Title: Forum Awards Discussion
Description: Deciding the Categories

Scott - August 31, 2006 03:36 PM (GMT)
*ditches the kickass font for this post*

*Steps in, clears throat*

These awards will go ahead! And I shall be organising them. Now, I may call upon people to help out with sorting nominations/votes etc and I WILL need help with graphics, but as there has already been interest with graphics, hopefully that won't be a problem.

I will write up a schedule about how things will work, what's gonna happen etc for later and shall post it as soon as it's done (hopefully later tonight).

Until then, feel free to discuss the topic further.

UPDATE:

Okay, I've searched through this thread for categories, rounded some off and left with still quite a lot. Here's the ones I still have:

Member You'd Like To Meet:
Best Screen name:
Most Promising Cleris (newbie award):
Best Topic Starter:
Funniest Member:
Most Knowledgeable on FFVII:
Most Knowledgeable on General Debate:
Best Thread in General Chat:
Best FF character cheerleader:
Best avatar:
Best sig:
Best graphics used in a post:
Yuffie's "Most Upbeat" Award
Most Likely to Stalk Cloud
Biggest Spam Games Lover
Biggest Pwner In Debates
Most Anime Obsessesed
Best heaviest poster (over 1000 (or another limit)):
Best light poster (under 1000 (or another limit)):
Best club supporter:
Best user title:
Best Female Member:
Best Male Member:

If there is a category we could get rid of, please say so.

ALSO, there have been requests elsewhere in this thread for "RP awards" etc, as I am not a reader in there, if people with ideas for an RP awards tell me, that'd be greatly appreciated and I'll add it.

If we can get this sorted out as quickly as possible, we can go straight into the nominations, but NOT YET. I think the categories could be doing with a trim, and maybe a few additions/deletions. Please give your thoughts on them.

The nomination process (once it begins) will take place over PM. The easiest way to do it would be to copy the category list and then put the name of your nomination next to the category. To avoid any "ganging up" of friends, you are only allowed to vote for the same member TWICE. This should lower any chance of friends getting together to try and steal categories (but surely that wouldn't happen here ;) ).

There will be a timeline for nominations once we're at that stage.

EVERYONE who gets nominated will go forward to the voting process. I will keep a post up to date with who is nominated so that 2 people don't vote for the same person in the same category.

The voting will take place in polls. Now, where those polls will go is still being contemplated, but we'll worry about that once the time comes :P

I hope I've made myself clear enough for you all...any questions, ask! And, please do, comment and/or discuss how things are set up right now! :)

I hope this will be fun! :D

I'm wondering about how this will work. Wouldn't this mean that everyone will be able to see who is winning / getting the most votes for each category? Wouldn't that somehow take the surprise out of things?

There wouldn't really be anyway else of doing it. Its happened that way with the contests we have had in the past and I saw no problem with it.

I think another rule should be in place, if you have voted then you MUST post in response saying WHY you voted for this member. Because then you don't have everyone voting for their friends or jsut an annoymous vote and we are left wondering why they were voted. Valid reasons should also be put down unless its a silly spam award :P

That certainly does help, though it doesn't need to be a huge explanation, we don't want the PMs getting too big that it's a task reading them all :P

And Afrononomous, the category suggestions are still open, so do suggest some ^_^ Also, if there's any categories that can be ditched, I'd like to hear them too. No point in having categories no one cares about.

As for the polls...I'm still thinking!

Yeah not too big, but I didn't mean the PMs. I meant when the topics are actually opened for voting. You should post with why you choose this person to win whatever award.

Angelalex242 - September 4, 2006 09:22 PM (GMT)
Oh, sure, there's a category for:Most likely to stalk Cloud...
But what of Aerith? :aeris:
Though perhaps I'd rather phrase that as 'Most likely to meld with Aerith's Spirit.' :winner:

Haha, you'd win that one hands down. :D

How about a nicest member, or a craziest member, or dorkiest member (in a good sense :D) award? xD Some more general ones would be nice, and I think the listed categories are all great. ^_^

Lynn - September 5, 2006 03:28 PM (GMT)
Hmm, I'll prune the list a bit instead of giving suggestions since my suggestions are all boring and lame.

I still feel that categories like "Best Fanfiction", "Best Artist", "Best Sig" don't need to be included because they can have full contests on their own. In fact, I believe we've had a contest for signature sets before. So I guess my suggestion would be to limit the categories to ones you'd never have a full competition for separately (I doubt we'll be having a "Most Like Yuffie" competition anytime soon!).

"Best Thread"-- perhaps specify a certain type of thread? Such as threads that have to do with Cleris, or General Chat threads, etc. "Best Thread" itself has waaaaay too many choices.

As for the polls, we could try working on an honour system where we hope the members don't look at the results after voting... Yeah, didn't think so.

You could try out my idea of voting via PM, but only if we can lower the number of categories. As they are right now, I'd pity Scott if he had to manually count every vote for every category made!

Kuki Prower - September 6, 2006 09:36 AM (GMT)
That's why I think an actual topic would be better. Because Scott's PM box would fill up pretty quickly considering how many members there are and they could not get there vote through.

We could just have a topic, not a poll. But then again a poll would make it so easier to count all of the votes up.

Edit: By the way, whatever happened to this?

Scott - September 6, 2006 02:58 PM (GMT)
The problem with having a thread is that people then KNOW who voted for them. These kind of things are usually private, especially since people are so close around here, people could get hurt...

My PM system works fine here, and my inbox doesn't have much in it. Every PM sent to me has gotten to me, and vice versa.

The polls though...you can see who is winning but not who voted for who. That may be the only way we can do this besdies voting through PM just as the nominations did. Not as exciting, I'm sure you'll agree.

Hades' Daughter - September 6, 2006 04:14 PM (GMT)
First off, thanks for offering to help set this contest up, Scott. We really appreciate it. :gift:

I agree with what you pointed out about having a poll or a thread system.
The PM system is a pretty good idea...only if it's not going to be too much of a hassle for you, of course.

Thank you for your kind words HD! :)

I agree the PM system sounds good (and it works from experience), I just don't think it has as much suspense as the poll option but then people know who is winning and can get their friends to vote if they're losing. The PM system isn't too much hassle, but it would certainly help if we could cut the list of categories down. Of course, requests can still come for new ones, but requests to get rid of some would be nice too ^_^;

i pRomiSe** - September 6, 2006 10:39 PM (GMT)
I lurveth the topics. =D The 'Most Likely to Stalk Cloud' pwns. 8D And because I am uncreative in every way, I have no suggestions, but you're doing a great job with this, Scott. Nice organization like woah.

Um, this may be slightly going off topic here, but am I still making the awards? I remember back in that other thread I said I would. I don't know if Lynn read it, though, because she told me to reply to her if I could and I did. XD;;;;;;; xinfinity

Scott - September 7, 2006 02:58 PM (GMT)
Well, I do need someone to make the awards, and I was intending on asking you if you were still gonna do it ;)

So yeah! If you want to, of course.

The easiest way to do it is to find one good image, roughly 150x150 and then write the award category on it. Just stick to that image for everyone like these two for example:

user posted imageuser posted image

I won those two from a Lost forum. As you can see, both are the exact same except from the category which the award goes to. It saves LOADS of time as opposed to finding seperate images for seperate awards! If you need help with the awards, you could always ask someone else to help with you. But I do ask that you don't start just yet, as I need to trim the categories down (which I shall do today).

So, if you wanna do the awards, it'd be greatly appreciated! :)

And I've been thinking of when the awards shall start. My ideal time would be Monday (for my own reasons  ) and that would be the nomination round. That could last for...a week? A bit more maybe? I'll get back to you and I will probably edit the first post regularly! :)

Sadhana - September 7, 2006 09:37 PM (GMT)
Should we leave a little bit more time to finalize suggestions for awards and such? Cause some are similar, which ones are going to be included from the original list, and has it been decided yet for sure just how the actual voting is going to work?

Ah, I'm sorry, Thena-chan! I thought it was obvious that I wanted you to do the graphics, and when you agreed, I didn't reply because I thought nothing more needed to be said.

But yes, and Scott's agreed to it too, so thanks so much for doing the winning banners! :huggle:

Hopefully Scott will trim the list down soon, and we can get this thing rolling. :D

Don't worry about which categories will be included-- a new thread should be made in the Contest section when all's been finalised. Just keep an eye out for the announcement!

:o Wow, you still remember it! :glomp:

Yeah, I ended up going MIA around the time the poll closed, due to moving to university and such. A lot of the other staff were pretty busy too, so I believe no one had the time to take charge of this. Perhaps we'll try to get that contest going after this one's finished (provided anyone's still interested! ).

Well, here's the problem. I won't be online Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday next week, so I kinda wanted it to start before then, otherwise we'll have to wait til Friday to get things off the road. If no one has a problem with that, then I'll wait, but I'm one of those people who can't sit still ;) I did trim down the categories yesterday night a little bit. Check the first post to see what's left. Remember, suggestions welcome :)

I think the second round voting will take place in polls. People can see it, yeah, but if there's any scheming to sway polls, I will not be a happy bunny :D

I don't really think "Most Popular" should be a category. It can be really disappointing to not be included and even than, it's just a popularity contest, which is no fun. :[

And uh, I don't believe we should be encouraging people to use so many smilies. >__>;

Scott - September 9, 2006 11:23 PM (GMT)
Most Friendly and most popular could be taken offensivley by some people if they don't get a nomination.

And, uh, it's a maximum of 5 smilies per post. So anyone who does that can get an award ;)

As for the sig one, I was kinda thinking of leaving sigs out as someone mentioned that they have contests for them, so there's no point in having duplicate awards.

Most Promising Cleris: A new member, and yet makes very interesting, insightful posts about Cleris
Best Topic Starter: Starts the most brilliant and unique topics that gets everybody posting.

Well, I won't be active again til Friday. Keep posting in here and I'll check all the nomination suggestions and other suggestions once I'm back. Hopefully we'll be able to start them soon after I return, cuz this should be fun.

See ya'll, have fun suggesting stuff ;)

Angelalex242 - September 11, 2006 11:47 AM (GMT)
All I say is:

If Cloud get a stalker thread, Aerith should get one too. There ARE a few guys in these forums...

Amathala - September 11, 2006 04:51 PM (GMT)
Also, I wanted to add, if there's ANYONE who does not wish to be nominated, you should probably say it here. You dont have to have a big reason why, or even an explanation, but it'll save Scott some time if you just wish to watch.

I'm putting my name in there right now. I dont want to be nominated for anything because I'm a sore loser :P and I like to avoid hurting people, even if it's unintentional and this is just for fun.

Trisse - September 14, 2006 08:08 AM (GMT)
ummmm you know how some people like to sketch and do lineart for fanart and dont like to colour and some like to go all out eh?!?!? maybe you can branch of the fanart category to.... i dunno ummm......

Tradtional media and Digital medias used?!?!?!

EDIT: I just realised that the idea/suggestion that i made might be abit too complicated to do.

Angelalex242 - September 15, 2006 10:24 AM (GMT)
Another category:

Most likely to achieve Cetra status.

Perhaps the winner of this category would be set Cetra after winning it.

Scott - September 15, 2006 10:36 AM (GMT)
Well, I'm BACK! And I'm glad to see people still interested...

Amathala has a good point, if anyone doesn't want to be involved in this, just say so and if anyone nominates you (though they shouldn't if they read this thread!), I'll not count it.

Afrononomous, I think we were gonna try and keep fanart-y stuff out this, like graphics and fanfiction because there are seperate awards for that.

Angelalex, I like that category, BUT I would like to have a mod's approval before putting that in, for obvious reasons. But if it gets the go-ahead, it'll be included.

And I'm gonna set dates now...Nominating will begin on Sunday. I'll update the first post to set things out better etc by that time, then all you need to do is copy and paste the finalised categories into a PM and send them to me, with a small explanation of why you chose that person for their category etc.

And also, voting...it'll be in polls. The only problem now is where do we put the polls ;) I've decided on polls (finally :P ) because they're simple enough to use, and it will DEFINETLY be private. It'd also save me reading loads of PMs again

Any problems with the above ^^^^, ask away.

Also, category suggestions still open, though I'm not that sure there are many left.

Sadhana - September 15, 2006 10:12 PM (GMT)
First of all, I just want to thanks to Scott for doing such a great job! If it weren't for people as organized as you, this never would've gotten done. And I think the Forum Awards are going to be great. ^_^

What about a Most Unique Award? And about the Best Graphics Used in a Post Award, is that going to specifically apply to graphics that aren't sigs/avatars? Cause that seems a little too specific, and might involve people having to look back through a myriad of posts looking to see who used a good graphic in a post.

[Edit]: Oh, and one question: Is it just going to be one winner per category? No second and third places? Cause it might get messy with multiple winners per category.

Scott - September 15, 2006 10:31 PM (GMT)
Thanks for your kind words Sadhana! :)

Best graphics used in a post would be when people refer to using graphics to show something, not related to sigs or avatars. The Sims 2 thread in spam would be an example, as they have good images there and they're pretty amusing. But, there may be a lack of threads for this category. I'll have a think 'bout it.

Winners...well, in an ideal manner, there'll be one winner per category. But it's possible that the votes may tie and there will be two. We can just hope that won't happen, but if it does, both of them will be considered winners.

And also, I don't want to have too many categories because there are graphics being made for these awards and we don't want to make i pRomiSe work too hard!

Nina - September 15, 2006 10:42 PM (GMT)
I was wondering ... how many nominees per category? ^^;;

Scott - September 15, 2006 10:59 PM (GMT)
Well, preferably, one nominee for each category per person. But if you REALLY can't decide, and you give good reasons for both, I'll add them both to the voting round. I don't think it's that important, but, y'know, just keeps my work down :P

So try to keep it to one, but if you have to go over the limit, I won't bite your head off.

As soon as YOU vote for who you want in the voting round, they're there. No questions asked. I'll be updating the first post with who has been nominated so that you do not nominate someone who is already there, since this is a wasted nomination, gettit?

Sadhana - September 15, 2006 11:16 PM (GMT)
I think she meant how many nominees will there be per category? Five people nominated for say, "Best Heavy Poster." How many nominees for each award?

[Edit]: Oh wait... maybe you answered your question. Okay, I think I'm just dumb today. :ow:

Scott - September 15, 2006 11:22 PM (GMT)
Oooohhhh! Well, I'll answer that too while it's here.

There's no limit, if it happens to stretch the number of options a poll can have, we'll just have 2 polls. I've saw it before, though it rarely happens. On popular categories it can go up to about 3 polls, though this was on a LARGE site, so there shouldn't be such a problem here.

Materia Thief - September 15, 2006 11:44 PM (GMT)

Another category:

Perhaps the winner of this category would be set Cetra after winning it.

Although I think that category is essentially a good idea, I also disagree with it. It's nice to be recognized as a "possible Cetra," but if the person is promised Cetra-dom, there's no guarentee it's entirely deserved. I'm not trying to say that, "HEY. ALL OF j00 ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH," just that to be chosen as a Cetra by the staff and existing Cetra is an honor in its own right and not a popularity contest of any sorts, as this may turn out to be.

But that's just my opinion on it, I guess.

And this looks like it'll be turning out good! I'm sorry, I don't quite have anything to suggest, although if we have awards patterned after Yuffie, why not Cid or Barrett? XD

Lynn - September 16, 2006 04:26 AM (GMT)
I agree with MT about the Cetra category. I personally feel it would border too much on being a popularity poll, and there might be complications in the end. I'd vote on leaving that out of the contest.

And yes, thank you Scott for being so organised! :huggle: When you're ready to make your announcements, go ahead and bump the thread if you have to (in moderate amounts, of course :P), as updating the first post doesn't bump it.

Scott - September 16, 2006 01:23 PM (GMT)
Well, that's the Cetra category scratched off the list.

And I'm not always this organised, the awards haven't began yet ;)

I don't know if I'll need to bump the thread really, since this forum doesn't get a lot of posts, so it should stay near the top. Maybe rename the thread though ^_^

goddess_in_pink07 - September 20, 2006 06:46 PM (GMT)
question, how long will the voting process take? I mean, how long will you be free to take votes???

Scott - September 20, 2006 08:10 PM (GMT)
Um...lets say I shall stop taking nominations NEXT Friday. That's Friday 29th September. After that, no more nominations then I'll set up the polls.

Also, I'm glad you bumped this as we're in need of a graphics maker for the awards. Any takers?
