Beren and Luthien of JRR Tolkien's Silmarillion. In the midst of the grim story of the Elves of the First Age, there was a sense of illumination from this said story. So strong is their love, it literally defies death itself.

Oh, I recommend The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. The first half is pretty raunchy ( ^^; ), but it gets really sad after that. I guess it's the whole idea of how two people are absolutely meant to be together, and yet how they can doing nothing about being constantly torn apart. I love how he always ends up time travelling to be by her side, even though he really has no control over where he goes. It makes me think of Cloud popping into all those Square Enix spin-offs. :lol: I love the book, plus she quotes lots of lovely poems along the way.

Not sure if you'll agree, but the Film 'What Dreams May Come' is about death and still watching over the one you love after death, and freeing them from the afterlife as well as reincarnation.

^^; I loved that film.

Vanilla Sky is abit Clorith-y, when she says to him "We'll meet in another life, when we are cats!" sounds like something Aerith would say to Cloud X3 The film itself is abit strange though.

I found a rather Cleris-y fairytale from my book The Brocaded Slipper and other Vietnamese Tales.
It's called The Fairy Grotto and it's about a young man who meets the girl of his dreams only to lose her, possibly forever...
Kinda hard to explain in a few words so I'll share some excerpts...

With a start, he realized how late it had grown. Today was the day of the Flower Festival-the day when people came from all over the countryside to visit the temple gardens and to celebrate the beauty of the springtime. Of course the main attraction would always be, as it always was, the giant peonies that bloomed like flowers from fairyland on the bush that had suddenly sprung up some years before beside the entrance to the temple

On that day, he catches his guards holding a young girl captive in his garden. Mesmerized by her beauty, he tells them to let her go.

[the guards] bent down to cut the girl's bonds. Now she was free and she was thanking him, but he scarcely heard her words. Standing there in the moonlight, she could have been one of the flowers in human form- a lily perhaps or a lotus blossom. Then suddenly she was gone; he, too, turned as if in a trance, and made his way out of the garden and toward his home.

After the girl leaves, he finds himself somehow being drawn to a certain place, where he feels she must be waiting...

He had no destination in mind. Through field and forest he wandered across streams and over mountains, along lakes and rivers...

...some strange power seemed to draw him onward. Then he turned a sharp corner and found himself standing in sunlight. But it was a sunlight brighter than he had ever known before, and it dazzled him. As his eyes adjusted, he saw he was in a garden lovelier than he had ever seen or imagined, filled with flowers of ever color of the rainbow.

A girl dressed in fairy robes like rose petals stood before him, her eyes shining like diamonds and her face pink with blushes under her golden headdress, a bridal headdress. He felt himself almost ready to swoon with joy as he recognized the girl he had met in the garden

They are wed and he spends many happy days with her:

The days that followed were ones of unspeakable joy. Week followed week as with her beside him, all his wildest dreams came true. Each hour followed the one before it like a rosary of never-ending delights as they enjoyed the beauty of the flowers, the splendors of the fairy palace and the joy of each other's companionship

Sadly, like a certain other couple we know, they are separated from each other and he gets sent back to the world of men, almost certainly never to return to her again.
The story, however, ends on a bittersweet note. He is on the verge of despair, when suddenly...

His hand squeezed over something he was holding. Her letter. Eagerly, he broke the seal and unrolled it. The message was brief and he read it through tears. "How can one find my fairy mountain in the vast ocean? How hard it will be for the two of us to meet again!"
He remembered his lady's words on their wedding day: "Surrounded on all sides by the sea, our land does not touch the water's surface but hovers just above the waves, appearing and disappearing from view as it is driven about by the winds and the clouds" He had found it once, only because he had happened to glance up at just the right moment as the clouds formed the lotus cluster on the horizon. Could he hope to be so fortunate again? She had spoken correctly- in the short life allotted to humans, one could scarcely hope to find the land of the fairies once, let alone a second time.
Then her parting words came back to him: "Promise me that when you read the letter, you won't forget me"
He rose to his feet. Pulling his coat around him, he picked up his walking stick and walked down the road that led from the village toward the mountains.
He would spend the rest of his life searching- searching for the land of his dreams. Someday, he knew, he would find the lotus cloud again. And when the mountain parted,she would be standing there, her arms outstretched, waiting for him

Oooh I have one to suggest! The other day I was watching tv with my mum and she was watching this chinese movie titled 'My left eye can see ghosts'.

It's about this woman who's husband died - but instead of getting reborn, he chose to stay around as a spirit, to protect his living wife. He helps her when she's in trouble, comes to her aid when she needs it, and becomes her pillar of strength. ^_^ She's really sad about his death and tries so hard to see him again, and one day she finds out that she can see ghosts with her left eye.

So her husband uses the appearance of her childhood friend to get close to her in order to protect her. In the end, he tells her how she can see her husband (him) again (because she doesn't know it's him) and she stands and cries out to the ocean that she really wants to see him and really misses him.

He then takes her to the place where he would be reborn, and tells her that he is her husband, then goes to be reborn.

Everyone around her tells her to let him go, to move on with life etc etc, and she meets her childhood friend again, and even he encourages her to move on.

The ending is she wakes up and finds lots and lots and lots of flowers on her balcony, by some miraculous way her dead husband managed to bring to her, and her childhood friend supporting her, but they do not move on together. ^_^ And the woman thanks her husband and keep him in her heart.

^_^ I own LadyHawke...and since people don't seem to know very much about it, I'll give you a little insight! It's one of my favorites!

This is what the back of the DVD says:

Ladyhawke is the enchanting tale of a beauty, a knight, and a pickpocket known as the Mouse. Once the knight and the lady were lovers. Now the curse of an evil Bishop keeps them "always together, eternally apart." By day she is a hawk, by night he is a wolf. To end the evil spell, the knight vows to break into the Bishop's stronghold. With help from the Mouse.

It's really a beautiful story. The most agonizing part though, is that when night changes to day, just before the sun fully rises, there's a moment where the two lovers can nearly touch, but at that moment, she turns into the hawk again, and he from part wolf back to a human (he changes as the sun rises, as soon as the sun touches either, they turn into their counterparts).

If you guys get a chance, pick it up, you wont be disappointed. It's old, and might be a little hard to find, but it's definately worth it!

There is an obscure Jim Jarmusch film starring Johnny Depp called Deadman. It's a pretty good film but it is kind of slow.


SPOLIER:

In the film, there is a town called Machine. Depp's character meets a flower girl who is being bullied. This flower girl resembles Aerith in a way, and like Aerith, she dies tragically while sacrificing herself to save the protaganist. Oh and by the way, at the end the main character travels to the afterlife(promised land).
