Watch this old commercial of the game, and it clearly states, "A love that could never be" as they show Cloud putting Aerith in the water. :cleris:

Even though I must say I don't know if I like them showing Aeris in that famous scene. Heck they show part of the ending too but what can you do that is how they chose to hype up the game.
I feel previews many times tell you too much, and that can take away from the story they are trying to sell you in the first place. Just my two cents.
