Rufus ShinRa - November 19, 2005 04:53 PM (GMT)
omg this game is great, Im having so much fun with it..
and for the XII demo, its great I cant wait to play the full ver. lol
XII maybe the best FF :P^^
Kaldea - November 19, 2005 08:47 PM (GMT)
I have the demo of it. It's pretty good but I'd get it if someone got it for me.
Schala - November 22, 2005 12:55 AM (GMT)
I got a demo of it too, from Shonen Jump, and I thought that it was an awesome game! Of course, I'll be absolutely broke once I get all the games I intend to get, but when I've got money to spare, I'd go get Dragon Quest!
FFXII may be the best FF? Wow, that's really high praise. But you know what? I hope will be too.
Lesca - November 23, 2005 12:18 AM (GMT)
I have no idea when it will come out in the UK...if ever >.< I only want it for the FFXII demo o.o
From what I seen of the demo and the game so far it's gonna be something good ^_^
Ally McBeal - November 24, 2005 12:51 PM (GMT)
 WHY THE MAJOR PART of d.quest games..the main heros looks like gohan or goku?(damn you tori!) why not vegeta....well i guees vegeta is too hot have clons
Schala - November 27, 2005 08:22 PM (GMT)
I love Akira Toriyama's style! I guess Goku has the 'good guy' look that fits the hero more. If you mean Crono from Chrono Trigger, I think he looked really good with a Goku-ish design. But didn't Magus look like Vegeta?
Real_Emotion - November 29, 2005 03:29 AM (GMT)
I finally bought the game and played like an hour of it. It's pretty good so far. Though, I have to admit the beginning of it is kinda boring and starts off slow. It almost made me fall asleep as I was playing it. The battle system felt a little weird at first, but I got used to it. My only little peeve is with the battles. It's almost like the enemies throw everything at you at once even early into the game when your character is pretty weak. This is the first time I had to rely greatly on healing items so early in the game
I suppose it gives the battles more challenge, but this is kinda annoying after a while and always having to spend money on tons of healing items. And sometimes the camera works like rubbish, IMO.
I like the art style. Akira Toriyama has always been one of my favorite artists. Her style was always unique compared to other anime artist. The 'Hero' looks kinda like Pre-Teen(Cell Saga) Gohan- only a little older. Jessica looks like Pre-Teen(End of DBZ) Marron with red hair. There is also a guy who looks like Trunks with silver/white hair. Oh! And the toad looking character looks like Godo from the Freeza saga.
Hades' Daughter - December 11, 2005 04:37 PM (GMT)
Hrmms...iono, guys. I was never a fan of DBZ style characters. It's pretty much the only reason why I don't already own DQ8. However, Chrono Trigger totally owns me, thanks to its awesome plot/storyline.
Someone, convince me that the storyline of DQ8 is awesome and worth playing, please...? :(
Lynn - December 28, 2005 07:54 AM (GMT)
I'm not much of a fan of DBZ-style characters too. Even though I own the game, I haven't started it yet due to the weird feeling of playing Gohan in a RPG.
But there's gotta be a reason why DQ was so popular in Japan that the government had to restrict playing it so that people would actually attend school/go to work/etc.... and I will find out why!
...After I finish KH2 and Suikoden Tactics. :hide:
Ally McBeal - December 28, 2005 12:31 PM (GMT)
d.quest..is by far more popular in japan than FF..i read it in vairous magazines o.o
Lynn - December 28, 2005 04:28 PM (GMT)
So have I. That's my guess why Enix has never really bothered to branch out internationally, because they're making tons of moolah in Japan itself.
I found it very amusing when some Squaresoft fans looked down on Enix last time. While FF rules the RPG scene internationally, DQ is like a giant compared to it in Japan.

Well, according to my friend who's played 40 hours into the game, it's apparently just been about the heroes chasing down this guy who'd turned the king (or somebody or other) into a frog. She gave up on the game when it didn't look like any plot twists would be happening.
I'm not so sure that IS everything (she tends to summarise things a lot  ). And assuming I finish that game in time, I'll let you know how it turns out. ^^
Real_Emotion - December 29, 2005 05:29 PM (GMT)
It's best to look up reviews of the game in the internet. That's what I did and it eventually presuaded me to get the game. And I'm glad I did.
The story is interesting. In the beginning of the game, it basically feels like your just hunting down Dhoulmagus simply because he turned King Trode and Princess Medea into what they presently are. But as the story progresses you find out there is more to the story. Each character has their own motive why they want to stop Dhoulmagus. Spoilers ahead... Jessica want to kill Dhoulmagus because he killed her brother in a very gruesome way. Angelo want to kill Dhoulmagus because he killed the Friar of the Abbey he grew up in and the Friar was basically like a father to Angelo since he was orphaned as a child. The Hero is basically following orders from the king, who 'saved' his life. And finally Yangus(<3) is doing this because he doing it as a favor to The Hero, who Yangus respects a lot since he saved his life, too. As you go on a LONG goose chase throughout the world looking for the crazy jester, you, as the player, really gain a strong motive to defeat Dhoulmagus. He's a power hungry villian who will stop at nothing to gain even more power to rule the world. He kills everyone that stands in his way. Even an old man??! Poor Friar guy... he was really nice. ;_; Plus, in my opinion... he's annoying as hell... his laugh reminds me of my brother and that's enough reason for me. lol :D
The game is really fun and has kept me occupied for the hours... 40 hours to be exact and I'm only somewhere in the middle I think. The characters are amusing. Yangus is by far is my favorite. He's the comic relief, but he's so funny and is great when it comes to the battles. At first I didn't like Jessica, but I'm warming up to her. She a strong character, but stubborn as hell. What's up with her some of her attacks though?? Lady's Thong? Queen's Thong? And she's the only character that actually changes what she can wear for... obvious reasons. *cough*exposedskin*cough* Angelo is the only character I don't like. <_< I usually like the outgoing-flirty-lady's man- characters(OMIGOSH ATTON!!! *swoon swoon swoon*<3), but I think he over does it to the point where he's just comes out as annoying.
I really do reccommend playing the game. It's really fun, the story is good, amusing characters, challenging battles, and it provides long hours of game play. At first glance, it looks really kiddish, but it really did deserve the 'Teen' rating. *cough* VA-VA-VOOM, anyone? :lmao: And lastly... MUNCHIE PWNS ALL!!
Rikkulicious - January 3, 2006 08:06 AM (GMT)
I can't believe there's a thread for this! I got this game for Christmas and I can't turn away from it! :lmao: :lmao:
First of all...I'm like 3/4 way done, and second of all, my long ass essay about dah game...
When the game first started off, I didn't think I'd like it at all, it started off a bit different, really slow. And the first boss requires SERIAZ leveling up, and to add onto that; save points aren't next to/after the bosses anymore! The dungeons in this game are actually really good in my opinion, some of them get tedious though...
My favorite characteristic of RPGs is the characters, which is what kept me really interested, each of them is very unique, and they're all developed nicely and stand out. First of all, the Hero, which is what annoyed me the most, yes, another one of those SILENT heroes who just CAN'T talk AT ALL! At least NPCs TALK! ....Convo between NPC and Hero...
Hero: ......
NPC: ~sigh~ Times are tough...
Hero: ......
NPC: ~sigh~ Times are tough...
Hero: ......
Now onto the INTERESTING characters! :D Yangus, obviously a hilarious comedy relief, is really the only one of the characters who don't have a reason to go after Dhoulmagus, he's only there 'cause the Hero (or 'Guv' as he calls him) saved his life. ^_^ Yangus is an ex-bandit now turned good, the 'thief with a heart of gold' if you will, as Angelo pointed this out (you can press 'start' to have a chat with any of your charas at any time you like, makes the funniest convos ever), it's really hard to believe Yangus is an ex-bandit because he always seems so good-natured and naive! Actually, Yangus is gonna have his own spin-off (prequel? sequel?) called Dragon Quest: Yangus, exploring his past more, since where I am in the game, his past seems a little vague...
Jessica, I have bias for her because her name is my real name! :D Honestly, at first I was worried, though, she's the only female character in the main cast, I was certain she'd either be a brainless bitch or a Mary Sue. I saw it all coming, she was so gonna fall for the Hero, 'cause EVERY main female in EVERY RPG falls for the main hero...
But she didn't! HUZZAH!! And she's not a brainless bitch, either! She has a good balance, and enough faults to not make her a Mary Sue. She's brave, independant, arrogant, confident, a bit of a tomboy, and stubborn. But at the same time, I didn't like her in the beginning 'cause she seemed to just be fan service, what with her giant life-affirming jumblies, which jiggle at every known second. >_<
Onto my favorite character (HOW COULD YOU NOT LIKE HIM, R_E?! ;_;), Angelo! The bishie of the group! <3 Confident, gambling, drinking, flirtatious, anti-social Templar knight! :D He out of everyone in the group, gives the best responses when you try and talk to him, always giving you a good laugh, then yet at the same time not just there for comedic relief. For instance...
Jessica: "You know, I wonder what Dhoulmagus is like? I mean, I know he's a bad guy. But what's he LIKE?"
Yangus: "Yeah, it'd be a bit of a turn up for the books if 'e was actually a bloomin' good bloke, eh!?"
Angelo: "Ha ha! 'Laughing Killer Revealed to be "Good Bloke"!' Very likely! 'When not busy murdering, Mr. Dhoulmagus spends his spare time working for charity. He also regularly donates his ill-gotten gains to a number of worthy causes…'"
Then there's a scene where an NPC is at a Church, praying aloud about his love for a nun while the Hero and Angelo are standing behind him...
Man praying: “Oh, dear sister! You look so beautiful when you pray! Too beautiful! Dear Goddess, what should a poor soul such as I do, now I have fallen for one of your flock?”
Angelo: ~angelic voice~ “Confess! Even when you are racked with self-doubt, have faith in Her divine benevolence. The Goddess looks kindly upon those who take action.”
Man: “Was that…an angel!? Oh! I understand! I will do exactly as you say!”
The best part is that the man gives the nun a love letter, but it's vague "you stole something from me..." "one day I'll take you away from this place..." so the nun thinks that she stole something from the man, and he wants to kidnap her now! xD
King Trode is also another very unique character, he can be a little annoying at times, but for the most part, he's alright. ^_^
Now, you won't see her human form until later in the game (that's seriously not a spoiler, you know you'll see the real her sometime....), but when you do, you'll realize that there IS a Mary Sue in this game... And her name is.... Princess Medea, the BEAUTIFUL, PERFECT, CARING, HUMBLE PRINCESS WHO HAS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL, PERFECT VOICE, AND IS DESIREABLE EVEN IN HER HORSE FORM! LAWL, LIEK SHE IZ SO KEWL! AND SHE LUVS THE HERO!
Medea: Hero, I'm worried you see, about Prince Charmles...
Hero: ....
Medea: I know, I know, I could be quite selfish too when I was a child, but....
xD You can so tell what she sees in him, he's such a GREAT listener. >_<
Medea: ~blabs away~
Hero: ....
Medea: I knew you'd undestand. <3
The music in this game is great too! Really enjoyable! The battles are hard, but make you think. And the storyline is really interesting. I definitely recommend this game, as you can see how I've ranted on.
And lastly, BUMPAGA!
EDIT: Oh, and trust me, there are PLENTY of plot twists! :D

Wow. I'm certainly looking forward to playing it more now. I'm used to silent heroes, thanks to Suikoden, so I don't think he'll be getting on m'nerves anytime soon. Is there voice acting in this game? And if so, what do you think of it?

YEZ, ACTUAL QUOTE. ~lubs the characters withsuchforce~
Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention that; voice acting! There's voice acting in this game, and in my opinion, it's really well done, except for sometimes they do talk too slowly, and I skip listening to them 'cause I already read their response. xD There are a TON of accents, in the first half of the game you'll be accustomed to hearing mostly British accents though. For some reason I thought the British voice acting was gonna bother me at first, but it's actually really good! :D
Real_Emotion - January 6, 2006 11:12 PM (GMT)
ZOMG!! O___o;;; I finally see what you meant by the plot twists, Rikku. I actually feel a little sad for Dhoulmagus now... ;_; I suspect there are a lot more plot twists on the way, right? I already suspect something that has to do with the Hero's bloodline and origin. *cough*
:lmao: You decribed the Hero and Medea perfectly, Rikku:lol: The silent hero and Princess Mary-Sue. lol But, I must admit... the interaction between the two in the Hero's dreams is a little cute... very sappy, but cute. I'm such a sap. :D I was a little put off from the complete and utter silence from the Hero. Couldn't he atleast have battle cries or even groans when he pushes some kind of large object. But, I did get used to it, being that I'm a little used to silent heros(thank you, Kotor II <3).

I'm sowwie, Rikku-chan... *gives Angelo plushie* Normally, I like the 'charming' and flirty types, but... I dunno... Angelo just seems to work my nerves so easly. I like him battle-wise, though. He is teh smex with a bow or sword. I did warm up to him a tiny-insie-winsie bit from the time I last posted... tiny...
I really enjoy the voice acting and the accents are very well done. Jessica's accent and voice is the best! Whoever her voice actress is... kudos to her. And I agree, they talk so slowly. By the time they finish talking, I would have already read through the subtitles a while ago. *shrugs*
I probably sound silly, but... I LOVE PLAYING AS MUCHIE! The little critter is just so darn adorable. He rolls!!! Squeee... so adorable! :3
Rikkulicious - January 7, 2006 04:25 AM (GMT)
Trust me, R_E, there are a few more suprising plot twists coming your way! :D I'm almost about to beat the game! I'm taking a good trip around dah world first and training, and then I'll be going to the FINAL DUNGEON, HO NOEZ. ;_; I'm level 36 right now...
Feh, I'm a sap too, I found it cute. But at the same time part of me wants to kill off Medea and Hero, and then just leave Angelo, Jessica, and Yangus, BEST PARTAY EVAH! xD Gawds, but I phail, I can never hate a character, no matter how annoying they are! >_<
About Angelo, in the beginning he did sort of get on my nerves, but that was just 'cause there had to be a giant red sign hovering over him that said 'IF YOU CAN'T GUESS YET HE'S THE SECKSY BISHIE WHO FLIRTS LOTS, LAWLAWLAWL.' But now I wubs him to death! Plus, he's SO quotable! xD
Yeah, sometimes I skip over the voice acting 'cause I've already read the subtitles, and I don't wanna hear the person take FOREVER to get where I'm to, 'cause I already know what they're gonna say.
Hmm...so you're to the part with the Dhoulmagus twists, right? You should be using Munchie only one more time in the game. ;_; I love Munchie too, though! HE'S SO CUTE. ~pinches his cheeks~

More?! 0___o;; I'm still floored by the last plot twist.
In the game, and at level 31 and I've just past through the whole 'Marta' thing. It was so sad... I hate that evil boss guy-thingie!!(avoiding spoilers ho, ho, ho... XP) I can't wait to kick his ass in the final battle. :battlecry:

One one more time. But... b-but... that's no fun. :pout: I think I already past that part. In the ice cave, right? I was having fun playing as Munchie there. My brother saw me playing as Munchie and then he left the room. 45 minutes later, he came back and I was still playing as Munchie.
bro:WTH? You're still in that part? Is it that hard?
me: No.
bro: Then why are you still playing as that mouse-thing??
me: Because...
bro: Because why?
me: 'Cause it's Munchie...
bro: .... so?
me: Because it's Munchie and MUNCHIE IS LOVE!!!
bro: ... you're stupid...
me: Don't be hatin' on my Munchie...
If I could find some high-res pictures of Munchie, I would so making it into a sig.
Anyways... yeah... DQVIII rocks... oh, and I bought the strategy guide a few weeks ago. Feh... most of the info in there I could've easily found in the internet for free. There isn't even a walkthrough in there which kinda dissappointed me. I only use the guide to help me locate the treasure chests and the 'infamous' monsters. At least the detailed maps are helpful.

...
I wouldn't be suprised.
Oh, yeah, also Jessica's comment after that scene, she says something about Angelo being a templar, and how impersonating the goddess is against the rules, and he's all 'the goddess I believe in doesn't care about those rules! :D' Jessica responds with, "Fine, but if you get a mountain thrown on top of you, don't come crawling back to me!"

You're at the Marta part, right? Well there aren't TOO many more plot twists, but there is one interesting one involving Marcello, which you'll come across soon enough! Let's just say Marcello is both annoying and badass at the same time...
Seriously, and that Marta part almost made me cry! :cray: I just finished the game yesterday, now I'm playing the post-game to get the second ending!

Yep, no more Munchie for you. BUT there is an interesting part concerning Munchie, you have to pass this hard boss battle (harder than the big boss himself) and then you'll see for yourself! ;) BUT passing this boss battle is what gives you the second ending, meaning you have to beat the game regularly first!

Lynn - January 13, 2006 09:01 PM (GMT)
Okay, so I was rendered keyboard-less for several days, and... I started DQ8.
OMG. OLD-SCHOOL GALORE. SWORDS and KINGS and KINGDOMS!!!   How I've missed thee!
I'm honestly not sure where to start-- I'm just loving the whole game so far! :hyper: I haven't seemed to reach any real plot twists yet (I was able to guess the whole "seven sages' heirs" thingie right after the bard at Farebury spilled the beans, but the Evil Jessica bit was a bit of a surprise) but reading your posts, I'm getting all antsy to continue and see what's gonna happen!
Okay, first things first-- A WORLD MAP. I never thought I'd ever see one again on the PS2. :cray: It is for this reason that no matter how many times Jessica calls Marcello a jerk, and how many times he proves her right, I will forever be in love with the guy. I'm fantastically directionally-challenged, so I must stop to check the World Map nearly every ten minutes! Thank you, Marcello (who disturbingly reminds me of Bezita)! You could eat babies later, for all I care.
I must say, the voice acting has me pretty floored for the most part. I think Trode has to be my favourite voice actor there-- he does the high-maintenance-but-with-a-kind-heart kingly voice so well! AND he's adorable. I hope he never changes back into his human form. :P There are parts where I thought the voice acting suffered a little, but overall, it's just awesome...
And the battle was already half-won when I heard the British accents, anyway.
Rikku, I finally get what you mean by Princess Mary-Sue. I mean, HOW many times do we need to be told that she's beautiful?? Okay, she's elegant and beautiful and pure and beautiful and her singing makes the nightingales weep tears of joy and did I forget to mention that she's BEAUTIFUL?!!
Oh em gee, I didn't hear you again. Did you say she's the epitome of perfection?!
I could handle the NPC comments, but when The Seer kept going on and on... It's enough to get any fanfic author's ass flamed to crispy critters.
But I can't hate her much, either. It's pretty much a mistake of the plot's-- turning her into a horse was an interesting twist, but it rendered her character absolutely flat beyond all imagination. And between the horse-princess-who-doesn't-speak and the silent-hero, I'm not anticipating a romance on the Suteki Da Ne scale here. :P
Oh, yeah, I named the hero Goku. *cough* And the name only ingrains itself further into his character whenever he turns Super Saiyan reaches 100 tension.
...My will was too weak to resist the temptation.
As for the rest of the cast-- love, love, LOVE them. I was a little prepared for Angelo after reading your comments, so maybe that's why he didn't irritate me that much. I absolutely adore all his dialogue bits, though. My favourite so far has to be when he joked about abandoning the Princess at Pickham. :giggle:
I also like the comments Trode makes whenever you go to check your Battle Stats. I can't count the number of times he's scolded me for wandering around so much xD And he scolded me for leaving the console on and doing something else too (which is super eerie because I do that ALL THE TIME).
Dialogue in this game is a winner, hands down.
For the record, I'm 70+ hours into the game. Goku is Level 36. I'm just heading to Alexandria Tower to collect those jewels for Dominico.
...Yeah, Trode scolded me for overlevelling, too.
But I love wandering around the world map SO MUCH!! :cray:

:lmao: Goku?! That's so cute! I was going to name the Hero, Gohan, but I changed my mind last minute. I had to slap my brother and cousin before they could even say the phrase, "OMG! Look they're turning Super Saiyan." whenever the Hero reached 100 tension.

Ah! I almost forgot those. Trode's little 'Battle Stats' quotes are golden! I remember he kept scolding me that my Hero dies too much and to put Yangus in charge. Then he said something about going on a shopping spree, Jessica dieing too much(not my fault), and now he comments about how benevolent I am that I don't kill all the monsters I face. Which, I presume, means that I flee from battle often. In my defence... I'm far to lazy to battle every godforsaken monster that seems to want to battle my party. Dangit... how many times can you kill a 'slime' and it still be entertaining? I've killed over 100 slimes already?! I'm surprised they're not extinct in my game yet?
Glad you love the game, Lynn! Now you can join in with Rikku and I in our DQVIII mosh pit of love in a hearty squee of DQVIII lovin'. :plot:
Lastly... FLYING IS SOOO COOOL!!! Lynn, if you like wandering around by foot, wait til' you wonder around by air! WHEEEEEE!!!! :fly:

Lynn! So glad to see you got the game!

THANK YOU.
SHE'S BEAUTUFIL AND HAS A WONDERFUL SINGING VOICE, AND IS BEAUTIFUL!11 Gawds, Medea, no matter how cool I think your name is, I think you should STAY as a horse...

I also like the comments Trode makes whenever you go to check your Battle Stats. I can't count the number of times he's scolded me for wandering around so much xD And he scolded me for leaving the console on and doing something else too (which is super eerie because I do that ALL THE TIME).
|
Trode always bugged me about Jessica dying (which isn't MY fault, either!!), and me taking too long to do things. Wandering world map=Love, that and running away from battle so much.
Me: ~lazy~ ~chooses escape for rest of dungeon~ STFU, MONSTERS.

Oh!! Lynn, I think you may just have missed a memorable quote from Angelo saying how he thought Jessica's life-affirming jumblehs were water balloons when they first met, and 'feared for the dryness of his uniform'. :lmao:
Hey, R_E, where are you in dah game right now? I'm still being a lazy ass and haven't gotten any further since last time, and just to warn you, since you now have the ability to fly, BEFORE you go to Tryan Gully or follow Leopold, go to His Holiness' place and there's a scene with Marcello, I thinks, which I missed. ;_;

I'm not doing much. After I learned how to fly, I was just wondering around looking for more infamous monters to add to my team. Then I played in the monster arena for a while. Now, I'm currently leveling up like crazy in that place infested with metal slimes... leveled up five times in less then an hour!
Do you mean that little scene between Marcello and your party when you encounter him in the elevator? Yes, I did that before I went to that island where Empyrea lives. ^_^ Does that scene effect something in the future of the game? I already know what happens in the near future of the game, BTW, after watching my brother play. But, he didn't know about the scene with Marcello until I mentioned it to him.
On another DQ8 note... I feel sad for Angelo. He looks like he needs a giant huggle after what Marcello does to him... :huggle: then in the future he still helps him?! Angelo earns luv and respect points from me.

No, not by the elevator! You can land on the little floating island itself where His Holiness is! THEN that'll trigger ANOTHER scene with Marcello. I don't think that scene affects the future, but it's still a good scene to see.
Angelo needs a giant huggle! HE DOES! D:< ~gives him thousands of huggles~ After the scene in Neos with Marcello, you never see Marcello again... ;_;
Real_Emotion - January 16, 2006 07:02 AM (GMT)
Oh, that scene?! Yeah, I saw it already. ^_^ It doesn't effect anything in the future scenes, but it was interesting.
My brother just finished the game today, so I saw the ending. :giggle: King Trode looks funny. When they revealed what he looked like my brother, his girlfriend, her sister, and I laughed so hard! :lmao: For some reason, I prefer the way he looked when he was cursed than his appearence at the end of the game. And I laughed at Charles. No princess booty for youuuu-ooooo. :lmao:

King Trode DEFINITELY looks hilarious, I think a lot of people preferred him in his cursed form, because we're so used to it. ...And King Trode's hair is GREASY, I have to give him some shampoo or something...
Charmles was a little ~bleeps self out~ in the ending, I'm glad he got what he deserved...
Oh, yeah, and in a part of the ending where Angelo's walking around with his two hookers, I couldn't help shouting, "ANGELO'S A PIMP!!! PIIIIIIIMMMMMPPPPP!!!!!!!!"

:lmao: Holy, you mean 70+ hours at the Tower is still okay?! Awesome. And my brother was complaining that I was taking too long with this game! (which, compared to other games, is true... I think we finished FFX in half the time...)
| QUOTE |
| Ah! I almost forgot those. Trode's little 'Battle Stats' quotes are golden! |
Yep yep, I love reading them! I keep revisiting Trode every few hours, just hoping he'll say something new! So far I've been scolded for wandering too much, for stinging on my Seeds (he even threatened to eat all my hard-saved Seeds! xO) and that one time, for everyone but Jessica dying in a normal battle. xD
My nature absolutely refuses to let me skip on any battle, though, so I my battle count is nearing the 2000s. So yes, I manually backtrack through the dungeons instead of Evac-ing outta them. And yes, I bully the slimes. It's fun to do 100+ damage in one hit.
At first Kalderasha did, but now Morrie reminds me of Mr. Satan. *can't stop drawing DB connections*

Amen, sistah!
...Well, okay, Medea sorta got a giggle outta me when she commented about eating grass instead of cake for her recent eighteenth birthday... but still... she and Trode are just more amusing in their current forms. xD
I also think I've finished all the optional conversation scenes with her at the Mystical Spring! Now all I get is a window saying Goku and Medea enjoy a "stolen moment" together. T_T Which makes me feel that these two have always been a couple, which feels less annoying than the usual "princess falls in love with hero throughout game" plot.

GASP! Nooo, I did miss that! Damn! When did he say that?! *beats on Angelo*
Mayhaps this be a sign for a second playthrough...?
Ooh, thanks for the heads up about the second Marcello scene! I've just reached Empychuu (or however you spell that) and I'm definitely returning to His Holiness' place for that scene! *wants more Marcello* I'm holding out on visiting Neos now, since you say that's the last we'll see of him. T__T
*wants more Marcello!* If he doesn't reappear again, there goes my hunch that the sceptre will possess him and give a new face to the brotherly rivalry between him and Angelo.
Speaking of that, huggles for Angelo! I loved his reaction after we meet Marcello at the elevator, and then later when he comments on Cash and Carrie's relationship in the Dragon Graveyard. Especially the part where he says it's better that Cash acknolwedges his sister, at least, even when they're fighting. :cray:
And what's this I hear about second endings and playthroughs and wha?! :o
Rikkulicious - January 17, 2006 11:17 PM (GMT)
Ahh, no, Lynn, you'll see more of Marcello, the last time you see Marcello is in Neos LATER in the game... ;)
Also, after you beat the game you can save your game right before you beat dah final boss, then you can go to the Dragovian Sanctuary, do a side-quest and then defeat the game normally to get a second ending.

i want this game, i want to play this game, i want to borrow this game from anyone, i need dragon quest....DRAGON QUEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Real_Emotion - January 27, 2006 03:46 AM (GMT)
Lynn, Rikku... out of pure curiousity...
What skills did you have your characters focus on?
For the Hero, I mainly focused on his sword or boomerang skills. I did pay some attention to his spear and courage skills too, but not as much as I focused on his sword and boomerang skills.
For Yangus, I paid more attention to his mallet and axe skills. I wished I paid more attention to maintaining his scythe skills. -_- There was a scythe attack called 'Big Banga' that I really wanted to learn. I witnessed the attack several times, but didn't get a chance to get it for Yangus.
For Jessica, I only focused on her whip and sex appeal skills. I loved the whip since it's able to hit more than one enemy at a time, which is the same reason why I loved the boomerang. And of course, her sex appeal skills came in handy since they could destract an enemy or two. I didn't care much for her other skills, the dagger and staff. xP
For Angelo, I focused on his sword, bow, and charisma skills. More so on his bow skills than anything else.
I never paid any attention on the fisticuffs skills. :dunno: Feh, I had more confidence on my characters, knowing there was a weapon on their hands. Bare knuckles brawling just doesn't appeal to me.
Lynn - January 27, 2006 10:02 AM (GMT)
Ah, skills. You will be amazed by all the fretting I do everytime I have to add those damn skill points. >_<
Goku - Swords, Boomerangs and Courage. I've been focusing mostly on Sword (got Miracle Slash, which was my main objective after reading about it in a FAQ) and will now most likely focus on Courage. LOVE the Boomerangs, too. I swear, it was my main weapon against normal enemies most of the time I was around Argonia. :fangirl:
Yangus - Focus is on Clubs. I'm also beginning to regret this too, as I really wanted to use Big Banga. But oh well, I suppose Clubs will have some uber awesome attack to itself too (it'd better xO). Also added some to Scythe and Humanity (it kinda helped when I needed Yangus to heal early in the game).
Jessica - Main focus is on Wands, since I want to get as many spells as possible. Her MP regen at every turn helps a lot in keeping her MP up during the longer boss battles as well. After that, it's a tie between Sex Appeal and Whips.
Angelo - Oh... poor Angelo. I really messed up his skill points. >_< Getting average levels in Swords, Wands, Bows AND Charisma. He's really a mixed, messed-up jack-of-all-trades. But it still turned out okay, as I got the important healing spells. I'm focusing on Wands now because I've realised that I never use Angelo to attack the major bosses. There's always someone who needs healing.
Haha, I never looked twice at Fisticuffs! I don't like the idea of my characters going around weapon-less either. Although I suppose making Goku use Fisticuffs would've just added more to his Dragonball-ness...
Rikkulicious - January 29, 2006 11:04 PM (GMT)
When I first started off, I kept everyone at an even amount of points for each skill, then later around 1/4 into the game I focused on Boomerang and Sword for Hero, Sword for Angelo, Staves for Jess, and Humanity for Yangus...

No, it's just that Rikkulicious, RE and I have a stake in this game and we're trying all we can to promote it, get more people to buy and earn ourselves some killer commissions so that we'll not have to work for the rest of our lives.
Of course! I didn't even spend 60 hours on FFX, yet I've breached 100 hours on DQVIII. It's horribly addictive, I assure you.
And then there are people who got bored of the game 30 minutes in.
So my guess is, if you're meant to enjoy it, you will. :D
Fenrir_in_Flowers - February 6, 2006 08:23 PM (GMT)
I am soooooo glad that I'm not the only person addicted to this game at the moment! I'm just up to going into the Dark Ruins, and my Hero is like level 32 with nearly 50 hours of gameplay. I just can't help wanting to run around everywhere and explore the whole world map, etc. (I also spent an indecent amount of time in Pickham Casino so that I've bought everything I can there and still have tens of thousands of tokens for once I get Baccarat opened.)
Princess Medea is rather MarySue, though I wouldn't wish the prospect of Charmless on anyone. I'm able to just grin while going through all her scenes. Silent heros are pretty common for me in games, so no worries there. It's the rest of the cast that really makes this game so awesome. Yangus and Trode both are quite funny, and I love the reaction Yangus has every time Trode suddenly appears. Its' stupid, but I laugh everytime. Jessica is a strong female character, despite the option of dressing her in bunny suits and other revealing garb. Never had a problem with Angelo and knew I adored him by the time of his story about his arrival at the abbey. (Plus, I loved Marcello's reaction upon hearing his name for the first time!) He's really got some of the wittiest dialogue in the game. *huggles Angelo*
All the stuff your characters say, especially some of the conversations you have after hitting the start button, is freakin' hilarious. I think one of the reasons FFVII has always been so dear to me was the humor, which I kinda find lacking in the newer FF games. That's why all the humor in DQ8 has made it a favorite of mine already. I seem to remember some funny stuff in Dragon Warrior 7 too, but I'd have to replay it to refresh my memory on that one.
Anyhow, on this run I've been specializing my hero (Mr. Wiggly) on boomerang, courage, and sword.
Jessica is whips and daggers/swords.
Angelo is bows and swords.
And Yangus is scythes and humanity. I'm three skill points away from learning Grimmer Reaper and something like 6 from learning the Underpants Dance. I want both Big Banga and Golden Oldies!
The guidebook only seems only handy for the compendiums, maps, and info on skills. Two of the pages in my skill points section are actually falling out on me already, which hasn't happed to one of my guidebooks since Breath of Fire 3. LOL
The character designs are insanely DBZ. (Yeah, I'm addicted to DBZ fanfic; especially Briefs family fics with comedy.) Even my mother will look at the screen and shout out, "Look it's Mr. Satan!" or "Go Trunks!" if she stops in while I'm playing. I keep trying to introduce her to the glory of RPG games, but she's still a crazy platform fan. Poor thing!
Is anyone else here having massive fun with the alchemy pot and trying to find sneaky ways of getting characters their best possible weapons using it?
-Testament- - February 8, 2006 08:40 AM (GMT)
Is this game any good, I've never tried a DQ before.
Angelo is my fav character since he looks so much like Trunks(future)=GREATEST DBZ CHARACTER EVER :woot:

Actually, I was playing Tales of Legendia. Got pissed off by Shirley and Senel (Why don't you two just GO permanently?), and ended up playing Dragon Quest VIII because I'm having RPG withdrawals.
I love it. Darn, I can't believe I allowed this game to gather dust *kicks self*.
I love all the characters, though I find the battle aspects too... darn... dragging. Hero gets to walk around so much from point A to B, which are very very far away I may add, I'm praying for an airship. ^^;
Anywhos recently got Angelo, but not before getting lost trying to find that God forsaken cave that will take me to the abbot. I thought I'm supposed to turn left at Simpleton and follow the river. I ended up in two different towns four hours later completely lost fighting tough monsters before brother helped out (played before me, got tired and didn't want to finish it) and that said cave can be found RIGHT.NEXT.THAT.DAMN.ABBEY.
AAAAAAHHHH!!!!
Fortunately Marcello gave a world map. Thank God.
And am becoming a Angelo x Jessica shipper. ^^

Actually, I didn't know DBZ much... but that character designer did Chrono Trigger, an awesome RPG in its time. ^^, so whenever I see Jessica, Marle comes to mind...
And people complain Tetsuya Nomura has same character designs...

:lmao: On the bright side, I'm guessing you sped right through the cave? But yeah, the world map is HUGE. Or maybe I'm just not used to world maps anymore. Before Marcello gave the map, I kept getting disoriented from all the hills and plains and spent loads of time just lost in the forests.

Well, I'd like to say DQVIII didn't get #4 in Famitsu's Top 100 games for nothing.
But I don't think you're actually forced to level up... The world map is so huge, just running from place to place should be enough to scrape fairly well by. Plus the trek through a dungeon will always grant you a few extra levels as well. What I usually do is trek through the dungeon and collect all treasures on my first run, teleport outta there, save and make a very quick second run to actually fight the boss.
What can I say? FF and KH spoiled me by having a save point right next to a big boss.
