Title: Final Fantasy Vii Ultimania Omega
Description: Translations have begun!
FF_Goddess - November 7, 2005 02:39 AM (GMT)
Wilhelm was kind enough to start translating the FFVII: Ultimania Omega for us! The first bit has been translated. It is the pre-game timeline:
Pre-game Timeline:
This timeline covers the important events before the start of the game. Together with the individual character analyses and the Truth of Final Fantasy VII section, hopefully it will help you understand and appreciate the story.
Approx. 30 years ago: Gast, head of the Shin-ra science department, discovers the mummified Jenova in the Northern Crater. Mistaking it for an Ancient, he begins his research.
25~30 years ago: Start of the Jenova Project. Birth of Sephiroth. Gast leaves the Shin-ra company and disappears, Hojo takes over his research
Approx. 23 years ago: Disappearance of Lucrecia. Hojo performs live experiments on Vincent.
22 years ago: At the Icicle Inn, Aerith is born to Gast and Ifalna. Hojo orders his subordinates to kill Gast. Aerith and Ifalna are confined in the Shin-ra Building as test subjects
15 years ago: Ifalna and Aerith escape from the Shin-ra Building. Ifalna dies. Aerith, 7 years old, is taken in by Elmyra.
6-7 years ago: Cloud calls Tifa out to the village water tower, and declares that he is going to join SOLDIER. The following morning, he leaves Nibelheim and heads for Midgar. Zacks sends a letter to his parent's home in Gongaga, proclaiming he has "got a girlfriend". End of the war. Terrorist acts by the anti-Shin-ra group AVALANCHE intensify.
5 years ago: Sephiroth, Zacks, and Cloud are dispatched to the Nibel Mako reactor. Sephiroth comes in contact with Jenova and awakens. He burns down Nibelheim and obtains the head of Jenova, but Cloud's counterattack causes him to fall into the Lifestream. Hojo conducts Sephiroth Clone experiments on the survivors of Nibelheim, including Cloud and Zacks.
4 years ago: Immediately after the completion of the Corel Mako reactor Corel village is burned down by Shin-ra, and the Gold Saucer is built over the site. Barret, a miner in Corel, loses his wife Myna and one of his arms, and swears revenge on Shin-ra.
Directly prior to the game: Zacks and Cloud escape from the Shin-ra mansion. Zacks is caught and killed by Shin-ra troops. Only Cloud manages to make it to Midgar. Cloud meets Tifa again in the Sector 7 Slum train station
:hyper: Thank you, Wilhelm!!! :huggle: :gift:

Mmm... Non-LT storyline goodness... CG craves more, she does.
Clorith - November 7, 2005 03:27 AM (GMT)
Oh!! Thanks, wilhelm!!
wilhelm, what's going on from page 518-529? Are they talking about the initial plot? Sephiroth was supposed to be Aerith's brother etc? And what's going on in the interviews at the back? I see Aerith's name mentioned on 567. :D Something about her meeting Cloud in the Church.
yin-chan - November 7, 2005 03:40 AM (GMT)
OOoooohhh yummylicious translations!!! :D Thank you so much Wilhelm!! :huggle:
Lynn - November 8, 2005 10:26 AM (GMT)
Gah, how could I have missed this thread!
Thank you so much, Wilhelm! :huggle: Ah, Ultimania goodness... Although it cheeses me off that SE refuses to give Sephiroth's exact age. Of all the things they want to leave "open to interpretation", don't leave this!
I know it's not that important, but I wanna know. :P
Thank you very, very, very much, Wilhelm! Keep up the good work (and translate moooooore~)!
[EDIT] Oh, and this has been bugging me since seeing it being mentioned on a LJ-- is there any mention at all of Gast's surname anywhere? I heard it was "Faresis" or something like that?
Lynn - November 12, 2005 10:59 AM (GMT)
I'm so sorry for the double post... but new information from the Ultimania has been translated by Vilaeth! *hopes that gets her off the hook :hide:*
So far it's the early character profiles for Cloud and Tifa (I'm guessing they're the early drafts of the ones that appear in the game booklet), as well as a list of FFVII cameos in other games. I've copied them here for the interested:
| QUOTE (Early Materials FILE - Characters) |
Cloud Job: Mystic Knight Age: 21 Weapon: Sword, katana Protagonist. Ex-SOLDIER. Now a wandering mercenary*. Employed by rebel group AVALANCHE. The large sword held on his back by magnets is his symbol.
* [The English game was rather inconsistent with how it translated 'nandemo-ya'. When Zacks mentions it, on the way to Midgar it's 'mercenary', when Cloud mentions it again in the church after he fell through the roof it ends up 'I do a bit of everything'. When Aerith repeats it, it ends up 'jack-of-all-trades'. They're all the same thing, it's another part of Cloud assimilating Zacks' memories, attitudes, and so on. ]
Tifa Job: Shooter (martial artist) Age: 20 Weapon: Bare fist An ordinary woman. Cheerful personality. Martial artist. Born in Nivelheim*. The comrades who gather in her bar formed AVALANCHE. Tifa is also a member of AVALANCHE herself, but isn't taking part in the current missions. To say which, she's the type to cheer everyone up and support from the sidelines. An old acquaintance of Cloud's, it seems she likes him but she won't show it. On her back is a large scar she got from Cloud. Due to the shock of recieving that injury she lost her memories from around that time.
* * [note: not a typo on my part, either it's a typo in the book or they were going to have a 'v' in the original. Although strictly speaking, it could be translated as "Nivelheim" in the final version as well.] |
| QUOTE (Other Minor Appearances) |
Final Fantasy V (PSX version) On the menu at the start of the game, characters from FFV cross the screen. But there is a small possibility that a sprite of Cloud will walk by. Apart from this, Cloud does not appear in the main game.
Final Fantasy X-2 In the Gullwings, the group the main character Yuna is a member of, there is a young boy called Shinra. His name suggests a connection with the Shinra Company, and he's researching a method to use the "life force that flows through our planet" as energy. The results of this can't be seen in FFX-2, but maybe someday his descendents will form a "company that supplies energy from the planet"?
This scene with Shinra can be seen in the end part of the game. There's something similar to the Lifestream in this world as well. Final Fantasy XI: Rise of Zilart If you defeat the dark Avatar Fenrir, you can choose the reward you want out of several choices. One of these is an "Ancient's Key" item. On its own the item serves no purpose, but if you defeat the other Avatars and collect other items of the same kind, you can trade those in for the Summoner's strongest armor.
As well as the Ancient's Key, you can collect other items named after key items from the FF series.
[note: I've never played FFXI, so if I've messed up the names of things, any corrections would be much obliged.]
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles In a town called Marr's Pass, as the story progresses the couple who run the inn will have some children. They will have a total of 3 children, named Clou-Mid, Squal-Mid and Zida-Mid... in other words, parodies of the names of the heroes from FFVII, FFVIII and FFIX (Cloud, Squall and Zidane, respectively).
[note: I've also not played this one, so I don't know if there is an official spelling for these.]
Parasite Eve On the screen where you choose the area you want to search, in the entrance of the subway, there's a billboard with an image of Cloud and Aerith sitting. Parasite Eve 2 Written on the white board in the research facility are the names of a vaccine program, the "Cloud Anti-virus", and a computer magazine called "Aeris September issue".
In the September issue of Aeris magazine, there's a hint for the password. Hanjuku Heroes vs 3D Features generals named Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, Yuffie and Sephiroth. However, the only similarities they have to the FFVII characters are the names and gender.
The one in the middle of the screen riding the black horse is General Aerith. Incidentally, one of her hobbies is gardening. |
I love that last one. General Aerith gets to ride The Black Horse! Everyone else, WALK! :aeris:
*is totally worshipping Vilaeth right now*

Yeah! Subliminal message, much?
I've never heard of Hanjuku Heroes vs. 3D, but the screenshot of it looked so cute! Since it's for the PS2, maybe there's still a chance to get it... :shifty:
Clorith - November 12, 2005 12:59 PM (GMT)
Oh, let me just past my scan here, then. Since vilaeth translated this page. ^_^

Go General Aerith!! :fangirl: :aeris:

Yes thankies Villy :)
And thank you Clorith
And FF_G for making the threadth :huggle:
So ... Cloud was originally meant to wound Tifa?
Instead of Sephiroth ... Cloud was to do it o_o

I took that more as a mistake in typing rather than a plot change.

Question for Wilhelm:
I saw a definition for Supermensch on your site awhile ago, but I don't see it there now. At any rate, was Cloud considered a Supermensch, too?
*realizes that no one else prolly has a clue what she's talking about* :lmao:
Lynn - January 17, 2006 05:08 PM (GMT)
I was on the verge of giving up on this book... but Vilaeth comes through once again! :yahoo:
This is a translation of Tifa's diary, which was originally supposed to be in the game and accessible during the Kalm flashback. I wonder why it was removed... Please don't say it was to make way for that orthopedic underwear.
We also finally have names for Tifa's male admirers. I presume they are but a few out of many, though. :giggle:
Many thanks to Vilaeth of ACF for the translation! :huggle:
| QUOTE |
Kalm Flashback [ Tifa's Diary ] Last night I read a book by a man called Mon Mos. It said that Mako energy was like the blood of the planet, and if we keep using it like we are now it'll shorten the life of the planet.
-----
I wonder if Wel, Dan, Meiday, and the other boys who left the village are doing alright? All the boys left for the city. They all called me out to the water tower. They all said the same things. Ah, except for Cloud. He said something about joining SOLDIER? I wonder how long he's been thinking about that. He was always pretty distant from everyone else, but still worried about what everyone thought. Honestly, he was kind of a strange kid. Always getting into fights. It wasn't like he was fighting because he was angry, more like he was testing something. What was he trying to test? His own strength?
-----
I thought about Cloud today. When did he change? I'm sure the boys started to hate Cloud when he was 8. He'd get into fights with anybody. When Cloud was 8... I was 7. The year mom died. I don't remember much about that year. It's kind of a strange feeling, like being myself but at the same time not. But even since then, it's felt like I've been obssessed with Mt. Nibel.
*Originally there was a diary in Tifa's room, and you were able find out what she thought about Cloud. Still, it shows an impressive display of Tifa's popularity, being called out to the water tower by everyone. |
FF_Goddess - January 17, 2006 05:11 PM (GMT)
Well, there goes the CloTi theory that Cloud calling Tifa out to the water tower was "romantic"! Looks like all the other boys did the same thing!
Lynn - January 17, 2006 05:19 PM (GMT)
I'm just amazed at Tifa's popularity. I mean, we all knew she was the darling of the town, but seeing it confirmed is still pretty awesome. It makes me wonder if she ever had any girlfriends, what with her taking up martial arts at the same time. I imagine some of them might've been quite... jealous.
And yeah, the water tower thing. xD *pokes Cloud* Be a bit more original, will you?!
I like the way Tifa sounds in her diary, though. I guess she might've been around her early teens when she wrote those entries, yet she still sounds quite mature-- almost too mature for her age. :(

...Umm. Wow, Tifa... Cold much? Did she not listen to him at all? She just heard the word SOLDIER and instantly she makes him promise to save her one day? Cloud pours his heart out about wanting to be someone and all she says is "he said something about joining Soldier?" This is getting worse the more I hear about this. <_<

Oh, thank goodness. I thought I was the only one raising an eyebrow at that particular line. >_< Smooth, Tifa, real smooth.

Agreed. <_< I always said I felt as if she was only interested in Cloud because she wanted to be rescued by a famous SOLDIER one day. It's nice to see this finally confirmed. Tifa was never interested in Cloud. He was just another boy in town.

Lynn - January 18, 2006 09:08 AM (GMT)
Although her response to Cloud is a little disappointing, considering her age and position in Nibelheim, I find her response no surprise for a young, pretty, super-popular teenager.
| QUOTE (FF_Goddess) |
| It's nice to see this finally confirmed. Tifa was never interested in Cloud. He was just another boy in town. |
Well, let's remember that this was one of the earlier ideas and that it never reached the final product anyway, so it's possible the writers thought twice about including it because of the image such a line would give.
Schala - January 18, 2006 08:16 PM (GMT)
I didn't realize that Tifa was so popular with the boys in Nibelheim. :ermm: And all of them asked her out to the well before leaving! Then I wonder what made her think of Cloud and not all the others who left?
Lynn - January 18, 2006 08:21 PM (GMT)
I'm guessing it's the mention of SOLDIER and Sephiroth. It's like how everyone here wants to grow up to be a lawyer, doctor, engineer, accountant... and out pops this blond little pipsqueak claiming he'll be the next Darth Vader.
Or something like that. *needs to work on her examples*
[EDIT] Whoo, Vilaeth's on a roll! :yahoo: Record of Cloud Strife has been updated, although it looks incomplete as of yet. Let's hope for more to come! *does a fan dance for Villy*
| QUOTE (Record of Cloud Strife) |
[ 21 years ago ] Born in Nibelheim (*1) [ 12 years ago ] In an attempt to cheer up Tifa, who was greiving the death of her mother, he follows her as she climbs Mt. Nibel, and they fall from a mountain path. Miraculously, he escapes with minor injuries (*2) [ 7 years ago ] On the town's water tower, declares to Tifa that he is joining SOLDIER. Promising to save her if she's in trouble, he leaves the village "But I'm different from them. I'm not just going to find a job. I want to join SOLDIER. I'm going to be the best there is, just like Sephiroth." Flashback scene: to Tifa on the water tower.
Commentary: Before leaving the village, Cloud works up the courage to call Tifa, the girl he likes, and declares that he was going to join SOLDIER. From the line "I'm different from all of them", by telling her that "I'm special", you can see him protecting himself from the lonliness he counldn't be honest with himself about. Notes *1: Cloud's father died when he was very young. Cloud lived with his mother. |
Amathala - January 19, 2006 12:59 PM (GMT)
Wonderful translations! I'm looking forward to more. How are the CloTi's going to back themselves up now? And I also didnt know about the subway picture. Now I have an excuse to start over and play PE once again.
Lynn - January 19, 2006 03:53 PM (GMT)
I don't see what the Clotis can use to back themselves up, except that Cloud liked Tifa as a child and everyone already knows that, but I'm not sure how that becomes an advantage for Cleris either.
I like that they kept Cloud's father simple, though. The idea that Cloud came from a normal, unremarkable family appeals to me more than the fanboyish ideas of his father being some famous ex-SOLDIER who died a mysterious death. :P
BusterBlader - January 19, 2006 04:48 PM (GMT)
Your saying that Cloud and Zack were injected with cells from Jenova's body after Sephiroth took the head of his "mother?" Did the SOLDIER class begin using Jenova cells four years before the FF7 story took place? I read the game script and found nothing about Cloud and Zack being injected with Jenova's cells.
Lynn - January 19, 2006 04:59 PM (GMT)
| QUOTE (Cloud) |
| I'm physically built like someone on SOLDIER. Hojo's plan to clone Sephiroth wasn't that difficult. It was just the same procedure they use when creating members of SOLDIER. You see, someone in SOLDIER isn't simply exposed to Mako energy. Their bodies are actually injected with Jenova cells...... For better or for worse, only the strong can enter SOLDIER. It has nothing to do with the Jenova Reunion. But weak people...... like me, get lost in the whole thing. The combination of Jenova cells, Sephiroth's strong will, and my own weaknesses are what created me. Everyone knew that. I'm...... Cloud. ......the master of my own illusionary world. But I can't remain trapped in an illusion any more...... I'm going to live my life without pretending. |
That's what told me that Cloud and Zack were injected with Jenova cells. Zack, because he's a member of SOLDIER and Cloud, likely during his imprisonment by Hojo.
[EDIT] Another update! *adds 4335829th tier to Vilaeth's shrine*
This time it's the "Truth Of FFVII" section, focusing on JENOVA (
pictures here).
| QUOTE |
JENOVA An intelligent life form, who lives somewhere in space. Approx. 2000 years ago, it landed in the Knowslpole (now the Icicle Lodge area), adversely effecting the planet, and grew to be feared as the "Calamity from the Skies" by the Ancients, who still existed in great numbers at the time.
Vicious, highly aggressive, and cunning. Without any thought for creation after destruction, it merely follows its natural instinct to destroy everything around it, invading other life forms by using it's "mimicry" and spreading viruses. Also, thanks to its unusually high vitality, even if it is dismembered the cells will call out to each other, and it is able to reassemble and restore itself to its former state.
A crater was formed by Jenova's impact with the planet, which is still around, known as the "Northern Crater."
> Jenova's Mimicry Jenova has a "Mimicry" ability, which allows it to read people's memories and emotions, and change its appearance, voice, and actions to match. It once uses this to get close to the Ancients, then infect them with a terminal virus.
It's not only Jenova's main body which has this ability. Those with her cells also possess it, albeit incompletely. Before the start of the game, after suffering a mental breakdown, Cloud met Tifa and soon appeared to "return" to normal. This was the result of the mimicry ability of the Jenova cells inside Cloud reading the image of Cloud in Tifa's memories, and Cloud's own ideal image of himself, and forming a new personality. |
So Sephiroth technically wasn't lying when he said "Cloud" was formed from Jenova's powers? The spurts of "Zackness" we see of Cloud throughout the game was not just a result of his own lack of self-confidence, but also Jenova's influence?

Dayum, Tif. You sure get around. :lmao: I thought it was a little bit funny how she seemed so nonchalant about showing up at the well to meet with a boy she'd never had a true conversation with. The "sorry I'm late" line gave me the hint of the impression that somehow, she was used to it. I think that this is a good way of explaining that--when I first saw the promise scene, I believed fully that Cloud and Tifa were close as children, which is why Tifa acted like the night of the promise was a very normal thing. But now we have proofz: Tifa wasn't used to being around Cloud. She was used to being around just about any kid in town by the well. :D
Wasn't there a version of "Tifa's Diary" that was released back in the day? I think it had several entries that even went into the timeline of FFVII.

You might be thinking of Tifa's entries in FFVII Dismantled, a first-person narrative done from several characters' POVs. I know Tifa's POVs were translated on LOVELESS, and some of Cloud and Aerith's POVs have been translated here as well. These little diary entries were written by Benny Matsuyama, the same one who wrote MotP. ;)

| The "sorry I'm late" line gave me the hint of the impression that somehow, she was used to it. |
I'd seen that line (once the whole not-so-close aspect was revealed during the Lifestream sequence) as something of a distant kinda-sorta-with-a-wave-of-the-hand apology. In the same vein as "flippant", but not quite as shallow. Something like a nonchalant apology. I'd imagined that young Tifa was both nervous and curious as to why the town's outcast would call her to the tower, and it was only after a long time thinking, that she decided to meet him.
Although that idea could still apply here, it tells me that it wasn't uncommon for her to be called to the tower. Maybe she really WAS just late.

Also a very good explanation that makes a lot of sense. I sorta got that feeling, too, in that she was SO used to it, she was getting kind of sloppy with her salutations. It's tough to be popular. :D

Update from the Ultimania Omega! :D It's a small bit, but it deals with Aerith, so that's a good enough reason to post it here for me!
| QUOTE |
Check: Sephiroth at the Water Alter After Aerith's tragic demise, Sephiroth's dialogue is interrupted by the fight with Jenova-LIFE. But when the rest of the dialogue is displayed after the battle the speaker's name changes from "Sephiroth" to "Jenova". This shows that the one the party confronts at the water alter is Jenova, mimicking Sephiroth. After her true identity is revealed, the name is corrected as well. |
[source]What are these "Check" sections? Little tidbits to look out for that help make sense of the plot?

This is kinda out of topic from what all of you guys were saying.
(I'm kinda slow) But I never knew Tifa had a large scar on her back from Cloud. Could anyone tell me how she got it? I might have known how, but I could have forgotten :ermm:
