Title: Friday The 13th
Description: Your thoughts.

aerisbolt - October 13, 2006 01:27 PM (GMT)
Hi there. As noted above today is Friday the 13th. Does this date freak you out at all?
Apparently accidents are much more frequent on this day and businesses loose millions of dollars because people won't travel or go out. I don't know if I would say this date freaks me out but I do try to stay cautious just in case

Does anyone have superstitons they would like to talk about or have an experience on Friday the 13th they would like to share?

Maiden - October 13, 2006 01:54 PM (GMT)
This isn't much of a thought but, today my stepdad got sent home from work, cause this guy up there got his arm chopped off. ^^'

So, I guess I do have some superstitions. :ermm:

*shudders*

Well, I am definetely an extremely superstitious person. (I am a Pagan XD so maybe that contributed to my superstition...)

My dad was born on Friday the 13th. Had you only knew him you'd understand how unlucky Friday the 13th really is.

:lmao:

So, again I do have very superstitious about Friday the 13th and ya'll all knew I had very superstitious about 666. :lmao:

Starlight Night - October 13, 2006 08:27 PM (GMT)
Strangly, this day is always good for me. I never thought of it to be a superstition, never crossed my mind about it at all. It's just always been a good day for me. I think I deserved it this week ^^

goddess_in_pink07 - October 13, 2006 08:56 PM (GMT)
I didn't know this was a special day. I knew it was Friday, but I thought it was a normal Friday. But, thats kinda cool some people believe in the superstition. Its cute. :fangirl: (yeah, I'm weird) Maybe because its October which is kinda a scary month, and 13 is an unlucky number.....

Same here. Everyone else in my familiy have a horriable day, but I don't XD

Imaginary__girl - October 13, 2006 09:25 PM (GMT)
Well, my birthday happens to be today (( ))and let me just say...IT HAS BEEN THE BEST DAY EVER. So no, I don't believe Friday the 13th is a cursed day or anything. Its been kind to me so far  . I used to be very supersticious, but I grew out of that. Watch me be jinxing myself. XD I'm going to a party tonight, so I hope nothing terrible happens to me. But I doubt it. Friday the 13th is just like any other day...well...to me at least.

Scott - October 13, 2006 09:33 PM (GMT)
I've had experience that Friday 13th is usually a very good day (My own reasons  ). And today, well, nothing bad happened, so I can count that as lucky. Oh, and Have I Got News For You started back which is one of my favourite TV shows so that's an added bonus. Now if "Lost" would just hurry up...!

And happy birthday Imaginary Girl :)

Trisse - October 13, 2006 09:52 PM (GMT)

Sefie - October 13, 2006 10:34 PM (GMT)
Bwhaha, friday the 13th in OCTOBER xD
Let's see here, this morning sucked cuz of my allergies. They're makin' my right eye really hurt so I had to switch from contacts to glasses after my first class. Other than that though, it's been really good! AND I'm goin dancing tonight in my new skirt!

Sadhana - October 13, 2006 11:54 PM (GMT)
I'm not superstitious at all, and since there are people here who are, I won't go on my tirade against superstitions. xD Really, the only bad thing about my day today is that I have to take the SATs tomorrow morning, so that damned me to not being able to go out with my friends this evening. :cray:

I like Friday the 13th because of the mythology. I think it's fun (especially since it's in October this time!).

Demos Maus - October 14, 2006 12:12 AM (GMT)
I'm not really into supersitions, but sometimes I do wonder. Today's been a good and bad day. I got a headache that wont go away (I think it was from the prep rally at school), and I was pretty much not in a good mood. But, it's okay since it's homecoming. ^^ So it's the middle with me.

Lutearina - October 14, 2006 01:03 AM (GMT)
*wore red and black for school today and pretended to be a vampire*

HAPPY FRIDAY THE THIRTEENTH OF OCTOBER!!!!!! :fangirl:

I totally love this day. I freak out everyone. :)

Especially since it's OCTOBER!

can't wait to scare everyone on All Hallow's Eve.....In my SO SCARY AERITH COSTUME. xD

Zelda - October 14, 2006 02:07 AM (GMT)
I usually don't notice Friday the 13th. It's just another day. THe only reason I marked it on my calender this time is because of Grudge 2.

Bloodbath - October 14, 2006 03:27 AM (GMT)
Yay. It's October 14.

Nothing really happened on October 13. Doesn't really freak me out, though it is kinda cool. I mostly have good days on Friday 13s. XD

Asuka - October 14, 2006 06:47 AM (GMT)
Yeah same here, alot of good things seem to come out of friday the 13th but I wish something bad would happen like the myths and stuff say (like everyone tries to kill one another etc.)

Apparently accidents are much more frequent on this day and businesses loose millions of dollars because people won't travel or go out.

For the first part, I mostly believe it's because of the mental effect knowing it's Friday the 13th has on us. The whole "if you think something bad's gonna happen, it will" deal. And the second scenario is also a result of this superstition-- not because it's Friday the 13th, but because people know it's Friday the 13th and that knowledge throws all sorts of kinks into their daily routine.

I didn't even draw the connection until Clorith invited me to watch the Death Note movie. A friend heard about it and said, "Oh, maybe it's to coincide with Friday the 13th."

Me: "Oh..." *checks calendar* "Oh yeah, it IS! Whaddya know!"
Friend: -_-

I'm so oblivious, maybe there's really some bad luck involved and I just don't notice.

Incidentally, 13 isn't an unlucky number in Chinese customs, and neither is 666 for that matter. Knowing about the 666 especially made me laugh, that all that's unlucky in the West is good in the East. But I'm really not one to criticise superstitious beliefs, as my mom tells me not to go out at night during the month of the Hungry Ghost and I follow her advice.

It's called a self-fulfilling prophecy, I believe :)

Unfortunate events? Well..this morning, just for the fun of it, my friends and I went exploring an underground cemetery, where one of my friends' ancestors are buried. And I twisted my ankle on a loose brick and had to limp all the way through the twisty passage! It still hurts!
But it's the 14th now. :)

What's a Hungry Ghost?

Lynn - October 14, 2006 08:51 AM (GMT)
It's a Chinese festival that believes that, for a month, the gates of Hell open and ghosts roam the earth. Yep. Friday the 13th has nuthin' on this baby!

I believe it's called the Hungry Ghost month. At this time, you'll usually see small shrines of candles and fruit being placed on streets randomly-- these are by families honouring their dead. My mom always warned us never to accidentally kick them over/disrespect them. She also warns us not to go out late at night, never know what you might run into~

Well, it's mostly in jest, but we both share the same principle as aerisbolt: better safe than sorry. XD

Today was an average day for me (it's September 12th, 2006 that will live on in my mind as my own personal cursed day...).

Well, I did get hit by the ~15-minute rain that fell as I was walking to work. The second I stepped outta my home without my umbrella it started drizzling a bit and stopped right before I reached my destination. That was a bit of a downer.

Real_Emotion - October 14, 2006 11:58 PM (GMT)
Hmm... I've never considered myself a superstitious person. I'll walk under ladders and opened umbrellas indoors without a care in the world. lol I've never cared for the Friday the 13th craze and I rolled my eyes when my classmates started hyping it up, yesterday. It reminded me when people started to worry when March 6, 2006 was approaching, and nothing spectacular or interesting happened. (OMG, NO APOCALYPSE!!?) Friday the 13th was just a normal day for me. Actually, it was one of the best days I've had... and I have had a lot of bad days lately... <_<

I find it interesting that days that are suppose to be unlucky, tend to be one of my best/lucky days of the year.

Sadhana - October 15, 2006 12:39 AM (GMT)
Now that the 13th has passed, I think I shall intervene with some info I learned about superstitions in my AP Psychology class.

The way that superstitions tend to work: One of the major debates among psychologists (not THE biggest as that would be nature vs nurture most likely) is human rationality vs irrationality. Our brains are magnificent specimens, and we have the power to calculate multifaced problems in our heads in an instant (ex: playing catch, seeing the ball come torwards you, being able to judge it's speed, where it will land, where you can catch it, all within a fraction of a second). However, there is also the side of humans that is rather irrational. A prominent example is the phenomenon of superstitions.

For some reason or another, humans tend to weigh anecdotes they hear from others as more convincing than extreme probabilities. When you hear a story such as, "My next door neighbor's cousin got hit by a car and died on Friday the 13th," you have the tendency to consider such evidence as more valuable than the extreme unlikelyhood that a certain day of year is evil. What are the chances that on certain days of a calender year, bad luck increases? What about societies and religions that don't follow the Christian calender? Does the Friday the 13th bad luck phenomenon not apply to them?

Additionally, superstitions get their power from people's beliefs in them. To exemplify this, allow me to revert back to the example of a hypothetical person getting hit by a car on Friday the 13th. Upon hearing this, someone who believes that Friday the 13th is bad luck will automatically use this as evidence that their superstition is true. But in comparisson with all of the people out there who were perfectly fine and even had an enjoyable day, a story of one person's unfortunate accident is what sticks out in the mind of the superstitious believer. Their mind ignores the overwhelming majority of people who had a normal day. When thinking about it rationally, what are the chances that someone in the world wouldn't get seriously hurt on any given day? It's not anymore unusual that such a thing would occur on Friday the 13th.

Oh! I had a great friday the 13th this year!
It's was my friend's birthday so we went to the mall after we dressed up crazy.
I went as "1HP songstress Yuna."
For my friend, Angel, who was born on friday the 13th this day was good for her. She's extremely lucky, she was born as a "vegetable" the doctors said, because she only had half a brain but she lived and has no deformities, she's extremely intelligent and she's teaching herself how to speak German.
So like most "occult" or "pagan" things it only has as much power as you give it.

But as for myself this day is usually a good day.

Sunkissed - October 15, 2006 08:09 PM (GMT)
I don't know about you guys but Friday the 13th is a lucky day for me. Every time it comes somthing good happens to me. For example this lastest one i got to see my brother who i only get to see once a year. My sisters baby is okay even after she rode a four wheeler like we all told her not to. ( she doesn't like to be told what to do) Plus i had a great time on a haunted trail that wasn't that scary to me. *Rolls eyes* Like a guy with a chain saw is scary and some dumb guy in a monkey suit with strob lights is scary. Cha what ever! <_<
