Title: Yuki Or Kyo Sohma?
Description: Which do you prefer?

Lutearina - September 23, 2006 03:09 AM (GMT)
Between the two main Sohmas of Fruits Basket, which do you prefer?

Yuki. YUKI, YUKI, and dare I say it again...YUKI SOHMA.

I absolutely LOVE them both to pieces, of course. xD

But I prefer Yuki. Some things people have stated are that
"Yuki is like plastic! OMG HE ONLY CARES FOR HIMSELF AND IS TEH POPULAR PERFECT GUY AND NOBODY IN REAL LIFE IS LIKE THAT!11!!! KYO HAD A MUCH HARDER PAST AND IS GOING TO HAVE HARDER STUFF1!!1!!"

Well, they are normally the ones who have only watched the anime, while we who have read the manga know that Yuki is probably one of the deepest characters of all. You can pretty much figure Kyo out after a few volumes, (not that that's bad - wuv ya, Kyonkichi :D) but Yuki...We're STILL delving in, finding new plot twists and things. Takaya-sensei keeps us guessing with dear old Yuki. And he himself stated how much he loathes that he only cares for himself, while Hatsuharu (OH HOW I LOVE HIM TOO xD) tells him that if that were true, why would he be worrying about him, and especially Tohru? In consideration to the fact that Kyo had a harder past, well, let's see...Dear old Yuki just HAD to be Akito's "favorite"....Being beaten every day, mentally tormented, and kept in that dark room....All traumatizing, ESPECIALLY for such a young child. Kyo DID INDEED go through "torture chamber time with Akito!" but he had good old SHISHOU! :D While Yuki had-Oh wait, no...No, no...Ummm...Oh, right. NO ONE. *cough* In consideration towards the future, both Yuki and Kyo will have equally challenging times...

Another very stupid comment is how much of a sissy-girly-girl Yuki is. There are too many people saying that Yuki is a he-she. Let's delve into this theory...

Yuki: Can knock Kyo ten feet in the air/through furniture with a single punch. *poor Kyon-Kyon :( He deserves it sometimes, tho'. xD*

Yuki: Forced to cross-dress for his insane fan club, willingly doing it so as not to hurt their feelings. (And he would have most likely been maimed if he hadn't. O_o)

Yuki: IS HOT. xD Yes, yes, personal thesis, but hey; Y'all can't deny that all them Sohma boys is some mighty fine goods thar, uh-huh. xD

Yuki: It's not HIS fault his gorgeous looks come from the family. Besides, he is hardly girly.

Yuki: Is extremely thoughtful, kind, benevolent, sweet, and of course, intelligent, even if he doesn't think so....xD

Yuki: Has low self-esteem enough, thank you very much. <_<

Ah, well. I'm just ranting at the cruelty of some people towards Yuki....In closing, I'd like to say what Yuki is NOT:

YUKI IS NOT A HE-SHE.

YUKI IS NOT GIRLY.

YUKI IS NOT WEAK.

YUKI IS NOT STUPID.

YUKI IS NOT SHALLOW.

YUKI IS NOT SELF-ABSORBED.

Thanks for burning your eyes out reading this!

goddess_in_pink07 - September 23, 2006 03:54 AM (GMT)
Well, your lookin at a Kyo Kyo fangirl!! To teh Max baby!! I <3<3<3 Kyo. He's soooo cute with his tempter, and he may see cold at first, but when he's a softy, I can't help but squee like a school girl. :fangirl:
And, I love cats so, ya. And, an orange cat is too cute! :lust:

I think him and Tohru are sooo flippin adorable together, sometimes the fangirlism goes to an overload... Tohru works perfectly with Kyo because she loves Kyo for who he is, and she'll always be there for him. She also really helps calm down Kyo, and make him a better person.

Imaginary__girl - September 23, 2006 04:18 AM (GMT)
*Is a Kyo fangirl*

Sorry Lute, but Kyo owns my soul. He is so hilarious. I love his little anger spurts, they make me laugh on a bad day ((like today)). Although he seems less angry in the manga ((is that just me? Or is it that he has calmed down a bit in the later volumes?)) Whatever the case, I am a Kyo fangirl. Orange hair? C'mon, teh ultimate hawtness. XD

Yuki is a great character too, don't get me wrong. Yuki just doesn't appeal to me the way Kyo does. I think its because Kyo has a more tragic past if you will, and that makes me kind of lean to him more so then Yuki. I mean, yes Yuki's mom is kind of a well...she's a meanie ((or a bitch if you will))but Kyo has had to grow up with the curse of the cat hanging over him. People staring at him, pointing and whispering, treating him as an outcast. Yuki, however, is accepted into the Sohma's. While they're all burdened with the same curse, I just think Kyo has it tougher.

((Also, not to mention him and Tohru would be the ultimate couple of lurve  ))

Lutearina - September 23, 2006 05:09 AM (GMT)
*joins in with teh clamoring Kyoru :D*

Ahahaa! I LOVE Kyoru, and actually, Yukiru as well...A....Bit. xD Not necessarily as a romance, but a more....I dunno. Different levels of love! xD

Kyo ish VERY sweet, truly, indeed. I coulda posted a whoooole thing about Kyo, too, but eh...Lute-chan ish lazy, and scared of construction workers. xD *cough* read DeviantArt journal *cough*

I'm a Yuki, Kyo, Kyoru, AND Yukiru fangirl! :fangirl: I'm a dork like that, ehe! xD

I'm just the type of person who would love a guy like Yukiiii! :D

.....

And Haru.

.....

And Kyo...

AND THEM ALL! xD

goddess_in_pink07 - September 23, 2006 05:32 AM (GMT)
Oh, oh, oh!! Anyone <3 Momiji?? OMG, CUTIE ALERT! Oh my goodness, I can't help but LURVE LURVE LURVE Momiji! And, his cute lil bunny form? Oh dear god, too effin cute!! :lust:

Lutearina - September 23, 2006 05:48 AM (GMT)
MOMIIIJIII!!!!

And for those Ouran High School Host Clubbers, Hunny is the reincarnation of Momiji. Or..Vice versa. xD

Speakin' of which, this should make you all squee:

Speakin' of Host Club...Hikaru is my favorite character. :D

Schala - September 23, 2006 02:50 PM (GMT)
Yuki! Kyo is so hot-tempered and he's rude to everyone, including Tohru (even though he tries not to be). On the other hand, Yuki is such a gentleman! Although if you ask me, Ayame is the best! :D

Lutearina - September 23, 2006 03:10 PM (GMT)
Ah! Yuki fan! :D If only Alantie was here....xD We've got freakin' Yuki obsessors in the ZeLink forum. xD

Ah, yes! AAYA. IS. FREAKING. LOVE! Especially his purple with black spots cheetah-y coat! :lmao:

Oddishness - September 23, 2006 03:33 PM (GMT)
Ayame IS the best. I had a set with him on it. Love him to peices. <33

I dunno about whether I like Yuki or Kyo better... I like them both, really. :D

But I would say that I would rather see Tohru end up with Yuki, when it comes to pairings. But again, I don't really watch the show for the sake of the pairings.

I watch it for Ayame.

Hades' Daughter - September 23, 2006 05:21 PM (GMT)
I personally prefer Kyo. What's there not to love about him, especially when his VA is teh talented Tomokazu Seki? :P

Erms...but yea, I've only seen the anime, so perhaps I don't know the full story.
Anyhow, I thought the change in Kyo throughout the anime was a bit more blantant, so I guess that left more of an impact on me. I have nothing against Yuki though. I thought he was a really nice guy, despite the two always getting into fights. :)

Lutearina - September 23, 2006 07:58 PM (GMT)
Yeah. :D In the anime, they pretty much developed Kyo, but not SO much Yuki. The way pairings go, in the manga, wellllllllll.....Let's just say I'm not all that happy. xD

I do agree with you, Oddishness, on the YukixTohru pairing....Gah! xD I like both pairings a lot, but I've been a Yukiru from the beginning....Ummm....A few years. xD So I am SO biased. *hides her biased lil face*

Another reason why I prefer Yuki is that I LOVE nice people. Kyo is EXTREMELY nice and sweet, of COURSE! :D But he has his anger and swearing tendencies, which would REALLY start to grate on me....xD

He'd get his behind whooped about fifty times a day from meh. :P

Pyra Kurai Akaidra - September 23, 2006 10:32 PM (GMT)
I like Yuki, but I love KYO!

I don't know why, but guys like Kyo always get me to love them. I just love his moments with Tohru, as well as his angrier moments.

I read the manga before the anime, which is a pity on the shortness. (It'll be a great anime series if it continues with the manga.)

I'm more of a Single Yuki gal, but tolerate the direction the manga's going for him.

Lutearina - September 24, 2006 02:08 AM (GMT)
Yuki+Single= xD No matter how many times I say it, Tohru or nothing. xDDD Oh, I just think that he has already opened himself and everything because of Tohru...GAH!

Threesome=:wub: xD

The anime is pretty odd, especially the English voices...*cough*AYAME*cough*

But the Japanese voice for Yuki....*cries*

I read the manga way before I saw the anime, and I instantaneously liked him. I just seemed to gravitate towards him...xD

slowerthanaverage - September 24, 2006 03:08 AM (GMT)
 I wubs Yuki.
I tend to have soft spots for males who are really beautiful ( ), and gentlemanly... powerful (Yuki has always been somewhat of a better fighter, and 'adored' by the head of the household wazaname) and misunderstood. Yuki fits into that sort of category perfectly.

Kyo is hella funny, I love him loads, but my heart belongs to the lovely Yuki Sohma ^^

Lutearina - September 24, 2006 04:41 AM (GMT)
*highfives STA*

Yeah....Yuki can knock Kyo way in the aiiiiiiir. Poor Kyonkichi...*wubbles Kyon-Kyon and Yun-Yun xD*

One *random* thing I'd like to point out is that Aaya said that "Akito is....An object of terror for Yuki...Moreso than anyone else of the Zodiac."

And, in the fifteenth volume, I do believe we get to see in-depth Yuki past....Which is gonna kill me. xD

No matter what, I still believe Yuki has had the hardest past. ^_^

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, though, of course!

:huggle: for all Furuba fans! :D

Athena/Fuijin - September 24, 2006 10:36 AM (GMT)
Yuki is so hawt! *drools* Too bad he's just an anime character.

Lutearina - September 24, 2006 04:30 PM (GMT)
*sniffles* It is too bad, huh. xD

Zelda - September 25, 2006 01:45 AM (GMT)
Kyo by a landslide! I like Yuki and all, but damn, Kyo is the man. In the manga, his story is just so sad, and he's such a well developed character. I can't help but luff the cat.

Alantie - October 2, 2006 05:41 PM (GMT)
*shuffles feet*

I think Tohru would be cute with either Kyo or Yuki, but I must admit, I lean towards liking Yukiru better than Kyoru. *sigh* I dunno why. I just love the quiet strength of the relationship between Yuki and Tohru. I know a lot of people say that a relationship between Tohru and Yuki would be boring, but I disagree. Plus, I must agree with you Lutey, Yuki is HAWT!!

Oh, and a side question, does anyone know of any YukixTohru shrines that are around? It would be muchly appreciated if someone could point me in the direction of one! ^_^ :huggle:

Lynn - October 2, 2006 06:33 PM (GMT)
Kyou. I've only watched the anime too, but I didn't dislike Yuki at all. He obviously had a deeper story to him than what was shown in the anime.

Still, I LOVE characters like Kyou. There's this awkwardness about them that's really adorable. Also, from watching the anime, it seemed like Tohru would end up with Yuki, and Kyou seemed a bit 'underdog'-ish. He reminded me of another old favourite, Yuuhi from Ayashi no Ceres, in that respect. (I know better now, but the Kyou-love is too deeply entrenched :P)

Although I have a couple of 'bad boy' favourites in my Fangirl List (Ouran's Kyouya taking centre stage at the moment), I find I've gravitated away mostly from the "cool" bishounen archetype that Yuki fills.

Although if you opened it up further, I'd name Shigure as my ultimate fave on the spot. :lust:

Alantie - October 2, 2006 08:49 PM (GMT)
:D I like Shigure too. He never ceases to amuse me with his antics. Plus, he too seems to have more depth to his character than seen in the anime, or in the amount of the manga I've read so far. Like, Akito seems to respect/fear Shigure, though I dunno why

Anywho, back to the whole Yuki vs Kyo thing. . . Actually, I thought the Kyo/Tohru pairing was obvious from the begining, with the whole thing of Tohru saying how much she loved cats and she wanted to be born in the 'Year of the Cat.' Lol. Maybe that was just me, but I knew at that point, that despite my best wishes and hopes, that Kyo would be the one to get together with Tohru.

I just really have a hard time seeing Yuki with anyone but Tohru. I can see Kyo with Kagura, or even Arisa. But for Yuki, I don't think anyone could be as special or as close to him as Tohru.

Heck, I love both the boys! Yuki is just my special fav. *cuddles with Yuki plushie*

Onigiri - October 3, 2006 03:21 AM (GMT)
Kyoooou~ <3
Well, I don't have anything against Yuki, and I do think his problems are pretty deep (though, more troubled doesn't mean better character), but you gotta admit...even though he's not girly, he definitly looks girly! (Hey, you can't argue against that..it says so in the manga!) And apparently that's why he's popular among the girls in the manga. Though, that's not my type... :P

Of course that's not my only reason to choose Kyo over Yuki. Kyo's just..Kyo =D

mallorn - October 8, 2006 12:27 PM (GMT)
Yuki! Both for Tohru and me! (I hate it that mostly the nice guy/gentleman/cool guy in animes and manga doesn't get the girl) :D I guess I could see Kyoru coming from a mile away, and I used to be a great Kyoru fan, but little by little, Yuki wormed himself into my heart. Well, I also used to love the manga a whole lot, but now I'm only keeping tabs on it for Yuki. :D

BTW: I can really see Kyo x Kagura and I think it would be sweet if they ever became a couple. :D

MistaCloudStrife - October 9, 2006 01:53 PM (GMT)
I'm for Kyou and Touru.

Didn't like Yuki... all male-characters portrayed as "perfect" I don't like much... It's just the way I am. I choose Mugen over Jin, Naruto over Sasuke, and Kyou over Yuki... It's just the way I am...

And just so all of you know....

*SPOILERS*

The official pairing IS Kyou and Touru. >=)

In the manga they pair off and Yuki pairs off with a girl from the student council.... ^^

And if you want more spoilers... The curse is broken and every is back to normal. Yay!

</spoilers

Alantie - October 9, 2006 02:51 PM (GMT)
I don't think Yuki was portrayed as 'perfect'. He has faults and flaws just like all the other characters, he's just better at hiding them. One of his flaws is that he does hide what he's feeling and doesn't share it with others. He looses his temper, just like Kyo does, only not so much in an explosive way.

I think most of us know what the official pairing is, we're just debating here whether or not we think that Kyo is better with Tohru than Yuki is.

He's HARDLY perfect. *cough* There iz teh spoilarz, but I shant be saying anything more! :P Unless if you highlight this right here= Sometime in the manga, Yuki's gonna go crazy and start smashin' stuff and yelling at Kyo and...He just goes off the deep end. What a troubled boy. xD

And MACHI? Oooh, Machi gets on my NERVES. The reason for her EXISTENCE IN THE MANGA IS SO SHE CAN GET TOGETHER WITH YUKI. *boring* And *pointless* Leave Yuki single! xD

:P I know why! *TEH SPOILARZ AGENz11!!! Shigure loves Aki. And, I think Aki loves Shii....But, I'm sorry, I'm not QUITE that spoiler-educated. xD I believe so, though.....Kinda.... And, yes, he does have more depth to him - he may appear all hyper and silly, but truly, he's verryyy deep...And VERRRYYY scheming. *cough*LOVEFORAKITO=DEVIOUSPAST*cough*

Yeah! And, just cause Kyoru is canon, doesn't mean we can't love it AND Yukiru! :D I love em both (Of course, I lean towards Yukiru - so subtle and perfect xD)

Of course, then there's HARU. *pwns teh world* xD In my fangirl mind of favoritism, He and Yuki keep tying for first place, and then Yuki jumps ahead. xD

Starlight Night - October 16, 2006 09:26 PM (GMT)
I'm a Yuki fangirl and I think I know why. Besides the fact that he's hott as HELL, (lol) he's sensitive and something that I tend to look for in a guy. So you could say, he's my type. And it is too bad that he's an anime character.

And I also kinda like Kyo Kyo, but not as much as Yuki. Kyo Kyo has my temper, so I guess that's why I like him. It's like him and I would get along.

I'm not going on with any more characters ^^

Alantie - October 16, 2006 10:18 PM (GMT)
Yes, sensitivity in a guy is SO hard to find.

And I agree Lute, Yuki is not perfect. I don't want to spoil myself terribly(having not read all of the manga). . . lol, but I think its only a matter of time before Yuki explodes. He's under a lot of stress, and he has a lot of pain in his life. But dang, the boy is friggen sexy!!

Starlight Night - October 17, 2006 01:30 AM (GMT)
And that's just one of the reasons why we love him. lol. He's sexy as crap! Not that crap is all that sexy, but you know what I mean. I wish there were guys like him in the world. I'm sure there are, they are just hiding.

Resha - October 20, 2006 10:40 AM (GMT)
I'm a Kyou-shoujo here!!! He brings the tad bit of Cloud, while Tohru jsut gives me teh Aerithness....I like Yuki too, I reckon he's a match for Tohru, however, Kyou is another too! Kyou won Tohru, am I right? Though I still wouldn't mind if Yuki did. ^_^

Paine - October 20, 2006 02:05 PM (GMT)
Kyo all the way! ^^

Please try to refrain from posting one-liners like these in support of a character. It's a good idea to support your decision with reasons, as that'll get discussion going. If discussion wasn't the aim of this thread, then it would've been better to just make a poll.

Rinchan - November 4, 2006 07:32 AM (GMT)
Kyo.

I like Yuki and all, but sometimes he is too emo, well Kyo is emo too but not as much as Yuki. And he has a much better reason for it. He's got the worst curse of all and his entire family rejected him and he's practically an outcast among his own people.

Yuki on the other hand, is admired by almost his entire school, hell he even has a fanclub, all the girls love him, and most of his family admires him too.

The only person that loved Kyo before Torhu came along was Kazuma, but that's only one person. Well there was Kagura, but she was a complete psycho about it and she only loved him for a selfish reason.

Alantie - November 6, 2006 03:39 PM (GMT)
Yuki has his share of problems too, just as bad, in my opinion, as Kyo's. And he has just as good reason to be emo. ( :lmao: I love that word) Being that popular puts so much pressure on you, especially when Yuki doesn't even want the popularity. And Yuki's whole thing with Akito? Yeah, that's pretty horrible, just as horrible as what Kyo went through. It was because he was so well liked and stuff that Akito singled him out for his little torture sessions. And just like Kyo, Yuki didn't have anyone to protect him- oh, wait! Kyo had Kazuma. Yuki didn't have anyone to help him. Not his brother. Not his parents. No one. He had to leave and live with Shigure to escape it. People shouldn't dismiss Yuki's troubles so easily when they are just as horrid as Kyo's.

Hades' Daughter - November 6, 2006 05:42 PM (GMT)
Don't let it bother you too much if someone else doesn't see things the same way you do. There's really no right or wrong answer here, I don't think. :)

Personally, I think Kyo's and Yuki's problems are almost the opposite. IMO, it's one thing to be annoyed and to feel some pressure because you're too popular, but it's another thing when you're disliked and picked on by just about everyone around you because your zodiac is the cat. I've only watched the anime so don't jump on me or anything. I felt the anime focused slightly more on Kyo's part of the story than Yuki's. It's not that Yuki didn't have his share of problems, but Kyo's story just touched me deeper and really stood out more to me. I think that's because I grew up with more people around me who had to deal with depression over not fitting in and being an outcast vs having an issue with being too popular. It really just depends on what appeals more to you as an individual when it comes to "which character did you like better" questions.

Since Yuki was living with Shigure though...does that still mean he didn't have anyone there to help support him?

Just quickly touching on the pairing, I like KyoXTohru.
Unlike Lynn though, I always had this feeling the two would eventually get together. I guess it's the whole thing hinted at the beginning about Tohru liking cats and having a soft spot for them.

I initially thought that scene of Tohru sympathising with the Zodiac cat and her saying the cat was her favourite was possibly a way to throw you off the Yuki/Tohru coupling so it wouldn't look so obvious.

Like the mangaka would go, "Everyone's gonna guess the Yuki/Tohru couple from the get-go, especially since they meet so early on, so here's something to throw them off-track and start up a neat little LT while I'm at it. :plot: "

You know, kinda like the whole "I know that you know that I know that you know, so I'm gonna do this-and-that..."

I actually thought that too!!! I'm like, "Sheesh, Yuki/Tohru is so obvious, they're throwing this in here to make us go off course." *sigh* Don't give me wrong, I love Kyo, and I think what he went through was pretty horrible. I just feel more drawn to Yuki. Perhaps because I too am a quite, withdrawn person and I deal with things the same way he does.

I don't really know the extent to which Shigure helps Yuki out though. I don't know if he had a hand in getting Yuki out of the main house, or whether Yuki just ran to Shigure's when he got the courage to finally leave. I've read up to 11 of the manga, so I'm not completely sure of everything that happened with that. I think though that Yuki and Kyo have suffered equally, opposite suffering, obviously, but both have been put through the ringer.

Yeah, I know what you guys mean too. They do that kind of thing pretty often in animes and movies, don't they.

I guess I just absorbed what was thrown at me and didn't really think beyond that.
I thought it was cute she seemed to have this immediate curiosity and attraction to Kyo because of the whole zodiac story. It also seemed like Tohru made more of an impact on Kyo. At least, it was more blatant to me. Of course she made an impact on all the people around her including Yuki...but I mean I really saw a change in Kyo's personality. He was always moody around everyone, but she can really soften him up like no one else can. On the other hand, Yuki was always a nice guy...so I didn't really see as much of a change in his personality even when he was around Tohru.

I like pairings where either one or both people really open the other person up, especially when you can see them really go through a change due to the impact the other person has had on his/her life. Of course, that usually demonstrates how well their personalities compliment one another and the whole "opposites attract" idea.

Yuki's loverly "Torture Time With Akito" had been happening since he was veryyy little; he only ran to Shii sometime during middle/high school, I believe. ^_^

...okay, that might be it. As I'm not a huge, huge fan of Fruits Basket, my memories of the anime aren't as clear as they should be. However, couldn't one argue from the perspective that even if Kyo had had someone there for him since he was a child...it's only fair because there were so many people who disliked him and saw him as an outcast VS Yuki who was well liked by everyone around him except Akito?
