Title: How Do You Pronounce Aeris?
Description: I've heard it a few different ways...

Aeris - November 25, 2004 01:22 AM (GMT)
These are the ways I've heard it pronounced... so, how do YOU pronounce it?

Air-iss
Air-eez
Air-iz

I say Air-eez, like the horiscope Aries, but the correct one is Air-iss.

FF_Goddess - November 25, 2004 02:01 AM (GMT)
I think "Aeris" is pronounced like the word "heiress". It makes sense, since she is the last Cetra, and the true heir to the planet. ^_^

:D The first time I played the game I called her Aeris like Aries too! I'm so used to calling her that that I have to remind myself to pronounce it right.

Onigiri - November 25, 2004 03:44 AM (GMT)
Aah, its suppose to be pronounced Air-iss?
Well I'm trying to say it like the original "Aerith" but I sometimes forget and pronounce it as I used to, like Aries.

Marionette - November 25, 2004 09:21 AM (GMT)
I pronounce Aerith (air-e-th) No I don't have a lisp   I just find it easier to pronounce In a weird way think it has to do with my Greek accent.

Tifa Lockheart - November 25, 2004 10:27 AM (GMT)
I pronounce it: Eris.
Sometimes I hear Zhakeena and the others pronounce it as: Ey-ris.

Wasn't Aries the god of war or something. Or was it Ares? ^_^

I can't remember how the pronounced Aerith Kingdom Hearts, if they did at all. My memory is failing me, but I seem remember that they never actually said her name in the spoken dialogue.

Sefie - November 25, 2004 04:21 PM (GMT)
It's pronounced air-is because of the two vowels at the beginning. And Aerith wouldn't be pronounced with a "th" anyways because in the Japanese language there is no "th" sound, so it's air-is no matter how you spell it. And it kanji it's spelled without the th anyways, Aerisu.

Have wilhelm explain the "th" problem because he can explain it much better than I ever could. If I remember his explanation correctly (I wish I'd copied it down), he's said that the "th" at the end of her name does not mean it should be pronounced as an "s", and that it was a translation error that turned her name into "Aeris".

I've seen Square use both "Aeris" and "Aerith", so I consider both forms of her name to be acceptable. I've always called her Air-ith, though. I just think it's prettier than Aeris.

That just sounds akward to me.

But that might be simply beacuse my mother language is so weird, so I've used to pronounce things in a very different way.

wilhelm - November 25, 2004 06:47 PM (GMT)
Since Japanese doesn't have the 'th' sound in the language (like they don't have English 'l' sounds), it has to be replaced by 's/z' sounds. 'Thrill' becomes 'suriru', 'the' becomes 'za', and so on. But was still supposed to be 'th', given that's the English name Square gave (as seem to have choosen for the English releases like Kingdom Hearts). If Aerith's name should be like sounds in Japanese (earisu, 'air-rees'), then we'd be playing a game following the Ex-Sorujaa Croudo as he journeys with the anti-Shinra organization "ABARANCH" chasing after the now insane Sefiros.

:P Bully. I still like Aeris better

Andina - November 25, 2004 10:37 PM (GMT)
I don't think I could ever learn to speak Japanese, as what Wilhelm just explained there is starting to be bit too much. Why oh why must everything be so complicated in this world.

Onigiri - November 25, 2004 10:40 PM (GMT)
Yeah, Square intended those names not to be 'japanese' names, so it doesn't go accordingly to japanese pronounciation. It'd be weird speaking english and suddenly pronouncing Cloud's name as "kuraud"
But as the correct way to pronounce their names - I wonder what it is. Was it suppose to be english name? Or greek? or...something else? (I wonder if her name is really something 'common' in some country?)
Though Aerith's name was never said in dialog, I guess we will have to wait and see in the english release of AC. (Unless they only refer to her as 'she' or 'her' <_<)

Anastar - November 26, 2004 12:08 AM (GMT)
Her name was spoken by Squall (Leon) in Kingdom Hearts when he spoke to Sora for the first time after they fight in Traverse Town. The game script shows it:

Leon: Sooner or later, the Heartless will find you. You'd best prepare yourself.
Sora: Prepare yourself?
Leon: To fight for your life. Are you ready?
Sora: I'm ready!
Leon: (to Yuffie) Yuffie, let's go join Aerith. She should be there by now with the other visitors.
Yuffie: Leon!
Suddenly, a Heartless Soldier appeared.
Leon: Yuffie, go!

It was pronounced "Air-ith".

A r i s like i mean when u were younger and you were first learning the letter A like if you were screaming like AHHHHHH (lol sorry) do u know the kind of A i mean probably not its really hard to explain but now i realise i've pronounced it wrong :(

MistaCloudStrife - April 9, 2007 08:45 PM (GMT)
The original Japanese FFVII instruction book had the name written down as Aerith.

In Japanese, the way they pronounce the "th" comes out, "tsu" or "su"... So it would basically come out pronounced as "Aeris" ("Air-ihs" or more accurately "air-ri-su).

Now just because it would be pronounced that way in Japanese doesn't actually make it correct to pronounce it that way in English. Let's take for example an English word. If a Japanese person were to say for example, "thoughtful"... it would come out something similar to "soh-toh-fu-ru"... The "T-H" sound is changed to a "Su" sound and the "L" is replaced with an "R" sound. Now I doubt that they wanted the spelling of Aerith, to be pronouced Aeris. Yes, it may be similar to how they would pronounce it in Japan, but if the name "Aeris" was really a mistake then we've just been making fun of the way the Japanese have been saying Aerith this entire time. Yay. >_>

Mako Soldier CS - April 9, 2007 09:28 PM (GMT)
I've always pronounced it like Air-ris. But I don't say Aeris anymore. I say Aerith. A-rith.

Heavens Cloud - April 9, 2007 11:36 PM (GMT)
I used to say it like iris... I always thought, when I first started to play the game, that her name and character resembled an iris flower (don't know why... they are purple, and she wears pink lol! I was young, and didn't know much at that time :P). But now I kind of bounce back and forth between Air-iss and Air-ith... I like em both lol! :D

afterglow - April 15, 2007 03:08 AM (GMT)
I have always pronounced it as "Air-iss"/ "Airith". However, I remember hearing Mena Suvari pronouncing Aerith as "eh-rith" in one of her KH interviews. So...i don't really know which is which. Hehe.
