Description: The REAL one gets a remake in full 3D

FF3. The REAL one, that was only released in japan.
This is an enchanted remake for the DS.
And it won't be a japanese only release :)

An official shot of the English version of the remake showing Luneth, the new protagonist. The Final Fantasy III Nintendo DS remake was first revealed to be in development on October 7, 2004, but detailed information did not emerge until a year later. Hiromichi Tanaka, one of the main designers of the original, is heading the project as both the executive producer and director. His guidance and supervision is needed because the game will not be a mere graphics update like the updates for Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II, but a total overhaul using the Nintendo DS's 3D capabilities; however, early screenshots suggest the layout of the dungeons and towns will be identical to the original. Ryosuke Aiba, the art director of Final Fantasy XI, is the new art director. Along with the 3D graphics, a full motion video opening scene has been made for the game, similar to those from the 2D Final Fantasy remakes for the PlayStation.

Akihiko Yoshida is the new artist who will be revamping previous character designs, and the game will change the main party characters completely. The characters are given default names: Luneth (Runesu), Arc (Arukuu), Refia (Refia) and Ingus (Inguzu) three are male and one is female. They will be given new personalities and background stories, and additional scenes will be added to expand upon their personalities and tales, but the main storyline will not be changed. Along with these four, additional characters (called sub-characters) will also join the party temporarily, like in the original. Unlike the original however, these characters may randomly participate in battle.

Also confirmed are overhauls to the job system, including the rebalancing of the classes, the addition of new abilities, a new "Freelancer" class that becomes the default job for the characters at the beginning of the game (Onion Knight is now a separate class), and changes to use of Capacity Points. Unlike the original Famicom version, most of the jobs will remain useful for the entire game; the ultimate jobs, the Ninja and the Sage, will be rebalanced so that they will be at the same level as the Warrior and others.

It also has been noted that the remake will take advantage of the Wi-Fi hardware of the Nintendo DS, though Square-Enix has not stated how it will do so.

On April 24, 2006, Square Enix issued a press-release announcing that Final Fantasy III will be part of their E3 2006 line-up, and that after 16 years, the game will see a release outside of Japan. It has recently been stated by the Japanese magazine Famitsu that Final Fantasy III is slated for release in Japan on August 24, 2006.The North American version will be released on September 12, 2006.

Characters

*note
The original version had 4 young male characters

Luneth
Luneth (¥ë©`¥Í¥¹, R¨±nesu?) is an orphan who was raised at the remote village of Ur by the priest, Topapa. Curious, positive and clever, Luneth would demonstrate his ability to support others during times of crisis. He is brave in speech, but there are times he will regret what he says. Even so, he is always responsible for what comes out of his mouth, and would fight until the end to deliver his promises. Also a great mood maker who can cheer up others, Luneth serves as the bona fide leader of the party.

user posted image
Arc
Arc (¥¢¥ë¥¯¥¥, Aruk¨±?) is Luneth's childhood friend, and is also raised by Topapa. He is a timid type who is unable to step ahead of himself. Arc prefers to read books at home rather than play outside, and as such, his broad knowledge is acknowledged by everyone.

user posted image
Refia
Refia (¥ì¥Õ¥£¥¢, Refia?) was raised by the Kazus village blacksmith, Taca. She became tired of her strict blacksmith training and ran away from home. Refia has a cheerful and active personality, and tends to force her opinions on others. Therefore, she is frequently at odds with Luneth. Nevertheless, underneath this cover, she is a good-hearted and confident individual. [1]

Ingus
Ingus (¥¤¥ó¥°¥º, Inguzu?) is a soldier who has swore allegiance to the King of Sasoon. A brave and skilled individual, he acts as the calm elder brother in the party of four. [2]

(Nes and DS version)

The story
on a floating continent hovering high above the surface of an unnamed planet, a technologically advanced civilization sought to harness the power of the four elemental crystals of light. They did not realize that they could not hope to control such fundamental forces of nature. This power of light would have consumed the world itself had the light crystals not had their natural counterparts: the four dark elemental crystals. Disturbed by the sudden interruption of the careful balance of the light and the dark, four warriors were granted the power of the dark crystals in order to re-contain the power of the light crystals. These so-called Dark Warriors succeeded in their quest, and restored harmony to the world. But their victory came too late to save the doomed civilization that had foolishly tried to harness the power of the crystals to begin with. Their once-proud culture was reduced to ruin, though their floating continent remained, a reminder of what had come before. And on that very continent, the circle of Gurgans, a race of blind soothsayers and fortune-tellers, predicts that eventually things will come full circle. Just as the power of light can be abused, so too can the power of darkness. And when that occurs, then the crystals of the light will need to call forth their own champions to restore balance to the world....

One day, an earthquake opens up a previously hidden cavern in Altar Cave near the village of Ur on the floating continent. Four orphaned youths under the care of Topapa, the village elder, go exploring and come across a crystal of light. The crystal grants them a portion of its power, and instructs them to go forth and restore balance to the world. Not knowing what to make of the crystal's pronouncements, but nonetheless recognizing the importance of its words, the four inform their adoptive family of their mission and set out to explore.

This is only the beginning... The ultimate goal of the heroes--the liberation of light--will bring balance back to the world.

Wifi info and japanese box art

While these details are not confirmed, they are most likely true. Also keep in mind that next week¡¯s Jump magazine is supposed to contain more info on the wifi play in FFIII. Having said that, I think the tidbit we have for now is pretty interesting. It appears that gamers will be able to send letters back and forth to each other over the wifi connection, letters that are delivered by Moogles. Once these letters are sent back and forth, events are created within the game for you to play. It is unclear whether these events are playable with friends, or in single player¡hopefully things will be cleared up next week.

Tell me I'm not the only one who felt a shiver run up my spine after viewing the trailer.

That's great news about remaking FFIII! Thanks for sharing, Dark and Light!
I heard about the remake and I'm so excited over it. The FMV graphics look gorgeous and the 'in-game' graphics look pretty good, especially for the DS. And Wifi capablities?! Interesting, I wonder how that will enhance the gameplay.

FF_Goddess - July 6, 2006 07:22 PM (GMT)
It's just being released for Nintendo???

Dark and Light - July 6, 2006 08:53 PM (GMT)
Yep. It's only for the nintendo DS.
I heard some rumors about a PS2 version, but it's fake.
So beter save up a ds lite if you want this game :D

Don't fred about the lack of games though.
Children of mana will be on the DS as well
Just do some research about the DS
maybe there will be a few titles that interest you :D

*want's a DS lite badly*

Paladin's Heart - July 6, 2006 09:10 PM (GMT)
This game is starting to sound good and look good too! ^_^.

Now I will have trouble on deciding on either a Wii, PS3 or DS... *sigh. So many games, but which system to buy?

The guy with the book is so the mage xD.

Dark and Light - July 7, 2006 11:37 AM (GMT)
No FF3 DS love  Why?....
Come on FF fans!

Anyway...some E3 hands-on impressions at gamespot :D

E3 06: Final Fantasy III Hands-On Impressions[/B]
We get our hands on the only Final Fantasy title that has never seen the light of day outside of Japan.

LOS ANGELES--Final Fantasy completists everywhere can finally breathe a sigh of relief, their collections at last fulfilled. Final Fantasy III was always a sort of "lost chapter" in the series' continuity, one that was always passed over for localization--until now. Not only will we at last get to experience the full measure of Final Fantasy history, we'll be able to do it in 3D. We couldn't help but be enticed to the game's presence on the E3 show floor, and we took the opportunity to tool around in one more Final Fantasy universe.

We started off in a small village that was immediately reminiscent of any number of early Final Fantasy towns, replete with separate shops for weapons, armor, and magic. We stopped by the black magic shop to buy a spell (Poison) and talked to a few of the denizens. The shift to 3D has given the old town template a fresh and full look, with lots of little details in homes and shops, as well as in characters. The black mage in the black magic shop, for example, looked great with his smoky, shadowy face, bright-blue robes, and signature pointy hat. The same sort of detail is also passed to your party of four characters, with their varying outfits and simple, smiling, noseless faces. If you remember the nose-free portrait art in Final Fantasy Tactics, you'll see it reprised here, as these games share a common character designer in Akihiko Yoshida (who's also worked on Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy XII).

Our party didn't show a great deal of differentiation in ability, though, since all were set to the same basic character class (not onion knight!), and so each character has access to only a standard attack, as well as the fire spell. So, no chance to play with the game's job system quite yet, but we did get to dig into a bit of combat with a selection of enemies. When you enter into a random encounter, you'll be presented with the standard turn-based battle system, queuing up the actions of your whole party and then waiting for everything to happen. If you really want to, you can even use the touch screen to navigate the battle menus and select which monsters to attack, though doing things the normal route via the existing controls works just fine, too.

The monsters in the game look good after their markup to 3D, with the ever-present goblins still managing to hold up after all these years. Particularly impressive was a large creature called a land turtle, who managed to fill the enemy side of the battle screen in an imposing fashion, detailed down to the claws on his flippers and the ridges on his shell. The fire spell also has a nice spell animation, with characters calling down a swirl of magical energy that sparks into flame on enemies.

We'll want to delve much further into the game to get a handle on the job system and such, but visually at least, Final Fantasy III is making itself right at home on the Nintendo DS, to good effect. Keep watching this gamespace for more news on this classic RPG as it approaches release later this year.

Just when I was thinking of getting a PSP...

This remake sounds so cool! :woot: I admit, when I first saw Arc, I was like 'Aww, she's pretty' until I read the bio '...Arc's a guy...'.

Somehow, Refia's design make me think of Chrno Crusade Rosette...

For the longest time, I was wondering what FFIII was and I finally have some info. Thanks for sharing, Dark and Light. I think it looks pretty cool actually. I own just about every game in the FF series, and I especially adore the old-school ones. I would love to play this one when they release it...except it's on the DS! *shakes a fist*

Based on her looks, I also get a sense of FFXII's Ashe. Gah...they need to come up with a new game in the series containing a heroine with a fresh new design.

Yeah but this is Square after all. Most of their female characters are based off of similar designs. I mean just look at Tinoaet.

Man if they're doing this, then maybe one day they'll finally decide to remake IV or VI? Honestly, I love FFVII, but to me it can never compare to those two old school games. And hot damn do I want to see Cecil, Cain and/or Lock looking all bishi in their cg glory!

Azerty - July 13, 2006 07:22 PM (GMT)
Wait, the original one had characters in them? I thought it only had classes and you named the classes, like you do in Final Fantasy. If I had a DS, I would get this game.

It's not just the female characters. Take a look at characters like Cloud, Shuyin, Sora, Roxas, etc. I'm sure SE is quite capable of new character designs. If Atlus, Konami, Sony, etc. can all do it, so can SE. They just need to actually do it...

Kusari Yarou - July 14, 2006 07:25 AM (GMT)
ZOMG, COOL.
Even cooler, I think I can actually afford it when it's released! :D

3 guys and 1 girl, eh? I smell love polygon fanfics!

Yeah, look at Konami who manages to give unique character designs to 108+ characters :)

Timid shy personality, loves to read, yup, that screams mage all right!

And is it just me or does Ingus look like a CG version of Final Fantasy Tactics' Ramza Beoulve?!

QFT!

It's wierd though. Refia looks blond in the game, but when you look at
her chibi art work...she's a redhead :ermm: and her hair looks darker in some screens to...??? oh well...red head FTW! (but it doesn't matter)

Ps. Look at my first post. I've updated it.

Azerty - July 14, 2006 09:08 PM (GMT)
Arc looks like a girl!!! No seriously...he looks like a girl. So does Luneth and Ignus. Why must all of Square's characters look like girly men! That's not fair. :(

Kuki Prower - November 14, 2006 03:38 PM (GMT)
Today marks the first ever english release of FFIII! Well, according to Wikipedia xD So, have any of you guys got a taste of the lost Final Fantasy?

Bronwen - November 15, 2006 06:10 PM (GMT)
I think I just about droolled a whole pool of my yucky saliva. This one was one of my favourite fantasy series and despite it's old age graphics, I still found it awesome. Now I have to get me a Nintendo DS.

Kuki Prower - November 15, 2006 07:17 PM (GMT)
You played the NES version on ROM or in Japanese Bronwen? Or maybe you're confusing this "Final Fantasy III" as "Final Fantasy VI"?

VI was released as III in America. I personally can't wait til I get the chance to play III, I love the Job system of V and old skool games are amoung my favourites.

No...hmm...I think (I hope) I got my head straight here...I know that III here was VI over in Japan and that one is with Terra and Celes, right? LOL...I played the NES version in the comp.

Yay, finally was able to buy this yesterday and played maybe about an hour of it today.

It. Is. So. Feckin. CUTE. I adore Arc, the resident shy-but-cute-beyond-words sidekick white mage (well, he's my white mage! I'm gonna make Refia the black mage). All 4 of the characters are really cute though. I want to turn Luneth into an onion knight. x3

The game's actually kinda tough. And they don't sell phoenix downs! Arg, that annoys me greatly.

Kaldea - February 14, 2007 02:47 AM (GMT)
I level up like crazy before doing anything. I'm one of those freaks who likes to max everything out before finishing the game. <3

Lolz, mognet. <3

DeathGigas - February 14, 2007 02:51 AM (GMT)
Lol I also just got it a while ago. It's so much fun, especially that Wi Fi thing where you can send mail to each other. The one hour limit things sucks, though. LOL CG REPLY ALREADY GAWDZ.

MY FAVORITE CHARACTER IS REFIA, k. She's my black mage, work dem goodiez. Luneth is still a freelancer, Ingus is my Red Mage, and Arc is my knight. *squeez*

It isn't really that tough. Probably because I love to train. The lack of phoenix downs IS annoying. But there are little fountains that heal you, revive your characters, or heal your ailments. Each fountain has a different job. Lolz.

Kaldea - February 14, 2007 02:57 AM (GMT)
I never need Phoenix Downs because I level up too much.

I love Refia too. She's my white mage right now. I just finished killing that Medusa thing and now I'm in that Gysahl town or whatev. ^_^

DeathGigas - February 14, 2007 02:58 AM (GMT)
The only time I needed Phoenix Downs was when I let my little sister play. She wasted all of them. *slits*

Ahaha, that was too easy. The next boss you have to fight twice. Have you gotten any new jobs yet? I want the Dark Knight!

Kaldea - February 14, 2007 03:00 AM (GMT)
NO NEW JOBS YET CUZ IM A N00B *SLITSMORE*

I love the chocobos. They are cute and quite useful, rly. I wanna breed them again, gawdz.

DeathGigas - February 14, 2007 03:02 AM (GMT)
rofl. I WANT THE SAGE, TOO.

Ja, they're quite kikku ketsu. I got some item thing by running around the continent with a chocobo, lolz.

Kaldea - February 14, 2007 03:04 AM (GMT)
Yeah, it was Gnomish Bread or whatev. Gawds, I wanted a chicobo or somfin. :fish:

I want Devout. I think the sugoi ears on the hood appeal to my girly side. *Squeez*

*Looks up more jobs*

DeathGigas - February 14, 2007 03:07 AM (GMT)
Ja, I was quite disappointed. *slits*

WIKKKIIIIPIDEA PLZ. They don't have any images, though! The Scholars are funny! I think they're quite funny looking. They're wearing glasses, lolz.

What do Devouts specialize in? :fish:

Kaldea - February 14, 2007 03:13 AM (GMT)
Devouts are like the highest grade white mage. :fish:

It's so hard trying to find all the artz of the jobs, ugh. :fish: Can't even make graphics at this rate.

DeathGigas - February 20, 2007 04:54 AM (GMT)
That Arias chick had a striking resemblance with Aeris. The purposes of the two are also linked. I'd go more in depth, but it has spoilers. :o

I'm still leveling up like nuts.

DeathGigas - February 20, 2007 05:04 AM (GMT)
I'm way ahead of you and I'm like one level above you! You're going to breeze through the bosses. Make sure to double check each dungeon. There are real useful stuff hidden around in unexpected placed.

-revivify!-

Okay. So I'm trying to do the sidequests. You know, the one where you have to send Kupomail to the FFIII Denizens?

There's one problem. They won't reply to your letters unless you interact with other players, meaning sending Kupomail to other players.

I had a good group of friends who had FF3 give me their friend codes, in exchange for mine so that I could do the sidequests, but alas, they never reply to my messages, or just plain don't check their mail.

So, I am currently asking you other FF3 owners if I could exchange FC's with you, so that I can complete the sidequests. Please? It dosen't matter what you send me, spam or flaming. Whatever! As long as we just communicate via Kupomail. xD.
