has anyone actually heard her name being called out? Not by our friends or anything, but somewhere else. i never have, but I always thought that Aerith, the "th" would be pronouced as a "s". Not even in the movie did they mention her name! Will we ever hear it?

Yes. Her name was pronounced as "Aerith" in the English version of Kingdom Hearts, although it was "Earisu" in the Japanese version.

Yes, Leon said her name when the Heartless were attacking. I think.

Paksenarrion - November 1, 2005 06:18 AM (GMT)
Aeris is just the English spelling. Because if they kept it as Aerith, then everyone would pronounce her name incorrectly. It's still pronounced as "Aerisu" when spelled Aerith or Aeris.

It's just the English translation.

But they messed it up in KH.

When? At the end? 'cos he only called out to Yuffie at the beginning. there was a speak bubble with "Aerith" though, but I didn't actually hear it.

Kuki Prower - November 1, 2005 08:47 PM (GMT)
He speaking in a bubble.

"Earisu" is the way the Japanese pronouce "Aerith". I assume with the name chance in VII to "Aeris" is that they wanted to keep the "es" sound in her name as that is how they pronouch "th".

Such as "Sank you" :)

this might b off the subject but here it gose:

if the english spelling of Aerith is Aeris, dose the name spelling Aeris have n e thing to do with the greek god Aeris-god of beauti or is it just a coincidence?

Lynn - November 4, 2005 08:39 AM (GMT)
^IMO, the English spelling of "Aerith" should also be "Aerith", because it's been printed as such in all the SE merchandise. "Aeris" is more like how I would spell it if I wanted to show how it should be pronounced.

That said, you might be thinking of Ares, Greek God of War; or Eris, his sister, Greek Goddess of Strife a.k.a. the Spirit of Discord. I've never heard of Aerith's name being linked to a goddess of beauty.

Cetra_Aerith - November 6, 2005 07:03 PM (GMT)
yeah the goddess of beauty is Aphrodite....

I was bothered by the same thing.... Aeris sounds too much like Eris goddess of Chaos....which is kinda ironic no?

Lynn - November 6, 2005 07:16 PM (GMT)
Ironic in the meaning, but quite an interesting coincidence in the word itself. "Aeris" sounds similar to Eris, Greek Goddess of Strife.

And whose name in FFVII also happens to include the word "Strife"?

I somehow doubt the writers looked that up while deciding on the characters' names  but Greek mythology was also included in FFVII... so who knows, eh? If it wasn't on purpose, then CxA really WAS meant to be. :cleris:

The closest translation to Earisu of Aeris and Aerith is Aeris -- the difference is almost negligable, since the 'u' of 'su' is not that enunciated when it comes at the end of a word. Aerith is an alternate spelling, but the pronunciation should really be the same. Both are technically correct and I believe both have appeared on merchandise. The reason Kingdom Hearts uses Aerith as opposed to Aeris is not that it's not her 'official' name, but because they translated it differently, most probably.

I prefer Aeris anyway. <3

I have the japenese version of FFVII... And yeah, in the inst. booklet... they have the english names spelled out next to the names in japanese...

Its spelled Aerith... Like others have said already... If a Japanese person were to pronounce Aerith it would come out, "Aerisu"... Some kind of lisping sound anyways... <_<

Aerith has always been the original spelling... Aeris (Air-ihs) has always been the correct pronunciation... Sorry you "Aireez" people... You were wrong... And I suppose you could pronounce it as Aerith (Air-ith) as well... I renamed her Aerith when I first got her at the beginning of the game... So I'm used to saying both Aeris and Aerith..

Oh and small sidenote... They also spelled Barret's name B-A-R-E-T-T in the japanese inst. booklet...
