Title: Character Naming
Description: Do you like naming them?

Sk8ierBoi - July 2, 2006 11:06 PM (GMT)
Do you rather name your characters or keep the default names?

I'd rather keep the defaults in the game so that I won't get lost or anything. It's a lot better to keep their original names because it's unique and relates to the story. If I change the names I sometimes lose interest in the game. I would sometimes name them really FUNNY cool names lol. I remember naming Cloud my name, Barret my dad, and some other characters my family name lol.

Pyra Kurai Akaidra - July 3, 2006 09:53 AM (GMT)
I only rename them if I feel like replaying the game.

FF7

Cloud - Coda (a friend's OC)

Aerith - Sonica (my OC, often paired up with Coda in our RPs :D )

Tifa - Janice (after myself, my logic is that having Cloud being nice on purpose is like him doing it for ME. Plus, I'm not exactly a Aerith act-alike.)

Red XIII - Akira (spur of the moment choice) or Red (how can anyone keep on calling out to him with the numbers attached?)

Yuffie - Pyra ( :P )

Cait Sith - Cait (shorten)

FF8

Squall - Lee (another one of my OCs)

Rinoa - Hana (alternative name to female OC I paired up with Lee)

FF9

Zidane - Shuyin (don't ask...my sister and I choose this randomly while eating sugar)

Garnet - Lenne (*point to above*)

Steiner - Baka (Just to hear "Captain Baka!" )

FF10

Tidus - Naruto (one game), Shuyin (my sis's game)

Valefor - Aquila (too much Digimon...from Aquilamon)

Ifrit - Blaze

Shiva - Crystal

Ixion - Hakuhyou (DON'T ask...I forgot.)

Vincent_Valentine - July 3, 2006 05:09 PM (GMT)
Yeah I enjoy naming the characters. For me, it adds to the fun factor.

Meggie - July 8, 2006 08:44 PM (GMT)
I don't like to nickname them i always prefer their original names

The_Drizzle - July 9, 2006 06:46 PM (GMT)
I use original names. I see there is no point in renaming them. I mean the creators put all that time into giving them names and personality, it just doent feel right to give them some name to bastardize thier characters they worked so hard on.

Meatwad - July 9, 2006 07:01 PM (GMT)
I keep the default names due to the gamemakers took time to give them names so what's the point into trying to rename them?

Lockheart - July 9, 2006 07:31 PM (GMT)
I keep their default names. It just seems more ... I don't know the word, but I just don't feel like tampering with their names

MistaCloudStrife - July 10, 2006 06:29 AM (GMT)
I keep thier original names... Except for maybe changing Red to Nanaki, Aeris to Aerith, Garnet to Dagger or Sarah, etc...

And from my experience, alot of people who have casually played an RPG and renamed the characters rarely and sometimes never remember that character's real name.

Paladin's Heart - July 10, 2006 06:41 AM (GMT)
Actually, I like doing both. I don't do it alot but the only games I actually kept on the names were FFII and Golden Sun. But the Golden Sun game was partially my friends too.

Everyone except Piers - Bob
Piers - ... uhh, I don't think I should post his name xD.

and I actually do the same as Mista too. like Aeris to Aerith or Piers to Picard.

cloudnine - July 10, 2006 04:41 PM (GMT)
First few times I played I kept the original names because it was less confusing, but as I replay the game, I make up my own names for them.

I remember one time, I gave Aerith my name and Cloud my boyfriend's name. I also gave Tifa the name of the girl who kept trying to steal MY boyfriend. XD It really made it a wholelot more fun and emotional for me.. espeically when "I" died  I can't remember what I named the other characters back then though o_O

Demos Maus - July 10, 2006 05:45 PM (GMT)
I like doing both. I play the game once with the orginal names and then I start changing the names.

Kuki Prower - July 10, 2006 06:06 PM (GMT)
I love to change their names, they feel more personal and open to me then.

Scott - July 11, 2006 10:29 AM (GMT)
I think it ruins the game if you rename everyone with something different (JMO obviously).

But I do change Red XIII to Nanaki (like others) and if I see Aeris as Aerith, I change it to Aeris. It's the way I've always known it. (Though on the my PS1 copy, if you put it in the PC and view the files, it shows Earith, so...I don't know which version is the default for the game I own)

And I once called Steiner from FF IX, "Rusty". It made the insults which Zidane gave him sound boring!

Tacofoolio - July 11, 2006 04:09 PM (GMT)
I keep the names, just a preference, to me they have their names for a reason, and renaming them some name just because you know someone with that name has never appealed to me. Then you might think the character is just like that person, and ignore how the character really acts. However, it does amuse me to read others who have renamed them and get funny results.

Azerty - July 12, 2006 09:16 PM (GMT)
I usually just keep the default names. I never change the name ever because it would make the story confusing sometimes.

Imaginary__girl - July 12, 2006 11:08 PM (GMT)
I usually name them if I play the second time through. But I keep the defaults for the first time, it helps me focus more on the story.

Kusari Yarou - July 13, 2006 02:07 AM (GMT)
I almost always keep the originals because it makes me feel funny to hear anything other than the original names. Got nothing against changing the names though. It's funny to see a hero or a love interest bearing you or your boyfriend's name  But I remember getting irritated once, when my cousin changed the names of all the FF9 characters to Rocky1, Rocky2, Rocky3, etc. It made them sound like robots!

Carmen - July 29, 2006 12:37 AM (GMT)
I would always change the names depending on who can relate to what couple's story on a certain FF. ^_^

Except for the names on FFIX. Not just because of the story, but the characters had fancy names that I had liked, so I decided to keep them.

And Scott I, too, think changing everyone's name does ruin the game for some people.

Yuffie_chan - July 29, 2006 07:09 PM (GMT)
i usually use the default names but when i replay the games i like to change them juss to screw around liek give them soemthing vulgar or mix around pplz names heh heh ^^;

Flower_Girl - July 29, 2006 08:06 PM (GMT)
I tried changing the names once, and it really confused me. So I stick the the defult names. Now that I think about it, they are better anyway.

Rinchan - November 7, 2006 03:41 AM (GMT)
On one of the times that I replayed FF7 I gave all the characters really goofy names

Cloud- Aloud (this was actually by accident because I hit X instead of start, and didn't realize I chanced the C to and A.

Tifa- Blimps

Barrett- GRRRR

Aeris- Spike

Red XII- Fluffy

Yuffie- Bobo

Cait Sith- Robo Puss

Vincent- Larry

Cid-Shaggy

All the other times I've played the game I've kept the defult names.

One time my friend switched all the names around, I can't remember them all but the main ones were

Cloud- Tifa
Aeris- Red XIII
Tifa- Cait Sith

This made for some very disturbing dialogue!

Desi - November 12, 2006 07:09 PM (GMT)
I prefer to keep the default names, it keeps me from confusing myself during in game dialogue.

Key - November 12, 2006 07:56 PM (GMT)
In the PS1 FF games, I'd almost always change the names of at least the 2 main leads. xD I think I hcanged Dagger's name to "Kiril" or something. Can't remember exactly.

lol I remember the first time I played FFVII (my first RPG evar), they asked me for my name (well, they asked Cloud for his name) so I put my real name down and they kept calling Cloud that. I restarted the game.

NekoDono - November 12, 2006 08:42 PM (GMT)
XD With me, if you give me an option I go crazy with it. Here we go...

Cloud = Quackers (inside joke)
Tifa = Crazylady (inside joke)
Aeris = Not God (inside joke)
Barret = Mr. T (like the rest of the world)
Red 13 = Fesodenab (inside joke)
Yuffie = Yuffie (got lazy)
Vincent = Vincent (lazy again)
Cait Sith = Charlie (It just fit him so well)
Cid = Cid (laziness)

It made the game kind of weird at times. XD

Zelda - November 13, 2006 12:36 AM (GMT)
I love naming my characters! Usually I name them after people I know, it makes the story more fun. I do remember one FF game I named everyone a japanese game. I forgot most of them, but I do remember...

Tifa - Sakura
Yuffie - Usagi
Aeris - Hana or Rei (I forgot)
Vincent - Kenji
Cid - Kaze
Cloud - Satoshi

I forgot all the other names...

The_Krazie_Chick - November 19, 2006 10:45 PM (GMT)
My brother and I are in the middle of a playthrough(that's how it works in this family. The first time we all play a game we have seperate files, then we just all play the same one.) We came up with this:

Cloud: Jesus
Barret: God
Tifa: Annoying
Yuffie: Dr.McNinja
Red XII: Fluffykins
Cid: C. Norris
Aerith: Cookie
Vincent: Dead

There have been times when we've both been crying from the Cloud/Barret dialogue. :D

Thearix - November 21, 2006 09:13 PM (GMT)
I change 'Aeris' to 'Aerith. Maybe after I've replayed FFVII a few times, I might change it. ^^

aerisbolt - November 21, 2006 09:38 PM (GMT)
I almost always keep the default names, it keeps me connected to the story. I think in older games it could be fun to use people you know for the names if you have played the game a lot since sometimes the personalites may not be as distinct, but as I said mostly I use the default ones.

I will say some of the examples on here are interesting

Resha - November 22, 2006 08:15 AM (GMT)
call me crazy if you must...
Cloud- Yamato
Aerith-Mimi
Tifa- Sora
Barret- Taichi XD
Yuffie- Hikari
Vincent- Takeru (I have no idea why)
Red XII- Third (don't have an idea why either)
Cid- blondendugly x_x

these are their names in my ffvii. however...
Cloud- Kenji (iloveyou!)
Aerith- Line (yours truly)
Tifa- Tin (childhood fwend of his)
somehow, these are their names...

Kuki Prower - November 22, 2006 07:28 PM (GMT)
Usually, in every single RPG I play, I rename every character. Because I feel most close to them that way ^_^

Anti-R - November 23, 2006 01:05 AM (GMT)
I keep their default names. Well, except Aeris to Aerith and Red XIII to Nanaki and Dagger to Garnet.

My last play in FFX I named Tidus "You" because Yuna calls him that in the sequel, lolers.

The_Krazie_Chick - November 25, 2006 04:30 AM (GMT)
I was just at my friends house, and she's doing a playthrough of VII. Anyway, she named Cloud "Bitch". We were playing the whole "Cloud becomes a transvestite to get into the Don's place" thing. Aerith called Cloud "Miss Bitch". I thought I was going to have heart failure from laughing so hard. Does that make me immature? :D
