CAIRNS, Australia - Steve Irwin, the hugely popular Australian television personality and environmentalist known as the “Crocodile Hunter,” was killed Monday by a stingray while filming an underwater documentary on the Great Barrier Reef. He was 44.
Irwin was killed by a stingray barb to the heart on Batt Reef, off the remote resort town of Port Douglas in northeastern Queensland state, his wildlife park Australia Zoo said in a statement.
Crew members aboard Irwin’s boat, Croc One, called emergency services in the nearest city, Cairns, and administered CPR as they rushed the boat to nearby Low Isle to meet a rescue helicopter. Medical staff pronounced Irwin dead a short time later, the statement said. |

Everyone on my MSN list has put a turtle in front of their nickname in his respect.
 Unbelievable. Totally unbelievable.
Trisse - September 4, 2006 09:35 AM (GMT)
yeah i know. It all still seems unreal, i still keep thinking he is still in hospital! i just can't believe it.
daydreamer198 - September 4, 2006 09:39 AM (GMT)
They said he died instantly after being shot through the heart by a stingray poison barb. At 11:00pm, in Queensland, when I was at school doing Computer Studies........... Unbelievable....
Trisse - September 4, 2006 09:43 AM (GMT)
I know! i just found out from friends on deviantart!!
I was so shocked! i still can't believe it because, i dont know, he to me was a strong character! lol a lil childish at times but extremely cautious, that is why i find it hard to believe.
Maiden - September 4, 2006 02:15 PM (GMT)
I read about this this morning, but I really can't feel sorry for him, :ermm: cause if you deal with wild animals like that you might just get bitten, but yes I kinda do feel sorry for him, cause he did leave his wifa and daughter behind, but it was probobly the way he wanted to die though if he were to die ^_^
Crikey and RIP :huggle:
Sadhana - September 4, 2006 02:39 PM (GMT)
Oh my God, that's horrible. At least when he passed on, he was doing something he loved and enjoyed. I hope he rests in peace.
Paladin's Heart - September 4, 2006 02:47 PM (GMT)
Crickey on man! Crikey on!
I would've never believed that he would've died doing something he enjoyed...but I guess it was bound to happen sometime or another.
R.I.P
Seii Monogatari - September 4, 2006 05:14 PM (GMT)
If you watched The Crocodile Hunter, if you laughed at Steve's antics, if you can appreciate the environmental awareness that he raised across the globe, pay your respects here.
TT_____________TT *sniffle* *sniff* *sob*
EDIT: I guess Afro started one already, I'll just merge this now ...
Sadhana - September 4, 2006 05:17 PM (GMT)
I was so sad when I found out. :cray: The poor guy, just trying to help people empathize with all of the animals, whether they be snakes or crocodiles. He was obviously a good guy with a big heart. He was so young, and he had a family.
I hope his message of caring for all the creatures of the world and nurturing the environment live on after him.
xClarexStrife - September 4, 2006 05:18 PM (GMT)
Gawd i LOVED his shows.
:( R.I.P Steve Irwin :( .
He had two daughters and a wife, He didn't deserve to die x[
Stupid stingray -.-
goddess_in_pink07 - September 4, 2006 06:52 PM (GMT)
Wow! He died! Well, its just not safe being around dangerous constantly. Well, may he rest in peace. :gift: Thats kind of sad though.... he's actually dead.
kikyo_cat - September 4, 2006 09:31 PM (GMT)
I was never into the show but it's shocking...out of everything he was near he was killed by a stingray...of all things that has to be kinda embarressing...RIP
Imaginary__girl - September 4, 2006 09:33 PM (GMT)
Not even a minute ago, the news station just did a little report on him. I must admit, I didn't believe it at first. I just thought it was a joke that someone was spreading, but apparently not. This is truley a sad story...and the worst part? He had a wife and two kids...thats got to be rough. May he rest in peace.
Real_Emotion - September 4, 2006 09:51 PM (GMT)
It's truely sad to see a childhood icon die. I used to LOVE watching his shows on animal planet. I still watched a few of his other shows and documentaries from time to time. But, despite the baby incident, he was a very good man. I always admired him for his compassion for even the most dangerous animals. Some would call him a crazy idiot for all his stunts, but he was just a dedicated man who loved animals. I feel for his family...
R.I.P. Steve Irwine
You will be sorely missed...
Seii Monogatari - September 5, 2006 01:05 AM (GMT)
EVERYONE!!
From this day forth, September 4th is to be known as 'Talk Like Steve Irwin Day', i.e., you must say "Crikey!" to everyone you meet! Do it for Steve!
Lutearina - September 5, 2006 02:06 AM (GMT)
I ALREADY SAY CRIKEY! It's one of my favorite words. ^_^
Oh no...I LOVE Steve. His show was my favorite thing to watch when I was little, and I totally adored him. :( I recently (a few moths ago) started saying "crikey!" a lot, and jokingly stated I was the female crocodile hunter.
How odd that all these ironic things are happening to me lately. xD
BlackWind - September 5, 2006 07:03 PM (GMT)
I feel bad for his family, but not really for him. Call me cynical or rude, but...I think he got what was coming to him. What did you all expect, him to keep cheating death forevor? Playing in croc-filled swamps and getting to close to dangerous animals wasn't going to get him anywhere.
I know, I'm cruel for saying that...
But crikey, I'm still suprised.

*Ahem*
Steve Irwine wasn't just 'playing' around in croc-filled areas, BlackWind. He wasn't some crazy dare-devil who risked his life for the amusement of others. <_< He was a conservationist who worked most of his life for the awareness of consersation for natural habitates for the sake of animals. All the things he did, whether it may seem crazy or extremely courageous, he did it for the sake of animals and to educate people of these seemingly misunderstood animals. I think it was very rude of you to say that about a man whose enthusiam and compassion for all animals went above and beyond most people's. -_-
I feel bad for his death. Especially since he was trying to make a documentary about the coral reefs(edit: whoopsie!) stingrays. I don't think there will ever be a man so enthusiatic about the well being of animals, enough to risk his life, like Steve Irwine. I hope his work inspired others... it would be a real shame to see it go to waste.
So I'll say a good ol' 'Crikey' one last time for the Crocodile Hunter... he was a real good man.
And sorry, BlackWind, if it seems like I'm attacking you, it was unintentional. But, I just get angry when people misinterpret Steve Irwine's legacy. I had to put ten people in their place after they said similar things(he was crazy, an idiot, etc.)
aerisbolt - September 5, 2006 08:37 PM (GMT)
Real Emotion, you have already said exactly what I think and feel on this tragedy so I won't repeat I just wanted to say that I was very sad when I heard this and I feel terrible for his family, to think if that stingray had hit him anywhere else he probably would have still been here. And his poor cameraman caught his death on tape
All those times of being in danger and it ends up being a freak accident. Well thank you Steve for all your amazing work, you knew he really loved animals and his job by the way he scted and talked about animals. May he rest in peace.
i pRomiSe** - September 5, 2006 09:49 PM (GMT)
I used to LOVE watching his shows (shoot, I still do. I just never catch them). They were made of awesome. The sad part is, I heard about this from a guy on World of Warcraft. T_T Shows how much I don't go out lmao. But really, he was the coolest animal preserver guy EVAR. Of all things he had to die from, it had to be a stingray thing. Out of all the other dangerous stuff he faced, he died from a stingray thing. R.I.P, Steve Irwin, R.I.P. <3 Guys who love animals and stuff like that are fantabulous. And he shall protect them still! I KNOW HE WILL.

He didn't just interact with animals for giggles, he got up close with the animals so that the people watching the shows could learn to love them like he loved them, because you want to protect things that you love. He was admirable, and stated himself that whenever he got bit by an animal, it was his fault, not the animals. He loved those creatures more than anything, he wasn't "cheating death."

I still can't believe it. When my mother told me all I could think was, "Yeah right." But then I searched wikipedia and wiki never lies.
I'm still kind of in shock, it's hard to believe. His poor wife and daughter... rest in peace, Steve, see you soon.
Clerith-son - September 6, 2006 08:24 AM (GMT)
There goes a type of man of 1-in a million. Salutes and respects for him.
Rest in Peace, Steve Irwin.

I'm really gonna miss the Croc Hunter. He was like, a big part of my childhood, back when I watched Animal Planet everyday after I came home. I loved seeing him observe all those animals, and as crazy as it was, he was like my idol when I was young, being brave and always kind to those animals, plus making me laugh time with all the "Crikey!" going on.

I'm sorry that like, three of us are attacking you, but yeah, what you said was so RUDE. How could you just say that, even though you are speaking your mind? Didn't you stop for a moment and think some people might get upset by what you said and snap back?
He didn't do it just because he's one of those people who do crazy stunts just for the thrill and publicity of it - he was doing it so that he could inspire people to love and respect wildlife, no matter how scary or strange some animals were. He was a great person, going beyond what ordinary people would do and actually giving a shit about some of the other creatures living on this earth.
What you said about going through croc-filled swamps not letting him go anywhere was just... so off. People know the Croc Hunter more than the Australian Prime Minister, for Christ's sake! Couldn't you at least think a little before you say something like that? Why else would hundreds of people feel sorry for him?
Don't put down his death, okay? Think whatever you like, but I'm sure not a lot of people would like to hear it.
Rest in peace, Steve Irwin.

 My dad came in and told us Sunday night after he saw it on the news. I was SO heart broken, I was a big Steve fan. He was always so gentle and loving with the animals, and was so funny and adorable. I feel so terrible for poor Terry and their two kids.
BlackWind - September 6, 2006 10:44 PM (GMT)
-groans- I knew this would happen. -points finger accusingly- Attackers! Evil!
I didn't say he was crazy or stupid, jeez. I personally think he just got too close to the animals way too much. You guys are really freakin' out over what I said, and I didn't even say that much. Sorry to say, but I skipped over your posts pretty much. Its kinda a waste of time to argue over this.
All I meant was that he got too close for his own good. I know he was allowed to, but I still think he should have been more cautious.
I'm not gonna argue with you three on this, its a pointless arguement. We obviously have differant views on the matter, so big deal. I'm not gonna try and change yours, but you three seem to be trying to change mine. Not gonna work, sorry.

I don't think we're really trying to change your opinion; it's more like we're defending a poor man who died in a freak accident (trying to do something good) and has someone feeling not entirely at a great loss for his death. (Woah, that was long.) Rather, it's more like we're scolding you for being so tactless and rude to people who did appreciate and respect that poor man, and have yet to get over his loss.
And I don't care how much you say, but really, what those words mean is what really counts. It's like saying, "Go f*ck yourself" - it's so short, but the message is the most hurtful, right?
Okay? ^_^
Back on-topic:
Dude, there's been so much press coverage about his death. We just saw another report about his death and life yesterday on CNN. And they showed the clips of when he went on Jay Leno and brought a snake (can't remember...)
T_____T ::feeling sad and shocked::

Sorry to bring this back up, but I think you guys are being a little rude yourselves. I mean...not everyone loved him like you guys do. Ok, so you guys did, great, kudos to you. I'm glad he had some fans.
But everyones free to express their opinions here, aren't they? I for one, kind of agree with Blackwind. Yeah, he was a GREAT person. He helped so many animals, fought for their rights, and all that great stuff...
But the fact is, some of the stuff he did was pretty dangerous. No, I'm not saying stupid, no, just dangerous. Its a shame that someone who did so much for animals is gone...but Blackwind makes a good point, I think, you can really only tempt fate so much. NO MATTER HOW OR WHY YOU DO IT. Rather it be for thrills, or for something good, its still dangerous.
Yeah, I for one, was not a huge fan, though I am still sorry for his death, and feel horrible for his friends and family, especially his children.
Its not like Blackwind was saying he was a bad guy, nor am I. I just think its a little rude of you guys to, well, as you put it, attack her about it. She was just saying what she thought. It could have been worse, right? She could be saying, "He was such a horrible person and deserved everything he ever got!" But she wasn't.
And I know she didn't mean to make anybody upset. She probably thought this over more then you gave her credit for, and its probably not making her feel to great herself.
So lets just all be friends and let opinions be opinions?

Somehow, "He got what was coming to him," and "He deserved what he got," sound pretty damn similar to me. In fact, they sound exactly the same. I think she was being tactless. There are a lot of people who were were saddened and emotional over his death, and to come here talking about how she doesn't feel sorry for him was completely insensitive.
She even said we could call her cynical or rude, so I feel totally justified. It was unkind.
Clerith-son - September 8, 2006 05:35 AM (GMT)
I think, what BlackWind was trying to say can be explained with the old wives tale of: "If you play with fire, you might get burnt". I didn't found it to be rude at all.
Bloodbath - September 8, 2006 07:49 AM (GMT)
Let opinons be opinions - sure. I don't mind if you hate him or think his death was coming to him with all of his stunts, just don't let me hear it in an insensitive and a tactless way. Besides, when you express your opinion, you should be ready to hear what others say about what you just said. We did, didn't we? We thought she was being unkind, and we said so (our opinions, as well).
And like what Seii said, she allowed us to call her cynical and rude - we did. She gave us her permission.
Let's stop this, okay? All of us are partially in blame here. :grouphug: This thread wasn't intended to be about arguing, either. And all this talk of opinions makes my head hurt.
Kassa_Pyro - September 8, 2006 07:33 PM (GMT)
Yeah, ok, agreed. ^_^
Anywho....actually, there are some things about him that I found just amazing. The very top thing being...his relation ship with Bindy, his daughter. Me and my family were looking up different stories about the whole thing, and one of them had this whole thing about how they did this article together for fathers day...I thought that was really sweet.
YEah, I feel bad for his wife, but mostly for Bindy. I dont know about his other kid, or how old he/she is, but I know Bindy was old enough to know him and love him....but shes so young that this might be tramitzing for her. The poor kid. -shakes head-
The other thing that actually really touched me was a video I saw of him crying over a dead croc...has anyone else seen that?

 I was really sad when I found out, even though I know he did dangerous things, I never though it would one day kill him... He was always so full of life, and I will definately miss seeing him on TV.
I think that a lot of people didn't understand him, and that's why you get some rude comments about him, and it makes me sad. I'm not saying that if you're not sad you're a bad person, but I hate it when people act like he deserved it and that because he put himself in danger no one should feel bad. I feel bad for his family, and I always feel bad when I see people I don't know have died leaving behind heartbroken families. So I hope that some people will be more sensitive. Please note that this is not directed at anyone in this thread, just my thoughts on some things I've heard. *doesn't want anyone arguing with her* >_<

Oh my gosh  .... I just watched his memorial tribute.
I swore I wouldn't cry, but..... :cray: I cried!!! It was so sad, and it was so so heartbreaking, especially when his daughter went up and did her speech. She is so brave, just like her dad.
Rest in Peace, Steve Irwin. The world will miss you.
