Title: Will Aerith Come Back?
Description: aerith's final words
KH_Aerith - May 18, 2006 01:05 PM (GMT)
ok, i know ppl like 2 agree that once ur dead ur dead and aerith's resurrection will b pretty obvious (^_^ even tho its what we would like)
but a part of me likes 2 believe that she might come back to life
do u remember cloud's dream when aerith says to him
"..."i'll come back when it's all over"
maybe she meant when all the threats r over? (maybe AFTER AC)
 i might b being silly but what do u all think?

Well, I think there's always the possibility that Aerith could return. In the end, the FFVII world contains elements of fantasy and magic, and even if the Lifestream system was explained pretty thoroughly (you die, you join the world, you're 'reborn'), there are always exceptions to the rule.
We'll never really know unless SE outright states that there's no way to revive the dead, as opposed to not doing it out of principle.
As for it being "pretty obvious"... So many people say it's "expected" of SE to resurrect Aerith and believe they won't do it, that it might actually be one heck of a surprise if Aerith really is resurrected.

I really don't think Aerith is ever going to come back physically. If she did, SE's message behind their theme of life would be pointless. By killing her off, they wanted to show the whole idea that people's consciousness continue to live on in others even though they've passed away...meaning, they're not truly gone. Because her consciousness lives on in him, Cloud can still see her and she's still very much a part of his life as portrayed in AC.

Personally, I think what she meant in that line has already happened. At the end of FFVII (after Sephiroth's defeat) Aerith was portrayed opening her eyes, and AC showed her as coming back and being a part of Cloud's life, even if just in spirit form. It was sad that she never came back in physical form (nor do I believe that she ever will), but I have the feeling this line was put in there by SE in connection to the whole idea of 'life". No matter what happens, in the end, as long as her consciousness continues to live on in Cloud...she'll always come back. :cleris:

My brother says I'm about half-way through the first disk (I'm in Cosmo Canyon!!!) but watching the movie, I think Aerith was present in every scene. It's like she never left in the first place.

I don't think the end where she appeared after the lifestream was connected to her, "I'll come back when it's all over." since she said it to Cloud. Cloud didn't see her when she appeared before "us" in the game. Only we saw her. I believe showing Aeris in the lifestream just told us that Aeris played a part in the whole lifesteam vs meteor scene.
You also have to remember Cloud's "I'm going to meet her."... Something happened in the lifestream when he reached his hand out to her. He came to a realization when he saw Aeris there.
Now to answer this question about what she meant we'll have to know this... "...when it's all over." When what is all over?
After this is answered we can probably find out exactly what she meant about coming back.

SE showed her eyes opening for a reason. I didn't mean that Cloud was actually able to "meet" her yet in that scene. I meant that her eyes opening up at the end of the game meant she'd "come back to life"...which eventually leads to her being able to "come back and meet him" in AC (hence, the whole idea about life and consciousness).

I sort of think it's a reference to the ending of Cloud's story. She did come back, and that was pretty much the conclusion I got out of AC. Unless CC changes everything by taking place after AC as well (*and* if Aerith's in it), I'm not sure how SE would further use her line there...

I don't think she will come back to life well physically where she can live on earth, but I do wonder what she meant by she will come back when it's all over. I know that she can and does come back to earth every once in a while, how often and for how long I don't know.

I've been thinking about this for a while now.In FFX when Tidus disappeared,he went to the farplane.Since FFX and FFVII are connected and the farplane is the same thing as the lifestream, then couldn't Aerith come back the same way Tidus did?

That's pretty much what I meant by SE not resurrecting Aerith on principle. ^_^ They had a point to make in FFVII through Aerith's death and continued spiritual presence, and thankfully, they kept to it in AC. They're choosing not to revive her, but I don't believe they've ever stated firmly that resurrections do not occur in the FFVII world (in the way I've heard J.K. Rowling express that death was a finality in Harry Potter).
Personally, I think resurrections have a very slim chance of happening in FFVII. Biggest reason is that there's no precedent for it in the game (with the notable exception of Sephiroth), and the few resurrection fics I've read in the past usually bring in something "original" from the author-- a special materia, for example, that didn't exist in canon.
But I think if, say, 10 years down the road and assuming FFVII is still going strong... and SE's in a major financial crisis since FFXXIII The Movie was a bomb... They'll still have Aerith's words "I'll come back when it's all over" as the perfect opening for a resurrection in FFVII-2.

The thing about Tidus is that he never really existed in the first place. He didn't die. He disappeared so that the Fayth could take a rest. He appeared again a couple years after, and the obvious reason for that is that the Fayth dreamt him up again. He's still not really "alive" even in X-2.

Didn't Nomura himself (along with Mr. Kitase or Nojima) said in one interview that Aerith's death was so important to the story that they wouldn't revive her? I guess, and I'm pretty sure I once read that.

Actually though, Maiden Over the Planet states that Cloud and the others saw Aerith's smile, the same one we were shown at the end of the game, in the lifestream briefly before it faded away.
| QUOTE (Maiden Over the Planet) |
| Aboard the Highwind, Cloud saw it. So did Tifa, Barret and the others. They saw Aerith's smile that never left their memories, appear in the Lifestream and gently, it faded away as it returned into the Planet. |

I agree that SE *can* bring Aerith back. All they'd have to do is write a story where she was somehow resurrected, and well, she'd be back. As a writer, you can do just about whatever you like. It's just that personally, I don't think they will though...since the whole point of the game (it's theme) was to, by using her death, portray the idea behind life and consciousness. Then again, SE could always just change the theme of FFVII-2 to 'ressurection' or something and bring her back... :D

...from what I'm understanding of "life and consciousness", I really think Aerith's line there has already been fulfilled. And if I've misunderstood...well...I'm all for more Cloud and Aerith in FFVII-2 anyway. :cleris:

I think that what we see in AC is about as good as we are going to get to Aerith "coming back" that's good enough for me
