A club for the fans of these fabulous series by Watase. Talk about each series, have fun with polls, etc. I love all the series. Fushigi Yuugi is my favorite. The manga is fantastic. I love the love story between Miaka and Tamahome. It is wonderful, romantic and captivating. For Ayashi no Ceres, the manga is wonderful, the anime takes out so much. Aya and Tooya's story is so much deeper in the manga.

I've only read Absolute Boyfriend, but I'll join.
What are some of those others about?

Fushigi Yugi is my favorite out of all of them. It's 18 volumes long. The manga is wonderful. The anime only goes up to volume 13, the 18 volume series is fantastic. It's so romantic and touching... Volume 18... It's so romantic and amazing. The story is the main character goes into a book and meets her true love and boyfriend, Tamahome. It has love, romance, magic, excitement, so many amazing elements in a truly incredible manga series. The anime doesn't do it justice, only going up to volume 13. Read the 18 volumes. It's a incredible, romantic story. Fushigi Yuugi rocks. Ayashi no Ceres is second best, it has an amazign plot... the manga does. The anime changes everything and cuts out so many important scenes and changes the plot. The Ayashi no Ceres manga is so touching, romantic, sensual, magical. The anime takes out so much and makes it more dark and takes out the sweetness and maturity.

Since I don't watch too many anime anymore, thought I'd chime in on this old series that I DID watch. ^^
I watched the Fushigi Yuugi anime, read up on the manga (although not extensively, but I do know what happens plot-wise) and watched the OVA that covers the manga arc that the anime left off at.
My favourite part out of the series are the Seiryuu Seishi. The Suzaku were fine characters in their own right, but the Seiryuu completely stole my attention everytime they appeared on-screen. I loved the mystery that surrounded them, as well as the tense atmosphere in their camp amongst each other. I also noted with grim wryness that they, being the antagonists of the series, contained so many strange-looking characters whereas the Suzaku, being the protagonists, looked completely normal.
And... OMAIGAWD, Tomo. Yes, I love Tomo. Sure, he gets, like, six episodes to himself, and he's creepy and wears make-up and tried to rape Miaka, but I just love his character so much. It was the one moment-- when he apologised to Nakago for failing before dying-- that stole my fangirl heart.
A part of me was livid that we got so little screen-time for him, but another part enjoyed the mystery of his past (that, whenever touched on in fanfics by an author with a good grasp of his character, is positively brilliant to read about).
That he's so gorgeous behind the make-up is just an extra perk. I guess many fans would be so turned off by the opera make-up that they would instantly dislike him (on top of the other more founded reasons, such as his trying to rape a young girl...). First impressions are very important when determining who you like and give chances to, and Tomo doesn't always give a good first impression (unlike, say, the obviously good-looking-with-sordid-tortured-past Nakago, Amiboshi and Suboshi).
Anyway, um. Yes. I love Tomo, the Seiryuu Seishi and Seiryuu himself.

I can't really say I adored Miaka and Tamahome's love story(too sugar-loaded for me) but I loved a lot of the series' characters!

Yeah, I agree with you Lynn. Some of my favorite characters were in the Seiryuu- the twins, for starters! I had a sick fascination with Suboshi: even though I knew he was a bastard, I still couldn't help but be intrigued by his love and reckless protectiveness for his brother, and also by his infatuation with Yui. I could never bring myself to hate him, not even for killing Tamahome's family.
As for Amiboshi... he was impossible not to love. I loved him as "Chiriko" and when he 'outed' himself, I just melted when I saw that he was still such a sweetheart.

I agree, I wasn't deeply entrenched in the whole Miaka/Tamahome dynamic. I was already turned off that everybody seemed to fall in love with her, and their relationship didn't really stand out for me against the other characters'.
Although I give Watase credit for pairing them up together so early in the series (as opposed to many pairings who drag out the blushing/crushing moments through most of the series), it's a shame she couldn't keep it interesting, other than always breaking them up and bringing them back together again.
I actually enjoyed the second arc, though, with Miaka and Taka. I don't know why, since Taka and Tamahome are essentially the same person. It's rather like how I enjoy KH!Leon moreso than Squall.

Ah, the twins! Suboshi is my second favourite, after Tomo. I couldn't hate him for killing Tamahome's family either. I just felt really sad for him throughout the series-- moreso than for any other character in the series, actually-- and his goodbye to Yui in the real world was so powerful. If there's any pairing I actively support in FY, it would have to be Suboshi/Yui and twincest, fofofo.
Although Tetsuya... was that his name? ...was pretty cute too, but I couldn't shake off the feeling that he was conveniently paired up with Yui just because they're the best friends of Keisuke and Miaka respectively.
As for Amiboshi, I actually like him a lot. Sure, he's another one who fell for Miaka's magical charms, but for all that, he was an interesting character. I got turned off by fans who painted him as this absolute saint, though, especially when compared to Suboshi. He's a good guy, no doubt, but... I just don't like how Suboshi is branded the "evil" twin.
UsagiMamoru - April 5, 2006 05:59 PM (GMT)
I love Tamahome. I love Taka. I really love Tamahome's character. I love the entire manga and it brigns back so many memories. I always remember where I read each volume, at home, at a hotel, on a cruise, at school, in a secret room in my grandma's house, in a restaurant, in the car on a road trip, in a garden, on a train, on a bed, in class. It brings back so many special memories. I love all the series. I absolutely love and adore Tamahome. I love Taka, too. Tamahome rules!

Amiboshi isn't perfect...see 'evil' look on his face when tries to kill them all as 'Chiriko'.
I only saw the 1st OAV and it was all right...except for the final confrontation. They tried to cram too many characters in one scene and it didn't work :ermm: But I was glad to see Suboshi redeem himself, just a bit, and that bit o' brotherly fluff between the twins :)
I have a friend who loves Taka but hates Tamahome...how are they different anyway?
Lynn - April 6, 2006 02:04 PM (GMT)
I agree with Amiboshi not being goodness personified. That's why it irked me when some fans painted him as such.

To be honest, I've been out of the FY fandom for so long, I've sort of forgotten. I think what made me like him was the confusion he faced when learning of Tamahome. It kinda makes you (or him) wonder, if Miaka loves him because he's Taka, or because he's Tamahome-incarnate? I didn't see it as a clear-cut case of Tamahome = Taka, because Taka grew up with his own past and as his own person, yes?
So the angst was nice. :giggle:
There was also a very sad scene where spirit!Hotohori couldn't hold his son, Boushin, who if I recall correctly hadn't spoken a word since his father died. Taka stepped up and offered to let Hotohori inhabit his body (him having "less memories", or something like that, would've made it easier to Hotohori to take over compared to someone fully aware like Tasuki), and there was this very sweet scene of Hotohori!Taka holding Boushin. Boushin then said his first word. :fangirl:

I believe the 1st OVA wasn't written by Watase Yuu (the 2nd is based on the continuation of the storyline in the manga), and it contained a lot of problems. Storyline-problems, if I remember correctly. I can't for the life of me remember what they were now, but I know a lot of FY fans tended to ignore it when it came to continuity.
A shame, since Tomo was in it. I found it very strange that he would call his illusionary self "Kaen", since that's Soi's name and they were painted as rivals in the series.
I thought OVA 1 was all right too... It had the Seiryuu Seishi in it, so half the battle's won already. :P I got so attached to that enemy, that I never found the urge to connect to Tenkou, Ren and all the other new enemies that popped up in OVA 2.
...Hmm, maybe that's why I ended up liking Taka. No old enemies to distract me. :P

Awwww, that is so sweet! I don't think a fullyaware!Tamahome would have done that for Hotohori.

This all started off when I was bored in my Chemistry class and my best friend Chanel gave me a manga series to read called Fushigi Yuugi~Mysterious Play. I read and it really started to get interesting once the romance and drama REALLY began to unfold....
And now I'm still reading Fushigi Yuugi and I cant get enough of it...though I'm not done reading it. Then my best friend gave me another Fushigi Yuugi series except it was with Genbu Kaiden...Then I got lost.....
BUT ENOUGH ABOUT MY STORY ...
I know some of you have read this series before and this club is dedicated to all fans of Fushigi Yuugi the original manga/anime and Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden....You can post here your favorite characters and/or couples from either series if you like.
I'll tell you my fav. after I get some members here...Open disscussion and debates are free to all :gift:!
Enjoy! ^_^
By the way, if there's already a thread here on this clubs...close if you wish and let me know....Thanks!

Fushigi Yuugi is a great series. Fushigi Yugi is a great manga, it's much longer than the anime. Miaka and Tamahome are a great couple. Miaka and Tamahome are so perfect together. Tamahome and Taka are great characters. Tamahome is wonderful as Taka and as Tamahome. There are so many romantic kisses, I love how they get together early on and have lots of couple moments. Tamahome and Taka are great characters. Miaka and Tamahome are a wonderful couple. Sign me up! I like both series. Miaka and Tamahome forever! Tamahome and Taka is a wonderful character.

Tee-hee..Miaka and Tamahome are indeed a sweet couple..even though I'm am a fan of another pair . (I get into that later) But I still love TamahomexMiaka so I'm still with you.
I agree with the romance meetings. These two have some sort of burning passion for each other, espescially Tamahome :giggle:. As a matter of fact, it's because of them why I continue reading Fushigi Yuugi.
Miaka is like me- a pig when it comes to food. And I love her moments when she has this dying appetite for something to eat!. And then she's being the Priestess of Suzaku, and it's giving her pressure when it comes to certain times...
(Now I will REALLY love to get into details after that part, but I dont want to spoil in case if someone hasn't read MOST of Fushigi Yuugi...unless they tell me...)
As I was saying before. I think Hotohori and Miaka make a cuter couple. Why? I really just love the way Hotohori is always willing to give his life just to devote himself to her. Not as the emperor but as a man....And whenever something oges wrong between Tamahome and Miaka (when it's usually not their fault), Miaka could always find comfort in Hotohori's arms....He loves her too you know..
But its also sad...Miaka just continues to push him away, since Tamahome had won her heart first...But I just think they should at least get a chance....
You know what..I'm more of in favor of the Love triangle between TamahomexMiakaxHotohori :P. But all opinions are welcome! As soon as more people join and reply..the better the discussions ^_^.
So welcome UsagiMamoru!

*thinks* I could've sworn there's a FY club, or maybe it was a FY character club... Here it is.So that the recent posts don't go to waste, I'll merge this thread with the original club. :)

Heh... I'd say it's despite their romance that I continued following FY. :shifty: But I'll keep any further comments on that to a more suitable thread.
Hotohori gets brownie points for being teh bishie who dragged my interest into the series. I can't remember how, but I stumbled onto a shrine for him (anybody remember it? I believe it was created by Kai Ling) and was totally smitten by this gorgeous emperor. FY hadn't reached my country yet, so all I could do was read up on the series, stare at screenshots and curse the powers that be for all the DBZ/Sailor Moon that was being shown instead.
After I actually watched the anime for myself, I ended up being a Seiryuu fan. I thought it was extremely biased for Watase Yuu to make all the good Suzaku handsome humans, but the Seiryuu got a floating baby-head monk and a half-animal/man hybrid that eats other humans. Yes, Watase, I get that these are the bad guys. It really annoyed me that these two, plus Tomo, got so little backstory to them and seemed just thrown in to fill up the seven--the Seiryuu who DID take up most of the screentime were also humans--still, fandom came to the rescue and their blank pasts were filled with awesome fanfics.
The Genbu Gaiden you refer to is a separate novel about the Genbu seishi. Just like separate novels were published after the anime/manga finished about certain Suzaku and Seiryuu seishi (Nakago [with Soi and Tomo playing prominent roles], Amiboshi and Suboshi, Chichiri all got their own Gaiden... I can't remember if Tamahome and Nuriko got them, but they should've). I didn't follow most of the novels, and after reading how awful they made Tomo in Nakago's novel, I didn't want to. :P
Favourite characters: Tomo, Suboshi, Soi.
UsagiMamoru - December 1, 2006 06:18 PM (GMT)
Miaka and Tamahome were a wonderful couple in the manga. When he became Taka in the second part of the series, it became even better. Tamahome and Miaka are a wonderful couple in the manga and the manga version of the second part of the series when he is Taka showed how much they matured and it's very romantic. The sex scene, the second one, when he is Taka and they are in bed together is done so perfectly and it's really romantic. Tamahome and Taka are wonderful characters.
