Title: Tidus's Name
Description: TIE-dus or TEE-dus

BlurryBlueMoon - February 13, 2006 10:18 PM (GMT)
What do you think is the correct way to pronounce it? I've even heard, Tidius.. *blinks*

Personally, I think TEE-dus is correct because in Kindgom Hearts, I even heard Wakka say his name that way.

Key - February 13, 2006 11:14 PM (GMT)
I always pronounced it "TEE-dus" because his Japanese name is "TEE-dah" and... Ionno, it just sounds closer to that than "TIE-dus" does.

I never really stopped to think of the reference to the tide waters. x.X

Alan Bates - February 14, 2006 01:24 AM (GMT)
TEE-Dus. That's how everybody I've talked to has said his name.

Yukari - February 14, 2006 01:40 AM (GMT)
TIE-dus. I know it's supposed to be pronounced TEE-dus, like you said, Wakka pronounces it that way in Kingdom Hearts, but it just sounds weird to me. So I prefer to call him TIE-dus.

Real_Emotion - February 14, 2006 01:51 AM (GMT)
Same with me. I always thought Tidus was pronounced 'TIE-dus' in reference to water/tide. I mean, its easy to affiliate water with Tidus. Blitzball... the spring scene... he came back in X-2 in water... so...

And, 'TEE-dus' sounded weired to me too. It sounded too feminine for a guys name, IMHO.

So, you're basically saying that it fits him perfectly. :P

guerilla radio - February 14, 2006 02:42 AM (GMT)
Ive always said TIE-DUS, just because thats how you pronounce Tidus in America.. and I've always said it. Most people say its TEE-DUS and I bet they're right, i just like calling him TIE-DUS more and I won't stop calling him that even if its wrong. :D

:lmao:

Well, I didn't think Tidus was that feminine. He striked me more as a jock with a soft side and talked a wee bit too much.

Paladin's Heart - February 14, 2006 06:24 AM (GMT)
Tie-dus. I this its sounds really weird that his name is like "Tee-dus". <_<

Schala - February 14, 2006 11:13 PM (GMT)
I always pronounced it "Tee-dus" but it still sounds weird. The way Wakka said it in KH sounded odd to me though. I wonder why they chose that name for him like how I wonder why Zidane was 'Zidane.'

UsagiMamoru - February 15, 2006 12:13 AM (GMT)
I pronounce it TIE-dus. I know it's pronounced Teedus, but it doesn't sound right, so I procounce it Tiedus anyway, like tidal, tiedus. Tidus. Back when FFX first came out, I always pronounced it Tiedus, then years later KH came out and said Teedus and I'm like, no! Don't screw it up! I always used the pronounciation, Tie-dus. TIE-dus.

goddess_in_pink07 - February 15, 2006 01:02 AM (GMT)
The whole time i played the game, i thought it was Tie-dus! :D
Tee-dus just sounds kinda weird.

I prefere Tie-dus, just because it sounds better.

Pyra Kurai Akaidra - February 16, 2006 10:18 AM (GMT)
At first, I called him Tee-dus just to annoyed my sister who called him 'Tie-dus', because we argued which one is the right one. Then...she get me to called him Tie-dus. Until I found out it's actually Tee-dus and I was like 'HAH!'. :P

MistaCloudStrife - February 16, 2006 04:57 PM (GMT)
Before the game even came out, just when there were the two pictures of Tidus and Yuna and they had the huge sin picture in the back of the FINAL FNATASY X cover, in stead of both Yuna and Sin, I pronouced it TIDE-US.

Then a month or two before it was released, VG magazines came out with previews of it and confirmed his name was pronouced Tee-dus. So before the game came out I was pronouncing it correctly. Thank goodness.

Now "Yuffie" I didn't know how to pronouce intil Kingdom Hearts. o.O;

Meggie - February 17, 2006 10:15 PM (GMT)
I always call him TIE-DUS because it sounds better than TEE-DUS :fangirl:

afterglow - February 18, 2006 01:44 PM (GMT)
At first I thought it was "tie-dus" but after hearing the way Wakka pronounced his name in KH, i started pronouncing it as "tee-dus".

Paladin's Heart - March 30, 2006 10:32 PM (GMT)
In KHII, Selphie says "Ty-dus".

Really!

Key - March 31, 2006 08:36 AM (GMT)
Yeh, they changed his name pronunciation in KHII to TIE-DUS from TEE-DUS. I still prefer the latter (since that's how I'm used to saying it) but o well... guess we can't all be winners on this one. XD~

Evenstar - March 31, 2006 09:29 AM (GMT)
I always called him TEE-DUS because I've read info in magazines back when it was still in production that his Japanese name was Tida (TEE-DAH).

But in KHI Wakka pronouced his name like "TEE-DIS" when he mentioned to Sora that they were going to do some exploring of the secret place.

pink_ribbon07 - April 3, 2006 04:34 PM (GMT)
i prefer TIE-dus more!

Becuase i have never heard TEE-dus and it doesnt sound right!!!
But that is my opinion!!! :aeris:

Scott - April 3, 2006 07:12 PM (GMT)
Tie-dus is always how I pronounced it. I've only ever heard it differently on the bonus disk with FF X where the voice actor says Tee-dus.

Tee-dus annoys me, when someone says that to me, I respond by saying Tie-dus and put the emphasis on "tie" :P

Tacofoolio - April 3, 2006 09:36 PM (GMT)
I don't know anymore! I started with Tiedus, switched to Teedus, now with KH2 saying Tiedus, I'm very torn! Maybe I'll just call him Dude.

NekoDono - April 13, 2006 08:48 PM (GMT)
I have been talking to my brother some about it. My brother takes Latin 2 right now so I asked him how it is pronounced in Latin since it seemed kind of like Latin to me. He and I have always said Tee-Dus but he said in Latin it would be Tid-us. (Yes, you may giggle like I did.) BUT he believes that the real way to say it is Tie-Dus, yet we have chosen to keep saying it as Tee-Dus. Tee hee! ^^

AmayaSaria - April 17, 2006 04:25 AM (GMT)
I know in the first KH game they said Tee-dus, but I'm pretty sure in KH2 Selphie (or Kairi, I don't remember which) Said Tie-dus.

My brother was always like "but in all SE interviews they say Tee-dus, so its official!"

I guess SE caved in during KH2.

Anyway, I prefer Tie-dus.

EDIT- Yep, I double-checked. Selphie says "Tie-dus" in KH2. (even if it is only once, she does say Tie-dus!

daydreamer198 - April 17, 2006 04:28 AM (GMT)
I used to think it was Tie-dus too. It just sounded better and made more sense.

I also thought Tifa was pronounced Tiff-fah, not Tee-fah, and that Reno was pronouced Ren-no, not Ree-no -_-

Love Blossom - April 17, 2006 06:56 AM (GMT)
Tie-dus. I beleive Wacka only called Tidus Tee-dus in KH1 is because of his accent. He is Hawaiian, after all. *shrugs*

I say Tee-fa and Ree-no, though it's Reh-no, I think. (atleast that's how it sounded in the Japanese version) I don't like Ree-no for some reason.

Wasn't Tidus' Japanese name "Tida"? Evenstar brought it up earlier, but confirmation would be nice since I'm not the least bit caught up on FFX news. :P Anyway, that would explain why Wakka pronounced it as "Tee-" and not "Tie-" in Japanese, which they probably brought over into the English version of KH1.

My guess about them changing it to "Tie-dus" in KH2's English version is because of fan-reaction.

I've always used "Tie-dus" myself, and "Tee-fa", "Yoo-fee" and "Ree-no".

Anti-R - April 20, 2006 01:25 AM (GMT)
The word Tiida is the Okinawan word for "sun"
The word Yuna is the Okinawan word for "moon"

So, I too call Tidus "Teedus"

Luna-Nayru - April 20, 2006 03:07 AM (GMT)
I've been using "Tee-dus" and "Yooh-fee" since KH. I hadn't played FFX or FFVII, but I never would have guessed those. Just knowing me, I think I would have stuck with my western instincts and pronounced them "TIE-dus" and "YUH-fee" if I just saw them written. :D

But, yeah, I'm one of those who pronounced Tifa "Tiffa," as in "Tiffany." Kind of sounds awkward now that I hear it "TEE-fah," but I'm trying to get used to it. And Reno has always been "Ree-noh." Score, I got one right! :woot:

Sadhana - April 20, 2006 04:21 AM (GMT)
I always pronounced it Tie-dus. I didn't even realize there was another way to say it  . Then again, I also didn't know that Tifa was pronounced Tee-fa until I saw Advent Children. I always assumed it to be Tiffa.

What's the correct way to say Jenova? I always said it so it rhymes with Jehovah (I figured there was supposed to be some sort of ironic connection there). But I've heard a lot of people say it Jeno-vah. Is there a right way?

Tifa has always been "Tee-fah" to me...and I've always pronounced Reno as "Ree-noh" (though I don't think it's how the Japanese would pronounce it). I'll have to admit that I call Tidus "Tie-dus". I didn't realize I wasn't pronouncing it correctly until I took Japanese. Meh, I'm so used to calling him Tie-dus, that I still call him that. :P

Going back to Reno, don't the Japanese pronounce it as "Ray-noh" (LAY-noh, if we want to get technical)? The RE makes a "RAY" sound, doesn't it? *looks to Anti-R for some kind of confirmation*

I think Jeno-vah is the way it was pronounced in AC by the Japanese. I guess if we really wanted to get technical, we could say that's the correct way to pronounce it...only 'cos the Japanese were the ones who created the word.

His name is written レノ... so it's pronounced Reh-no.

seventhe - April 20, 2006 04:41 PM (GMT)
How do you pronounce Zidane?

Hades' Daughter - April 20, 2006 06:29 PM (GMT)
Well, Cloud is Kuraudo in romanji Japanese...
Zidane, unless it's spelled differently in romanji Japanese...would probably be something like:

Zeedah-nay

Zeedah-nay?

Well, many people have been telling me that it's pronouced ZI-dane. But I always said it as ZY-dane.

Pyra Kurai Akaidra - April 23, 2006 12:35 AM (GMT)
Same here, always pronounce Zidane 'Zi-dane', after me and my sis settle on that one after much debating.

NekoDono - April 23, 2006 05:22 PM (GMT)
Really I've gotten some right and others wrong.

Tifa - I always thought it was Tee-fuh but my dad says Tifa is a pet form of Tiffany and pronounced Tiff-uh. In KH2 (I think. I beat it a while ago) they call her Tee-fuh. Score for me.

Tidus - Oh, I already explained!

Raijin and Fuujin - Excuse me for my stupidity but for some unknown reason I have always said Raw-jin and Foo-jin. When I know it is Rye (like the bread)-jin. Or is it Ray-jin? This is gonna drive me nuts...

Seifer - Now that one I got right but for a long time I wasn't sure.

Zidane - not sure how they would pronounce it but it is a real name and is pronounced Zi-don but I still say Zi-Dane.

Trepe - That's Quistis's last name just to tell and is one of those things that confuse me. I say Trep-eh but my french teacher, Madame Miller, says it is pronounced Trape. It's similar to crepe apparently.

Rinoa - This has been a debate for forever between my friends. I say Rai-Noe-Uh. My friend Rin-oh-uh.

Reno - I always said it Ree-noh. (like Reno, Nevada). I guess that's another point for me. lol

I dunno. Those are some that have bothered me.

ZIDANE:
Personally, I pronounce it as Zee-dain.
In the Japanese language though, the 'e' at the end is never silent. They would pronounce the 'ne' as 'nay'.

However, it all really depends on how 'Zidane' is spelled in romanji Japanese. Again, in romanji, the spelling of Cloud's name changes to K-U-R-A-U-D-O.
Zidane would only be Zeedah-nay in Japanese if the romanji spelling of his name remained the same.
