Title: Red Scorpion, Blue Magic
Description: A Quistis Trepe Fanclub
Hyper-Ballad - September 27, 2005 02:03 PM (GMT)
A club for all those who love FFVIII's finest Instructor! Join, fellow Trepies!
It was actually the two anti-Quistis threads that sprung up in the character-bashing section that really spurred me on to starting this club. I absolutely loved Quistis - she's my favourite female character in the game, next to Selphie, and I never realised until now how misunderstood and underappreciated she is as a character. Quistis is the character in FFVIII who caught my attention straight away, and whom I liked instantly. She's an intelligent, dedicated, ambitious and capable woman but she's very human at the same time - she's a very reserved and internalised character and can be insecure, she can sometimes let things really get to her and impair her, and isn't as cut out for leadership as she'd like to be. But she never struck me as weak in any way, like Tifa (who she's often compared to) sometimes did. On a superficial level, Tifa and Quistis seem very similar and seem to have similar personality problems, but they're both very different characters.
Quistis remains a strong woman, but I loved how imperfect she was. Her emotional struggles - though much less explored - struck a chord in me the way Squall's complexes and his growing feelings for Rinoa never did. She's a very interesting character and it's such a shame that she, as well as many other great secondary characters, weren't given nearly as much attention, development or exploration as Squall and Rinoa. I saw much more depth in Quistis than in either of those two, and it sucks how she wasn't really explored as a character at all after, say, Disc 2. <_<
Plus, she kicked ass so hard in Dollet. How can you not love how she took care of that X-ATM092? So cool!
And she has a beautiful name too. Quistis Trepe - it just has a really great sound to it! ^_^
Quistis (Talking to Seifer): You're the Squad leader. Good luck to you.
Seifer: Instructor, I hate it when people wish me luck. Save those words for a bad student who needs them, eh?
Quistis: Okay then. Good luck, Seifer.

Hee~ Sign me up! ^_^
I really love the points you have and although Quistis had her faults, as most characters have, she really was an interesting character in the end.

Sign me up, even though there are things about Quistis that bother me, I do like her. ^_^ There are plenty of times in FF8 where I'm screaming 'Go Quisty! :yahoo:'
That scene in the beginning with Seifer is a very good example. ^_^ Paragraph stuff later, but I'll leave you guys with this...
Quistis' name is actually supposed to be pronounced "Kee-Stis" Despite that being the official pronounciation, I just pronounce it "Kwis-tis"

I'd love to hear examples! Share your favourite Quistis moments with us!
Some of my favourites are:
* The "Good luck, Seifer" joke.
* Making a mess of the X-ATM092 robot. :shoot:
* When she clings to Squall's arm as you leave Galbadia if you pair off Irvine with Selphie and Rinoa. So funny!
* Telling off Rinoa in Deling City.
* ...and then going back to apologise. That was so sweet. Perhaps not exactly well thought-out (but why Zell and Selphie felt they had to tag along is beyond me, so it's just as much their fault that they got locked-in), but still sweet.
* When she wonders if anyone would ever risk their life for her the way Squall did for Rinoa out in space (aww). It's so sad.
* When she tells off Squall for not going after Rinoa and stopping her from being sealed, and calls him a fool for letting Rinoa go, despite how he feels about her.

I choose to pronounce it Kwis-tis as well! It's how I've always pronounced her name. It just sounds...right to me. Official name pronounciation be damned. :P

I like Quistis very much so please sign me up! People say that she's a very emotionally weak character but I disagree! What about the times she took charge of the situation, eh? She never pined after Squall too, she tried to open his heart but when that didn't work..*shrug* ah well, she just let Squall and Rinoa be. One of my fave Quistis moments is when they all have that orphanage flashback and she admits that she thought her feelings for Squall were romantic love but then realized that it was a misunderstood sisterly love... I'm still not sure if this was so (methinks it was just to save face) but at least she was brave enough to admit it in front of the guy who rejected her so callously too and in front of all her childhood friends.

I would like to cite this moment for every Squinoa fan who grumbles that Quistis was a hurdle in their relationship :ermm:

A lot of Squinoa fans think she was just "copping a feel" when she did this <_< but I found it hilarious.
Looking back, I really understand why she had so many Trepies about. I could never undestand why every friggin' character in the game had to fawn over Rinoa, but I understand why Quistis had a fan club. Not only is she beautiful, she's a kick-ass, take-charge instructor as well...someone that the students could really look up to.

Sign me up! Quistis is probably my favourite character in VIII! I love her! Even though she had her faults and she wasn't developed much, heh Zell, Selphie and Irvine weren't either but she was still brilliant.

Yeah, Rinoa was going a bit too far, after all she did fail miserably even though Quistis warned her. But it does show that Quistis is a nice person.

I've never saw that part, usually because I Quistis and Irvine in the party at that part.

Also because she became an Instructer at such a young age, she's only a year older than most of the students and perhaps younger than other students.

Hiya *^_^*
I'm here
Sign me up please :gift: Quistis is beautiful, and she's also one of the few female characters that I'm not jealous of for being so darn hot because in any case I like her so much :huggle:
I just adore her poses in battle
Kusari Yarou - September 30, 2005 04:30 PM (GMT)
I took a second look at Quistis telling Rinoa off in Deling
Quistis
We don't have time for that. Squall and Irvine are already standing by. We have an operation to carry out, too. You understand, don't you? This isn't a father-daughter quarrel. This isn't a game!
Right on, Quisty! She was just doing what an Instructor should do! She was right wasn’t she, in the first place, the mission wasn’t supposed to be about a girl who was angry at her dad, it was supposed to be about The Plan. She didn’t yell at Rinoa really, she just put her in her place
And she was nice enough to try and apologize. In the end, she was right anyway, Rinoa did cause more harm than good
Let’s discuss Quistis little crush on Squall!
Y’know at first, I actually only thought that Quistis’ attempts to open Squall’s heart were nothing more than a teacher trying to get to know her student, as she had claimed. Very passive player, I was. It was only during the orphanage flashback scene that I realized, wow, so she had a crush on him? No sooner had the realization hit me when Quistis vindicated herself, saying it wasn’t a crush at all but leftover sisterly feelings erased by the GF memory.
I wasn’t sure whether I believed her. I thought “Yeah right, you’re just trying to save face” Up till now, I think she truly had a crush on Squall and once she found out about their shared past, she gratefully used “sisterly feelings” as an excuse.
But I don’t blame her for that. She’s only human…

I wished she'd been developed further too; she was doing so well throughout Disc 1 then she just dropped off the radar (as did everyone else, bar Squall, Rinoa and Laguna in terms of development). It's a pity, because I'm sure the game could've gone a lot further with her character. But she's still the most-developed of the Orphanage Gang after Squall and Seifer, so that's good. ^_^

QUOTE (Kusari Yarou)
People say that she's a very emotionally weak character but I disagree! What about the times she took charge of the situation, eh?
It's one of the reasons I don't like seeing Quistis compared to Tifa (much as I love both characters) because Quistis never shows herself to be "emotionally weak" in the same way Tifa sometimes does. Quistis never needs anyone to support her and tell her what to do - she can be authoritative and can can easily take charge. When she feels insecure and troubled, she doesn't lock it all away, but she tries to reach out to someone and tries to let them know how she feels - it's just unfortunate that the person she tried reaching out to was the wrong person for that sort of thing. She feels normal human emotion like insecurity, indecision, melancholia, but she deals with them. I'd say that not dealing with them is a sign of emotional weakness.
QUOTE (Kusari Yarou)
Right on, Quisty! She was just doing what an Instructor should do! She was right wasn’t she, in the first place, the mission wasn’t supposed to be about a girl who was angry at her dad, it was supposed to be about The Plan.
I hear a lot of people say that this telling-off was motivated by jealousy or bitterness, but I only saw Quistis as being professional in this. There's no way she's going to go along with Rinoa's idea and jeapordise the carefully laid plans already set in motion. You're right - she's behaving with authority, the way an Instructor should. Even if Rinoa was genuinely trying to help, rather than just come up with a better idea than her dad, there was nothing wrong with Quistis being straight with her - it's a matter of life and death, after all.
QUOTE (Kusari Yarou)
She never pined after Squall too, she tried to open his heart but when that didn't work..*shrug* ah well, she just let Squall and Rinoa be.
I think Squall and Rinoa's relationship was getting to Quistis for a while; I think it made her feel a bit bitter, depressed and low about herself ("So you'll dance with a girl you don't even know, but you can't stand being around me?") as well as making her a little impatient with Rinoa sometimes, but these are all human reactions. Quistis isn't perfect, and unrequited love can really hurt. But you're right - even though she feels all those negative emotions, she still never pines after Squall. She admits to herself that she can't compete with Rinoa and tries to accept and move past that the best she can.
QUOTE (Kusari Yarou)
Y’know at first, I actually only thought that Quistis’ attempts to open Squall’s heart were nothing more than a teacher trying to get to know her student, as she had claimed.
I felt the same way - she seemed very much like a teacher trying to reach out to and get to know a particularly troubled student, and try to establish a more informal relationship. She was totally professional as an Instructor, which is why I hate people accusing Quisty of a being an unprofessional teacher trying to make a pass at her student. Quistis only tries to reach out on a more personal level to Squall and make her feelings known, after she loses her Instructor's licence. She's totally professional before that point.

I thought this confession was really brave too, but I do think that Quistis was right in analysing her feelings as a misunderstood sisterly love, and that she wasn't trying to save face. I think she genuinely misunderstood her feeling of connection to him earlier in the game. That's another reason why I don't like people criticising Quistis for "getting in the way" of the S/R relationship - because Quistis admits that her love for Squall isn't romantic. I think the game does make it clear that Quistis was trying to emulate Ellone by being an older, wiser, teacherly, "big sister" figure, that all along she wanted him to think of her as another Ellone, and love her as a sister. All this just got tangled up in her amnesia.

Exactly! It was supposed to be a funny scene! And if Quistis was "copping a feel", then Rinoa and Selphie were doing the exact same thing to Irvine!

I think the Trepies were meant to be a bit of comic relief, but I do understand why Quistis had a fanclub - I mean, she has accomplished a lot in her life, and I think she's a very good example for a SeeD to look up to. I mean, she was an Instructor to her peers! She must've flown through the SeeD ranks earlier on in her life! I think she was far more deserving of praise than Rinoa, who was liked because she's a rich "rebel princess type" and...because she's so darn nice?
