Title: Sports

aerisbolt - October 2, 2006 02:23 PM (GMT)
Hi there. For those who do not know me I am a huge fan of sports, especially Hockey and Football(American). Both of these sports are either underway or about to start so I am very excited.

I have been watching sports since I can remember and they bring me a lot of joy. I have great memories with my dad watching football games or going to the Olympics in 96'. And now I have great memories from going to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2004. I also played tennis in High School.

Honestly I could go on for quite a while but my question is this: Is there others that have a sport they love and want to chat about them, whether you played or love being a fan? Am I all alone in my love for this subject?

Sadhana - October 2, 2006 02:48 PM (GMT)
Well, I'm hardly what you could call a sports fan. I don't play any, and I don't really watch much. The SuperBowl puts me to sleep.

But one thing that I've always been a fan of is baseball. I love baseball. No, I don't play it, but I love watching it. And being a born and raised New Yorker, I have a huge crush on the Yankees. I root for them all season long (especially when they're up against the Red Sox), and am on the edge of my seat if they're in the postseason. And you know what? Red Sox fans insist that the curse was broken when they won the world series a few years ago, but it's totally not broken. The curse still lives because the Red Sox still suck and the Yankees are still uhmazing. When they won the world series, it was just a hiccup in the curse. 1918 continues to haunt them.

My dad also watches tennis and golf, so sometimes I'll sit down with him and watch that too.

Scott - October 2, 2006 03:45 PM (GMT)
Gah, sports. One of my most disliked topics. Mostly cuz I'm terrible at every single sport, except badminton. I don't like watching it, because the main sport on TV here is Football (soccer) and I don't get the point in watching 22 men kicking a ball about for 90 minutes.

The only sport I do enjoy remotely is, as I said, badminton. I used to go play it with my brother-in-law at a leisure centre, but he always bet me :( Not been for a while though so I am a tad rusty. When it comes to watching badminton, gets rather boring really quickly.

Maiden - October 2, 2006 05:38 PM (GMT)
I'm good at Basketball and Soccer. ^_^ I'm a huge sports fan, I watch Basketball all the time, I love DUKE BLUE DEVILS :fangirl: The only sport I don't like is...Football <_< I hate it with a passion. It just really gets on my nerves, mostly because one, I can't play it, and second, if someone tackles me, then when I tackle them, it's like OVER! lol.

AmayaSaria - October 2, 2006 10:08 PM (GMT)
Oh oh oh! *raises her hand* I like sports!

I like a lot of different sports, but the ones I usually dislike are the ones I can't play. Like Golf. Its one of the few sports I dislike. Its a very peaceful game, but I can't stand the fact you don't move around a lot. I get twitchy when I don't move around a lot like that.

Also, that game requires a lot of focus, something I'm just not good at XD

I like to run alot, it helps me clear my mind. Or just relax and have fun. I've always loved running when I was little because of Sonic the Hedgehog...*giggles* What can I say, he was a big influence in my life!

I really enjoy swimming as well. Again, it really helps me clear my mind. With the feeling of just being underwater, I feel so relaxed and free.

But one of my favorite sports is definately hockey. I blame my brothers because of that. XD They've played hockey ever since I was little, which ended up being a big influence on me! I like all forms of hockey---field hockey, ice hockey, roller hockey, floor hockey, and any other kind of hockey you can think of! Its just so much fun for me.

Ahh...so many sports. I play a lot of them, I'm just really athletic and I like them a lot! Oh frisbee! I love frisbee with such a passion, so much fun.

The one thing for sports that I dislike is watching them. Unless I'm playing it or there live, they're very boring for me to watch. I just can't sit there and watch it, I have to be cheering with a crowd, or physically doing the sport in order to be content.

...well, thats all I really have to say^^ *runs away*

yin-chan - October 2, 2006 11:56 PM (GMT)
You're not alone! :hyper: I love sports too! Was an avid sports player back in 'em good ol' high school days. Sports Captain too!! :D

I mostly enjoy track and field work, I love running, mostly sprinting and cross country.
Also play netball and basketball, but I prefer basketball out of the two. I was the manager for my school's basketball team, ah, those were good days! Too bad there were no bishies on the team!!
And of course, who could forget the embarassing old days of ping-pong?! :lmao: My father would spend hours coaching me to perfect that backhand serve!

Gawd, so many of you swim! *admires* I can't swim a stroke to save my life.

Unfortunately I haven't played sports since leaving high school. *has turned into a lazy tard* :hide:
But I do a heck lot of horse-riding, jumping etc if that counts as a sport.

Trisse - October 3, 2006 12:27 AM (GMT)
OOOHHHH i LURVVVVEEE SPORTS!!! I played alot of sports back in highschool!

I love Softball! I played softball in highschool in Aussy! we were district champions !!! yay! lol i was known for having a strong arm! lol.

Oh and i looovvvveee playing basketball!!! I was in an all boys BBall team lol. Go Me!!

I was the shortest girl in my volley ball team lol. I was 5ft 8 and every one else towered over me! but like softball, i had the strongest arm!! lol!! sorry i just love sports! (I'm bragging aren't I lol and WHAT)

I also loveee Watching Rugby Union! Go the All Blacks Woot woot. I am not allowed to play rugby. My father did not like the idea of his lil girl playing such a violent game <_< lol. I guess bcoz i almost broke my ribs! lol!!! i love the game!

The game i dont like is Cricket. Nuff said.

aerisbolt - October 6, 2006 02:43 PM (GMT)
Oh yay so there are others!

Sadhana: So you like baseball? That's cool, that is one of the sports I have trouble getting into. I did enjoy it a few years ago when Mark Maguire and Sammy Sosa were going for the home run record and sometimes I watch the finals but I find myself getting bored if I just try to watch it in passing. However I did go to a live game ths year and I must say it was a lot of fun, I realy enjoyed myself. For me I think it is one of those sports I would have to be in person to really enjoy it,but at least now I understand a little better why people like it. I will say so sorry you are a Yankees fan :P
But in all seriousness they do have great tradition as a franchise.

Scott: Oh I am sorry you don't like sports that much but I think I understand, sprots can be cruel. But Badminton? That is fascinating, I am sorry to say I don't know much about that sport but I am glad there is at least something out there that you like  I am impressed you played it, if I remember anything about it it takes a lot of skill to play.

Freya: Basketball and Soccor. I enjoyed watching the World Cup when I could catch it and I like being at basketball games but I do not watch either very often I'm afraid. And you don't like football  sad day, I love the physcial aspect of football  But that's okay one of the reasons I don't watch basketball is because their sneakers squeaking drives me nuts.

AmayaSaria: YAY ANOTHER HOCKEY LOVER. We should definately chat. That is cool you are into so many sports, and again I can understand wanting to either play or be there, I get that way with Tennis. I have a hard time watching it because it just makes me want to go play. And I do think some sports are just way better in person, as I stated above. However with football I don't like missing out on the other games because there are so many teams I like so unless the game is on Monday or Sunday night I would rather stay at home on Sundays and watch the games. But it most cases I agree with being there, it is so fun to be with a loud crowd cheering on your team.

Yin-Chan: You were sports captain, congrats that is really great! I admire you for your running skills I hate to run, that is one of the reason's i liked tennis, i had something to run at or to so I wasn't concentrating on the run aspect of it  And yay for ping pong! That is so much fun, I also like air hockey.

Trisse: Rugby huh? Awesome that can be pretty brutal right? I am sad to say I haven't seen much of that sport but I am impressed with whoever can play it. And please never apologize for loving your sports, I don't, I am proud of being a sports lover and I love your enthusiasm as well. It's nice to find other people who appreciate sports like I do, sometimes I feel pretty alone since I'd rather be watching a game or spend my entertainment money on hockey games than shopping for clothes, shoes, girly things etc. Yes I said it. Heehee.

Whew I am done....for now

Badminton! :woot: I totally didn't expect to see this sport here. Baseball, yeah. Basketball, without a doubt. But badminton didn't seem to be such a popular sport outside of Asian countries.

I've tried playing it before, and sucked muchly, but I like watching badminton. I'm not entirely sure why the sport appeals to me, but my first experience watching a game live in a stadium was for the Thomas Cup. It's also one of the few sports I took the time to learn the rules for.

(I also think I might like badminton because it's one of the few sports my country is somewhat good at, and it's always more fun to watch your national sportsmen doing well than doing badly  ).

I've always hated running and jogging. My brother loves em, and I would complain to him that I got nothing to keep my mind occupied while I ran! I've found it's more fun when running in a group, though (more people to pant and complain to).

It's also just tedious when I first started off, especially after 20 YEARS of never doing it. The will to throw (or crawl) myself in front of a moving bus and DIE just to escape the exhaustion was never greater than after a run, because damned if I was one exhausted lump lying on the grass. :lmao:

It's, ah, better now, though. It starts getting better after the first few times. No, really! Now I think I can actually run to the moving bus and die with a little bit more dignity.

Kuki Prower - October 6, 2006 04:36 PM (GMT)
I mainly cannot stand sports, because of my weak and frail body that I suck and virtally cannot do ANY sport at all  Even sports where I don't really need to move my body like Table Tennis I can't do.

However, I do enjoy swimming a lot :) Whenever I'm abroad, if I'm not out sight seeing or shopping I'm down at the pool, getting a lovely tan and getting soaked by choloreane (sp?) xD I consider myself a good swimming and I usually do laps when I'm in, strangely though, I can't dive :ermm: I needs teaching.

I enjoy watching badminton and tennis though. I loathe football the same way Scott does.

What?! What are you suggesting about my beloved Yankees? :tard: It's not my fault that the best team in baseball's history happens to be my hometeam. People can insult them as much as they want, but everyone's just jealous. Don't be hatin'.

And the Red Sox still suck. That's what they get for trading Babe Ruth.

:lmao: I can't play badminton or tennis or any of that awesome stuff that requires hand-eye co-ordination. I suck! Especially badminton, I CANNOT hit the darn shuttlecock no matter how many times I valiantly swing that racket. *facepalms* You can spend hours just waiting for me to serve.

Oh that's like me! My friends hate going shopping with me because i whinge everytime they choose a 'cute top' i also dont like how they take hours to pick one frilly top or shoes lol.

Well as for rugby its awesome lol. My brother was put on suspension (from rugby) because he broke a guys ribs lol (it was his best friend!) from tackling. It was an accident of course, but this was when he was 12 years old. Which is like a million years ago lol :D :D jks!

I played rugby and bruised my ribs, i thought i had broken it! ohhh the pain lol! My dad since then banned me from playing it! lol. I dont really mind. I still play touch rugby.

I love badminton, but i cant say the same thing for tennis! i suck at that. It's so hard to friggen serve the ball. I tried using my volleyball skills but nah, it does not work!

Um I think it was pretty clear  I always try to send sympathy out when it comes to them  Some of it comes from my town and there stupid love affair with a team that is a NEW YORK team. Tampa officals actually wanted to put Tampa, home of the Yankees Spring Training or something like that. I was insulted God knows are Devil Rays suck but they are still the team that is here plus the fact with two of are other franchises(Lightning and Bucs) winning championships I think they should get consideration before the Yankees no matter what Steinbrenner has done for the town

Anyhow that is neither here nor there but I thought you deserved some part of an explination since I was ragging on your team. The other part comes with the fact they they are always in contention with that huge payroll. Normally I am for the underdog especially in baseball since the salaries of teams are so one sided. So therefore I reserve the right to dislike the team, hate is too strong a word, that would mean I would actually care alot about the sport and I am not there yet.

Oh and this is off topic so I will be brief, I see you have Cetra status..sorry if this has been with you for a while but I wanted to say congratualtions to you anyway. I think you really deserved it and I am happy for you :huggle: (And you know I was teasing about the Yankees right  Sometimes I am dense and can't tell joking from serious on here and I would hate to think I really upset you, that was not my goal. I just love to playfully banter with fans of teams I don't care for.)

Now back to the topic
yin-chan: I forgot to ask you what is netball? I do not know that term?

Trisse: I am really impressed that sounds too painful, I am too much of a wuss for that. And that is great that we are on the same page about shopping.

Lastly:
And tomorrow night is our home opener for the Lightning, I am so excited,I am really looking forward to being with the crowd and seeing our new Bolts in action officially. I recommend going to a live hockey game if at all possible it is so much fun. I think it is the funnest sport to go to live, anyhone else have an opinion on the best sport live?

Sorry I know this question is not directed towards me but...netball is kind of like basket ball, you dont bounce nor run with the ball. It's very physical. It's a girl sport, but lately boys too have joined in on the fun!

I love netball too! but i hate it when i have to wear those mini skirts for games! so annoying. EHHHH but they are good for mobility and movement on the court lol <_<

aerisbolt - October 7, 2006 07:22 PM (GMT)
Thank you Trisse! I appreciate you answering the question for me. That sounds like a lot of fun. You have to wear mini skirts? Are they like tennis skirts? I was never a fan of wearing tennis skirts probably more to the fact I am very short and do not have sexy legs than any girl power movement  But if netball is like basketball I don't know why they wouldn't let you wear shorts?

Oh, I have no problem with you disliking the Yankees. Even here, I still find the occasional Anti-Yankee fan (especially in school the day after the Red Sox eliminated the Yankees from the playoffs... what a horrible day that was). I just like to rag on the Anti-Yankees 'cause I love my team so much, and I like telling them that they only hate the yanks so much because they're jealous that they're team isn't as awesome<3.

Welcome :huggle:

And yes we have to wear mini skirts but we have tight shorts underneath lol. They are sort of like tennis skirts but yeah...lol. I have asked my coach on numerous occasions if i could wear shorts but...NO is the usual reply. I'm not a big fan of skirts altogether but once your playing the game you dont think about what your wearing!

And the reasons for wearing mini skirts instead of shorts...i dont really know. I have questioned people about that, but no one gives me a definite answer. I guess its to get more seats in the crowd heheheh to have a browse at our smeksy legs!! lol NOT <_< bcoz my legs are far from 'Woot woot' material  lol! :lmao:

aerisbolt - October 11, 2006 10:22 PM (GMT)
Trisse: You are too cute, I loved your comment about your legs haha. And yes we all know that sex sells and so there ya have it, a way to draw male fans.

Addressing Everyone Now
I wanted to comment about fans for a minute due to an experience I had at the last Lightning game I went to. On Monday the home fans started booing their own team due to the lack of offensive production on the powerplay. Now I won't go into details and bore you all with that part but I was absolutely embarrassed on how the fans were acting, calling the players pathetic, etc.

Now I know sports is for entertainment and therefore we are paying to see a product but I get so tired of fans yelling at the players for something most don't know enough about int the first place and second for being so negative in general especially so early into the season. We lost 1-0. Both goalies played outstanding and yes the offense needs to find itself but they played hard the whole time and lost a close game.

Anyway my point is that I get so tired of how fans are so fickle and boo their own team. For me the only times I would boo my own team is if I know they weren't trying and that is rare. I can think of two instances, once for the Bucs and once for the Lightning where I thought booing was justified. Honestly I think fans expect the impossible and think they know more than the players do WAY to often and it drives me insane. Doom and gloom as soon as your team looses a few games... and in hockey there are 82 games. We have played 3.

Does anyone else have thoughts on this subject? Maybe you will think I take this too personally  Well anyway I will get off the soapbox now and hope to get others takes on it.
