Title: Signature Limits

Kaldea - August 21, 2005 11:47 PM (GMT)
Just an idea to throw at people here.

I admin a lot of forums and this is the only one that doesn't have set signature size limits. It does get annoying (even on high speed) to see that most members' signature areas are 90% of the time larger than the posts they type up. That and I think we need a limit to the amount of graphics in a signature.

I know my opinions are my own, but when I come to a forum, I come to read and reply to certain topics. Not be "assaulted" by the amount and size of signatures people have. People could at least resize the pictures they use instead of having giant pictures that take up most of the thread page.

So I say we make some limits here. While many of you have perfectly fine signature areas, others don't and it really gets to me and many 56k users.

Anastar - August 22, 2005 01:47 AM (GMT)
Actually, we do have a signature limit. It's specified in The Rules:

**SIGNATURE RULES**

- Max 3 standard-sized banners (around 500 pixels X 100 pixels ) -OR- 1 large image/banner (500 pixels x 200 pixels)
- Max 500 text characters (set by the board, no need to worry about that)
- Max 5 lines of text
- No signatures and no avatars that break the rules (pornography, flames, links to illegal stuff, plagiarism, anti-CloudxAerith, anti-Aerith, pro-Cloti, the works).
- No Flash (also set by the board)

We haven't really been enforcing it, though. I agree that some sigs have gotten rather large, though. Perhaps we should start enforcing it?

Kaldea - August 22, 2005 01:48 AM (GMT)
I think we should. <_<

*Ahems at the signatures that stretch the page*

EnglishRose - August 22, 2005 08:54 AM (GMT)
I tried to put more in my sig the other day, but it wouldn't allow me.

Good job, really.

Tacofoolio - August 22, 2005 03:35 PM (GMT)
Pardon me for being a noob, but I'm not sure where my sig qualifies, is it one of three, or one large one? Are we allowed to have more if they're small? I'm sorry if my questions are dumb, I've just never been on forums before this so I still don't understand it all, it took me forever to figure out how to post pictures...

SweetJanie - August 22, 2005 05:35 PM (GMT)
My sig is way too big, isn't it? Two big images and a small one... I't always bigger than my posts!! xD Should I remove one of the big pictures?

Anastar - August 22, 2005 05:55 PM (GMT)
I would say that AR and SJ's sigs are fine. I believe Jenova is more concerned with sigs that stretch out the forum page, or sigs that load slowly on a 56K modem. But I'm not sure, so check with Jenova.

SweetJanie - August 22, 2005 06:16 PM (GMT)
Well, I think I'll take one out... After all the sig space isn't a gallery, right? ^^'

Kaldea - August 22, 2005 07:40 PM (GMT)
Yours are both fine from what I see. I'm just concerned with oversized signatures with like three or four large images.

SweetJanie - August 22, 2005 08:08 PM (GMT)
Yeah, like those Angrod had... o_O When I clicked on the links I almost fainted with the size of them!! I can't even imagine to have them all opened... xo

Punk - August 22, 2005 10:04 PM (GMT)
good idea o.o//

is my sig too big?XDDDDD

SweetJanie - August 22, 2005 10:28 PM (GMT)
Nah, it isn't... you only have one image and some sentences, so don't worry! ^_^

Sefie - August 22, 2005 10:29 PM (GMT)
 Am...I gonna have to rid myself of Kilt-man?

SweetJanie - August 22, 2005 10:39 PM (GMT)
Bet DQ won't mind... I'll miss him, though. :(

Koby - August 23, 2005 05:46 AM (GMT)
I have a cable connection. But I still feel considerate for those 56k users. Try not to make your sig so big that it takes a long time to load or you have to scroll alot. IMO a signature should be no more than 300 pixels high in total with text and all. But thats just me.

Namine_RQ - August 23, 2005 07:24 AM (GMT)
enforce it, will you?

Large signatures can make a page take forever to load especially with a rather slow dial-up connection.

yin-chan - August 23, 2005 11:13 AM (GMT)
Angrod has large sigs? They look reasonable to me, but maybe thats cause I have a broadband connection.
Is my sig too big??? I tried adding more the other day and it wouldn't let me, so good job on that!!

Anastar - August 23, 2005 11:29 AM (GMT)
Your sig is just fine, yin-chan.

The size of the forum page was doubled in width when Angrod's sig pictures were visible. It stretched it out too far.

Sefie - August 23, 2005 07:17 PM (GMT)
Hmm, is mine too large?

Real_Emotion - August 23, 2005 08:10 PM (GMT)
Dang... the things I miss in only two days...
Err... is my sig too big? If it is, I'll just resize/redesign it.

[EDIT]Nevermind, I redesigned it for a more appropriate size. :P

Starlight Night - August 24, 2005 10:41 PM (GMT)
Is mine okay? If not, I might beable to get AR to re-size it.

SweetJanie - August 24, 2005 10:52 PM (GMT)
As long as it's under 500 pixels its okay! That's less than 300, so you're fine! ^_^

Shadow Spirit - August 24, 2005 11:19 PM (GMT)
Well, large signatures can be a pain in many ways, not only byt its size (in pixels), but to load as well, although they're not really connected.

Tags that larger than 500 pixels in width are annoying, yes, especially if they star streching the page. But I feel that it's even more annoying having tags that are very heavy. I mean... it's good that people want good quality in their sigs, but having a tag going over 100 Kb is overkill (saving as a 8-9 quality in Photoshop is good enough).

Unfortunately, there isn't a easy way to find their sizes, but manually (or have a hack in the forums that check the files sizes... but Invision Free doesn't have such).

Either way, before I start going off topic, I would prefer to have the rules enforced :)

Sefie - August 24, 2005 11:37 PM (GMT)
Is my Bubbles one too large? I tried to resize it but it lost the transparenty-ness

Well I haven't measured it or anything...but you do have a rather large sig (or sigs rather). All those piccies take about 20 times more space than whatever you post.

Sefie - August 25, 2005 12:39 AM (GMT)
*Sigh*
Fair thee well Kilt-man

Nevi - August 25, 2005 02:43 AM (GMT)
Is mine okay?

Sephiroth's_girl - August 25, 2005 04:25 AM (GMT)

Andina - August 25, 2005 10:42 AM (GMT)
They look just fine to me.

A good thumb rule is that if your sig is smaller than Aly's, you have nothing worry about. :P

Shadow Spirit - August 26, 2005 12:06 AM (GMT)
Sefie: your tag, although a bit big, it's composed of many images, and it is just 45 kb, pretty good gif compression, so that's ok, I guess... although the admins/smods words are final :P

Nevi: same as Sefie, I guess... O_o

Sephiroth's_girl: just a bit tall, I guess...?

Either way, as long it doesn't take much time to load, neither takes a lot of space, it's fine...

Since everyone else is cutting down on their sigs, I decided to cut down on mine, too.

We should assign Shadow Spirit to Sig Patrol! I agree with all of his recommendations and assessments. Good job, SS and Andina! :D

Kaldea - April 2, 2006 06:40 AM (GMT)
I think we're needing to set stricter rules for this kind of thing. Some people's signature areas are getting rediculous again. No one needs three oversized (sometimes animated) signatures.

Lynn - April 2, 2006 11:08 AM (GMT)
I'm not sure how many people actually read the Forum Rules upon joining, but perhaps it might help to include the signature limit in there as well? Currently it's only mentioned here, and I think far less people would take the trouble to read that all the way through than the first link.

I also think small animated GIFs are okay (e.g. icons of characters), but multiple big GIFs certainly need to be done away with.
