Title: Death Note
Description: ... whose name is written in this note..

slowerthanaverage - October 12, 2006 01:35 PM (GMT)
..shall die.. :plot:

Anyone has read this thriller/suspense manga? Featuring the crafty, dangerously droolicious Yagami Raito/Light and awkward but endearing 'L'

The anime is finally out...well first episode at least =p I must say, the OP is amazing :fangirl:
Anime site: http://www.ntv.co.jp/deathnote/
Youtube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HsaOZnwyifk

A movie is made based on the manga as well.. (haven't seen it myself though)
Movie site : http://wwws.warnerbros.co.jp/deathnote/

Hades' Daughter - October 13, 2006 02:15 PM (GMT)
Saw the first episode :)
Didn't get to meet L yet though T.T
So...do we have an actual hero in this manga/anime?
*is still confused*

I like the OP too, and the ending theme is interesting as well. I was never into the Japanese rock genre at all, but Death Note sort of changed my mind. :giggle:

Naitomea - The World

Naitomea - Alumina (Death Note ending theme)

...and the movie looks very drool-worthy as well. I'm guessing the two guys in the front are Light and L? BTW, almost all of them have their eyes closed...

MistaCloudStrife - October 13, 2006 03:14 PM (GMT)
Is it just me or does one of those guys in that Music Vid look like AC Cloud?

And as for me...

I've read Deathnote since the chapters started thier double digits... (c12 or so) Stopped reading after *spoiler* a certain per(L)son dies... */spoiler* and haven't read anymore ever since. Every now and then I feel like reading but I don't know when I'll build up enough motivation to do so. So until then the manga will be unfinished for me.

And I saw the anime when it came out just recently. First the RAW and then the ToriyamasWorld sub.(Great fansub group BTW) I love Deathnote and plan on buying all of the manga books and maybe the DVDs once everything is out in the US... It's not as long as some mangas(and the anime shouldn't be long either) so it shouldn't dent my wallet too much. At least not as much as Bleach is going to...

Asuka - October 16, 2006 07:40 AM (GMT)
I love Death Note!! I have all the Manga...we'll nearly, and I've seen the anime (well the ones on youtube anyway)

L is so cute ^^

I really wanna see the movie it looks so awsome

Yes the opening and ending pieces are <3
Hmm well we don't really have a typical "hero" in this anime..and depending on how you interpret the story and your own opinions regarding their actions, you can have different "heros" :giggle:

Well, for example I think the antagonist of Suikoden 3 game, who was somewhat trying to destroy the world, is the true "hero" @_@ ; whereas most others would think that the main character you play as is the "hero".

Oooooh MistaCloudStrife, watch your spoilers..there are people who haven't read the manga =p

Asuka, yes, L is so endearing. He's sooo interesting and kawaii *sigh*

*REVIVES!!!*

Okay, it's 3AM here and I have a final exam I haven't revised for in several hours, but I must fangirl. :tard:

Just finished reading the manga! OMG. I'd sworn to only read up to where the anime currently is, because I didn't want it to turn out like Monster, where I stopped watching the anime series because the finishing the manga had completely revealed all the plot twists for me.

But stupid Death Note cliffhangers kept making me read on and on!

*WARNING FOR MANGA ENDING SPOILERS*

Strongest impact on me right now is Light's death. A quick jump to a Death Note forum has already revealed complaints that his end was too pathetic and that it was the worst ending ever. I agree it was pathetic, but I disagree that it was the worst, because:

- Light's reaction was just... amazing. Sure, his face totally contorted in un-bishounen ways, but what can you expect? He's finally realising that he's gonna die. He's HUMAN, of course he's gonna freak out. He's managed to twist things to his advantage before, but in that warehouse, there was no way out--completely unlike when he first met Ryuk; he wasn't so obviously backed into a corner, and probably felt confident that he'd be able to turn things around.

- Poetic justice. I LIKE Light, don't get me wrong--but with the way his humanity kept slipping from him, you just knew his end was gonna be bad. Hong Kong dramas spell it out clearly: evil people meet bad ends. It was very chilling to see Light's reaction to certain deaths [that shall not be named for the sake of non-spoilage ;)] during the series, and even though part of me was rooting for me just because I liked him, I also knew his actions were just too much. I was wondering what sort of end would he face that could adequately make up for all his actions.

- Ryuk "abandoned" Light? Firstly, Ryuk had already made it abundantly clear that he wasn't taking sides. Furthermore, for Ryuk to do Light a "favour" by helping him out, I think that's one heckuva demand with the way Light sometimes treated Ryuk like crap (although I doubt Ryuk could've been won over anyway). It was a great full circle, anyway--in the end, we return to the beginning of their deal. And Ryuk was freaking SCARY in those ending panels! It strikes you that despite his apple obsession and silliness, that was a God of Death.

- Matsuda. Just another example of irony. The person who liked Light the most ended up shooting him. I'd have expected it would be Aizawa, but nope, Matsuda stepped up.

*END SPOILERS*

One thing that really annoyed me was the female characters. -_- I kept hoping Misao would return because she seemed like the only female with any functioning grey matter... and even SHE fell for Light's smooth-talking in the end! It disgusted me how Misa and Takada so easily fell for Light (his devilish charm, I guess--heck, I fell for Light, but I'm a FANGIRL! It's expected!). >_> Although I'm pretty sure that any female geniuses a la L would've been strung and quartered by the fandom as a canon!Sue.

Out of all the characters in the series, I think I pitied Yagami Sr. the most. :cray: Such a strong sense of justice! Light really did inherit his father's spirit, but sadly, it turned him into a warped crazy bastard.

I will definitely make full use of my Light and L sims when I get back now. Wahahaha<3

Desi - November 28, 2006 09:07 PM (GMT)
I read the beginning of the manga but it confused me to no end and after reading the spoilers, it doesn't shock me that it ended the way it did. Guess Thrillers aren't for me.

Lynn - November 29, 2006 01:43 AM (GMT)
I didn't find the premise confusing, but then, I watched the movie before the anime/manga (and had the benefit of a complete Death Note tutorial on the train ride back home from my friend  ).

I know everyone has their own way of enjoying a story, but for me, I think reading up spoilers beforehand for stories like these take a good chunk of punch out of it. IMHO, much of the appeal comes from being able to ask "what's gonna happen next?!?!" But I've read some posts where people still enjoy the story regardless of whether they've been spoiled or not, so I guess it's just a matter of preference.

Tsk, tsk, you rabid Luc fangirl, you! :giggle: *totally gets SWA's point*

My friend was actually raving about this to me a few days back, so I'll give it a shot. You say the manga's finished? And not so short? Sounds great, am not fond of waiting around for the volumes that will drag the story on and leave me in agony *ish lazy and impatient* How many volumes is the manga?

And that anime opening made me go "Whoaaaaa!". I have a weird fondness for dark, creepy, and "psychological" series XD

Lynn - November 29, 2006 02:39 PM (GMT)
Kusari, I covered the character's name since it might be a spoiler... Well, it's been SO long since the game came out, but... Just in case. ^^;

The manga has 108 chapters, and it's all finished. :D I believe that those chapters have been bound into 12 volumes, with a 13th volume explaining some stuff in the series. I also heard something about a Chapter 0... :shifty: NOOOO. MUST NOT SUCCUMB. Exams first, just a few more days~!

I love the opening too! I don't usually like that kind of... rock music?... much, but it really fit the opening. There might be a ton of symbolism/foreshadowing in there, but I only read about one. I shan't spoil it here since you haven't watched it yet. ;)

Bloodbath - November 29, 2006 03:20 PM (GMT)
Nyarr. My friend recommended Death Note to me (the manga) and I've been dying to read it. I dunno what it really is about though. ::hides eyes from pretty spoilers::

So... what is it about? XD

I really like the dark lyrics. Not too sure, but looking over the lyrics to the full version, it looks to me like the song had been written specifically for Death Note.

THE WORLD
Vocals: Nightmare

Within the spreading darkness, we exchanged vows of revolution
An evil flower that sprouted because it was loved
Because there's no point in letting anyone interfere
With everything that'll come about from now on

The future that the fruit told me of
The town that has forgotten reasoning
The present is distorted black
Dreams, turn into ideals

Why? Am I a broken savior?
Everyone wished for a "finale"...

Within the spreading darkness, we exchanged vows of revolution
An evil flower that sprouted because it was loved
There's no point in letting anyone interfere
With everything that'll come about from now on

Someday, I'll show you
A shining sky

Why? Am I a broken savior?
Everyone dreamt of a "paradise"...

Within the spreading darkness, we exchanged vows of revolution
An evil flower that sprouted because it was loved
There's no point in letting anyone interfere
With everything that'll come about from now on

Someday, I'll show you
A shining world

So... what is it about? XD

A notebook called the Death Note ends up in the human world, and it is picked up by Light Yagami. There are a ton of rules to that thing, but basically, a human's name that's written in the Death Note will die. Light goes on a crusade to rid the world of evil people using the Death Note. Because he's been killing criminals steadily using it, the police can't find him, so they bring in the great private detective, under the alias "L", to catch the murderer.

And from there, it's a showdown between these two... and there's more, of course.

SO GO READ IT. :tard: Then come fangirl in here!

Thanks for the lyrics, and I agree! So many parts fit too well, especially "the broken saviour". I also thought the ending was particularly fitting, from what I remember of the translation. I liked the visuals at the end where you'd see a normal Light, but in the "mirror" the blood-red sky and Ryuk are always with him.

Another thing to watch on YouTube beside Digimon Savers, Death Note anime!

Saw the poster for the live-action movie. :D Not that I'm complaining about the actors.*loves my brunettes*

DeathNote movie part 2 is out/coming out (depending on which part of the world you are hiding at)

I heard it's awesome even if it doesn't follow the manga entirely =p
Can't wait to catch it.

Kusari Yarou - December 18, 2006 04:53 AM (GMT)
I'm up to chapter 45, crap, I cannot stop reading. Practically every chapter ends with a cliffhanger, and I want to know more, more, more!

Light...I have mixed feelings about him. Okay he's gorgeous(don't pretend you didn't fall in lust at first sight, hehehe.) but I can't relate with his ideals. At first, I was willing to excuse the killing of criminals on his naivete and childish sense of right and wrong, but as I progressed and he began to kill even 'innocents', I discovered he wasn't naive. He knew exactly what he was doing, and there's a twisted megalomaniac inside of him, and the things he's very much capable of...it was scary. I do admire how extremely intelligent he is, how good he is at wriggling out of near-impossible situations...but it's all with a creepy, I-don't-like-this fascination.

But I adore L! I can't believe how easily he sees through Light's bluffs. And I know he's funny looking, but he's so awesome that about 1/8 of the way through, I began to see him as friggin' adorable, rather than weird-looking :giggle:

I really like Matsuda too...all his screw-ups are so entertaining to watch, poor guy :D

And I like Soichirou Yagami as well...extremely noble and self-sacrificing.

Misa, though, is... >.< Believe me, I try so hard to like her...but she's such a...a...Valley Girl!

Spoilers for Volume 30-ish to about Volume 45 of the manga

Yagh, evil mangaka for making Light into such a nice guy when he doesn't have his Kira memories. Already, I'm sighing over what a good person he could have been(because I know his Kira memories will come back sooner or later, and...what will become of L? ). Such a gentleman, so darn sweeeet...he even has puppy-dog eyes! :weeps for good!Light:

I haven't been keeping up with up my Death Note episodes, but I did watch the movie.

Since I haven't seen much of the anime or read the manga, I'm not sure how different the movie is, but I really liked it. I became instantly attached to L. He's so bright...and so adorable T.T

Light, I'm still not too sure I'm going to like yet.
I can't wait for part 2 of the movie though ^^

*promises herself to watch the rest of the anime*

Random squeeing...L looks so kawaii in :this scan: :fangirl: Bags under his eyes and all!

Spoilers for Chapter 58
*sobs*Waaaahhh! L was my favorite! Oh I will continue reading of course; I know Light will get what's coming to him, but I'm going to miss L's brilliant deductions, and his weird eyes, and the funny way he always shovels sweets down his throat :cray:
Mwahahahah(chapter 58 spoiler) XD

Schala - February 2, 2007 02:15 PM (GMT)
I just got sucked into Death Note! I stopped reading the manga after Volume 7 though. It's just not the same. But the movie! The movie is awesome (especially the second one which I dearly wish to watch with subtitles). L's actor looks so much like him (though probably better looking)! I'm a big L fan like everyone else. He's the most original character I've seen in a while, and he's so quirky!

Light is fine. I keep wondering if he's good or bad. After all, he doesn't use the Death Note for personal gain, not to get money or threaten people at least.

Misa... Can't say she's my favorite character, but I have a soft spot for her. Particularly after seeing how much she loves Light, though it's irritating to see her so stupidly devoted to him when he doesn't care about her at all.

The second movie is great! The anime is nice too; something else to watch other than Naruto (thank goodness the fillers are about to end!).

By the way, for those who have watched the first movie, does anyone know why L was eating potato chips at the end? It was probably a challenge to Light, a "I know you pulled a trick with the bag of potato chips" thing, but I thought he only ate sweets.

I haven't seen the movie but it may be so. After all in manga L was shown remembering that episode with chips when he got the Death Note and probably seeing through Light's trick. So it is possible, I guess.

It was definitely a challenge to Light in the movie, although you're left to wonder how L found out about the hidden camera. It's not surprising the movie writers didn't reveal it, since that potato-chip scene never occurred in the manga (Light quickly disposed of the trash bag with the camera and chips in the dumpster truck, and the bag is shown being crushed-- I don't think L ever found out about that in the manga).

My guess is that the movie's writers wanted that dramatic scene, but since they couldn't figure out a way for L to find the camera, they conveniently skipped showing it.

It's also a proclamation of L's love for Light. As you said, L only ate sweets. To bring him to eat such a salty snack... how deep is their connectio-- *is shot*

Oh, yes, that was EVIL. The worst "what could have been" scenario, makes you wonder if Light would've turned out that way if he'd never found the Death Note (but then again, he seemed like a pretty bitter person even in the few panels in the beginning...).

I just saw episode 25 of the anime. I knew it was coming, but it still hit me pretty hard. ;___;

A lot of that episode was unique to the anime though, wasn't it? I don't remember the Misa-cosplaying-a-lolita-maid-and-singing thang, or the L-drying-Raito's-feet-and-offering-a-massage thing (which could've been plucked straight out of a shonen-ai doujinshi, but I'll let it pass) being in the manga. It's okay though, because L with wet hair was adorable. :3 I was a little disspointed that they didn't include Mello and Near's brief introduction at the end. I know they were in the second opening already, but I have to wait another week for my Mello! TT__TT

Lol Deathnote kick friggin' ass!

:D My niece recommended it to me and i have been hooked every since.
Up to volume 7 myself. and i have watched all the anime shows so far up on youtube.

SPOLIER: I cried when L died.

I was like
"COME YOU FOR REAL?!"
Personally i never fancied Light. He was to crazy going with power if you asked me.

But anyhoo, the manga/anime is simply AH-MAZIN"..

Yeah I keep wondering the same thing too.
One chapter I'm all "Yay Go Light!!"
And the other chapter im just like "...ewww"
Mostly the ewws though. Lawloarz.

However, I also have a soft spot for Misa. I LOVE LOVE LOVE how cute and playful she can be. Also, its so adorable to see how devoted she is to Light.
But yes indeed, her studpidity can over come her. But then agian her heart is pure, no?

She also reminds me of my favorite charactor from Sonic the Hedgehog, Amy Rose. Hehe. They both have huge boots and shorts skirts. But they are totally not Skanks.
Gege Loves it!

And yes Thank God somthing to watch other than Naruto and Loveless!!!
Seems to be getting more and more addicting the more i watch it.

Death Note has kind of gotten me back into anime again. I was getting kind of bored with a lot of the series that I've seen lately. Death Note made me remember how much I love anime.

Even though couldn't help but support Kira, (he was so self-confident, it's kind of hard not to go along with him xD) L was my favorite character, still is. Which is why I loved the second movie, because HE was the one who sealed Kira's fate. I was never able to connect with Near the way I did with L, although I was fond of him at points. He just wasn't as endearing, I suppose. Mello though, him I LOVED. <3 I can't wait to see him next week, he's probably my second-fave, next to L. Then, probably Misa, who I can't help but adore even if she can be a ditzy doormat. Dx Naomi was pretty cool, but she had to go and marry Penber and get killed. Girl, you were so cool! WHY?!

Any pairings you guys like? Of course, just about all the pairings are pretty fanon, save a few, but still. I ship just about everyone because there was lots of interaction and everyone's so pretty. ^^;;

Mello/Matt & Mello/Near can be cute, and Matt/Misa. I'd say maybe Matsuda/Sayu, just because I like them both so much. Matsuda's another one of my favorites, thank goodness he lived through the series. ^^;;

I never even thought about the disciples thing, but it fits really well! XD And then the next episode is called "Reincarnation", so I guess it's kind of like the Resurrection? It suits the scenario, except I was under the impression that L and Near were both atheistic, or angostic at least, from things they both said. o.0;;

Back when episode 23 came out, I wasn't sure whether he would die in 24 or 25, but when I saw the preview after episode 24, with all that rain and him standing under the satellite saying "Sayonara", it was PAINFUL. ;__; They didn't even have any Shinigami rules during the commercial slides on episode 25, in his honor!! Dx

I was thinking about one day naming one of my future children after him, but it might scar them to have one letter as their first name, so I thought of making their middle initial "L" and not having an actual middle name, which could work. xD I went off on a tangent and thought about getting my last name legally changed to "Lawliet" (way cooler than my last name), and then my middle initial, so it would be "Cassandra L Lawliet." XD (Of course, I wouldn't, but it was highly amusing to think about x3) I always do that with my favorite fictional characters, but their names are usually so weird (Cloud? He'd be laughed out of school! Kidd? She'd be teased so bad! Or Sesshomaru? Dx). *sigh* I have named two of my cats though, Sirius and Tifa. It's close! =D

I bought volume 7 of the manga, because they FINALLY had it at Barnes & Noble (I only had the scanlations before), it's just so sad! I love that volume though, because it has so much of him in it (he's even on the cover =D), and Mello is introduced too. I'm getting more fond of Near, even though he's still not one of my favorites. I'll give him more time.

I totally hated Misa during some parts, but she grew on me. She can crack me up, even if she's a little annoying.
L/Misa is cute indeed! I like it much better than Light/Misa(I don't like good!Light/Misa either, sorry)But if I had to choose a DeathNote OTP...oh yesh, L/Light all the way :D Angst, fluff, hawtness, handcuffs and foot massages, oh my! 'Cmon, it's such a twisted, strange relationship, you can't NOT see a bit of romance in it..XD

I have nosebled over this pic many times, and noticed the Jesus/Mary/Sacred Heart symbolism of it, so I'm not surprised that they put Jesus symbolism in the anime. Well, L is sort of a Jesus figure if you think of it. He puts his life on the line to fight for the whole of humanity, against Kira.

EEEEH, so there's a scene like that in the anime?! I squeed so hard after seeing fanart like this and this! ! Do they show chibi!L in it?

You fangirl, you XD
You aren't alone with the naming thing...if I ever have a son, I'm set on naming him Edward Alphonse, or Alphonse Edward... :giggle: I also have a friend whose future son is gonna be named Loius Lestat
Lawliet! I saw it on Wikipedia, but never in the manga! Where do they reveal his name?

I never even thought about the disciples thing, but it fits really well! XD And then the next episode is called "Reincarnation", so I guess it's kind of like the Resurrection? It suits the scenario, except I was under the impression that L and Near were both atheistic, or angostic at least, from things they both said. o.0;;

Yeah I always assumed L was an atheist as well but if he is as smart as they all say, then he'd know all about the deciple thing.

haha If I did that with my name It'd look really odd "Lauryn L Lawliet"

....at least it sounds cool XD

Hmm...
Light/Misa bothers me to no end..
ONE-SIDED!
personally i hate all parirings having to do with Light.
I just hate him..
I used to be a huge fangirl of L/Misa but then L dies
;o;

But there still is hope!!
I get yelled at by some people acctually for saying L/Misa..
"Dude he is dead."
they say thinking that is going to change anything.
But then I reply.
"Hello duh..ever heard of CxA??"
and they reply with a
"You Necrophiliac!"

-__-;;

Anyways....
[goes to watch more OTPness.]
xDD

SIDE NOTE: Im Totally going to name my son after L. Oh well if it is only one letter? You can't deny the hotness of it. Or Mello...
Maybe Light?

Meggie - April 10, 2007 07:34 PM (GMT)
