'm not sure.

Here they have a scan from a recent article on Rebuid. It should be the second update. I don't feel like finding the scan itself...... *lazy*

I recently read the Evangelion manga and..... meh. <_< I didn't care for it too much. He did a good job with Rei's character, but everyone else became lackluster (see: Asuka). But goodness, Sadamato's artwork is SO pretty.
