Hello again, I come about a question I have been pondering for some days.

In these forums, the remaining Cetra is addressed as Aerith. OK, sounds strange to me because in the American Verison of the game she is addressed as Aeris Gainsborough.

Is it just translation from japanese? :ermm:

Actually, originally, in the american FFVII demo, it had the correct way 'Aerith' but for some reason changed to 'Aeris' for the full game release. It actually is suppose to be Aerith. In the FFVII japanese manuals and official sites had it Aerith (in roman letters) before it came to america, so it was always meant to be Aerith. Square America corrected their mistake with Kingdom Hearts, where her name became Aerith, rather than the FFVII game's Aeris.

Even since i was ickle, when i played it, i have always known it as Aeris, but now, i like either versions.

I prefer Aeris, probably because I'm more used to it. Aerith isn't bad at all though; I particularly like how it's an anagram of 'i earth' (coincidence?)

I pronounce her name (air issssss(ssslike a snakexD it just sounds cool to me) and Aerith (Air eth) and i dont like how Air eth rolls off the tongue so i say aeris

Funny thing, they made the mistake in FF Tactics when they refer to Sephiroth, they replace the th with an S.

I like how Aerith looks to how Aeris looks. So when typing, I always type Aerith. :) As for speaking, I saw Aeris cause that's just how I'm used to saying it.

I'm like this too, except I switch around with Aeris and Aerith while speaking. It doesn't really matter to me which one people use even though I prefer Aerith.

I just don't like it when people start saying "It's Aeris! NOT Aerith!" or visa versa. -_-

I first heard about Aerith in a game magazine called Gamefan. Early articles in that magazine called her Ealis (also, Cloud was Claude and Barret was Bullet :whistle: ). Then they referred her as Aerith. Then when the game was released, it said her name was Aeris so I started calling her that. But nowadays, I like typing her name as Aerith rather than Aeris (it's more fun IMO :P). But even though I start calling her Aerith, I find the name, Aeris, prettier to hear.

aeris does sound better in my opinion, aerith just sounds ugly. aeris is smooth and kind, just like the character

I heard that the TH in Japan is prounounced like S is to us, so her name is pronounced Aeris, but it should be spelt Aerith.

This is what I heard though so correct me if I'm wrong ^_^ I prefer spelling it Aerith but as for saying it, it doesn't matter either way which one I say ^_^

Yeah, the Japanese don't have a "th" sound, so when they say things like Thursday it comes out "Suzday". LOL. It's reallly funny when they try to say "labyrinth", since usually they get their "r"s and "l"s confused when speaking English. :P

Yeah well now I'm stuck saying "Earisu" and pronouncing Cloud in japanese as well >< lol I watched AC in japanese too much :blush: that when the american version comes out I'll be like :huh:

Since, I've only played the Japanese version of FF7, I'd say I'm more used
to the 'Aerith'.
The NA version is okay too since I sometimes use that when my friends don't
know who the hell I'm talking about.

Aerith- EARISU
Tifa- TIIFA(pronounciation is the same)
Barret- BARETTO
Red XII (Nanaki) - REDDO SAATIIN
Yuffie- YUFII(pronounciation is the same)
Vincent- VINSENTO or BINSENTO
Cid- SHIDO
Caith Sith- KETTO SHII
Sephiroth- SEFIROSU
Zack- ZAKKUSU

Thank you for that, Rui! ^_^ I have been studying Japanese lately and was curious why they spelled Cloud's name with katakana rather than just using the kanji for "cloud". I guess because it is a name rather than an object? Or perhaps they consider it a foreign name since they use katakana? :unsure:

This is my idea, but if they use the kanji for 'cloud', people'll be calling him Kumo (means cloud). Though, as Cloud, it'll flow off your tongue when you say 'Cloud and Aerith/Aeris'. :cleris:

I'm not sure why they used foreign(?) names for the characters but I think
just like Pyra-san stated, if Cloud would be in Japanese, it would be "Kumo".
And that is a very unusual name...(never heard of a person with that name).
And Aerith, if you'd stick with the anagram " I EARTH" would be "Daichi", which
means 'earth.'
And I am hella sure that that is not an appropriate name for a girl to use. (Daichi is more used towards guys.)

Besides, this is Final Fantasy! I would surely freak out if the characters started
to have actual Japanese names, when they have been using foreign names
for like the longest times.

Also, like what Pyra-san stated again, KURAUDO and EARISU sounds
easier to say. Like if you were to say Clerith (or Cleris) in Japanese, it'd
be KURAEA. Or maybe that's just me :P

And a bit of off topic but 'Aeris' in Latin also refers to sky, so maybe that's why they named Cloud, Cloud? :lol: :cleris:

I actually used Aeris up until Kingdom Hearts came out and her name was spelled Aerith. I decided to change to using Aerith rather than Aeris as it's the more correct version, plus I think it's prettier. :sweat:
