Title: The English Dub Club
Description: DEATH TO SUBTITLES!!!!!
FF_Goddess - June 6, 2005 01:45 AM (GMT)
This is a club for those talented, and often under-appreciated, voice actors that dub Japanese Anime. :D
I was introduced to dubbed Anime first, so maybe that is why I like it better than subtitled Anime. Frankly, I just do not care for the Japanese voice acting. They have no range in their voices. It all sounds so flat, high-pitched, and just downright annoying. The women sound like 6-year-olds, and the men don't sound a whole lot older.
Plus, I would much rather hear the voices than read the subtitles any day. I don't like having to take my eyes off what is going on to read what is being said. It's so distracting, I feel like it takes away from whatever it is I am watching.

Seii Monogatari - June 6, 2005 01:49 AM (GMT)
Crispin Freeman also voiced Rosiel in Angel Sanctuary. ;)
Kaldea - June 6, 2005 03:48 AM (GMT)
Steve Blum RULES ALL. Spike had an impact on me rivaling Cloud even.
And the voices in VHD:B ruled too!
Andina - June 6, 2005 10:14 AM (GMT)
Wah, Dwight Schultz is my favourite! The voice Maechen had in FFX was simply too hypnotizing. ^_^
Real_Emotion - June 6, 2005 11:01 AM (GMT)
I wanna join!
I don't mind American voice acting at all, and anyways David Kaye is my third god.
Sefie - June 6, 2005 03:39 PM (GMT)
Sign me up! I think dubbing needs more support!
I don't get why folks so often want it subtitled, they just like to sit and listen to Japanese? I'd prefer to be able to look at the purdy pictures rather than try to keep up with the mile a minute subtitles

Exactly.
And a lot of anime hardcore fans refuse watching with dubs just because it isn't Japanese enough. It's stupid.
Sefie - June 6, 2005 03:56 PM (GMT)
*Nods*
although, I will admit that there are times when the English dubbing sucks monkey bones(Weiz Kruz anyone?). That's why I really like the DVD's, I can CHOOSE which I want!
Lady Anime - June 7, 2005 03:51 AM (GMT)
You know to be honest, I find some dub reactions stupid. Here's what you'll expect from a Tokyo Mew Mew/Mew Mew Power fourm
"The Manga is Better then the Anime!"
"The dub is horrible!"
"4Kids should never dub anime again!"
That's only the tip of the iceberg.
I cannot understand why people make a huge deal over some dubbing jobs.
They should chill out , the shows are just animated drawings!
Now I'll admit that I did make a big deal out of the Yu-Gi-Oh dub and all the big changes about a year ago. But I got over it! Now just for the record I've never seen the original version of most of the shows I've seen but I've heard about the changes and I watch the dubs anyway.
You know why? Because it's the only way. Unlike some people, I can't watch or download any Japanese episodes from a website, or get import DVDs, or however else these people are watching the original versions of these shows. The dub is the only way I can watch Zatch Bell, Mew Mew Power, and many other shows. I've yet to see any Zatch Bell manga being sold and IMO the Tokyo Mew Mew manga was rushed, the anime felt better paced.
Okay sometimes the dubbers do screw up voices. But there's nothing we can freaking do and that's that. Besides I would rather suffer crappy voice acting then read poorly translated or poor quality subtitles.
Yes sometimes the dubbers make dumb changes like getting rid of kanji or replacing Japanese names with American names. But again nothing we do about it. So we should just shut up and deal with what we have.
Dub bashers can make 100 online petitions, write 1000 nasty letters to the dubbers, and 1,000,000 mean posts on message boards.
There's nothing they can do about it!
-------------------------------------------
Err sorry. I just don't like dub bashing. It kind of ruins a show for me. Sign me up!
(By the way, I didn't mean to offend anyone, if I did. I'm sorry.)

| Johnny Yong Bosch: Voice of Vash the Stampede (Trigun); Kiba (Wolf's Rain) |
Trivia: Johnny Young Bosch is the guy who played Adam the Black Ranger in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. I used to watched it a lot as a kid and was surprised to see a familiar name in the Wolf's Rain dub. :D
Aerith's_Man - June 7, 2005 05:24 AM (GMT)
I don't want to join...just yet...but here is my ideas on some voice actors.
Kean reeves (the guy who plays neo on the matrix...can't remember how to spell his name.)- Cloud
Hallie barry-Tifa
Mandy moore- Aeris
(the asian chick on charlies angels...can't remember her name)-Yuffie
yeah that is all I got so far...I will add more later when I think of some good actors.
Kaldea - June 7, 2005 10:42 AM (GMT)
I don't want ANY known actors to use voices for FFVII characters. it would COMPLETELY ruin it for me. Mandy Moore was a fricken joke as Aeris. <_<
Sefie - June 7, 2005 03:33 PM (GMT)
I LIKED Mandy as Aeris. Her voice was soft and sweet and I thought it suited Aeris perfectly.
But yeah, I don't want any US Celebs to do the voices. I'm too much of a nerd to want them in our secret circle
Kaldea - June 7, 2005 03:52 PM (GMT)
She made Aeris sound younger than Yuffie. And like a complete ditz. It just really screwed up my version of Aeris. <_<
And the only celebrity I'd accept as someone in the FFVII cast would be Sean Connery for Nanaki's voice.
Tacofoolio - June 7, 2005 04:59 PM (GMT)
Mandy Moore did the voice of Aeris? When? :puke: The idea of her being Aeris makes me gag. I don't care for her at all, I saw her in concert once with a lot of other artists and she really disappointed all of the fans. It made up for it getting to see Savage Garden though! Man, that makes me realize how old I'm getting. But yeah, back on topic, I hate her as an actress most of all though <_< . She just doesn't have the talent.
I actually like dubbing because it takes away from things and it's harder to get into the story. I like subtitles but I don't like depending on them only.
Kaldea - June 7, 2005 08:38 PM (GMT)
Mandy Moore was Aeris's voice in the North American version of Kingdom Hearts. <_<
I was satisfied with Steve Burton's voice for Cloud. Not exactly what I was expecting but at least they didn't turn him into a little whiny boy.
lenne - June 7, 2005 08:39 PM (GMT)
hmm......yeah I would have to say the same voices that played
Yuffie
Aeris
Cloud
The same in FF7:AC
Tacofoolio - June 8, 2005 06:59 PM (GMT)
No wonder I didn't like it! I gotta agree she made Aeris sound too little girl-like.
Sefie - June 8, 2005 07:10 PM (GMT)
Real_Emotion - June 8, 2005 07:29 PM (GMT)
I didn't think Mandy Moore did a bad job as Aeris. I actually enjoyed her portrayl of Aeris. Note, I did play KH before FFVII, so I always imagened her voice as I read Aeris's dialog. The same with Cloud as I imagened Steve Burton's voice during Cloud's dialog. Now, do I think Mandy should voice as Aeris again in AC. Hmmm... not really..., but I haven't really made up my mind in this issue. I'll get back to you on this later.
If they do use the VA from KH for AC, dear merciful lord, please not Lance Bass as Sephy or Christy *something* Ramano as Yuffie. Lance didn't sound as evil, dark, and menacing as I expected him to portray Sephy as. And, Yuffie just didn't sound right to me... <_<
Kaldea - June 8, 2005 08:20 PM (GMT)
*KILLS MANDY MOORE FOR THE SAKE OF THE WORLD*
Just...ugh... Seriously... Aeris is not a 10 year old ditz. She should not sound like one.
God, I need sleep. x.X

Kaldea - June 9, 2005 05:58 PM (GMT)
I remember Savage Garden. I also remember Poison and all the 80's hair bands.
Andina - June 9, 2005 06:11 PM (GMT)
You're all young little kiddies, darn it! Dont you dare to call yourselves old. ^_^
What goes for Mandy Moore, her voice was never a problem to me in KH. I hardly know anything about her so perhaps that helps.
Kusari Yarou - June 10, 2005 03:29 AM (GMT)
I don't think it really matters or not whether the dub is American or Japanese or whatever as long as it's accurate. Sometimes I don't like American dubs because they leave out vital information. Sometimes they even butcher the anime, just like what happened to Hayao Miyazaki's classic Nausicaa. But as long as it's a fairly accurate dub, then it's fine with me.
I like a lot of seiyuu in Japanese, American and even Filipino dubs. In the end, it's all about the voice suiting the character.
UsagiMamoru - June 10, 2005 07:25 PM (GMT)
Personally, I prefer the Japanese version of most anime. I'm not going to join this club, but I will make my comments. My favorite versions of most anime are the Japanese versions like Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon. While the subtitled versions are my favorite and I love the Japanese voice actors, I must pay tribute to a wonderful voice actor,
*Toby Proctor. The Japanese version of BSSM is my favorite, but the English version had a wonderful voice actor, Toby Proctor. In the English version of Sailor Moon, there were three voice actors for Tuxedo Mask/Darien. In the Japanese version, there was one voice actor for Tuxedo Kamen/Mamoru. I love both the English and Japanese voices. Furuya Tohru was great as Mamoru. Out of all three of the Darien vocies, Toby Proctor plays Darien the best. He is the second voice actor of Darien. Darien/Mamoru has three different voice actors in the English version. Since there are three voice actors, Toby is the second one. One of the episodes he voiced Darien in is "A Crystal Clear Destiny", the Japanese version of the episode is "Shining Light! Moon Princess Revealed!"
I have watched all 200 episodes of Sailor Moon in Japanese as well as all of the English version, I've read all 18 manga volumes, watched all the live action episodes and the 3 movies. As you know, Usagi/Mamoru and Serena/Darien are my favorite couple.
Toby Proctor is a wonderful voice actor. While Japanese voice actors are my favorite and the Japanese versions subtitled of the anime are my favorite, I must pay tribute to
Toby Proctor, the second voice actor for Darien/Mamoru Tuxedo Mask/Tuxedo Kamen. He was wonderful and just as great as the Japanese voice actor.
I'm also a Mandy Moore fan. She did a great job. Mandy Moore is one of my favorite singers ever.
In conclusion, while the Japanese versions are always my favorite, there are still great English versions. The fansubbed versions are my favorite. Toby Proctor is one of my favorite voice actors. The Japanese version is still my favorite, though.
When I watch anime, I usually watch the Japanese version. I order the Japanese episodes fansubbed on VHS and on the DVD versions I always choose Japanese.
Back in 1995 I'd watch Sailor Moon on T.V. every morning at 6:00. Now I watch the Japanese versions fansubbed.
The Japanese versions of anime are my favorite, btu I still like the ENglish version. Is there anyone else here who loves both versions? Because I love both. I may prefer the Japanese version, but I still love the English one as well.
Tacofoolio - June 10, 2005 08:35 PM (GMT)
What's fansubbed? I'm not that knowledgeable about these things.
Sefie - June 11, 2005 05:43 PM (GMT)
Fansubbed is when a fan, not a professional company, subtitles it. These are always free and downloadable
I prefer subtitled Sailor Moon too, but that's because it was one of those animes that was SLAUGHTERED in the translation.
Most of the current animes are translated well, and are no longer Americanized

Agreed. I do
NOT want a bunch of celebs voicing the characters in
AC. <_< Now, some seasoned Anime voice actors such as I have listed in the first post would be fine. But
NO pop stars. *Holds up a "Just Say No To Lance Bass" sign*
The only celebs I could tolerate would be Michael Clark Duncan for Barret and maybe Denis Leary for Cid. :lmao:

Sefie - I am 23. I was unaware how young everyone was in this thread when I first signed up - I assumed (wrongly, haha) that most people younger than me wouldn't have played FF7. But, it would seem that I am one of the older people on this forum. Oh well - it's fun, everyone's friendly, and being goofy here allowed me to maintain my sanity during my first year of graduate school... :D
Sorry this is off-topic... I wanted to answer Sefie's question, but I don't have much else to add to this thread.

It's amusing to think how much time has passed since I first had the chance to play Final Fantasy VII and how young I was back then. Oh these memories, so sweet and yet so depressing at the same time. ^_^
