Title: The Hero With A Thousand Faces
Description: ...applying it to FF

Today, a friend of mine told me about Joseph Campbell's The Hero With a Thousand Faces. It is based on the idea that all legends of the world have basically the same elements and in a way, could be seen as the same story: a "Hero's Journey" or "monomyth".
Of course, I immediately linked this blueprint of the "Hero's Journey" to the Final Fantasy games. :D

For example, here's the blueprint of Campbell's "Hero's Journey" that I applied to FF8:

I: Departure

The Call to Adventure
Squall becomes a SEED, gets sent on a mission to Timber that soon turns into something much more

Refusal of the call
Well, we all know how reluctant Squall is...

Supernatural aid
Ellone's powers, sending him and his comrades into Laguna's past

Crossing the first threshold
The unsuccessful Sorceress Assasination

The belly of the whale
They get thrown into a desert prison in the hands of a crazy Seifer

II: Initiation

The road of trials
Struggling to keep the SEED afloat...and later being their commander

The meeting with the goddess
Meeting love interest Rinoa...could apply to Edea since well, she's a sorceress.

Temptation away from the true path
Learning that Matron was their orphanage mother...dilemma over whether to fight her not

Atonement with the Father
The Orphanage Gang's atonement with Edea...this could apply for Laguna as well since he is Squall's real father

Apotheosis (becoming god-like)
Erm...perhaps defeating Omega Weapon to prove that he is the strongest warrior in the world :D

The ultimate boon
FF8's happy ending

III: Return

Refusal of the return
...Not sure about this

The magic flight
...The Ragnarok? :P

Rescue from without
Squall is "rescued" from that desolate island place by Rinoa

Crossing the return threshold
Everybody goes back to their own time

Master of the two worlds
Defeating Ultimecia and the Compressed World she had created

Freedom to live
The whole world is free from the bondage of Ultimecia and Galbadia

Common Mythic Elements

Two Worlds (mundane and special)
The "real" world and the world that has been subjected to time compression

The Mentor
Hmmm...Headmaster Cid?

The Oracle
...

The Prophecy
None, really...unless you count Selphie's train song!

Failed Hero
Seifer fails in his duty as the Sorceress' Knight

Wearing Enemy’s skin
Every time they go incognito

Shapeshifter (the Hero isn’t sure if he can trust this character)
...

Animal Familiar
Moombas and Chocobo

Chasing a lone animal into the enchanted wood (and the animal gets away)
...

I'm sure this is applicable to FFX and FF9 as well(haven't played them yet so I don't know). I was going to do FF7 too but I'm sick of typing all of a sudden
Anyway, here's the original link for reference
