They were talking about Final Fantasy VII Advent children, but I also read something else. Uh.. They asked about the death of Aeris, and that it only happened because.. at first, they only wanted three characters. Cloud, Barret, and Aeris.

First off, Cloud can't die, he's the main character. Barret.. big ol' strong guy. They said that would be 'too obvious' if Barret died (or something like that) so they decided to kill Aeris. Uhm.. Tifa wasn't even in the FFVII storyline, or so this magazine says. She's not important enough! O_O

If you wanna know some more info, I can grab the magazine and type some things up. Just let me know.

I don't know how accurate that is. Any decision like that would have to have been made before the storyline was even written: when it comes down to it, Tifa is a pivotal character. I know that in the beta of the game, the party was Cloud, Barret and Aeris at the #1 reactor, which may be where the idea that the game would only include three characters (which I find hard to believe) came from.

I've also heard some stuff about the game designers being unhappy with Aeris as a female lead and killing her in order to bring in Tifa later on, which I'm not so sure about since Tifa is present from the beginning of the game and, again, is important from the start. Not to mention that Aeris' death is a major plot point.

Yes, it's accurate. Originally there were only three characters, Cloud, Aerith and Barret. The others were written in later. The scan of that interview is here, and there's also a thread on that interview here, so I'll close this thread. ^_^

The article that Madame Batolli linked you to also confirms that this claim is untrue. Nomura was misquoted in the article where that was originally said. Wilhelm found an article in a Japanese magazine a few months ago which explained what really happened. Sakaguchi had wanted one character to die. He left it up to the entire FFVII team which character it should be. They decided on Aerith because they felt that her death would have a greater emotional impact on players than any other character.
