Title: Rod Or Staff?
Description: what's the difference?

LadyNelZelpher - September 8, 2006 07:18 PM (GMT)
Hello everyone!
Well, english is not my first language, and I tried using a dictionary but I still don't understand the difference between a rod and a staff!
I've done personality quizzes about the ff-girls (yes, I am pathetic :P ) and they sometimes ask about your weapon of choice and this are 2 of the options, so I know it's not the same thing..
Some dictionaries say that they are sinonyms! :ermm:
Help me please!

Technically they're the same. XD

However, connotations would normally indicate a rod being either shorter and/or less ornate than a 'staff'. A staff is traditionally long [i.e. Yuna's staffs] versus a shorter "rod" [see--Garnet's weapon].

I see.. so what would Aerith's weapon be?

I agree there MT but I would usually consider a staff as a magical object too. Just look at Yuna (and Gandalf!). Where as a rod would just be a non-magical pole :P

I guess people have different interperitations, but I agree on the size difference thing.

I'd say a staff.

Although I agree that a rod is normally non-magical and staffs have a much higher chance of being magical, I don't think it's usually magical. Aerith's staffs are technically "non-magical," as it's the materia that empowers them and her own innate powers that enable her limit breaks, not her weapons necessarily. As well, a staff can be a walking stick.

I'm not trying to argue, but this is interesting. XD;

Lol :lmao:
Thank you so much! I think I kind of get it now..
English can be hard :P

Actually in the FFVII inst. book, I believe it says Aeris' weapon is a Rod.

And the definition for both overlap each other in alot of ways. They're basically the same thing...

It's like comparing an Orb and a Sphere.
