Title: Rescue Mission Pattern

UsagiMamoru - July 17, 2006 12:26 AM (GMT)
Alright, it's been a long time since I played Final Fantasy, I now love soap operas and teen dramas with couples that are dating and in a relationship and boyfriend/girlfriend in the series with lots of kissing scenes, couples that are in long-term relationships and are dating for a long time and are together during the beginning of the series and get together early on and it shows them dating and in a relationship during the series. I love that. So, my memory of Final Fantasy may not be as accurate as it used to be, since now I love soap operas and teen drama series with couples that are dating and in real relationships.

Anyway, if recalled right, in every Final Fantasy from 2/4 to 10 there has been a rescue. While there were many rescues, there was always a special rescue, one that was bigger than others. It involved breaking into an area and the hero rescuing his girlfriend. Each rescue involved breaking into a location that they weren't supposed to be in.

In FFIV, Rosa in the Tower of Babel.

In FFV, Reina in the beginning.

In FFVI, Celes in the prison.

In FFVII, Aeris in the shinra building.

In FFVIII, Rinoa in the Sorceress Memorial.

In FFIX, Garnet, Dagger in Alexandria Castle.

In FFX, Yuna in Bevelle.

Hm. Wow, that's an interesting pattern, Usagi! Good find!

I seriously have nothing to add to your great explanation. I just find it really fascinating how all these girls always get recued by the hero, even in minor problems... and then it turns into some kind of special connection. I think this reveals how alarmed the heroes are of their love interest and their urges to save them and make sure they're unharmed. Aw. It's so cute. It's usually what they care about the most, actually! (...hehe...) Ah, the love.

Of course, if you use this in a debate, I'm sure someone's going to bring up the HoneyBee Inn and rescuing Tifa...but even then, that was more hilarious and entertaining than anything else, and Aerith is heavily involved with that rescue.

...and there really was no romantic reunion, was there?

Hmm--you may still have a point. After all, Cloud and co. went in fully expecting to fight, but trying to put it off until last minute and with 'rescuing Tifa' (is it really a rescue if Tifa went willingly?), there was less of a serious attitude because they were just gonna shake some slimeball for info.

Eh, I'll think more on it, but that's a pretty interesting pattern to spot.

Cloud&Aerith - August 13, 2007 02:02 PM (GMT)
I didn't notice the pattern till now. Anyway if ever someone would brought up the topic about Cloud rescuing Tifa, I think it wasn't a serious rescue mission, I don't mean that Cloud is not serious about rescuing Tifa I mean When Aerith was captured Cloud really panicked and they were like breaking in without hesitation or without thinking the consequences unlike when he(with Aerith) rescued Tifa, Cloud and Aerith did many things before they went into the mansion and they didn't broke in, they snuck inside the mansion. Does anyone agree? or I'm just hallucinating. But I definitely believe in my theory.

Well, when Cloud and Aerith were sitting in the park and saw Tifa leave, it was actually Aerith's idea to go after her in the first place. Not only that, but it was also Aerith who suggested that the both of them to go inside the Don's to look for her. Their initial idea had been for Aerith to go in alone. Meh, if anything, I'd say Aerith rescued Tifa. :P

As for the Aerith rescue, that was Cloud's doing. He went after her without inviting Barret and Tifa. They both pretty much just tagged after him. I found the nature of Cloud and Aerith's reunion more romantic too.

Yeah ... Aerith was the one who suggested they go after Tifa because she said it was dangerous for a girl to be alone in that part of town. Cloud was the one who actually wanted to save Aerith from Shinra, even though he only just met her. He even said it was because he was her bodyguard :3

And they he goes after Aerith again when she goes after Sephiroth :(

Squall goes after Rinoa twice. Once when she tries to stop Edea and again at the Sorceress memorial but that time he actually wanted to go. The first time I think Irvine had to make him save her, but that was before Squall fell head over heels for Rinoa.

Nice pattern, but it's true that Tifa has to be rescued a couple of times as well. And I think it's a tad hypocritical to say at one time that Aeris isn't helpless, doesn't rely on Cloud to save her, and isn't a damsel (as many of us have in multiple threads here) and then at another time claim that her rescues are evidence or hints towards C/A. I just don't think it's right to downplay Aeris' need for Cloud in one breath and then emphasize it in another. :ermm:

Not that I'm accusing anyone in this thread of being hypocritical, and I'm certainly not trying to put words in anyone's mouths either. I'm just saying it wouldn't be wise to use both those arguments in debates for that reason.

Did Cloud actually go after Tifa at some point in the game? Nothing seems to be coming to my mind at this sec. I need a refreshing of FFVII...badly. :P

I think one can argue that Aerith is a damsel in distress only as much as Tifa is. You just have to be careful about how you word things because one can really end up contradicting oneself.

I think Aerith is emotionally strong and isn't clingy, but I've always seen her as being physically weaker, and like the fact that she's also the opposite of Cloud in that aspect. To me, it shows the give-and-take relationship that's often portrayed between the protagonist and his love interest. While Cloud needs her emotional support, there are going to be times when Aerith will need his physical strength. What I like about her though is that she doesn't need to be clingy in order for Cloud to come rescue her. It's something that seems to come to him and occur naturally. I think she IS like a damsel in distress in that sense...and seriously, there's nothing wrong with that. Rinoa, Garnet, Yuna, and just about every RPG heroine can be seen as such. At least at one point in time, they all depended on the hero/their love interest to rescue them. No one's complaining about them, so why should people complain about Aerith?

While she most likely did not need Cloud's assistance with the Turks, there were situations where she really did need the help. She's not invincible. I just don't think it's correct for people to label Aerith as a damsel in distress and, in that same breath, worship Tifa as goddess of muscles and strength when, in actuality, there were times when she also needed to rely on the others for help. If Aerith is one, so is Tifa.

Well, actually, Aerith suggested on herself to go look for Tifa, since only girls can go in the Don's Mansion.. And then Cloud disagreed with her with a very abrupt :

QUOTE
Aerith: "Hey, this looks like the Don's mansion. I'll go take a look."
        "I'll tell Tifa about you."

Cloud: No!! You can't!! "
All exclamation marks are there
Doesn't that just give you a hint that Cloud cares for Aerith more than the norm, even though they just met like what? A day ago.. ?

But then again, I guess any guy wouldn't let a girl go in .. one of those kinda mansions, right?
Scratch that. =P

Also, another very random thing. But while I was searching the script of FFVII ....
Remember that scene where Aerith and Cloud are sitting on the broken slide and they're talking? Guess what that scene's called :

Playground Ai.

That, roughly translated, would be, Playground Love, where as Ai in Japanese and Chinese mean, Love.

I don't know how to expand with this little title clue, but unless the scene was named Playground Love for Cloud and/or Aerith's love for the playground, or the fact that Aerith was talking about Zack, then I would say a new love was formed at the playground?

Idunno. :P

Yup, Cloud said he didn't want to let her go in alone. However, it was Aerith who then asked him to come inside with her by offering the cross-dressing idea. I'm too lazy to go look for the quote, but I'm almost one-hundred percent positive she asked him if he wanted to go inside with her.

Playground Ai.

Very interesting!
I didn't know that was the title of the scene. Was this title only used in the Japanese version or was it in the English version as well? I've never gone through the script before.

Ah, I see.

Here's the quote :

QUOTE
Cloud
"You DO know... what kind of... place this is, don't you?"

Aerith
"Then, what am I supposed to do? You want to go in with me?"

Cloud
"Well being a man, that'll be pretty hard. Besides if I bust in
there, it'll cause too much commotion."

(Aerith is giggling.)

Cloud
"But, I just can't let you go in alone... Oh, man......"
"First, we'll need to find out if Tifa's alright...."
        "What's so funny, Aerith?"

Aerith
"Cloud, why don't you dress up like a girl? It's the only way."

Cloud
        "WHAT!?"

I believe it was for both, Hade's :3 Or maybe just the American, as the person who created the script said it was the only American version script ever made.

Paopu! Haha I can't help posting a reply cuz I love this episode sooooo much!! :cleris: I too feel it abrupt about Cloud's attitude whiile he strongly refuses to let Aerith get involves with danger~I mean, for a girl who he knows only for a day, it's really over-protective of him. :D I remember he at first is unwilling to adopt Aerith's suggestion:

Aerith: "Just wait. I've got a cute friend I want to bring."

Cloud: "Aerith! I can't....."

Aerith: "You ARE worried about Tifa, aren't you? Then come on, hurry!"

And when they find the owner of the dress shop in the bar, Cloud is apparently being persuaded:

Cloud : "Make me some clothes."

.......XD And we say Cloud's the guy who is stubborn to other ppl's requests..

Oh!(finally aware that I'm so off-topic), about the rescue sequence, I always find it a lovely Cleris thread everytime I played other FF series! :D I know Tifa also needs to be rescued several times in Game, but I remember they all involves the whole gang, right? But rescuing Aerith is Cloud's own idea at first! :fangirl:

Well, Cloud saved aerith a lot of times in ff7. When he met her in the church, he saved her from shinra. Then, in the shinra building he saved her. And then, when aerith ran to the forgotten city he tried to save her,

and tifa? The rescue in the inn was not really a rescue. Cloud was not very worried, it was more a minigame ( cloud dressing like a woman and all).

I think that when Cloud should have saved her was when tifa was in this camera after escarlet left her alone to kill her. Yes. Cloud should have appeared, but, no....

cloud let zack died as well, and aerith...after all, he was human, more than an hero..

Ultima Star - September 19, 2007 08:33 PM (GMT)
Whoa that was something I've never have thought..though like some of you said if we use this as proof on a debate then Clotis are going to say we're self pwning us =/
And yeah Aerith was the one who wanted to enter there and when she told him to get dressed as a girl at first he refused he never actually said "I want to do this for her!" or stuff like that.
And when she asked him if he was worried about Tifa he never answered so far as I remember
And he was a whole lot more worried about Aerith going there by herself than Tifa being there
Hehe, well and if you picked Aerith for the DonCorneo's date then we have the chance to go for Aeris and ignore Tifa  great isn't it XD
