I adore Bugenhagen! :fangirl:

He's not a character in AC, but I hope that Red XIII and the others will at least remember him. He deserves to be mentioned.

Sign me up!

It'd be awesome if the flashed back on the scene he tells them about the lifestream! I bet he would be so cute in AC graphics!

I agree! They could easily do a flashback like having Red XIII remember something Bugenhagen said to him about the Lifestream or something while they're trying to figure out what to do about Geostigma. I remember one of the Japanese magazines saying that Cosmo Canyon might be in the movie, but it was never confirmed.

How did you all feel about Bugenhagen's death?

I was actually moved by his speech. There was something so solid and dependable about his character, so seeing him die was very sad.

Always the fan of eccentric old genius', I'd like to join this club as well. I enjoyed Buggenhagen, and am disappointed that he does not seem to be playing any role in AC.

Hyper - Buggenhagen's death was for me a very sad but very well done moment in the game - a definite close second to that other death scene. In a way it was almost harder to bear because it was like "aww man... everybody's dying in this game!" It was, for me, an even more somber turning point in an already somber game, and sort of instilled an even darker sense of foreboding over the game, as if this game was only destined to have a sad/disatrous ending. But in all it was a very well done scene, and it really did dig at the old heartstrings - especially afterwards when Nanaki hesitates in telling everyone else that Buggenhagen is dead, but instead says that he "went away for awhile" or something like that. I'm not sure if Nanaki was just being a kid in denial, or if he was trying to be brave and not burden everyone else with the sad news (probably a bit of both), but it was, for me, quite heart-wrenching.

I loved Bugenhagen's character, so it was very sad when he died. However, I felt that he was at peace with it. He had lived a rich and fulfilling life, so it wasn't anything like Aerith's death, where her future was stolen from her.

I felt that Bugenhagen understood and accepted death as another phase of life, so to speak. He knew that he would live on in some form as a part of the Planet's energy. To him, I think it was more like moving on to a new adventure, and I think he was at peace with it for that reason. He was ready to move on because he'd done everything in his life that he had wanted to do.

I think Nanaki understood that, too, and I felt that's why he said that Bugenhagen had gone away instead of saying that he died. Nanaki would miss being with and speaking with his grandfather, yet he also understood that Bugenhagen would live on in some form. Even though he was physically gone, Bugenhagen moved on to become part of the Planet that he loved.

You said exactly how I feel Aly! ^_^

I completely agree Aly, particularly with your observation about Bugenhagen's attitude towards his own mortality. I was thinking in terms of my reaction to the scene instead of the scene itself. I think Nanaki knew Bugen's attitude towards death and accepted it, but at the same time (since he was, after all, technically just a kid) he wasn't quite sure how to really handle it - not that anyone ever really is prepared for such things, though...

Oh, I agree that it was sad when he died, especially if you loved his character... yet, I didn't find it as heartbreaking as Aerith's death because I knew that Bugenhagen was at peace with it and because he had already lived a rich and fulfilling life. Aerith's future was stolen from her, but not Bugenhagen's - which made it far less tragic for me.

Bugenhagen puzzles:
1. Why does Bugen have no feet, and why does he float?
2. Why is Bugen related to a four legged creature? :ermm:
3. Would Bugen make it to the Promised Land after death?
4. Why was Bugen able to understand the voices of the Ancients in the Forgotten City?

Toxo - July 20, 2005 04:02 PM (GMT)
1. 'Cause he wants to have secrets too.
2. He adopted Red's mother.
3. If he lies his true species.
4. 'Cause he's smart!!

I certainly agree... Bugenhagen's passing was nowhere near Aerith's death. For me it was as much an ambience thing as anything else - for me, his death seemed to suggest a sense of forboding regarding the outcome of saving the planet. That was the central theme of what I was trying to say.

I know what you mean. It was almost as if Bugen knew that the Planet would die. His words at the Forgotten City also suggested that Humanity may very well be wiped out by Holy. Yet, he was oddly at peace with that.

In most Eastern religions, life is seen as an energy that is only temporary and fleeting. The soul is eternal, and it takes the shape of different lifeforms on Earth through rebirth. The soul experiences life on Earth through different lifeforms while trying to reach a higher consciousness. Once the soul achieves higher consciousness, it becomes One with the consciousness of God - that's how they see "Heaven". (This is a very simplistic explanation and not entirely accurate - it's more complicated than that.)

The point is, I see the idea of the Lifestream and Bugen's perception of life and death as being very similar to the ideas of Eastern religions. The soul lives eternally in the Lifestream. The soul joins the Lifestream again when a person dies, and is reborn. The higher consciousness of "Heaven" is similar to the Promised Land.

I'm babbling... but I think that's why Bugen was so at peace with his own death as well as the idea that Humanity might die from Holy. Life will continue in some form, as long as the Planet doesn't die.
